Me, too! In DC but staying away from downtown until tomorrow. Saw a handsome older African American man in a pink pussyhat knitted by his wife. We talked about how hard today is and how fiercely we will miss the Obamas. Wish I had a photo of us!

I have never seen something like “#ThanksObama” or “TimeForAVacation” coming from an official military public affairs office. LOVE IT. Pretty sure ANY military member who came in contact with the Obamas loved them.

They know who has loved and supported them and kept them safe by the decisions he made and by his personal acts toward them. I have never seen an outgoing president receive such accolades from all kinds of people through every medium as we have seen showered upon PBO. He more than deserves all of it, but I wish more people had joined him in the fray.

I have very sad news from our O’friend CanadaBarb. Barb asked me to “let the blog know” that her dear husband Arne passed away last evening. From all accounts and a little of my own personal experience with the family, he was the salt of the earth, compassionate and empathetic, a great husband and father and friend, much loved by Barb and their son Thomas.

Barb related that around the time of the election, Arne had started to suffer back pains, which eventually led him weeks later to a trip to the E.R. and a diagnosis of cancer in several organs. Everything went quickly after that. The reason I mention the election here, also at Barb’s request, is because Arne was – like so many in our country, Canada, and beyond – very saddened by the results. Took him days to come out of his initial shock. I know she’d told me at the time that she thought his physical back pains were somehow related (before they had the eventual diagnosis). In any event, last evening – keep in mind the date was Jan. 19 – after he passed, Barb told their son that she truly thought he didn’t want to be around to watch the events unfold today. This is the part that gets me – her son responded to her, “It was HIS protest.”

Now, whether we all believe in “signs” or not, Barb is comforted by that, as am I for them, and I hope along with your good thoughts and prayers for Barb and her extended family, you’ll join me in the comfort. Rest in peace, Arne. You were loved.

There is a Ghanaian proverb that I’ve become very fond of over the years: “The ruin of a nation begins in the homes of its people.” In the days leading up to Donald Trump’s inauguration to the highest office of one of the most powerful nations in the world, I’ve been turning this proverb around in my mind over and over again. The post-election day shock that has been echoing in the chambers of my life, my work, my social media circles has been telling. Something deeply private, like the filth in our homes, has been made public, and the shock, particularly among the white, liberal, educated classes – those most likely to survive when the house burns down – is revealing. Either many Americans did not know that the house was in disarray, or they knew but hoped that the disorder wouldn’t get out, be seen, like laundry shoved into a spare cupboard before the guests arrive. Here we are now, our dirty laundry visible and stinking and everywhere.

So true. That this travesty nay force the country to deal with its major unfinished business of dealing with the reality of genocide and slavery and their aftermaths, is the only good thing about it. The republican congress better dust off their obstruction tactics because DT has already shown that he is not their man and that he will throw them under the bus. Time to get out the popcorn.

How America’s anti-elitism might be creating a whiter White House
    By Tracy Jan
    January 20 at 11:15 AM

As his Cabinet nominees were grilled by the Senate on the eve of his inauguration, President-elect Donald Trump declared that “We have by far the highest IQ of any Cabinet ever assembled!”

It’s a grandiose assertion, one that’s impossible to know. But by another metric, Trump’s nominees fall short: academic degrees.

As a whole, Trump’s picks to lead the nation’s government agencies have fewer advanced degrees than any first-term Cabinet in at least 24 years.

A third of the nominees in Trump’s 15-member executive team hold only a bachelor’s degree. A quarter obtained up to a master’s degree, and 40 percent achieved a law or medical degree. No one has a doctorate. Compare that to President Obama’s original Cabinet, which conservatives derided for being stacked with intellectual elites: Only two members held a bachelor’s degree alone. A third stopped their educations at a master’s degree, and more than half held doctorates, medical or law degrees — often from the nation’s most prestigious universities.

Trump’s Cabinet also happens to be the wealthiest in modern history — illustrating how it’s possible for some to reach the top without racking up college degrees. That level of success without years of advanced education is nearly impossible for black and brown Americans, say sociologists, economists and political scientists who study the link between race, education and achievement.

“Rarely will we find an example of an uncredentialed black person in an elite position,” said Darrick Hamilton, an economist at The New School in New York. “That black person is usually certainly qualified, if not overqualified, with regard to their education.”

“As higher education has become more accessible to more diverse groups of people, the general population has become more distrustful of education and expertise,” said Tressie McMillan Cottom, a sociologist at Virginia Commonwealth University. “They think there must be something suspect about education, because how great can Harvard really be if someone like Barack Obama got there?”

“In this country, diversity has gotten tied up in the idea of a liberal academy,” she said. “The election of Trump is a critique and rebuke of that.”

    GM/GA TODville.

Saw MightPamela’s question about @POTUS44 (he’s still PBO forever) re: Andrew’s AFB farewell, which has concluded.

I saw a split-screen version on CBS news online, and he declared: “This is not a period, it’s a comma.”

And though PBO and First Family no doubt were hoping for a typical winter getaway in the desert, it will probably be raining when they arrive.

When they step off the familiar AF1 (I know, the aviation call letters have changed, but I think they’re boarding the familiar plane that taken PBO to so many wonderful places these past 8 years), they’ll feel like they’ve never left DC — it’s 49F where I am (at the leading edge of the storm, where it’s been raining since early AM), and the forecast high is in the mid-50s.

But if they stay where the Daily Mail speculated they would, they’re in for a treat:

I am exhausted, but so happy to get through this day with the TOD ohana. My heart clutched when I heard to him being called former president. My mom said there were no claps and cheers, just a grim crowd and what sounded much like a slightly dressed up version of his campaign rally comments. It is obvious that no one has told him what is in the climate agreement (for damn sure he has not read it). It is four years before any signatory can pull out of it. This so-called speech was an ungracious (everything is awful and I am going to fix it) xenophobic, unrealistic mess. In other words the usual that you get from him.
Well, the sun is still shining, the world is still turning, and our new employee is only a temp. Looking forward to the women’s marches tomorrow when we will see the best of America showcased.
