Interesting that despite the benefits (thank you, Cesar Chavez!), there’s still a shortage of workers.

“To make the jobs more attractive, farmers are offering salaries above minimum wage, along with paid time off and 401(k) plans, but even that’s not proving enough.”

Think (but not sure) this is reporting for Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties (there was a woman from Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo Counties, so I think it’s these two counties [the NBC video was filmed in Oceano, SLO county]).

      • August 9, 2017 at 11:37 am

Latinos have been leaving CA in droves due to the draconian methods of deportation imposed by Trump and Kelly. Restaurants have also lost significant numbers of workers. It bothers me that after decades of treating farmworkers like dirt, employers are now willing to raise pay and offer benefits.

I can see produce rising every time I grocery shop Meta; even onions and green bell peppers are getting expensive. This is just the beginning. Trump is hurting the pocketbooks of the farmers and folks who voted for him against their own interest.

      • August 9, 2017 at 12:45 pm

Me, too. I eat a lot of vegetables and I really noticed prices creeping up at the market yesterday on basic items as well as fruit. It will be hard for families to maintain a healthy diet at this pace.

The kindness and compassion just hits my heart. How could “we the people” have gone from that to the cruelty of the man pretending to be our legitimate president now? How could so many Republicans not see President Obama’s humanity and empathy and if they could, think that those qualities are a bad thing?

Brown skin trumps everything in this country. They saying that Black folks” must be twice as good to get half as much is true.” Black and Brown people in public life must be like Caesar’s wife, “above reproach,” while white males can have their mistakes and egregious actions forgiven and awarded 2nd and 3rd chances. The injustice and danger of this is being starkly portrayed with the contrast of PBO’s tenure and that of 45. I only hope and pray that we get out of the circumstances sooner rather before 100’s of thousands if not millions lose their lives, the economy wrecked, the social contract destroyed almost beyond repair, and before our children, as well as many adults, suffer ptsd from the horrors of this administration and the GOP congress.

I’m with you on all of this. I worry very much about this wonderful country and plan to really explain democracy and the Constitution much more thoroughly and carefully with my 8th graders this year than I have before. I plan to weave it throughout the year as we go through our early history as a country. It is breaking my heart to watch what’s happening now.

PBO was such a blessing to us and to the world; he is truly named. He did all that he could to bind our wounds, to give us hope for a better day, and now we have someone who is ripping the bandages off before those wounds have completely healed. My heart breaks for the world. We will have to answer for what our laziness, ignorance, hatred and greed have done to the world. The rest of the world will stand in righteous judgment against us.

I have come to a point of focus since Trump made his threat. I cannot change the minds of those who protect themselves from all opposing information because it might convict them that they are a part of wrongdoing. What I can do I’ve decided is begin a fierce focus ( sometimes called prayer) on discernment among our fellows and the courage to go through the cognitive dissonance they will surely feel and which be painful if the blinders are lifted. The spirit can move and move quickly.

Report: Trump Receives ‘Propaganda Document’ That’s Only Good News
    By MATT SHUHAM
    Published AUGUST 8, 2017 3:40 PM

The Republican National Committee and White House communications staff produce what’s known by some in the White House as the “Propaganda Document” for President Donald Trump twice a day, Vice News reported Tuesday.

The documents are exclusively composed of positive media coverage. Citing three unnamed current and former White House officials, Vice described them:

[T]he folders are filled with screenshots of positive cable news chyrons (those lower-third headlines and crawls), admiring tweets, transcripts of fawning TV interviews, praise-filled news stories, and sometimes just pictures of Trump on TV looking powerful.

    • 64 CEB
      August 9, 2017 at 11:52 am

PBO asked the staff who sent h I’m those 5 letters a week to do the opposite; he really wanted to hear from people who did not agree with his policies, etc. because he firmly believed in hearing all voices. PBO knew he was a MAN and that he had won the right way and in a true majority, did not need lackeys or unwarranted praise.

BTW, I am leaving on vacation to Vienna & Budapest today. My husband is a masters swimmer and he qualified to swim at the World Championships there, and so it was on his bucket list to compete there. We expanded the trip to include Vienna first, meeting up with my sister who just arrived there on Monday, and then traveling with her to Budapest next Monday. We’re there a week, then sister goes home, and Hubby and I go on a cruise up the Danube. We return the 28th of Aug, and I’ll be missing my first day back at school (work). This will be a once in a lifetime trip for us, so we are very grateful that we have the means to do it, and very excited to see these beautiful cities. I will be checking in to TOD from time to time as we have wifi, but might not have time to comment. Quite honestly, I need a break and I’d like to spend a couple of nights sleeping through the night. I hope it’s possible.

Hell, TOD-obots! It’s great being home again after weeks of feeling like I’m out of the loop. I confess there were lots of jokes made at Trump’s expense on the tours that I took and lots of my fellow passengers quick to point out we were not Americans.

Republican makes provocative comments about McCain’s brain cancer
    08/09/17 02:18 PM—UPDATED 08/09/17 02:30 PM
    By Steve Benen
It’s no secret that Republicans were disappointed when Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) joined Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), and 48 Senate Democrats in derailing the GOP’s far-right health care plan two weeks ago. But just how far are some on the right prepared to go to express their dissatisfaction?

Politico notes one Senate Republican who broached a highly provocative subject.

Sen. Ron Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican who voted in favor of the GOP plan to repeal parts of Obamacare last month, suggested Tuesday that Sen. John McCain’s deciding vote against the proposal may have been related to his brain cancer.

“I’m not going to speak for John McCain, you know, he has a brain tumor right now, that vote occurred at 1:30 in the morning, some of that might have factored in,” Johnson said on the radio program “Chicago’s Morning Answer.”
