Gave out most of my candy. Have too much left over.

Watching Dodgers game. This is such a great series. Went to so many games when I was in college in the late 60s. Still love those Dodges, just don’t follow as close as I use too.

Can’t wait to listen to the speakers tomorrow at the Obama Summit. So needing the positive note of this summit.

Thank you Nerdy for all you do for us. And thank you to all who participate here. We are the TOD family. And we are the Hope we have been waiting for..

Good evening TOD! Hope that everyone had a happy Halloween. Nerdy Wonka, thank you so much for providing all the news on the inaugural Obama Foundation Summit. Really looking forward to Michelle’s time on the stage tomorrow. Saw some of these speakers from today but others I still need to watch.

AMK, on your bail question. With white collar crime cases bail is granted in 90-plus percent of all cases. Flight risk is only one of many factors that the court must consider. The only cases where you usually see bail denied is with murder. The court has imposed two additional conditions on these defendants to try to ensure they do not leave the US. The first is that they must check in every day which is highly unusual with these types of charges. Second, and more importantly, they are under house arrest which is highly unusual for a white collar defendant. I really do not believe that they are going anywhere. In fact, I suspect that a marshal is stationed outside of their homes 🙂 The passport thing with Manafort is really quite stunning.

Thanks FF. But this must fall within that ‘rarest of rare’ cases, surely? The treason charges and the evidences are serious enough to warrant a slammer straight away. This is all about driving a narrative. Let’s start with the 3 passports, one of them under a false name. Really? How much white entitlement can you get?

Also. Too. Time to white collar crimes punishments.

There is no doubt, AMK, that the system is skewed in favour of rich defendants. Always has been, always will be. I suspect given the passport issue Manafort May well be wearing a digital monitoring ankle bracelet 🙂 That will likely keep him from boarding any plane. The feds are pretty good at keeping tabs on someone when they are after them. They are not about to allow him to get out of the country. But the fact remains that a poor young a defendant with no assets would sit in jail for months because he or she is unable to post $1,000 bail while Manarort gets house arrest despite the severity of his crimes. It sucks.

What about those 3 passports- is that legal? And wouldn’t the White House, when they did their “vetting” of Manafort have been aware of these 3 passports? What legal / above board reason would someone have for needing 3 passports? Asking seriously as I really don’t know.

Lots of discussion on the intertubes sherijr – apparently two is definitely legal – if you travel a lot & your passport gets full you can get a 2nd while the first is still valid – also relates to travelling to different countries which do not allow travellers to other countries (e.g. Israel & other middle eastern countries). Getting 3, unless official/service passports sounds like a stretch.

Where Moderate Republicans Are Wildly Popular
by Martin Longman October 31, 2017

Morning Consult has updated their popularity ratings for the nation’s fifty governors. Some of the results aren’t too surprising. The least popular governor in the country is Chris Christie of New Jersey. He’s followed by Connecticut governor, Dan Malloy. Also trailing the pack are Republican governors Mary Fallin of Oklahoma, Sam Brownback of Kansas, and Bruce Rauner of Illinois.

What’s less predictable is the profile of the most popular governors.

The two most best-rated are Larry Hogan of Maryland and Charlie Baker of Massachusetts. Not far behind them are Phil Scott and Chris Sununu of Vermont and New Hampshire, respectively.

What they all have in common is that they are Republicans serving their first term in states Hillary Clinton won. In fact, Vermont, Maryland, and Massachusetts were some of her strongest states.

Republicans miss their own deadline on tax plan unveiling
    11/01/17 08:41 AM—UPDATED 11/01/17 08:45 AM
    By Steve Benen

Today was supposed to be the day. After months of behind-the-scenes negotiations and behind-closed-doors legislating, House Republicans recently boasted that their tax plan would be unveiled on Wednesday, November 1.
    ………………………….

House Republicans will delay releasing their tax bill until Thursday, it was announced Tuesday night.

The bill had originally been scheduled to be unveiled Wednesday. But speculation over a delay was rampant on Capitol Hill on Tuesday night, with representatives of House leaders pointing to the Ways and Means Committee for any final decision or announcement…. Republican members privately aired their frustration with a process that they feel cut out of, and some issues were still unresolved hours before the bill had been slated for release.

Just in from CNN. The bird called Papalopoulos is singing.

Candidate Donald Trump did not dismiss the idea of arranging a meeting with Russia’s president when it was suggested in a meeting with his campaign foreign policy advisers last year, according to a person in the room.

The idea was raised by George Papadopoulos as he introduced himself at a March 2016 meeting of the Republican candidate’s foreign policy advisers, according to a court filing.

“He didn’t say yes and he didn’t say no,” the official said, declining to be more specific about Trump’s response to Papadopoulos.
But the chairman of Trump’s national security team, then Alabama senator and now attorney general Jeff Sessions, shut down the idea of a Putin meeting at the March 31, 2016, gathering, according to the source. His reaction was confirmed with another source who had discussed Session’s role.

Trump’s response to Papadopoulos’ offer could be of interest to special counsel’s office.

    from the article:

It explains why Trump is in constant fights with Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan. Simply put, the idea that there are people in an organization with as much power as a CEO and that he can’t threaten, or fire is an anathema to Trump. He must treat these two weirdos in Men’s Warehouse suits as his equals? Also, why would the CEO need to get involve getting two division heads to finish a project? Trump, a man who has never worked for anyone other than his family interests or himself, doesn’t understand working with people as opposed to barking orders at them.
