Just saw something amazing and heart-stirring on SYTYCD. Travis Wald choreographed an dance to Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday for the all-star troupe. The multi-racial dancers were dressed in costumes similar to those worn by Alvin Ailey dancers from Revelation. There was a tree on stage and at various points the dancers were like the leaves on it. It was chilling and a bit over the heads of some of the young people who were in the studio audience, but others got it and were not sure how to react. This was incredibly brave and woke for Travis to do this.
The show has been interrupted for 45’s show so I changed the station for counter-programming so as not to give him the ratings.

From what I’ve seen on twitter, all the GOP have forgiven DT for his Charlottesville comments now that he managed to read the teleprompter tonight. And Mitch McConnell has an 18% approval rating in KY after DT’s attacks on him. In short, they will never do anything to get him out of there, even if he were to shoot someone on 5th avenue. Nothing but a bunch of sniveling cowards with zero principles. They will let him destroy our country if it allows them to be re-elected.

Probably because he’s such a lech when it comes to women, but is totally threatened by other men. Thus him being a bully and all. Usually bullies are terrified people. But to be threatened by your own children, especially a pre-teen, says something about his self image and self esteem.

Hi CD, how are you (and the grandbabe) these days?
There is indeed lots of proof out there that this excuse for a man is a lech. In truth tho, I didn’t think of him as being threatened by his children so much as him being oblivious to *anyone* and anything that doesn’t favorably showcase *him* (and only one of his children does that). You may have a point though.

Hi VC, thank you for asking.

I am hanging in there. However the stress since Nov 8th, plus some family stuff and community uprisings are really taking their toll on me. I’m having to withdraw from so much to protect my health. Not TOD, but much of the rest, for the time being.

The grandbabe, Penny, is doing wonderfully. She is 20 months old and already jabbering up a storm. Fortunately she is a very happy and curious babe, so we have lots of fun sharing the world with her.

It’s good that Penny is curious about her world – that curiosity will go a long way to help distract you and her parents from some of the garbage that’s been ongoing since Jan 20. Theo is at the moment, literally, working on the final component of his master’s thesis. Problem is he doesn’t like writing ‘essays’ and he needs to put his research, compositions, analysis and whatever else into that format before submission. :/

Like I said. Distraction from reality.

As usual when Donald Trump is putting on his public display of ignorance, things are heating up behind the scenes. This week while Trump was distracting everyone by first siding with white supremacists and then firing one of their heroes, Robert Mueller was putting the pressure on Trump Jr.

Mueller and his team have focused their attention and resources on the Trump Jr. meeting with Russian representatives as a key to their entire investigation according to BuzzFeed. While they say they are are trying to establish what Trump Jr’s “intent” was for the meeting, what they really mean is they are trying to establish his guilt.

      Thanks DF.

I thought all of Congress left town, surprised to see them working during recess.

      From the article 😦 :
“It is unclear, however, how much information lawmakers will be able to obtain from Simpson this week. Attorneys for Fusion GPS have indicated to the committee that its client relationships are confidential.”

Also from article, background on Simpson (surprised to see that GOP are taking an active role in #TrumpRussia investigation):

“During last year’s heated Republican primary race, Fusion GPS, a private research firm founded by former Wall Street Journal reporter Glenn Simpson, was initially paid about a million dollars by wealthy Republicans and then later worked for Democrats, all of whom wanted to dig up dirt on Trump and plant negative news stories, according to political operatives.

Simpson, who will appear in a closed session on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, hired the former MI6 agent Christopher Steele to compile the now infamous “dossier,” which alleged that members of the Trump campaign had colluded with Russian agents to damage Hillary Clinton, Trump’s Democratic opponent.

Republicans in Congress are stepping up their efforts to uncover the funders of and sources for that controversial document and its, so far, largely unverified claims as special counsel Robert Mueller’s high-profile probe of those alleged ties heats up.
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has made it clear that Simpson’s work has landed him in the crosshairs.

“We will also pursue details about Mr. Simpson’s role in this event and the creation and circulation of the dossier that started this whole controversy,” Grassley said in hearing in July.

As a reporter, Simpson specialized in coverage of money laundering and Russian organized crime. In an appearance on a panel at a film festival in 2016, Simpson explained that he started Fusion GPS after leaving journalism because he thought his investigative skills would be valuable to a range of wealthy clients.”

Republican committees have paid nearly $1.3 million to Trump-owned entities this year

By Matea Gold and Anu Narayanswamy
    August 21 at 12:13 AM

The nearly $1.3 million spent by Republican political committees at Trump entities in 2017 has helped boost his company at a time when business is falling off at some core properties. Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private club in Palm Beach, Fla., lost at least 10 of the 16 galas or dinner events it had been scheduled to host next winter in the wake of Trump’s controversial response to a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville.

The market has been much more bullish for the president’s new hotel in Washington, which has emerged as the go-to venue for GOP power brokers and groups on the right. Trump International, whose room rates appear to be the most expensive in the city, generated nearly $2 million in profit in its first four months, as The Washington Post previously reported.

From Charlottesville to Boston, Rightbloggers’ “Alt-Left” Story Falls Flat

    AUGUST 21, 2017

After the horrifying violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, on August 12, many of us were anxiously bracing for the next big alt-right event, scheduled for Boston last weekend — particularly since top conservatives had been explaining all week that a super-violent “alt-left” was at least as much to blame as the Nazis and Confederates for the attack that injured nineteen and killed Heather Heyer. So the Boston result — forty thousand citizens overwhelming the right-wing ralliers, with violence largely avoided — came as a great relief, as did the relative quietude of the right afterward.

After Nazi and Confederate throwbacks rampaged in Charlottesville and one of their number ran down a bunch of counter-demonstrators — a method of attack approved by alt-right trolls, Republican state legislatures, and at least one prominent rightblogger — killing social justice warrior Heyer, the Trump administration and its supporters found themselves caught flat-footed.

Normal people sided against the Nazis and Confederates, but the president, a self-admitted believer in genetic superiority, instead made excuses for the Nazis and Confederates, portraying political violence at Charlottesville and elsewhere as a “both sides” sort of thing in which the “alt-right” is counterweighted by an alleged “alt-left” — which, accounts of left- vs. right-wing violence show, is a typically Trumpian view (i.e., bullshit).

Black conservatives who backed Trump are suddenly offended — but they sold their souls long ago
After Charlottesville, the Republican Party’s black boosters are full of regrets. So why don’t they quit?

I must confess to a guilty pleasure. For me, the most “entertaining” part of the post-Charlottesville TV spectacle has been watching black conservatives with all their tears and feigned outrage and surprise at Donald Trump and the white supremacists, neo-Confederates and Nazis he coddles. The cognitive dissonance of today’s black conservatives in Trump’s America is almost awe-inspiring.

Where was the pain and surprise when Trump selected Jeff Sessions, a man who has worked for decades to keep blacks from voting and was deemed too racist to serve as a federal judge — by the Republican Party, in 1986 — as his attorney general, the leading law enforcement official in the nation?

Black conservatives have supported Donald Trump specifically and the Republican Party more generally because being a professional black friend and racial mercenary is highly lucrative. It also pays a type of psychological wage where serving as the “special one” who is “not like the other blacks.” That makes many black conservatives feel better about themselves. Internalized white supremacy can be a powerful and dangerous thing.

    Worth Reading
    from the essay

Charlottesville did what Charleston could not because the events in that city directly affected White people. This wasn’t simply something that happened in an historically African-American church in a deep-red state. This was a something that happened in an affluent, middle-class community with a prominent public university in a purple state that has been trending blue in recent elections. In other words, it was something that could have happened anywhere. People choose to live in and around Charlottesville because they feel safe. Ten days ago, an army of torch-wielding, violent Nazis entered their town, weapons in hand. When on Saturday, three people died including activist Heather Heyer, the community felt threatened as if their own very lives were at stake. For those in the community who grew up in privilege, it was the first time in their lives they had felt this way and for them it was terrifying.

And it was this newfound White fear that finally got the ball rolling on the actions that occurred over the past week. Because the last time White people in this country felt legitimate fear was during World War II when the threat of Adolf Hitler taking over the world was very, very real. When Donald Trump refused to denounce, then half-heartedly denounced, then again refused to denounce the Nazis present in Charlottesville, White people became enraged. Their lives are supposed to be valued and protected and when the president seemed unable and unwilling to do so, it became apparent that something had to be done.

      August 22, 2017 at 10:56 am

There may be another factor at work here. Last week, Anna Marie Cox made an interesting statement on some MSNBC show. She said: “I’m glad President Obama is not in office” to the effect that his status basically created a sense of complacency on race in the white community. She noted he provided “comfort” to the whites in the country in a way that was not helpful to race relations. Those were not her exact words but the meaning of them. They have stuck with me, because I think she is correct. Having an AA president and an AA attorney general allowed many in this country to believe that we had made more progress on race relations than were warranted. While some of us white Americans were well aware of the simmering racial tensions, for many the presence of PBO and his calm manner allowed them to ignore what was simmering just below the surface. Let me be clear here, she was NOT blaming President Obama. Rather, she was blaming white Americans for their superficiality. I think this is another factor at work here in addition to the racial differences in the two cities that were affected.

      • August 22, 2017 at 11:46 am

i don’t accept this…because the racist visceral that has been levied against President Obama…the killings of Blk men by the police…went unchallenged by the white community…because it did not threaten them…as Trevor is saying in his essay…and …i will never blame President Obama for the racism of white folks…

        • 81 FoxfireTX
          August 22, 2017 at 12:47 pm

Sheila, you’re missing the point here. Not blaming President Obama, but for many white people they believed by having an AA in the office of President we no longer had to “worry” about racism. It’s that whole “post-racial” thing. And I saw it at work many times, even with members of my family. The idea that racism was still pervasive in this country just did not occur to them while he was in office. This time, they could not ignore it because President Obama was not there to soothe them. Finally, the neo-Nazis and KKK were much more blatant under DT in Charlottesville than anything we saw during PBO’s time in office. For me, seeing those torches just sent chills up my spine. I just think there were a number of factors that made Charlotteville different than Charleston. And yes, the racial makeup of the communities was definitely one of them, but I don’t think it was the only factor.

          • August 22, 2017 at 1:02 pm

that white folks did not recognize racism because a blk man was President is in my opinion.. is unacceptable…if they did not notice the vitriol that was hurled toward him and his family…if they did not notice the obstruction that was levied on him by the GOP Congress…if they did not notice black folks being killed by police…then it is not because they cannot see…they did not want to see…….but they did see it when the white nationalists….Nazis turned that HATE rhetoric on them….

            • 83 FoxfireTX
              August 22, 2017 at 3:08 pm

Agree totally. For a whole lot of people in this country, they do not want to see that which is so ugly. Is that any surprise to you? It’s no different than that same group also “forgetting” we are at war because no one in their family is in the military. If there is any “benefit” to DT it is exposing the GOP for what it has been for many, many years; a racist, bigoted party that doesn’t give a damn about anyone other than than the 1%.

              • 84 0388jojothecat
                August 22, 2017 at 3:18 pm

Plus the “ugly vitriol” was toward PBO, is family, and AA’s in their communities and NOT toward the safe white communities. They saw PBO being calm and soothing inspite all the hate directed toward him and he got things done. When the shit hits the fan and it is in their backyards they get all afraid. When they see that Twitler is OK with these hate rally’s and white people die in their communities that is when things need to be stopped. For the ACLU to fight for the Nazi’s and KKK to HAVE these rally’s only to come out and say “NO MORE” now that these people are armed to the teeth is a good thing.

    September Will Be a Meat-Grinder
    by Martin Longman
    August 21, 2017

Lindsey McPherson at Roll Call does a nice job of laying things out for you so you can begin to get a sense of the challenges Donald Trump and congressional Republicans will be facing when they return from vacation. As of now, there will be only twelve days in September when the House and Senate are jointly in session. The Senate has a few more legislative days on their schedule than the House, and they’ll surely need them.

I’ve written a lot about the debt ceiling, which needs to be raised by September 29th to avoid a default, and the appropriations bills, which need to be passed by September 30th to avoid a government shutdown. Twelve legislative days in the House and a few more in the Senate might be adequate to handle those two pressing issues, but Congress also has to reauthorize spending for the Federal Aviation Administration, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and the National Flood Insurance Program before they expire on September 30th. As I’ve mentioned, if they want tax reform, they need a new budget resolution. Somewhere in all of this, they need to figure out if they can reset the sequester so that they can fund Trump’s larger navy or get some funds for the border wall Mexico is supposed to be financing. Any change in the sequester’s spending caps would require a separate bill to amend the old Budget Act.

If you think the Republicans have a plan for accomplishing this all in the time allotted, you’re quite mistaken. If anything, their plan is to ignore the committee work that has been done on the FAA, CHIP and Flood insurance and just punt by just passing short-term reauthorizations. The same will probably be the solution for the appropriations bills. Some kind of continuing resolution will be attempted that buys them time, although it’s uncertain that they could succeed in passing one. Weird, desperate ideas are cropping up:
