    (For TOD foodies 🙂 )The World’s Top Chef Is America’s Mathew Peters:

    Mathew Peters has accomplished the impossible. Last week, he won the prestigious Bocuse d’Or international cooking competition in Lyon, France. While most Americans have never heard of the Bocuse d’Or, it is a major event in the culinary world and the results are taken quite seriously in Europe and across Scandinavia. The United States has never finished higher than second place in the 30 years since the competition began….But the Bocuse d’Or is not just a cooking competition—it is a test of both physical and mental fortitude. Peters and his deputy, Harrison Turone, had five hours and 35 minutes to create two elaborate platters in an arena full of spectators who spent most of the allotted time screaming, singing, and blowing horns. A lot can go wrong when you’re expected to create beautiful and delicious dishes in front of your cooking heroes. (No sweat, right?) But Peters and Turone were able to pull it off and top the 23 other teams in the competition. The Daily Beast asked chef Peters to keep a diary of his gold medal-winning week—from workouts at the gym to the little things that made a big difference to how it felt when the medal was won:

        My pleasure, tnmtgirl!

        My boys tried to blow the game though! 5 Freshman score 70% of their average 80pts. a game. Second in the nation behind Kentucky. The little munchkins were up 14 at Bama with 2 minutes to go and managed to somehow let Bama go on a 10-0 run 😦 Final was 82-77. First time we swept Bama since ’09. I’m still salty about Tuesday’s loss against the VOLS too 😎

    Such a stupid ass. Entire hashtag kicked his butt.

    Our friend AlanInAustin reacted with some spit and vinegar to Donald Trump’s edict that females on his staff “dress like women.”

    Here’s a picture of my mother in her welding outfit. During WWII she got dressed up in canvass overalls, gloves, and helmet, then crawled all over Liberty ships. When news came that her brother was MIA (ship sunk in the Pacific), she still went to work. When she found guys below decks playing cards, she tack welded the hatch shut to seal them in. She then went to her boss and said that maybe if they couldn’t do their jobs that maybe they could be somewhere on the front with a rifle.

    So SCREW YOU, Trump.

    The link has a photo of her #dressedlikeawoman

    No shit, CNN. Where were you during the election cycle? And I hope you plan to up that word confusion, because we’re already well beyond that.

    • February 5, 2017 at 12:32 am

      Your question is spot-on, J’OB! During the campaign, CNN, along with the rest of the US media, had ample time to educate the American People about Trump’s idiotic and incoherent Foreign Policy pronouncements. Instead, CNN–S along with the rest of the mainstream media–was more interested Hillary’s e-mails and in enabling right wing propaganda that Hillary was so corrupt that he was about to be indicted.

    YES WE DID!!

    John Quincy Adams was defeated for reelection in 1828 by Andrew Jackson, who proceeded to win reelection in 1832, and whose fellow Democrat, Martin Van Buren, won in 1836. It seemed to cement for all time the defeat of Adams’s vision of an active federal government that would invest in education and infrastructure, and the triumph of the Southern vision of slavery and weak central authority. “I fell, and with me fell, I fear never to rise again the system of internal improvement by national means and national energies,” he wrote in 1837, according to Louisa Thomas, and mourned that the defeats would “rivet into perpetuity the clanking chain of the slave.”

    Long-term pessimism about the liberal project has come roaring back in style since the election. Barack Obama’s pet line, “the moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice,” has been hauled out for a great deal of public mockery on all sides. The liberal coastal elite has wallowed in self-flagellation about their failure to understand the great country, a sentiment Donald Trump’s henchmen have exploited to cast the news media as an alien appendage from the real America and its deep, mystical bond with the new president. (“They don’t understand this country,” claims Steve Bannon, “They still do not understand why Donald Trump is the president of the United States.”)

    But the events of the last two weeks, both of which have seen massive nationwide protests against the new presidency, suggest a different conclusion. It is Trump who does not understand this country. And it is Obama’s vision of the country that will ultimately win out.

      we here could have told the author this ….,

      …. because we know that those who have come at PBO have ALL lost in the end;

      … it may take time but the ending outcome has always been the same:

      => a win for a “skinny kid with a funny name” who never lost his trust in the fundamental goodness of people;

      PBO told us to keep our focus and work for democracy if we want it …

      ….. yes, even when all of us were loosing our minds

      …. PBO kept calm and steady with Eyes Focused Firmly on The Prize

      • February 4, 2017 at 11:33 pm

        Couple interesting things to share before I turn in: First one goes along with this tweet–Moulton’s Town Hall. Our congressman, Jimmy Duncan (took seat from his father; has had it since 1988!!!!) is “running” from us and he is being skewered mightily for it. He wrote this long letter to one of the constituents, called us kooks and extremists among other things. It’s been all over Facebook. There’s now a Call to Action event at his office for late Friday afternoon (when he SHOULD be here). The event is called Kookfest. 🙂 He is flat out refusing to meet with any of us. Also, someone here found a fake news article that one of his supporters wrote and put in one of the small publications. Instructions for us to label it as fake news was posted and many of us have done that. 🙂 They are all SO getting a taste of their own medicine. Love it.

        Second, a young woman did a Facebook post late afternoon on the Women’s March-Knoxville page. She was simply asking for Facebook friends or ‘real life’ friends of like-mind here in the area. Asked for anyone interested to respond. In less than an hour, there was 68 comments. Few minutes ago, that was up to 170+. People are friending others, discovering they/we are close neighbors or just saw where two young women discovered they are graduates of ETSU, same year, both in education and both teachers here in Knoxville area. There’s meetups planned, play dates planned, etc.

        As I saw below, O’s America Rises Again. The two things I just shared are examples of that. We are connecting and learning and growing and getting “stronger together.”

        Good night all. Traveling tomorrow for a funeral in northeast TN. Will lurk as I can.

      From the site:

      We knew it might take five or ten or twenty years, yet gradually an authoritarian state arose within the democratic state, and a nucleus of fanatical devotion and ruthless determination formed in a wretched world that lacked basic convictions. Only one danger could have jeopardized this development … if they had from the first day annihilated with the utmost brutality the nucleus of our new movement.” — Adolf Hitler, Die Reden Hitlers am Reichsparteitag (1934 Nazi book containing all the speeches delivered by Hitler at Nuremberg).

    For the first time since Donald John Trump Jr. won the Electoral College to become President I’m starting to believe that his position as President is not tenable. A big part of why I believe this is because of the #Resistance movement. Trump is being shouted down from every corner of America, and the world for that matter. A President cannot govern by edict alone; in due time most if not all of his Executive Orders will fail him. And he is already in violation of the constitution; I wouldn’t be surprised if in some circles within the Republican Party’s hierarchy Trump’s exit is being put in place. The pressure that’s being exerted on Trump will be his undoing.

      I think what you said here is very true. Since they all think they work for the donors that give them the big$$$, and care diddly squat about the people, their actual constituents, they are probably all beside themselves right now…DT is a sinking ship and they are all already in the CYA mode…and running from the very people that put them in office. We need to amp up the pressure day by day, week by week, month by month….even if people don’t participate in the Resistance, it will be impossible to ignore what is happening before their eyes. The truth WILL come out, and it’s up to all of us to DEMAND that it does! This is OUR country. No one is above the law. Even the installed potus. People are finding their voices, speaking up and speaking out and it is a beautiful thing to see…I keep thinking to myself that maybe America HAD to get to this point, HAD to have someone like DT show us that we could demand more and hold our govt. accountable to us. We the people. If Hillary had become POTUS, we would have been relieved and happy, but we would have gotten complacent and just taken everything for granted…maybe not us, but most people would have because they weren’t that engaged anyway. But now, as horrifying and scary as it is…eyes are opening and minds are opening and people are seeing they have been lied to, and they are seeing what can happen when you don’t participate and tend to the work of democracy. We’re not going back. RESIST!

    • February 5, 2017 at 9:34 am

      You know, a couple of years ago I had the folly of thinking that Democrats would be in the driver’s seat for a generation. Republicans had demonstrated time and again they did not care about the health and welfare of Americans and did insane things like refuse to raise the debt limit, obstruct jobs and veteran’s benefits, shut down the government and on and on. They seemed to me to have a very shallow, very ugly bench. PBO was a STAR and surely the majority of Americans would vote for the Democratic Party for the foreseeable future. I thought we could do better and would win at least the next couple of cycles because surely the people would see through all the grotesque GOP racist flim flam. And I thought we would field a candidate that would be embraced by the next generation. Then all hell broke loose.

      The universe conspired to bring us HRC vs DT. I will never understand how this match-up came about after the phenomenal achievements of PBO and his incredible admin. All I can say is I’m very disturbed about the future. I know many people were begging for DT to win the primaries because they thought he would never win. I remember cautioning against that because we’d lived through seeing people vote for two terms of W and Schwarzenegger, both complete idiots who trashed our government and left us with a nightmare to fix and yet won their reelections without so much as a whimper.

      I agree that there seems to be no other path for DT than to self-destruct. He has no impulse control, he is repulsive in every way imaginable, his “ideas” are horrifying to the majority of the world and he is a con artist anyone with a brain can see coming a mile away. His flagrant display of arrogance and flaunting both norms and the law are intolerable. His fragile ego and psychological state will crush him eventually. Just not sure how long we can wait. Every day feels like we’re in a very calculated and grueling psy op.

        February 5, 2017 at 10:01 am

        Well…I agree with everything but the 2nd paragraph:) I hope that you’re wrong and that I’m right. I think that the demographics of the US is changing…more multicultural, multiracial, multi-everything…and that is good. This train has left the station, no turning that back…we WILL be a nation that is minority/majority before you know it …and THAT is what I believe is the driver of all this hatefulness and divisiveness…and the closing of doors to minorities and making things much more difficult for them….Democrats, especially PBO, were very inclusive and welcoming…respecting all that would come here and obey the laws and add to the fabric of the country. Republicans, are TERRIFIED of the mere thought of this, and have done ( for decades) anything and everything in their power to put up roadblocks and throw wrenches into the machinery of govt. to make life more and more difficult for POC and basically all those that didn’t think, worship, or tow their line. I think that the children and young adults that will be voting soon…are paying attention now. I work in an elementary school. Sixth grade is the highest grade in my school before they go off to middle school. Trust me! THEY TALK. THEY KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON! I just listen to the conversations they have amongst themselves…I don’t interject. These are 12 year olds…they will vote in 6 more years. They get it. And this is only MY little piece of the world…in other schools in the metro area that are more Hispanic….what do you think THEY see? They will be active and engaged because they have so much to lose if they don’t. We just got rid of Joe Arpiao…and got an inclusive, smart Democratic sheriff that will do outreach with the kids in their neighborhoods….talk to them and try to repair the damage and mistrust that decades of an abomination of a sheriff, has done to families, neighborhoods and the entire law enforcement system in the 5th largest city in America.

        I see hope in our children…they are more inclusive and open by their very nature. Whatever you may be, no matter the color of your shin, the religion you practice or don’t practice, no matter if you play with dolls or trucks, have a disability or not…they open their arms and hearts because they just see another child. I see this every day. They will save us from ourselves:)

        Keep hope.

        • February 5, 2017 at 10:17 am

          I totally have hope for the future given all the same things you describe. I’m primarily talking about how we get through the here and now. I cannot imagine another month, another year of this insanity. Believe me, I get the demographics (I’m a Latina in California) and the open mindedness of young people. I see it, too. And that is a tremendous hope for progress in the future. But we need to deal with what is happening to us today and how we get this insane madman out of office and what comes next. Pence and Ryan are no better, they are destroyers. It’s beyond depressing.

          • February 5, 2017 at 10:19 am

              I’m a pretty stubborn person. I don’t give up on my principles and I admire others who live their values. My hope is that as soon as the onslaught of shock & awe wear off, a LOT of people in this country will wake up and see that we are in very deep trouble. I just hope it doesn’t take a confrontation with China, North Korea or Iran.

                I hear you. It wakes me up in the night. I didn’t mean to suggest that I WASN’T concerned, I just try to channel my energy to the constructive…I find that I call or write to my reps nearly every week now….that’s constructive to me and I’ve gotten to say my piece. I called out my senators for having full voicemails for days…if I can’t get through to their offices, for DAYS, then they are not going to hear what I have to say in a timely fashion. Unsat.

                I just keep hoping that those countries are laughing and taking into account that its the ignorant crazy ass….and this too shall pass.They probably have whiplash going from PBO to this one…and thinking WTF is going ON OVER THERE!???

  22. February 5, 2017 at 8:28 am

    Figured something like this would happen soon…#PresidentBannon With the constant poking, expect a twitter tirade to be coming soon; may even turn on Bannon?????

    Bannon’s rising profile — captured on this week’s cover of Time magazine, which labeled him “The Great Manipulator” — caught the attention of senior officials, as well as Trump, who takes pride in his own cover appearances and inquired about Bannon’s Time debut with aides.

  25. 78 carolyn
    February 5, 2017 at 9:01 am

    With regard to the court appeals and rulings…..I think that many people never understood what “rule of law” not “rule of men” meant. I KNOW Trump did/does not. We are seeing this illustrated now clearly. I firmly believe Trump thought all he had to do if elected was wave a magic wand, sign a few papers and he could dictate for the country what he wanted to happen. We KNOW he has no idea how legislation happens, and that legislation has a longer and more lasting effect than executive orders. His flunkies keep him in the dark as to the true functioning of the three branches of government. He thinks that by tweeting some insults, he can change laws and make things to his liking.

    I see all of this as a giant civics lesson for the country. Many are kicking and screaming at it, others are invigorated and renewed.

    And yes…..as df and I agree, Trump is functionally illiterate.

    please remember and take time to emphasize this whenever you can:

    the homegrown demagogue is not acting alone;

    he is being actively enabled by republicans who not only support his policies but have remained silent in the face obvious corruption and abuse of the basic tenets of democracy and humanity;

    if we are going to protect human rights and save democracy here at home, while giving a boost to other people striving for democracy around the world, we have to make sure that in the mind of each person (especially potential voters) trump and republicans are one and the same;

    I feel that one of our shortcomings in elections has been a failure to tightly link the other elected republicans to this trump mess;

    we have to strengthen this linkage if we are going to protect our democracy from the bottom up and through each level of elected office;

    turn into gop, republicans into a toxic and shameful political brand that no self-respecting human and voter will want to be associated with;

    • 83 globalcitizenlinda
      February 5, 2017 at 9:20 am

      mission for all people seeking progress, diversity, equality, human rights etc.: “make the gop/republican political brand toxic”;

      so that when people ask: what do you think of when they say gop/republicans, the answer could be:

      – racist;

      – xenophobia;

      – misogyny;

      The cover of Time magazine must be making 45 crazy. I hope more news outlets continue to push the narrative of 45 as Bannon and Putin’s puppet.
      As was mentioned earlier, we must include the republicans in all of the pushback; it is because of their failure in leadership, from the RNC to those in congress, that we have a country that is descending to 3rd world status.
      45 lied on Kuwait when he said that they had imposed a Muslim ban and they called him on it.
      The illegitimate cabal said that they will “try to do better.”; what this means is that they will plug the leaks and find even more back door ways to get what they want. This is like your ex who abused you who says ” just give me another chance, it will not happen again.” even as you are still re-covering from the last battering. F**k them and let’s keep it moving; every act, large and small, is a step closer to freedom.

    I learned another thing from the demonstrators this week – what the acronym ITMFA now stands for;

    for those who may have tried to scratch your heads when you saw this on some protest signs, I got to learn that it stands (reader discretion advised here for language);

    ITMFA = Impeach The Motherfucker Already;

    someone needs to let us know but I get the feeling that no president in my lifetime has been referred to with all manner of cuss words to replace his name ….

      Interesting read but I still like Barack more, not that I don’t dislike Gorsuch, it just seems like Gorsuch would drown a puppy if given the chance.

    From Kristen Tea:
    “I want my friends to understand that “staying out of politics” or being “sick of politics” is privilege in action. Your privilege allows you to live a non-political existence. Your wealth, your race, your abilities or your gender allows you to live a life in which you likely will not be a target of bigotry, attacks, deportation, or genocide. You don’t want to get political, you don’t want to fight because your life and safety are not at stake.

    It is hard and exhausting to bring up issues of oppression (aka “get political”). The fighting is tiring. I get it. Self-care is essential. But if you find politics annoying and you just want everyone to be nice, please know that people are literally fighting for their lives and safety. You might not see it, but that’s what privilege does.

    I also want to say to my friends who are new to this, my friends who have recently become more vocal, my friends who’ve seen the damage Trumplestiltskin has done so far, my friends who went to the women’s march — I am proud of you for getting involved. Don’t stop there. Keep having these discussions, keep talking about politics, stay active.

    And when you read the critiques of the march from other progressive women who didn’t feel represented, don’t get defensive or discouraged. Activism needs critique. We need to ask ourselves where we were as Flint’s water has been poisoned, or where we were when Philando Castile was killed, or John Crawford or Eric Garner. If the women who showed up at the march showed up when people of color were murdered, it would stop.

    Intersectionality means showing up even when the issues don’t affect us directly. Stay awake and stay active. We need you so much right now.”

      As a POC who has watched all of this recent activism with a side-eye, I am glad to see this and I hope more privileged people have their eyes opened as the days and weeks go by. Many A-A people, who showed up overwhelmingly in the last election, are afraid that we will be left out as the DNC goes all out to convince reluctant whites to vote democratic. As much as I love Uncle Joe, some of his comments near the end showed a certain out of touch viewpoint. I am even a bit wary of the term and the concept of “intersectionality” in the marches because at the end of that is how do we get more diverse people in the marches and protests to give cover to white liberals, many of whom did not vote or voted for a 3rd party. We see all of this and wonder where were all of these people as we were being shot on the street, harassed by the police, subjected to voter suppression, not given space and time to mourn our dead (always asking A-A families to forgive the whites who have killed their children), and criticized when we try to make people realize that “Black Lives Matter.” So while I am pleased that there is some pushback against a government that can hurt us all, I do not have a complete buy-in yet because I am waiting to see if A-A people will be used and betrayed again as has happened in each epoch of our country’s history.

    Did you see?

    The United States Department of Agriculture shut down an online database Friday that included information about animals mistreated, injured and killed.

    The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) cited privacy concerns in removing the documents, but one animal welfare activist said he believes the department is caving to pressure from groups that didn’t like the information being so easily accessible.

    For more than a decade the USDA’s website posted official warnings, settlements made before trial, administrative complaints, inspection reports and research facility annual reports.

    “APHIS, during the past year, has conducted a comprehensive review of the information it posts on its website for the general public to view,” the announcement reads. “As a result of the comprehensive review, APHIS has implemented actions to remove certain personal information from documents it posts on APHIS’ website involving the Horse Protection Act and the Animal Welfare Act.”

    Michael Budkie, the executive director of Stop Animal Exploitation NOW!, said the information removed already had redacted sections.

    “The documents that they have removed contain virtually no personal information. This is NOT about privacy,” Budkie said. “Our entire society is going online now. Whether it’s shopping, communicating or banking. What is our government doing? They are going off-line.”

      Yes I saw it – it didn’t get a lot of notice, but folks are starting to pay attention. It is sick and makes zero sense to me.

      Music and poetry are often my go to places to help me to deal with a variety of emotions. Lately, music from Les Miserables ” Do you Hear the People Sing?” and from the Hamilton Mixtape :”Immigrants (We Get the Job Done).”
      My heart was so full and I wept with pride and sorrow when I saw the demonstration of the Yemeni store owners and others. They knelled on the street in prayer while supporters ringed them in protection and solidarity. It was painful and beautiful, like so much of the story of our country.

    Since I am not interested in football, instead I will watch PBO’s Farewell Address. Many of his words have taken on even more meaning in view of the almost world-wide pushback against the illegal cabal in the white house.
