Will update in a few minutes — saw (somewhere) that shooter was a high-stakes gambler, got free rooms (he had two for his evil deed), and brought rifles up in 10 suitcases.
Check here later tonight or tomorrow, I’ll reply after LVPD press conference is over (7 pm PDT).
I’d take this person’s “report” with a grain of salt — he works for Sheldon Adelson’s Las Vegas Review Journal — but if he was well known to staff, in all likelihood his arriving with various suitcases wouldn’t have raised suspicion.
Sources: Last night's shooter, Stephen Paddock, was a well-known VIP gambler at Mandalay Bay. Played high-limit video poker, $125 per hand.
Can’t find the tweet that said he had two rooms (hence two windows smashed), but here’s what a Las Vegas Review Journal columnist tweeted last night as events were unfolding:
As police and everyone else calls for calm, the guy Sheldon Adelson hired as his lead columnist shrieks "Muslim terror." No level too low. https://t.co/xxjid6t0tR
From the article:
“The heavily armed Paddock started his rampage at about 10:08 p.m., spewing fusillade after fusillade — enough rounds to kill 59 and injure more than 500 attending the Route 91 Harvest country music festival.
According to police radio transmissions, a group of officers was at the gunman’s door, and had locked down the 32nd floor, by about 10:25 p.m. but waited until about 11:21 p.m. — more than an hour after the attack began— before they blew open the door to enter, the recording shows.”

Development mainly spends its time inspecting our underwear and censoring art, breathing down our data, lecturing us about lifestyles and morals, reducing education and media to propaganda, destroying the economy, glorifying anti-intellectualism, propping up shabby right-wing icons to erase established national figures, sacralising tradition and military to replace debate with nervous compliance, throwing individual rights under a homogeneous social bus, and forcing all this with legislation — or force, if need be.
Some promises were insincere ploys; others, like jobs and economic growth, are unravelling scarily.
Corruption has disappeared only from the front pages of newspapers. Hatred and fake news run high. Disillusioned voters are now waking up to the toxicity of the BJP vision.

I’m logging off soon, but here’s a couple of photos from today (not sure if they’ve been posted here or not…):
Tonight, from midnight, I will turn my lights off to pay tribute to the victims of the Marseille and Las Vegas attacks. #EiffelTowerpic.twitter.com/hf42A2Nu76
My youngest daughter is 35 with two children. I am up here in Seattle with her for a couple months helping. She graduated from UNLV and stayed a couple years afterwards working at the Venetian as a gondolier then at Enterprise. She knows many people in LV and is still in touch with them. She was in contact with many friends today making sure they were okay. She read me accounts they wrote about running, hiding behind cars, seeing someone on the ground that had been shot and bleeding, hiding in a hotel room with another couple that let them in, losing others in their group but being afraid if they called and they were hiding it could tip the shooter off to where they were. All the accounts showed genuine fear and helped me understand the experience and showed that even when they were not injured the experience could leave a real scarring effect for a long time.
Was surprised that Politico featured this series, especially since the Obamas are out of office and because they were not all that supportive of them when they were.
Just as we’ve become inured to FUBAR and his entire SWAMP cabinet (because of the firehose corruption, lying and greed), since GOP elected officials are beholden to NRA/Kochs/Mercers these awful, unAmericans continue to get away with cloaking the lethality of current policy.
Simply unbelievable.
Repeating myself (and The Guardian) for emphasis:
On average, a mass shooting (4 or more people shot in one incident) occurs every 9 out of 10 days in the US.
There was a “mass” shooting 1 block from my house 2 weeks ago, 4 people shot- luckily all survived but it was horrible. The attempted murderer still at large. I can bet that it was not reported as a mass shooting, because even on our police facebook page they list it merely as a shooting.
Are you in Baltimore? The Guardian graphic lists Sep 24, 4 people injured in Baltimore on that date. (Yellow people icons were injured, red are deaths from mass shootings in their graphic. And because so many people were killed/wounded yesterday 😦 , it takes a bit of scrolling down to see other shootings in their graphic — highly informative, IMHO.)
The Guardian is good at following up on US atrocities, hopefully they’ll dig deeper and report on “unsolved” (or killers/attempted murderers got away scot-free).
wow thanks for that, Arapaho- yep that is indeed the date. Our own police as I said do not say anything other than shooting or homicide. I’m glad the statistics are at least being reported.
I think that we have to TRY to hold them accountable. Shame them. Thanks for this. Be relentless in our demand for common sense gun laws. These weapons should NOT be had with ZERO RESPONSIBILITY by the owners of these weapons! This is insane!
The president offers his condolences. For what it’s worth. And there will be prayers and funeral services. For what they’re worth.
And politicians in the pocket of the gun lobby, tons of them, will stand on the floor of the House and the Senate and say how tragic this shooting was and how something must be done — but don’t punish the law-abiding gun owner because guns are American freedom, guns are apple pie, guns are the flag, guns are the national anthem.
And they won’t tell you that every honest opinion poll for a generation in this country shows Americans are sick to death of the carnage.
The National Rifle Association hates those polls. Guns are money for them. Gun-makers make them rich.
Today the Supreme Court hears a case that could send extreme partisan gerrymandering to the dustbin of history. @AriBerman explains. pic.twitter.com/RgUPeA4ZYj
Good morning to you. Yes, one can hope but forgive me if I don’t trust the corrupt SCOTUS that gave us the abomination known as Citizens United. I will be very ….. very surprised if the conservatives on the court do the right thing for the country
In Alabama, we have on the one side a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, Doug Jones, who is best known for locking up the Klansmen who had escaped accountability for more than a quarter century after having bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
On the other side, we have a Republican candidate, Roy Moore, who in 2004 opposed Amendment 2 to the state constitution. Amendment 2 would have removed language in Alabama’s constitution that requires separate schools for “white and colored children.” It also would have stricken references to poll taxes, a form of black disenfranchisement used in the state during the Jim Crow era. These remnants of the pre-Civil Rights period have no legal meaning anymore since they’ve been superseded by federal law. But they remain on the books as a kind of lasting stain. Moore didn’t want the language taken out because it “would have allowed federal judges to force the state to fund public school improvements with increased taxes.”
Right now, in Washington, there are Democratic leaders and strategists who are trying to decide how much if anything to invest to help Doug Jones beat Roy Moore. They’re afraid of their own shadows, fearing that their support will convince Alabamans to vote against the candidate who locks up Klansmen instead of the candidate who appears to be a Klansman.
When Charles Koch founded the Cato Institute in 1974, his mission (in words from Cato’s journal) was “protecting capitalism from government.” That meant the end of public education, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as cutting taxes on the rich and government regulations on business. It was a tall order—but now, for the first time in 44 years, Koch and his billionaire libertarian friends like Robert Mercer and Peter Thiel are within sight of their goal of building a true oligarchy (Aristotle’s “rule by the rich”). The current Trump tax cut will deliver billions of dollars into the pockets of the Koch’s, the Mercer’s, the Trump’s, and their heirs. Creating a political economy in which the wealthy minority rule over the middle and lower class majority is a hard task. It requires mechanisms that suppress voting and mechanisms for propaganda that convince middle class voters that cultural divisions are more important than economic equality. In both these tasks, Google and Facebook have been a key to the success of the 1 percent.
The role of the internet in propaganda and voter suppression is a two-pronged attack. Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World foresaw our current dilemma—Huxley’s assertion was that technology would lead to passivity. The ease with which we could consume mind-numbing entertainment and distractions would ultimately rot our democracy. And this is exactly what may be happening. In the 2016 presidential election, 94 million citizens who were eligible to vote declined to exercise that privilege (compared to the 136 million who voted), according to the United States Election Project. And a much larger percentage of millennials are nonvoters. As Kevin Drum reported in Mother Jones, “In 1967 there was very little difference between the youngest and oldest voters. By 1987 a gap had opened up, and by 2014 that gap had become a chasm.” Beyond the extreme apathy, Republican legislatures in many states have instituted far more restrictive voter ID laws, which have also contributed to lower voting rates. But Steve Bannon wasn’t content to leave voter suppression to chance. One of his brilliant moves was to circulate memes on Facebook targeting only African American voters with the text: “Hillary Thinks African Americans are Super Predators.” By all accounts it was a successful voter suppression strategy.
Okay, I need to rant. I’ve done two Resist bot messages, but decided few minutes ago I needed to call my three reps. Began with Corker’s office. DC was busy so I called local. Here’s what I said: Twenty 1st and 2nd graders getting mowed down by a gun did nothing. But, I am going to give this another try. Here’s my message for all three of my reps: Get off your cowardly asses and DO SOMETHING! The lady immediately began playing dumb/stupid with…….I’ll be glad to take your message but you’ll need to be more clear. I said, “Are you REALLY serious? Let me repeat the beginning of my comment. I said it again, then asked if she still needed more explanation. Yes, she needed to me clarify why I was calling blah, blah, blah. I ended up screaming at her. She said she would be glad to take my message, but wasn’t going to be yelled at and she hung up. How’s that for a crystal clear message of what we are up against?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I then called Alexander’s office and began by saying I hoped this call goes better than the one to Corker……that I hope she doesn’t play stupid like
the other woman. I repeated the exact same message, She got it and I thanked her.

U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller has a distinctly modern problem. The president, judging by his tweets, could try to pardon people in his circle even before prosecutors charge anyone with a crime.
Mueller’s all-star team of prosecutors, with expertise in money laundering and foreign bribery, has an answer to that. He’s Michael Dreeben, a bookish career government lawyer with more than 100 Supreme Court appearances under his belt.
Acting as Mueller’s top legal counsel, Dreeben has been researching past pardons and determining what, if any, limits exist, according to a person familiar with the matter. Dreeben’s broader brief is to make sure the special counsel’s prosecutorial moves are legally airtight. That could include anything from strategizing on novel interpretations of criminal law to making sure the recent search warrant on ex-campaign adviser Paul Manafort’s home would stand up to an appeal.
The waiting stinks and is so frustrating and difficult. And,yes lots of damage being done in the meantime. However, this gives us a clue of M’s dotting every ‘i’ and crossing every ‘t.’

–BECAUSE THEY ARE IN A BAD MOOD.
We don’t need to wait for big explanations about ‘Motivations’ again. The motive was to KILL as many people as quickly as possible.
Murderous, avaricious gun manufacturers and the NRA — GUNS, GUNS, GUNS are the problem in America.
Congress get on and PASS the screamingly obvious laws The People have long agreed on and demanded.
Stephen Paddock is being humanized as a man who “liked to gamble,” “listened to country music” and “lived a quiet, retired life.” When white folks commit horrible crimes their actions are often placed in a context where they are described as “good people” and “all American.” This is all so “surprising” and “unimaginable,” we are told, because this person was so “ordinary.” By comparison, when black or brown folks or Muslims commit horrible crimes they are usually depicted as one-dimensional monsters.
There will be no “national conversation” about the connection between toxic (white) masculinity and American gun culture. In the mainstream news media and broader public discourse there certainly will be no discussion of the fact that white men are 31 percent of the population but commit 63 percent of mass shootings. Such a fact is forbidden or explosive, because it connects race, gender, guns and death.

Roy Moore, the Republican Party’s U.S. Senate nominee in Alabama, has argued that pre-school is a Nazi-like institution for brainwashing children into being liberal. Hearing that, one might be tempted to think such a person would struggle to win a Senate campaign in this country.
And with that in mind, consider the latest polling from the Yellowhammer State. BuzzFeed noted late last week:
The Senate race in deep-red Alabama might be within reach for Democrats, after the Republican nomination of Roy Moore.
The poll, conducted by Opinion Savvy and commissioned by Decision Desk HQ, finds that Moore leads Democratic opponent Doug Jones 50.2% to 44.5%. While still not a close-close race, that’s definitely closer than a normal Senate race in Alabama for an off year.

This same shooting could happen again today or tomorrow and we all know it.
Being played again by the Gun Lobby media and its “MOTIVE” derailing narrative running out the clock.
National Security conditions like these are purposely created by the GOP/NRA architects of Chaos and Fear.
GOP Congress tell us how many deaths will satisfy your owners? Do they want to take out all of us? After that will you act?

OH MY GOSH, watching PBO make a surprise appearance to wish MO happy anniversary and tell her how much he loves her was EVERYTHING. She was so touched and excited, you can just feel the love. I choked up!!
I love it when she talked about how her father treated her and how fathers have to not just be there but raise daughters with all the possibilities and strengths as they do their boys.
Loved everything about the interview. One of the many things about it is that it reminds people of what we had and should continue to have in the white house. Reminds us that what we have now is not normal and that it does not serve us in any way that is good and right. In some ways, I fear for the Obamas now more than I did when they were in the white house; their very lives are a rebuke to what is going on now and we know how too many white people hate the evidence of Black excellence; it upends everything that they have taught themselves to believe about Black people and many will do all that they can to destroy anyone and anything that gives the lie to it. They and their girls are ever in my prayers.
WHO is terrorizing the SHOOTER? We know who they are.
nra is terrorizing the American people while taking our cash.
Republicans in Congress are terrorizing the American people while taking our cash and abusing the Vote.
KOCH is terrorizing this nation and our Congress to profit themselves.

Polls point to a competitive Senate race in Alabama
10/03/17 11:20 AM—UPDATED 10/03/17 11:30 AM
By Steve Benen
Roy Moore, the Republican Party’s U.S. Senate nominee in Alabama, has argued that pre-school is a Nazi-like institution for brainwashing children into being liberal. Hearing that, one might be tempted to think such a person would struggle to win a Senate campaign in this country.
And with that in mind, consider the latest polling from the Yellowhammer State. BuzzFeed noted late last week:

😍😍😍

Congrats, VC on your Au ⭐ Furst 😉
❤ TOD Community.
❤ ❤ ❤ Happy 25th Anniversary to The Obamas! ❤ ❤ ❤
The feed worked for me; thanks for the link. Michelle says exactly what is on her mind; no dancing around an issue. There was a sweet, happy anniversary message from her hubby at the end.
I came in doing the question and answer period with Shonda. Michelle is a remarkable woman in so many ways, but always so down to earth and real and funny.
the feed must have gone down…what a bummer
This same shooting could happen again today or tomorrow and we all know it.
Being played again by the Gun Lobby media and its “MOTIVE” derailing narrative running out the clock.
National Security conditions like these are purposely created by the GOP/NRA architects of Chaos and Fear.
GOP Congress tell us how many deaths will satisfy your owners? Do they want to take out all of us? After that will you act?
What is the nra’s — MOTIVE?
What is the GOP Congress–MOTIVE?
What is the Gun Manufacturer — MOTIVE?
nra gave $30.3 million to Trump’s campaign – the most the nra has ever spent on an election.
By one month before the election one third had been spent attacking Hillary.
Was there any connection to Russia?
You can see my MOTIVE.
nra MOTIVES.
GOP Congress MOTIVES.
Gun Manufacturer MOTIVES.
Junior’s Gun Silencer MOTIVE.
Junior’s Gun Silencer MOTIVE.
After long delay, here she comes!!
TERRORIZING us every day:
Republican Congress and the nra gun associate$ cooperate to Terrorize the American people.
Motive: Undermine our National Security and make us more vulnerable to nations like Russia.
Motive: Destroy America’s Leadership.

OH MY GOSH, watching PBO make a surprise appearance to wish MO happy anniversary and tell her how much he loves her was EVERYTHING. She was so touched and excited, you can just feel the love. I choked up!!
i know…i almost thought that she would swoon…i would have….i love his ODES to her…it is simply Marrrrrrrrrvelous
She was like a schoolgirl, practically blushing!!
i know….i loveeeed it
That was an extraordinary interview…one of my favorite comments is when Michelle Obama spoke about making room for children’s voices…esp girls
I love it when she talked about how her father treated her and how fathers have to not just be there but raise daughters with all the possibilities and strengths as they do their boys.
i did…i tried to get a ticket but they were sold out in 2-3 days
too*
Loved everything about the interview.
New post.

Go to the Root.
