Thank you for bringing this article to my attention, Mr. India. It’s a *nice* read.

      // ……………………..

After a national trauma that shook the foundations of American democracy, it wasn’t difficult to imagine that the majority who voted against Trump would lose whatever faith we had left in our political system, as well as our ability to change it.

I understand the temptation. I share it more often than I like to admit because, like you, I read the news. And the news is a terrible place–a flood of tweets and headlines that submerge us in a perpetual state of chaos without ever showing us the way out.
      ………………………..

This cynicism can be contagious. The more you hear that all politics is bullshit, the more likely you are to believe it. And if you believe it, you may decide that the system is rigged beyond repair–that no matter how much time or energy you put into electing a candidate or fighting for a particular policy, you’ll be let down. The promising outsider starts to look like an establishment sell-out. The final bill has been watered down by too much compromise or too many lobbyists. Political opponents don’t just seem to be wrong, they seem to be acting in bad faith, so maybe you decide it’s not worth trying to persuade that Trump voter or Bernie voter or Hillary voter. Maybe it’s easier to yell at them or mock them or dismiss them altogether.

I get it. I get all the reasons to walk away from this mess. I get all the reasons to limit your participation to television shouting and Twitter burns (I’ve been known to partake). ……………..

And yet cynicism is ultimately incompatible with democracy. “The basis of democracy,” the writer Marilynne Robinson said, “is the willingness to assume well about other people.” Sure, our fellow citizens will upset and enrage us. No one’s motives are always pure. Some, like our President’s, are almost never pure. But America was founded on the belief that human beings, despite all of our deep flaws and differences, could still find a way to govern ourselves; that there is a workable alternative to being ruled or being at war with one another.

        Jon’s conclusion =

“The story we’ve begun to write is the story of an American awakening – the story of a national trauma that is causing us to slowly shake off our cynicism and recognize that democracy is showing up, not just on Election Day but on all the days in between. Will the story end well? Will we finally change? I have no idea. Predicting our future is a fool’s game. Trying to change it is not. Democracy is hard, slow, and a constant struggle. That was true before the Trump presidency, and it will remain true long after he’s gone. And even though there will always be setbacks and heartaches and loss, the progress we’ve made and the lives we’ve changed remind us that there is joy in the struggle, and hope in the difficult journey ahead.”

TRUMP’S EXORBITANT TRAVEL COSTS COULD PAY TO SEND PUERTO RICO 128 CARGO SHIPS WITH AID
The president and first family have reportedly spent an unprecedented $32 million on trips to Mar-a-Lago and other exclusive Trump properties across the country — so much, in fact, that the online document company FormSwift decided to convert the extravagent budget into its equivalent in humanitarian aide.

Estimating the cost of fuel and the length of the trip, the numbers-crunchers discovered that the president’s estimated travel bills would equal 128 cargo ship trips from Florida to Puerto Rico. When FormSwift included the entire first family’s travels, the amount of aid ships increased to 130.

The company says it was motivated to examine the travel expenditures because of how Trump responded to the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

“Trump’s statement on the ‘very large ocean’ between the US and Puerto Rico made us interested in seeing just how difficult it is to get cargo ships of supplies to these victims,” FormSwift CEO Vik Tantry told Newsweek.

A trip on a fully loaded U.S. cargo ship from Florida’s ports to Puerto Rico’s would cost an estimated $249,899 in fuel to make the 1,149-mile trip, according to the study.

Corker: Tillerson, Mattis and Kelly ‘help separate our country from chaos’
By CRISTIANO LIMA 10/04/2017 05:08 PM EDT

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker offered a blunt assessment of the Trump administration on Wednesday, saying his top advisers “help separate the country from chaos.”

Corker, addressing an NBC News report that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson considered resigning in frustration over his role, painted the former ExxonMobil executive — along with Chief of Staff John Kelly and Secretary of Defense James Mattis — as having a calming influence in the administration.

“I think Secretary Tillerson, Secretary Mattis and Chief of Staff Kelly are those people that help separate our country from chaos,” Corker told reporters at the Capitol on Wednesday afternoon.

Stop Giving Bernie Sanders a Pass on Gun Control
    ………………………………………………………………………

That is why historical perspective is important. The truth about Bernie’s history is that the one thing that the NRA was pivotal to the launch of Bernie’s Congressional career. The truth about Bernie’s history is that for the longest time Bernie Sanders has opposed mandatory waiting periods, background checks if they happen to inconvenience a potential mass shooter, and supported the NRA’s pet project of special corporate immunity for gun manufacturers and dealers. The truth of Bernie Sanders is that he voted against the Brady bill five times, and had no serious interest in progressive gun legislation until he became a serious candidate for president.

Of course, the Feinstein bill is limited in its scope and narrow in its target. It does not enact broad gun control policies, choosing instead to merely outlaw equipment that turns a legal weapon into an illegal one. It is designed to attract the Republican support it will need to be passed. One might even say it’s one of those dreaded political things: pragmatic.

So ask yourself, why is Bernie Sanders, who screamed at the top of his lungs during the 2016 campaign that pragmatic, incremental progress was too insignificant, who berated his Democratic primary opponent for not being bold enough to propose things that had no chance of passing, be suddenly interested in the most incremental piece of gun legislation?

The answer would seem to be obvious. This bill is a chance to support something that looks like gun legislation but doesn’t really affect the bottomlines of the gun lobby, while at the same time providing the convenience of limelight. This is a golden opportunity for Bernie to showcase his faux-gun control credentials while not having to worry about offending his white, rural, gun-loving NRA constituents in Vermont.

And who lives in rural areas? Gun clinging white guys. The End. (From the WP opinion above)

But something else is at work here. As we argue in our book, “One Nation After Trump,” the United States is now a non-majoritarian democracy. If that sounds like a contradiction in terms, that’s because it is. Claims that our republic is democratic are undermined by a system that vastly overrepresents the interests of rural areas and small states. This leaves the large share of Americans in metropolitan areas with limited influence over national policy. Nowhere is the imbalance more dramatic or destructive than on the issue of gun control.

    • October 5, 2017 at 10:57 am

Meanwhile the Republican wrecking ball will also “severely harm rural communities”:
Chomsky saying “There, out of the spotlight, the most savage fringe of the Republican Party is carefully advancing policies designed to enrich their true constituency of private power and wealth, ‘the masters of mankind’
These policies will harm the irrelevant general population and devastate future generations..” (Under cover of Trump’s antics and faux claims.)

    hmmmmmmmm

Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock booked rooms in a Chicago hotel facing the Lollapalooza music festival in August, a law enforcement official told USA TODAY on Thursday.
Paddock, 64, booked one room at the Blackstone Hotel starting Aug. 1, two days before the festival opened. He booked a second room Aug. 3.
Both rooms had a checkout date of Aug. 6, corresponding with the final day of the music festival that drew tens of thousands of concertgoers to Grant Park alongside Lake Michigan. It was unclear if Paddock ever used the room or was in Chicago during the festival, according to the law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

Sarah Sanders (whenever I’ve seen a clip of her) is so condescendingly ignorant. Not to mention unbelievably arrogant! IMO she epitomizes those persons puffed up into a position of power they little realize they cannot manage, and so they try to balance their inadequacy by lording it over those they can. To my mind she’s one of those women in ‘power’ whose performance from the podium makes me cringe.

      • October 5, 2017 at 8:42 pm

” …whose performance from the podium makes me cringe.”

Me too, vc. She acts as if the questions asked by the press are idiotic and don’t deserve to be acknowledged as serious must less be answered. And of course to her, 45 is a rock star. These f**kers are full of hate to the core and nothing will change that. No one, from the deplorable one- in- chief, to McTurtle and Lying Ryan, to the rank and file die-hard GOP are going to have an awakening. To change, they would have to admit that the ideas that give their lives shape and meaning were false and even self-defeating and they will never accept any truth that proves this. What we need is for the majority of us to GOTV, stay informed and active, so that the majority of the country is going in the right direction of true justice and equality.
