          i know..i feel as you do….i pivot from one outrage to another…from one unbelievable revelation to another…yet when i read the comments section,..i still see the hatred… the left …keeps talking about single payer at a time when the ACA is under assault…i told someone how do your plan to get single payer without changing the face of Congress…i truly feel like we are in The Twilight Zone…i know we have said that “Elections Have Consequences”…Having the GOP Control all three branches of Gov…is a nightmare…but esp with Trump at the top…and his being part of a Russian Conspiracy to undermine America…

          I recently signed up to be part of a group called TURN PA BLUE….a local effort to organize and turn PA democrat…putting my money where my anxiety is….

    Oh dear. So sorry to hear this news.

    The first woman to win the prestigious Fields Medal prize for mathematics, Maryam Mirzakhani, has died in the US at the age of 40.

    She had been fighting a four-year battle against breast cancer which spread to her bone marrow, according to the Tehran Times.

    The Iranian-born professor was awarded the Fields Medal, often compared to a Nobel Prize for Mathematics, in 2014.

    It was given for “her outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces.”

    Wisconsin professor Jordan Ellenberg described her research in a blog post at the time: “[Her] work expertly blends dynamics with geometry. Among other things, she studies billiards.

      Very sorry to hear about that. What a great loss to get family and to the world. Why do “the good ones die young”? She could have contributed so much more to the lives of so many. May she rest in power and in peace

    Yes, I know that feeling experienced by this new citizen. I was recovering from a near-death many months stint in the ICU, hospital admission😀. I prepared for my citizenship test in-between medical providers’ test, treatments, and examinations while still hospitalized. I had to ask for special permission to leave the facility for a few hours & go to take my citizenship exam. I had to re-learn to write steadily & the time i spent on the ventilator made me have to learn to swallow & speak clearly again. The immigration officer who conducted my test reminded me that I could have requested for another date to take the exam. I replied that i was aware of this but that i had waited so many years & gone through much that i could not even take a chance of “falling of the conveyor belt” of immigration navigation again. A few weeks later, I opened my envelope with the note telling me that I had passed the exam & giving me the dates & location where I would take the path of citizenship. I was ecstatic and very emotional when I opened my envelope that contained among other things, my letter from President Barack Obama welcoming me as a new citizen. I made a copy for framing & hanging but I kept the original in a fire-proof safe with my most important documents. Each time I look at that letter, I think of the many hours I started volunteering for his campaign before the official campaign apparatus came into the state for the primary contest. Of course i am lucky that I have met & shook hands with PBO multiple times. I have my photo standing next to him. I have also met & gazed at FLOTUS & The First Daughters. So i wonder at how life has come full circle, from a volunteer who didn’t think about what I could personally gain, to all the policies PBO pursued & benefited me directly. I am an extremely lucky person 😀😀😀

      Problem is, if they ‘give’ us the same coverage, we’ll still be screwed. Because the new Rethug bill is designed to make it easy for rich people and impossible for poor people. Members of Congress all have enough money to pay the premiums, the co-pays, the high-end meds, etc.

      Just to understand…will you be banned from buying a plan for six months, will you have a six months waiting period once you buy a new plan, or both???

      And, I suppose the illness that isn’t covered under the Cruz plan means you have pre-existing condition and therefore automatically puts you in a high risk/higher premium tier; right?

      • 86 desertflower
        July 15, 2017 at 6:48 pm

        Here’s the text:

        —The Cruz Amendment is a disaster for health insurance buyers. We’ve written before about the amendment crafted by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). It would effectively destroy the healthcare market nationwide.

        The amendment would allow states to authorize any insurer to offer bare-bones policies as long as they also offered at least one ACA-compliant policy in that state. This opens the door to bifurcating the insurance market. Younger, healthier buyers, especially males, might sign up for cheap policies without coverage for hospitalization, substance abuse, prescriptions, maternity or preexisting conditions. That would force everyone else to buy a fully compliant plan; since such a plan would be filled with customers with potentially risky and costly conditions, its premium would soar. As it became progressively less affordable, all but the sickest buyers would leave, making it even more costly.

        This is the definition of a “death spiral” that Republicans claim they want to avoid. It makes a mockery of their promise to protect people with preexisting conditions, since the cost of insurance for them would soon be stratospheric.

        —Buyers of cheap Cruz plans would be locked out of the insurance market if they get sick. A little-noticed aspect of the Cruz proposal is that the cheap plans it allows would not qualify as legitimate insurance coverage under the GOP’s “continuous coverage” rules.

        Those rules, embodied in both the House and Senate GOP repeal bills, guarantee coverage for preexisting conditions as long as the buyer maintains insurance coverage without a break of longer than two months. Under the Senate bill, anyone with such a lapse would face a six-month waiting period for new insurance before the preexisting condition guarantee would be effective.

        That means that individuals who get sick and discover that their Cruz plan won’t cover their illness wouldn’t be able to buy full coverage for at least six months. It’s a classic bait-and-switch, but you won’t hear it being bragged about by Senate Republicans. They don’t really want you to know.

        • July 15, 2017 at 7:33 pm

          Thanks for providing that detail, desertflower.

          I believe I also remember in the first phase of BCRA, once you purchase insurance after such a lapse, you have a six month period (during which time you are paying premiums) before your coverage kicks in. If that is correct, (and if I am interpreting this correctly) that means a person could go a year without being able to purchase insurance and being able use its full coverage.

            July 15, 2017 at 8:00 pm

            It’s not good. Seems not only will there be a lapse in time when an individual has no insurance, but the cheap shit/bare bones insurance that doesn’t cover anything, just takes your $$ and leaves you high and dry if life happens.

            $$$ over people. Always

      That line really hit me: ‘they’re blatant about it on purpose, to instill a sense of helplessness in the population.’ It’s amazed me that they’re so brazen, and it has indeed left me feeling flummoxed.
      As always, I look to PBO for guidance, and he’s still doing the good work, still saying what needs saying, still filling me with hope. If I weren’t so fortunate to have his example (if I’d just moved on to the new ‘president’) I’d be in deepest despair.

    I was just watching a clip from CBS news.

    the people in it casual mentioned that the 8th person reported to have been in the don jr meeting “is a relative of the person who set up the meeting”;

    this is the first time I am hearing that specific description and it made me wonder what that means (given that you can describe the person who set up the meeting from different parts of this saga. here are my permutations:

    ….. was it a relative of don jr?

    …. was it a relative of the British promoter, rob goldstone?

    …. was it a relative of the russian “pop star”, emin agalarov? here the possibility is his father, the Russian oligarch, aras, agalarov;

    …. was it a relative of the russian lawyer Natalia velenitskaya?

    ……. was it a relative of the Russian prosecutor general (Yuri Chaika)?

    ….. was it a relative of putin?
