The Most Interesting Men In The World

Jonathan Goldsmith: How The World’s Most Interesting Man Befriended The World’s Most Powerful Man

Damn,” he said in a half-hushed whisper. “This guy’s good.” I could hear President Obama as he walked up the path behind me and spied the multiple arrows I had placed, undetected, in the bull’s-eye. I waited until I could sense him close by. Then, with the casual swagger that had become my calling card, I turned, and feigning annoyance, delivered the line I had prepared:  What took you so long?” Obama, recognizing me immediately, clapped his hands and doubled over in laughter. There’s no way he could have been as happy and amazed as I was to be there.  The president and I had met earlier that year at a fundraiser in Vermont when he was just preparing for his reelection campaign. He had impressed me with his encyclopedic recall of the outrageous escapades of my TV character.

Still, I was more than surprised when I later got a call from one of his deputies. Would I like to be part of a special surprise for the president’s 50th birthday celebration at Camp David? Ten of Obama’s best friends—most of them people he had known as far back as high school—were on the list. And me. All top secret. Life didn’t get any more interesting than this. Would I like to come? You bet I would. The first time I met President Obama, I was part of a welcoming committee in the state of Vermont, where I now live. He was just starting his second run for the presidency, and we were invited to be in a greeting line of about 200 people. Our 10-second photo-op turned into a several-minute conversation. Still, I thought, this must be a setup. Someone has to be playing a joke on me, and they had prompted him with information. But when Obama mentioned that he loved a New Yorker article about me and quoted from the commercials, I knew he was being sincere. I drove home feeling as if it was a dream. The president of the United States is interested in me, the imaginary most interesting man in the world.

    The President at War
    Published JULY 21, 2017 1:08 AM

…there are lots of details. But each has the same effect. President Trump will define the scope of Mueller’s investigation. Mueller will continue his investigation only as long as President Trump wants: Trump and his spokespeople have now repeatedly said that the President reserves the right to fire Mueller. The President is also prepared to pardon some or all of the people under investigation. Again, many details, one upshot: Mueller can only do what the President allows. That amounts to saying that the President will not allow the law to operate with respect to him or his family.

From a different perspective, we are beginning to see what everyone who’s studied Trump’s business history knows: to paraphrase the Army maxim, Trump’s business would not survive first contact with real legal scrutiny. So he made clear in yesterday’s Times interview that any review of his or his family’s business history would be unacceptable.

This paragraph from the Post is particularly striking:
“Trump has been fuming about the probe in recent weeks as he has been informed about the legal questions that he and his family could face. His primary frustration centers on why allegations that his campaign coordinated with Russia should spread into scrutinizing many years of Trump dealmaking. He has told aides he was especially disturbed after learning Mueller would be able to access several years of his tax returns.”

What it all comes down to is this. As I’ve written before, President Trump has been in crooked business for decades: money laundering, mob partnerships, various straight-up swindles. Statutes of limitations will have run out on most of those infractions but not all of them. This has always been obvious to me and everyone else who’s looked closely at Trump’s record. What recent weeks has made clear to me is that there’s almost certainly lots of dirty laundry tied to money deals and connivances with the Russia government.

These New York Times articles they’ve been rolling out where they’re interviewing all these white conservatives is such BS. They voted for a racist monster because oooooooh, look a minority and ooooooh how dare we go from a black president to a woman president. The horror! They voted for destructive policies and now that hand is going to bite them along with everyone else, we’re supposed to feel sorry for them because maybe there’s some voter regret? Utter nonsense.

Go interview the people who didn’t vote for an incompetent moron and his band of morons in congress and are now forced to have horrors visited upon them daily.

Senate GOP confirms controversial Trump nominee to appeals court
    07/21/17 10:42 AM
    By Steve Benen

Asked this week about his party’s difficulties in governing, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told reporters, “We have a new Supreme Court justice,”

The point wasn’t subtle: the Republicans may be struggling to advance their legislative agenda, but the party is nevertheless moving the federal judiciary to the right. And while this may seem like an argument intended to rationalize failure, McConnell’s argument isn’t wrong.

Yesterday, for example, Senate Republicans voted unanimously to confirm John Bush, a Donald Trump nominee to the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. And who’s John Bush? Let’s revisit a recent piece from Slate’s Dahlia Lithwick:

That would be funny, but for me it’s hard to imagine if he’s so insecure he couldn’t be Press Secretary on camera, that he’d be cool with making fun of himself on camera on purpose.

  17. July 21, 2017 at 12:17 pm

Spicer has been a stream of lies and cover ups for a guy with no respect for rule of law or protocols. Trumputin doesn’t know right from wrong.
No moral compass. The disconnect is mind boggling. People like Spicer are so much expendable material – Donald uses everybody up.
This here must be his cousin: (WaPo) Judge will cut jail time by 30 days if inmates (even 18 year olds) agree to be sterilized.

…It is hard to overstate the salience of this victory in Obama’s long, long game — and perhaps we are still too close to events to see it as clearly as we should. But here it is: a testament to the skills and vision and tenacity of our greatest living president, whose political shadow completely eclipses the monstrous, ridiculous fool who succeeded him. Like the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, we’ve seen this story many times before in the last eight and a half years. And we also know the ending. Meep, meep. …

One good thing about the homegrown demagogue’s time in the political limelight is that it has enabled the world to identify & scrutinize all the corrupt and evil scumbags at local, national & international level. Now if they could be legally & politically fumigated like the political & socio-economic cockroaches they are. Psycophants are attracted to each other

Because they act like toddlers when they don’t get their way. You know you have to keep saying NO to a toddler until they start having a melt down then fall asleep. These Rethugs won’t fall asleep until we say NO after this vote next week then they go to sleep for one month just to revive this zombie bill as many times as they deem necessary.

      • July 21, 2017 at 4:40 pm

jojo hope OK to say as cannot help it.
–we probably won’t agree on this. (Although yes GOP we’ll keep ON keeping on bringing up this old piece of killing rope that they claim is
better than the ACA (that is working really well) and they hope we’ll be the ones that fall asleep at the wheel.
–The thing to do with our babies is to offer a couple of alternatives and keep going till the No changes to a Yes. The more upset they
are the tighter and closer we must hold them. No, not let them “cry themselves to sleep”. I had all of that junk and a good thrashing
while lying in bed for good measure. Let’s not treat our babes – who don’t even know why they are upset — like to the deaf ears of
        the McConnell plutocrats. w/love.
