I can’t believe the news today about wider guidelines for deportation. The most important and terrible thing is the searing human cost, but the thought of all the resources being committed to this miserable and useless program is also appalling. I’d like to gather all the Trump supporters in one huge group and say “Raise your hand, anyone that whose life has been directly and negatively affects by an undocumented immigrant”. The hands could probably counted on ten fingers. So we are going to put all our resources for solving a nonexistent problem, while we allow these murderous white citizens with guns to go around killing children, church-goers, theater-goers, mall-shoppers at will. I am basically an optimistic person, and I believe President Obama when he talks about the values and vision of our country. But truly it is a daily, even hourly struggle to hang on to that optimism and that vision. But I will hang on because I will not allow ‘them’ that victory.

Meanwhile in Michigan, the House has passed a bill to reduce the state income tax to nothing over a period of years. Since this is 75% of the states operating budget, it looks like we will be going down the Kansas path soon. They say that school funds will be held harmless, but seriously, in a year or two when they run out of funds where do you think that money will come from.

While I am really enjoying and appreciating the rowdy and feisty white folks at these town meetings, I am also struck by how privileged they are. No one is calling them thugs or sending cops in riot gear to arrest them. One cop that I saw on video from another scene was smiling and saying proudly “This is what democracy looks like” as people protested outside of a representative’s office. Contrast this with the arrest of the Director of the NAACP who was led away in handcuffs after a small sit-in outside a representative’s office (I think the photo was featured on an earlier post or I saw it on the msn feed). Many thanks to those who are stepping up and speaking out; I hope that your efforts will help the most marginalized among us as well. More than anything, however, we need a political answer. We have seen what can happen when states get democratic leadership: Louisiana, expanded Medicaid; Virginia, sentences commuted and voting rights restore; and North Carolina, dropping the appeal to keep racists, restrictive voting laws. GOTV for all of the new people who are running for local, state, and national office is critical.

In another act of extraordinary kindness and valor, a 52 year-old A-A woman in Louisiana, saw that a young white policeman was having trouble as he tried to handcuff another white guy in a traffic stop. According to the msn article, she stopped asked if he needed help, then called 911. The suspect wrestled the policeman’s baton from him and started beating him with it. This grandma got out of her car, jumped on the suspect’s back and wrestled him down long enough for the back up to arrive, The cop that she helped is this big, beefy young man, while she is this tiny be-spectacled woman. She was hailed as a hero by the department.
You never know where your help will come from when you are in need. When our country is in need, we will not have any allies left to help us if 45 and his crew continue as they are. Globalization is here to stay, our country is multi-cultural, and everyone needs everyone else.

“ICE is legally empowered to conduct sweeps, and Trump is within his rights to lift Obama’s restrictions. But two recent high-profile arrests suggest that ICE may be altering evidence and manipulating facts in order to move in this aggressive new direction.”

      February 21, 2017 at 7:33 pm

Both those stories are highly disturbing because it shows that ICE agents are lying so that they can justify deportations. Scary times. This is why you don’t elect a racist to the most powerful position in the country.

      • February 21, 2017 at 7:49 pm

They’ve adopted an SOP of “guilty until proven innocent” knowing that will be difficulty for those being arrested, especially if they’re being denied access to needed resources.

Rep. Charlie Dent (Pa.) on Tuesday became the fourth House Republican to back legislation requiring congressional approval in order for President Trump to remove or lessen U.S. sanctions on Russia.

Dent joins three other GOP co-sponsors for the bill: Reps. Adam Kinzinger (Ill.), Tom Rooney (Fla.) and Michael Turner (Ohio). Four Democratic lawmakers are also co-sponsoring the bill, including House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (Md.).

The bill mirrors legislation introduced earlier this month by a bipartisan group in the Senate.

At his White House press conference last week, Donald Trump acknowledged the progressive activists working to protect their health care benefits, but the president quickly added that these Americans don’t really count.

“We’ve begun preparing to repeal and replace Obamacare,” he said. “Obamacare is a disaster, folks. It’s a disaster. You can say, ‘Oh, Obamacare.’ I mean, they fill up our rallies with people that you wonder how they get there, but they’re not the Republican people that our representatives are representing.”

It was a bizarre peek into the thinking of a president who doesn’t fully understand the basics of our democracy. Elected Republican officials, in Trump’s mind, should focus on representing “Republican people.” Others may speak up and petition the government for redress of grievances, but as far as Trump is concerned, their voices are neither important nor relevant.

Republicans are elected to represent Republicans, the argument goes, not all of their constituents. It’s a zero-sum game: if your side of the political divide isn’t in a position of power, then you might as well sit down, shut up, and stop asking impertinent questions at town-hall forums in which GOP officials want to hear from “the Republican people” – as opposed to, say, the American people.

Ivanka Trump hit with lien in New York for failure to pay taxes on her high end jewelry business

It has been a tough month for presidential first daughter Ivanka Trump, with retailers dropping her fashion lines due to poor sales, and it got worse as it was revealed that she has been hit with a lien for failure to pay back taxes owed by her New York jewelry store.

According to documents acquired by the Daily Mail, Trump owes over $5,000 in taxes related to Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry — officially listed as Madison Avenue Diamonds LLC — located in Trump Tower.

According to the report, the high-end jewelry business routinely sells items in the $1,000 to $20,000 range.

Well, well, well…even though I don’t necessarily like the cabinet picks, it seems that some of them are actually *trying* to do their jobs and actually thought they would be able to run their departments without being micro-managed.

Many Cabinet nominees joined the administration believing they’d have wide latitude to pick lieutenants, but they’re beginning to realize Trump’s powerful advisers are looking over their shoulders. The White House’s approach has already slowed hiring — and the dozens of vacancies at key agencies could make it more difficult to implement some of Trump’s policy proposals.

Examples of clashes have popped up across the government:

When an informal adviser to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos recently recommended a candidate for a high-level Senate-confirmed position at the agency, the adviser was told that the candidate had little chance of getting the job because the person had previously worked for an organization that was seen as being at odds with Trump’s policy positions..

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has clashed with White House officials over top officials in his department, sources say. The White House saw some of Mnuchin’s picks as too liberal or not supportive enough of Trump…

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has struggled with the White House to appoint his own aides, with significant pushback from the White House over deputy positions and ambassadorships.

Housing and Urban Development, Shermichael Singleton, a top official, joined the department before being terminated when criticism of Trump surfaced in a final White House review.

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao is “getting high marks within the building,” one transportation source said, “but she is frustrated with the White House.” Several people in or close to the department say they were confused earlier this month when two different officials purported to be the chief financial officer.

We already know that he doesn’t really want to be president– at least he doesn’t want to do the job.

*In his mind*, calling Mar-a-Lago the “Southern WH/Winter WH” makes his weekly jaunts okay. It’s not a vacation because he is generating income for his business(es).

When you think about it, PBO was criticized for many things that were acceptable for previous presidents, and is now more than acceptable for 45.

The Story: backstage with Brandi Carlile at the Letterman Show in 2015. Both were guests that night on the show. Brandi was performing a song with the Avett Brothers. Yesterday, Brandi announced Cover Stories to commemorate the tenth anniversary of her landmark album, The Story. It is an amazing project in music but almost more importantly in how it benefits refugee children. Rather than just re-release the original recording, Brandi has recruited the most eclectic group of artists to sing covers of all the songs. ADELE! PEARL JAM! DOLLY PARTON! AVETT BROTHERS! I mean the list just goes on and on. 14 songs, 14 different artists. Trust me, it’s amazing. Brandi was kind enough to play the recordings for my wife and me yesterday. And here’s the thing: every artist is joining Brandi in donating ALL proceeds from this album to War Child UK, an organization dedicated to helping children who have become refugees because of war. To quote my former boss: “These children are no less curious, hopeful and worthy of love than our own.” Check this album out: http://www.brandicarlile.com. — petesouza
