A Leader Who Cares For His Nation

    A terrible storm came into a town and local officials sent out an emergency warning that the riverbanks would soon overflow and flood the nearby homes. They ordered everyone in the town to evacuate immediately.

    A faithful Christian man heard the warning and decided to stay, saying to himself, “I will trust God and if I am in danger, then God will send a divine miracle to save me.”

    The neighbors came by his house and said to him, “We’re leaving and there is room for you in our car, please come with us!” But the man declined. “I have faith that God will save me.”

    As the man stood on his porch watching the water rise up the steps, a man in a canoe paddled by and called to him, “Hurry and come into my canoe, the waters are rising quickly!” But the man again said, “No thanks, God will save me.”

    The floodwaters rose higher pouring water into his living room and the man had to retreat to the second floor. A police motorboat came by and saw him at the window. “We will come up and rescue you!” they shouted. But the man refused, waving them off saying, “Use your time to save someone else! I have faith that God will save me!”

    The flood waters rose higher and higher and the man had to climb up to his rooftop.

    A helicopter spotted him and dropped a rope ladder. A rescue officer came down the ladder and pleaded with the man, “Grab my hand and I will pull you up!” But the man STILL refused, folding his arms tightly to his body. “No thank you! God will save me!”

    Shortly after, the house broke up and the floodwaters swept the man away and he drowned.

    When in Heaven, the man stood before God and asked, “I put all of my faith in You. Why didn’t You come and save me?”

    And God said, “Son, I sent you a warning. I sent you a car. I sent you a canoe. I sent you a motorboat. I sent you a helicopter. What more were you looking for?”

      The perfect presidential tweet: recognizing and commending all who are doing the brave work, inspiring the rest of us by reminding us of one of our core values, then giving those who are out of harm’s way an avenue to provide help. No empty words about how terrible it all is because that is evident.

      All of the photos that I have seen of people from all backgrounds and ethnicities helping each other, I am reminded that the great majority of us are kind, decent people who would never hurt anyone. I am reminded of PBO’s words from the 2004 convention that we are not these surface labels, we are Americans who live in these United States of America.

    For those looking to provide aid to Hurricane Harvey victims, please consider making your dollars do double duty! TeamRubicon us an emergency response organization that primarily employs and utilizes the skills of our military veterans. The last couple of years I moved my donations from the Red Cross to TeamRubicon so the donations are also aiding our vets:-)

            Figured that! Thanks! I wish this organization had a higher profile because of the work they do with vets. Our veterans have such incredible skills but often have no idea how to put them to work once they leave the military. This organization provides them with a great opportunity to use those skills while responding to disasters. The fact that they actively recruit vets is just such a plus. And I do feel as if my dollars are doing double duty by supporting them.

      I spread my donations in two ways: Organizations that deal with the immediate fallout of disasters and locally based, proven organizations that will provide help and aid through the long haul.

    So FUBAR will be grifting (in the rain) while Harvey is possibly picking up more strength (and moisture 😦 ) in the Gulf of Mexico:

    I have no idea where in Texas FUBAR will be, but he will have limited options if he plans on flying into southeast Texas.

      I say let the guy land in Houston, and then put him in a garbage can with a broom so he can tour the storm damage however and wherever he wants. I’m sure he will get lots of photos taken of him by everyone stranded on the roofs of their homes, vehicles, businesses, etc. He’ll probably wave at everyone and hand them a red MAGA hat, and declare it a very successful trip when he sees all the Tweets with photos of him all over the Twitterverse. 😝

    Propane Jane RT’d this thread, which is very informative and explains that Houston designed its flood control system using existing and new freeways (tunnels are under the freeway), which spares residents and businesses from flooding during typical rain events.

    So the photos we see of freeways as rivers is how the system was designed to work — obviously the photos of EVERYTHING under water is catastrophic and caused by the dual high pressure systems thwarting the storm from moving beyond Houston. 😦

    In response to the Monday morning quarterbacking going on re: evacuating Houston, it’s sobering to remember that in 2008, over 100 people died on the roads during the mandatory evacuation to escape Rita (less than a month after the devastation of Katrina).

    Here’s a link to Wikipedia about the evacuation of Houston in 2008 — a literal nightmare for everyone involved — I’m pretty sure I would have died from a heat stroke… 😦

    am I the only one who feels that some of the gop individuals in leadership positions are using the catastrophe in Houston as public relations opportunity rather than more emphatically stating the bleak facts on the ground?

    there seems to be a discrepancy between what regular people are saying and the information public/elected individuals are pushing out;

    public officials : everything is going smoothly at all levels:

    regular individuals: we are in dire situation and getting help from neighbors and volunteering strangers;

    some in the media: homegrown demagogue is on top of it ….. although he is tweeting garbage and has never even appointed people to these critical positions. he has not paid attention to anything in this area except to propose huge budget cuts. he is relying on the infrastructure left in place by PBO;

    ordinary public servants: are taking their position very seriously and are doing what they are trained to do and have committed to do;

      If he has mental health issues now – he has always had them. He is the man who was elected – he has no knowledge, no empathy & not much of a brain – he campaigned to make money for self & when he won – took on the job to make money for self. Six months in still has no idea about the job & no interest in learning.

      White men are always given the “mental health” out.

      The Americans that voted for him, the Americans that supported him, they knew who he was, he told us who he was. It wasn’t like he suddenly changed once in office, it just became more “real”. Maybe his voters,and supporters need to step back and have their own mental status checked and their own fitness to be called Americans.

    Here we go again.

    https://www.mediaite.com/online/trump-reportedly-fed-up-with-rex-tillerson-rex-just-doesnt-get-it/

    Jonathan Swan reports that the president “has been growing increasingly frustrated with his Secretary of State,” with Axios’s Mike Allen adding that U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley is a possible replacement.

    One source told Swan that after Trump returned from a recent meeting on Afghanistan, the president said “Rex just doesn’t get it, he’s totally establishment in his thinking.”

    “We’ve been hearing for weeks, from sources who’ve spoken to the president, that Trump is getting more and more fed up with Tillerson, who has still yet to staff his agency,” Swan reports.

    • August 28, 2017 at 9:28 am

      Trump’s cognitive decline, his mercurial disposition, his intense and incessant need for chaos and drama and headlines, ON TOP of his unqualified choices for every position under his purview, are what feeds this constant staff churning. It’s beyond ridiculous.

      • 62 desertflower
        August 28, 2017 at 9:40 am

        Yes, but none of these people, from the fake president to his entire administration actually CARE about the responsibility of their positions. Most want to dismantle the agencies they are in charge of for ideological reasons or personal monetary gain. They have no interest in a govt. that works well and for the people. They want govt to FAIL. That IS their purpose. Rules and laws be damned….they can’t all end up jailed fast enough for me. My prayer every day is that they all rot.

        • 63 arapaho415
          August 28, 2017 at 10:19 am

          It’s true that “traditional” GOP want government to fail, but DJT and staff aren’t ideological — they are ONLY interested in more money in their own pockets and in the pockets of their 1% buddies and families.

      Yes this is good & hopeful and thank goodness folks are able and willing to help one another, as it should be. However, they will run out of resources, which is why we have govt . I fear some folks may believe that this is proof we don’t need govt. I suspect when FEMA fails to fulfill obligations to clean-up/ damage asst. and housing asst. folks may get a rude awakening to how necessary good govt. is, especially in a disaster.

      However Houston survives this, it will be due to ordinary citizens rather than the government. Even some of the shelters are being operated and stocked by individual communities rather than either federal or local government resources. Saw a profile this morning of a school housing 100 people, entirely stocked and operated by the neighborhood rather than any government agency. As Linda noted above, there is a huge disparity between what is happening on the ground and what the officials are saying. AND to top it off, the officials are now taking credit for the work of individuals to make themselves look better. When you are begging for individuals to bring in their own boats to rescue people, what you are witnessing is a government failure of massive proportions.

    All About The Base: Why Open Primaries and Caucuses Are a Terrible Idea

    Trevor LaFauci
    August 28, 2017
    ………………………………………………..

    As bad as caucuses are, open primaries may be even less democratic. Because open primaries allow for ratfucking to the nth degree. By having someone show up on primary day and choose a party, there’s no guarantee that this person has noble intentions in mind. He or she can be voting for their chosen candidate or can be voting against a candidate for a party that they are not even a member of. Take Michigan for example. During the state’s March Democratic primary, Hillary Clinton had a 99% chance of winning according to all polling projections. Yet due to 7% of Democrats crossing over to vote on the Republican side and 4% of Republicans voting on the Democratic side, she ended up losing a close race that nobody saw coming. It’s hard to claim open primaries can lead to a transparent voting process when that system allows for an 11-point swing by people who voted solely with nefarious intentions.

    Yet since both of these systems helped Bernie Sanders, his supporters seemingly approve of the idea of replicating them nationwide. And they want to do this because these systems would help them and nobody else. The typical Bernie Sanders supporter has time to give up on a Saturday afternoon. He can afford childcare. He doesn’t have to work weekends. He can be loud and proud of his candidate and not worry about what his neighbors might think of his pervasive political beliefs. He can also decide, late in the game, that he wants to show up on primary day and register for a political party that he’s never been a part of. In either of these cases, this Bernie Sanders supporter will feel right at home, being among his fellow supporters in a safe and secure environment.

    But while both of these systems help Bernie Sanders supporters, they do not help the Democratic base. You know, the ones who actually voted for Hillary Clinton. The 94% of African-American women who voted for Hillary. The 82% of African-American men who voted for Hillary. The 75% of Asian-Americans. The 66% of Latinos. The reliable voting bloc of the Democratic Party that has now overwhelmingly become people of color and not White men and women, who failed to support Hillary Clinton at the levels needed. In fact, 53% of White women voted for Donald Trump and 63% of White men did the same. The base, the all-important and necessary supporters of the Democratic Party no matter what, has officially become people of color and these are the people who represent the present and future of the Democratic Party.

    • 135 Don
      August 28, 2017 at 12:24 pm

      The problem was that President Obama was competent no matter the crisis where others have shown their incompetence. It has gotten to the point where if Trump chews his food with his mouth closed it is held as some sort of victory. To be mediocre is one thing, being mediocre is not a crime. But to be mediocre and an asshole is not acceptable under any circumstance.

    • August 28, 2017 at 12:33 pm

      I was just thinking about this last night. Not one word from the GOP or MSM about how this is a disaster for Trump but OMG, every day we had to witness PBO’s newest Katrina or Waterloo. Disgusting.

    • 137 Sandy1110
      August 28, 2017 at 1:02 pm

      That was because of the GOP collusion to make him the failed one-term president.

      Everything had to be framed as a potential failure, and the GOP knew they had the media megaphone to amplify their b.s. claims.

    Just saw the Mayor of Dallas on the weather channel. Dallas is preparing to take thousands of refugees from Houston. They have a number of buses positioned to bring people from Houston as soon as I-45 is clear enough to drive.

    When I taught I had a number of students from Houston. Most of them said they did not want to return. As one student said, “it’s so nice to breathe air, not water.” They told stories of what happens when they had floods…..not anywhere near as bad as this one. All kinds of critters came up in the water….snakes, lizards, alligators…..one family moved their entire living to the second floor of the house, because the first floor had been flooded so many times it was uninhabitable. I have a feeling northern Texas will gain in population after this catastrophe. This is almost unbelievable. And the heavy rain will come at least until Wednesday.

    My heart is breaking for the folks in Houston. Emergency rescue teams have been sent from around the country. I know a crew left from my area Saturday. I heard 45 was planning to travel to Corpus Christi tomorrow. I guess he needs his photo op. His tweets have been cold and talking about himself. He has no empathy. I was so happy and proud to see PBO’s tweet which thanked the 1st responders and others and gave people info about giving to the Red Cross. I miss my President! 😦

    Exiles on Pennsylvania Avenue: How Jared and Ivanka Were Repelled by Washington’s Elite

    ” What is off-putting about them”, one political veteran told me, ” is they do not grasp their essential irrelevance. They think they are special.”

    excerpt:
    The couple does enjoy some perks that come from their relarionship as ‘ first among equals’ in the White House, according to the Washington veteran-although West Wing advisers reportedly mock Ivanka as “princess royal” behind her back.

    ” Trump is emotionally dependent on his son-in-law and his daughter, ” said the Washington veteran. ” But they can’t do anything for him. All they can do is make him feel better about what his life has come to.”

    The couple has been surprised and disappointed by their reception in Washington, and have lost friends back in elite circles in New York City.
