      Way to go DF.

      This is so important!

      I need information about Singapore. My son Heath accepted a teaching job there and is leaving this Thursday. Things happened so fast. He has always wanted to teach overseas. He did in Venzuela for a year then he got engaged And married she wouldn’t go. Now he is divorced and back to his dream. I am so happy for him, but will miss him terribly.

        I have friends who were missionaries in Indonesia and the Philippines for years. Their favorite city is Singapore. She said it is safe, beautiful, clean, and has beautiful flora. She would envy your son going there. I hope this is a good place for him. Following a dream is wonderful. I know you will miss him. I’m thankful my son is only four hours away.

          Thanks Carolyn. Guess that is what I want to hear.. That it is a safe place. He taught in Venzuela before he got married. Now he is back to following his dream.

        Housing is expensive. Owning a car is expensiver. Clean and lovely city. Great mass transportation. Littering gets you a fine. Excellent choice of restaurants.

          I’ll pass that info on. I think he gets a housing stipend. Guess that is worth a lot. He is good with public transportation. Don’t think he wants the hassle of driving there. Maybe after he is there a year.

        I am originally from Malaysia which is right next door to Singapore to the north .

        I second what everyone said about the city being clean, expensive accommodation, fab public transit etc … I would add, be prepared for the heat (and humid). For cheaper dining out – cross the border into Johor Bahru in Malaysia. And if your son loves travel …the island of Penang in Malaysia is a lovely place to visit.

        I hope he enjoys his stay … 🙂

        My daughter was in Singapore for a year studying for an advanced law degree after she obtained her law degree. She said it was beautiful, and clean, but overly strict for little things. She left when trying to study for her bar exam in 120 degree heat. She had no air conditioning and tried to use the public library with AC to study, but they had a rule that you could not bring your own books into the library. Lucky me as that meant she spent the summer with me instead.

          Thank you Obama Grandmama. We have talked about the heat. He does know some of it from spending a year in Venzuela. I am sure it’s hotter in Singapore though. I definitely won’t be visiting when it’s that hot.

    I and others here have repeatedly focused on the culpability of evil pence in the russian collusion and how he lies as easily as his boss;

    unlike most in the beltway punditry and media and most gop, we know that before Special Counsel Mueller wraps up his investigation, evil pence will not be able to get away with his claims of innocence;

    we have also speculated that as soon as the homegrown demagogue suspects or understands that evil pence is planning to backstab him in a bid to become his successor, then there is no way scoundrel#45 will not take him down with him.

    so each time we see news reports of evil pence doing advance planning with donors and other scumbags in the gop, we should just get our popcorn ready;

    those two will have a major blow up either through the homegrown demagogue tweeting or by implicating each other in the legal proceeding

    • 52 desertflower
      August 7, 2017 at 11:14 pm

      I find it strange that some in the media talk about Pence actually running and possibly being in the WH, AS OPPOSED TO JAIL FOR HIS PART IN ALL THIS COLLUSION, quite puzzling…and amusing.

        first, they have a stereotype narrative they want to push about evil pence – they rarely mention his actual record in the cultural wars and how he bankrupted Indiana;

        hey, they even rarely mention how he violated the email system that he shamelessly criticized HRC for;

        but perhaps most important is that as usual, they have got a story and they are focused on it as an echo chamber of republican talking points and most to lazy to connect the dots.

        for instance, in spite of the fact that they reported on the fact that Dem Congressman sent a letter to him about Flynn, they forget it;

        they also forget how they breathlessly reported about the fact that he had retained a defense lawyer;

        My same daughter I mentioned being in Singapore for a year spent six months while getting her Masters studying Women gender issues in Uganda. She visited and volunteered while there collecting clothing and needed items for an orphanage of abandoned children who had AIDS. They called her George Washington’s daughter due to her blonde hair. She is the adventurist and loved her stay there.

        Thanks a lot for these highlights. Uganda is very beautiful place with respect to the natural environment & ordinary people. It also has a collection of many diverse cultures which give the country vibrancy and lots to share. But it is the dictatorial regime that keeps people on edge, frightened and has pushed rampant corruption among the leaders. So they don’t want to give up power & just keep exploiting the ordinary people

      Been to this spot in Nakuru many times.

      I am glad to see people lining peacefully to vote.

      Now one hopes that they are allowed to vote without interruption, that there is no ballot-box-stuffing and that ballots are counted honestly.

      Last time, the majority of the violence was post-election when different people think they were not allowed to vote or their votes were not counted correctly.

    i wonder if anyone else has noticed something….

    how the pundits seem to skip over the Obama Administration when giving examples of how a white house is supposed to run…when they want to talk about a Democratic white house they go all the way back to Clinton…like there is no more recent Dem administration…it is beginning to peeve me

    • 77 99ts
      August 8, 2017 at 9:23 am

      They like to add a few negatives while talking about dem administrations & they love adding negatives about the Clintons. There is NOTHING negative they can give as to how President Obama ran the White House.

      What amazes me is how they talk of trump on vacation – never mentioning that he is at a golf resort – alone. Great GOP family values – ignored by the media.

      Since I don’t have a television, can’t speak to what’s being broadcast there, but @cbsradionews does mention PBO’s administration (although usually as negatively as possible, unfortunately — really hate how they choose to present the news).

      Can’t recall the last time @cbsradionews mentioned either Clinton, though I stopped listening to the radio immediately after the Nov election — couldn’t endure hearing nonstop FUBAR news after that gut-wrenching, sickening moment.

    Sometimes the world is so weird. We fine people who DON’T vote

    Australia is one of a small number of democratic countries that have compulsory voting, with an even smaller number actively enforcing the law.

    Over a series of months Bost was sent three penalty notices which asked him to pay a $20 fine or provide an acceptable excuse for not voting.
    Bost told the court he did not see the letters and would not have been able to read them. He is illiterate.
    “I don’t check my mail box that often,” he said.
    But the court showed no mercy, issuing Bost the maximum penalty, a fine of $180.
    Before he could accept his fate, the AEC’s lawyers put forward their legal costs, a sum of $123, which was added to Bost’s fine.
    “That was a shock, the lovely Electoral Commission adding their fees.”

    What did Bost learn about the value of democracy?
    “I should have walked in and got my name crossed off and walked straight out.”

    {You don’t have to record a valid vote – you can get your vote & put it in the ballot box without marking it}

        other civilizations have their own versions of tribalism and religious fanaticism…i think that folks always try to find all kinds of excuses to explain away what is happening today…but what they never mention is the influence of institutional racism..white supremacy…and white privilege….they never talk about how the Southern Strategy makes white Americans susceptible to the lies that gin up their fears and despair

        it started with the founding fathers…who sacrificed black people in order to form a not-so-perfect union…they codified racism in culture and law…they waged genocide on the native American people in their Conquest of North America…using the same blueprint used to subjugate black folks…

        and today we have white nationalists in the White House dictating policy…and degrading democratic practices…voted for by the so called white folks who want to Make America White Again…

        There can be no Truth and Reconciliation til white America faces it Original sin of institutional racism…white supremacy…white privilege…

        One more thing….

        WE have white folks who want to put on a series called Confederate….a series that depicts how life would be if the Confederacy had won-a white Nationalist wet dream!

          August 8, 2017 at 12:36 pm

          I wonder how the same people would feel if White Nationalist produced a show about how Hitler would have taken over the world and exterminated not just all the Jews but Muslims, Blacks, Asians, etc., as he wished. Then found people from all these backgrounds to be part of the film to legitimize the project. I can just image the uproar especially from the indignant media talking heads.

        Just alil bit about this group Inclusiv
        The mission of Inclusv is to ensure staff, consultants, and vendors of color are found at every professional level within advocacy, policy, and campaigns and elections. We envision those who are disproportionately represented in almost every negative measure of well being in our society have a seat at the table to create strategies and solutions for change. Too long organizations and institutions have been working on behalf of communities of color and not working with them. We don’t need well-intentioned ideas that continue to fail. We need to jumpstart professional inclusionary efforts to keep up with the demographic changes in our nation as well as to protect access to the American Dream for all.

        they gathered this data….most of us here already know this….if there were more POC in DEM leadership…would we be having this trouble with Bernie/BernieBros….would the bludogs have ran from the President….heck…would Hillary have had a better chance….hmmmm…it always matters who sits at the table…

        • August 8, 2017 at 2:23 pm

          Here are key findings from our report, which can be read in it’s entirety at Inclusv-2017-State-Democratic-Parties-Diversity-Report-3.pdf

          40 states and the Democratic Party of Washington, D.C. participated in the development of this report.
          These 41 state parties reported that they employ 401 staffers, 273 (68%) of which were White.
          14.5% of staffers were African American, 8.2% were Latino/Hispanic, 3.7% were Asian American Pacific Islanders, 2% were Arab Americans, and 0.75% were Native Americans. 2.7% were unspecified people of color.
          21 states reported having zero Latino staffers, and 25 states had zero AAPI staffers.
