You put it well, Meta. I couldn’t quite verbalize how she made me feel, other than whenever I started to relax into Prince Harry’s answer her voice would jar. I gave up part way through because I was feeling like she was interrupting too much, was, in a sense, not responding to the Price so much as reeling off a list of prepared questions. Maybe another day when I’m less tired I’ll give listening another try, as I’d really like to hear more of harry’s viewpoints.
For me, I think at times she was trying to dig too deep. I felt uncomfortable when she asked that woman to recite her life of crime. It was just the way she said it. And the questions put to Prince Harry were in some ways condescending and not always entirely respectful. I don’t know much about her so I don’t have an axe to grind. It’s just the way she phrased things and the tone she brought. I understand what she was trying to do but I just felt she was too inappropriately personal at times.
I only heard her with the prince, and as I implied I wasn’t able to stick with it for long because several of her questions really jarred for me. Like you, I don’t know her from Adam (weird old expression), but she really didn’t click for me. Maybe she was ‘nervous’ – which would be understandable – but for whatever reason her style of questioning turned me off, and it seemed like whenever I was about to sink into Harry”s answer she would intrude. It really felt like an intrusion to me, so I ‘walked out’. Mellody had her own financial firm and was often a money correspondent on GMA. She married George Lucas several years ago and they have a little girl via surrogate. She has rubbed me the wrong way because she seemed to be something of a glory-hound, wanting attention. She seems to put on airs. I noticed this at the Kennedy center Honors when Lucas was being inducted and in some of their joint appearances over the years. George Lucas left Hollywood to raise his 2 kids (adopted) away from that environment. He did not do the party scene, etc. When he and Mellody Hobson first got together, you saw him out more and she was always wearing something that she was falling out of. I did not watch the segment, but I know what meta means about something about her seeming “off.”
Hmmmm. All I’ll add is that IMO Mellody doesn’t seem to have learned from Flotus Michelle’s 8+ years in the spotlight. OTH, from your little history she may just be ‘being herself’.
That was a great panel. Listening to the Prince, he is so down to earth, self assured, and has empathy. No wonder he Obamas and the royals are such good friends. Their life view is alike.
