Happy #InternationalWomensDay!

Michelle Obama

Celebrating the beauty and diversity of our country on this #InternationalWomensDay with some of the many fierce and promising girls here at DC’s Cardozo Education Campus. I loved visiting this school because it tells the American story in so many ways. Three years ago, Cardozo established its International Academy with only 150 students, but today it boasts nearly 400 who are thriving in and out of the classroom. By embracing young immigrants and their diverse cultures and contributions, Cardozo is a model for our entire country. The girls I met with today are ready to take on the world. We’ve just got to make sure that the world is ready for them.

They’re both still here – and reminding us, in the most graceful and classy way – that WE need to continue to be here, too! The wave of relief that washes over me seeing this is a powerful reminder of just how abnormal and depressing so much of everything else going on actually is…

Glad to be able to come on here and see out beautiful forever FLOTUS is going about showing joy! My power went out with a bang at about 10:30 this morning. I’ve just come out to find some internet to borrow and catch up a bit. They aren’t even having estimates of restored service until tomorrow. High wind have knocked out power to about 100,000 customers statewide.

Sorry to hear this. Being without power is the pits (in addition to the dark, stewing about all the food in the freezer you’ll have to throw out… and NO coffee [I’m with Meta’s Mom on this]).

IIRC you’re in one of the Midwest “M” states — Michigan? Heard on the radio that tornadoes have been active in that area this week (Minnesota, I think). 😦

Way too early for tornadoes, but Twitter tells me that many areas south of you didn’t have much of a Winter.

      • March 8, 2017 at 9:14 pm

Yes, Michigan! Good memory! No tornados here, just very high winds, some in excess of 60 mph. The Detroit Edison’s outage center is out of power! My neighborhood seems to be a prime spot for outages. The people just a few houses north and those across the street and those to the south have power. I’m at my friends house for the night since I need electricity for my cpap machine. I can sort if sleep without it, but it’s not a lot of fun.

    • March 9, 2017 at 3:46 am

Sorry to hear about your power outage. How are you managing to keep warm?

Tip for you: Check your homeowner’s policy for coverage of loss refrigerator/freezer contents. Last spring, my power was out for two days; called my insurance company, they verified outage with the electric company and sent the funds via ACH while I was on the phone.

      • March 10, 2017 at 12:06 am

Wow, thanks! The power is still not on, but I am hopeful for tomorrow because I saw what looked like repair trucks in my neighborhood this evening. There are over 800,000 customers without service in the state. I slept last night and again tonight at my friend’s house so I could have power for my cpap machine. The temps were around 50 degrees yesterday and today. When I left this evening the house temp was 54. But tonight and for the rest of the week it will be in the 20’s. If I don’t have power tomorrow I will have to board my cats and my bird. I’ve let a tap run just in case. The ground isn’t frozen so the water coming into the house isn’t that cold so maybe it will be okay. I have a fireplace so that will help a little when I can be there, but I have to be out all day tomorrow.

Has anyone heard anything about the identity of the artist who will do the presidential portrait of PBO that will hang forever in the White House? It really sucks that the family will have to be hosted by the worthless 45 crime family. I remember how gracious the Obamas were and they made the event such a happy and fun one for the huge Bush family when they showed up for the ceremony for Dubya’s portrait.

A man who embraced and hired smart and talented women. A man who is lucky enough to be married to a woman who is more than enough of everything all by her damn self; and a man who is helping her to raise two kind, thoughtful and assertive young women. As a young man who had been raised without a father, he stood as father to his younger sister when her father died. A boy growing into a man inspired by his grandmother’s wisdom and sacrifice and by his mother’s belief in him. A man who was embraced as a son by Mrs. Marian Robinson (I love that photo of the two of them on election night 2008 that showed them holding hands as they waited for the results) to the extent that Michelle once said that she took his side when they had disagreements. Surrounded by women all of his life, he has always valued them, our self-described proud feminist president, Barack Hussein Obama.

On Election Day, Flynn penned an op-ed calling for the release of Gulen to Turkey. PBO had asked Erdogan to provide documentation for his request because it was imperative that we prohibit political motives from our legal process to determine the validity of the request. Flynn was paid to advocate release on Day One of Trump’s admin for a paid POLITICAL purpose. They need to throw the book at him.

In fact, TRMS reported on a Russian airplane landing in rural areas as obscure as Concur, NH or Charlotte, NC during the campaign each time the Trump jet arrived for a rally. Let’s do this:

  62. 130 57andfemale
    March 9, 2017 at 10:43 am

My Trump wannabe boss just lectured me on putting all “inner city” people to work, taking away all welfare and making a better health care plan. I asked him if he knew that rural white areas use far more welfare than the inner cities. I asked him if he thinks POC are “lazy” what does he think of an ex-coal miner who won’t do anything else, and lives off of our tax dollars.

He said, “They need other industries to provide jobs in those areas.”

To which I said, “Then you just supported Hillary Clinton. Because she had detailed policies to do just that.”

This bastard says ACA was a “disaster” because he had to provide health care to his employees. He employs about 400 people. He tried everything he could to not provide health care; and then when he couldn’t get away with it, he offered the worst plan possible. Sociopath.

I am so sick of the “better choice” crowd. Idiots: your employer gives you a choice of one or two plans. When the HR dept. decides on those plans, they’re not thinking about the wellbeing of employees, they’re thinking of their bottom line. How stupid are people?

    • March 9, 2017 at 12:44 pm

I almost wish there was an ACA version of “It’s a Wonderful Life”. While I acknowledge that there can be improvements to the act, I wish people could see how much worse it would have been without it. And not just the obvious like people not being able to get insurance because of pre-existing conditions, or the lifetime caps. I’m also talking about the things that insurance companies are, at a minimum, required to cover. I’m talking about how much more premiums would have increased. I’m talking about the disparity in cost for women vs men. In this version of “It’s a Wonderful Life”, the GOP legislators, Corporate CEO’s (especial Insurance Companies), so-called physicians like Tom Price, and the wealthy in general would live the life of the working class, the poor, and the sick. They would have to make *real* choices between having a roof over their heads or feeding their family versus purchasing healthcare insurance — not whether to buy an iPhone as Chaffetz flippantly suggested.

But as always, if it’s not something that will have a direct, negative impact to them and theirs, they don’t care…which is what this GOP proposed bill infers.
