You know what I love? I love that PBO not only loves science but respects its findings and foundations. I will miss that. We will be worse off for having the tiny fingered no nothing. He is not intellectually curious. At all. Not a role model. In the mean time….this reminds me:)

Congrats to the first place twins and to NASA for being awesome. Saw Hidden Figures this weekend after buying another set of John Lewis’ March graphic novels. Huge Portland Save our ACA healthcare rally with both of our Senators, three of our Reps, and numerous state officials. Packed room and overflow in the parking lot stomped and yelled for over an hour. Four of us OFA leaders on the stage with the leaders for the livestream & speeches. OFA is gathering steam and new recruits by the day. President Obama needs us now and forever!

    Mass Media BLACK-OUT January 20, 2017

Let’s avoid ALL MASS MEDIA! Folks have suggested just avoiding the coverage of the clownstick inauguration, but let’s send a louder message of resistance! C’Mon there’s 65+ million of us that are sickened by that jackass and the thought of him as the face of our great country.

It’s just ONE DAY and we’ll all suffer the humiliating and disgusting reality for a long time to come.
    • Get in the car and take a day trip!
    • Stream movies!
    • Enjoy a hobby!
    • H*ll anything fun and harmless!

    SHARE and pass the word!

I’m with you! My friend and I are going to see a movie. Another friend said her book club is meeting that day. At the last meeting they were talking about how excited they were in ’08 and ’12, all smiles and pride and happy tears. They decided (since they are meeting on Friday) that they will all dress in black and not watch or mention the dreadful event, but just stick to the book. It feels like a moment of doom to me and every time I read something that says “This will be President Obama’s last….something-or-other” a cold hand squeezes my heart. I just cannot force my brain to accept this reality. I think for the next four years I will just want President Obama’s speeches, read articles about his travels, and watch all the darling videos. This is still truly unthinkable.

Yes. I’m participating in the mass media blackout and will #GoSilent completely – all electronic devices off, no purchases, no driving or use of public transportation). I wanted to know if TOD will be posting on Jan 21st so I can see pictures of POTUS, FLOTUS, VPOTUS, Dr. Biden and their families from Jan 20. Thank you

Make sure you have your TV ON – on any station NOT airing anything to do with the inauguration. OFF TVs aren’t counted…. as in – if you’re home, and watching TV – it COUNTS – so if the TV is ON, and it’s NOT ON TRUMP…. that’s how it will be counted (ratings are weird – but trust me…)

Just started watching my tape of 60 Minutes. Heard PBO say the first thing he was going to do was NOT set his alarm clock. That is exactly my favorite thing about retirement too. On my recent twenty day trip to Europe there were a couple days when there was no need to worry about getting up early so I did not set my alarm clock so I could just wake up naturally. However I was rooming with my Sister-in-Law and I found out she always sets her alarm clock even though she is retired too. I had no idea that anyone that had no reason would set their alarm clock to get up early.

    • January 15, 2017 at 11:12 pm

My favorite thing also. I even schedule my appointments between 10 am (avoid getting up early) and 2 pm (avoid traffic jams). Hardest thing since the fire are the days I need to get up early to meet with the restoration crew…

      • January 15, 2017 at 11:34 pm

I’m the same way – love getting up naturally. But I have to watch when I go to sleep – too late and I’ll sleep until noon! I have been taking a melatonin pill every night and I did buy a Phillips natural wake up clock. It starts to turn up the light very gradually starting half an hour before the time the alarm is set. It doesn’t even feel like an alarm to me and I could never have used it while teaching. I need a couple of really obnoxious and loud alarms to get me up then!

    My Pact with Myself

No longer do I feel I need to be
    In Denial
    To get through this time.

    Our President set the tone
    Many years ago
For us to maintain our strength
    And go the extra mile

We got this. Yes We Can.
Yes We Did. Yes We Can.

    There’s no way anyone
Can take Barack Obama away from us
    Can’t erase his memory
Can’t erase the patriotism he alone

    Wasn’t it wonderful
    That we all came together
    To elect him
    And stuck together
    All these years.

    I won’t be
    In Denial
    about that.
    We don’t need documentaries
    On the History channel
to remember all he taught us.

    We don’t need historians
to tell us what it meant
for him to walk among us.

The age of Obama was ours!

I’m holding him in my heart
    And holding on.

    God bless his future journey!

I’m growing tired of every last bozo and his brother telling us about the legacy of President Barack Hussein Obama.
I don’t need any of them to tell me what he stood for, what he got accomplished, all that he meant to so very many, what I just witnessed.
I really don’t need it. Over these last 10 years, I stopped listening to what the pundits and hangers-on and profiteers had to say about his every move or word or thought. I didn’t care then and I don’t care now. Because what he means to the chattering class has absolutely nothing to do with what he means to us. He inspired us to think, to feel, to act. That is plenty enough for me.

      • 59 Obama Grandmama
        January 16, 2017 at 11:14 am

I was even annoyed when the pundits use the terminology “legacy” as if that in itself is all Obama cares about, going down in the history books. They missed the point with him since his motives are and have always been helping the people. He could care less if he gets the credit for it and has said so many times. That is very different from most people’s thinking so it just does not register with the pundits, the GOP, or most of those used to wanting physical rewards for themselves for their actions.
I had planned to retire the photos of Obama and family from the living area to my art room upon the end of his last term, plus put away the special hope candle I bought when he was first elected. Now I realize I need hope more now than ever and seeing his family’s faces will remind me there are people out there that care and are genuinely concerned about our safety, health and our Democracy. They will stay where they are not be moved.

Saw the movie Fences today as part of date night with my husband. What an incredible movie. We loved it. We want to see Hidden Figures too. I wish I could have seen it with you GGail, JoJocat and PurpleshoesLA when you all went.

    • January 16, 2017 at 3:42 am

Hidden Figures is my vote for Best Film right now. Still on this list in the next two weeks: Fences, LA LA Land (I’m having a problem with this and I haven’t even seen it yet…. but I’m just not ready for yet another Birdman or The Artist…. a film that has a “hook” that everyone goes insane over and ignores better films without some shiny “hook.”), Jackie, Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, The Girl on the Train, Florence Foster Jenkins, Lion, Lady Day, and Captain Fantastic. I’m not getting Hell or High Water, or Hacksaw ridge. 😦

See: The OA, Stranger Things, and The Crown on Netflix, and Man in the High Castle on Amazon. (Oh, I loved Arrival.)

      • January 16, 2017 at 6:57 am

Since Thursday, I’ve seen LA LA Land, Hidden Figures and Jackie. Fences will be next.

How to Destroy America From Within 101.

Is Manafort the Putin/Trump go between? Because it certainly looks as though it’s a systematic way to take down the Government – but taking down every government department we have.

Plus Tillerson only wants to life the sanctions so that Exxon can get in to Russia’s oil because they’re set to make TRILLIONS if that happens.

Reading this the line from a Hamilton song, “I wrote my way out,” kept playing over and over in the background of my thoughts. As a former Language Arts teacher and life-long bibliophile, I just love, love, love that out president has such a great love for writing and reading. I kept a photo that showed a close-up of his hand as he was editing a speech on the wall in my classroom to be an example to my students. PBO is truly a man for all seasons. Ignorant people have always hated and tried to destroy those who are intellectually gifted because they feel inferior; they try to destroy smart people because they know that they cannot be fooled by their tricks and lies and may be able to help others to do so as well. A entire generation was taught that the one thing that he racists could not take from us was what we knew. Even though most of our parents did not get beyond a high school education, they encouraged us and made it possible for us to go to college/university and to successful while we were there. While in some ways it felt unfair, we knew that we were carrying the weight of the hope and dreams of our families, churches, and neighborhoods. We were serious students who fulfilled their dreams and ours. My class produced, Doctors, Pharmacists, Dentists, social workers, teachers, business people, and elected officials. Most of us came from large families (6 kids in mine) and lived in 3 bedroom homes that had one small bathroom. We did homework on the kitchen table seen over by parents who often tested us on what we did (my mother was strict). I grew up with many people who had gifts like those of PBO and MO, indeed, I am one of them. PBO has given so many of us, from many walks of life, an example that we can use to encourage the young people around us. I have faith in them just as PBO does. What begins this week is not something that will have the type of long-lasting influence that which came before.

Good Monday MLK morning TOD: I want to share this with you, as I believe it is an excellent suggestion, via AJ, a commenter over at The People’s View:

We should tweet Tom Perez as soon as he becomes DNC chair… no more allowing non-Dems to register as Dem just to run for POTUS. Slanders is still showing as Independent in the Senate and should be disqualified. The rule should be 5 years and full support for the Dem agenda, no changing it to a socialist one.

I would add that whoever becomes DNC Chair should be pushed on this- 5 years as a Registered Democrat and full support for the dem agenda, to run for POTUS as a Democrat.

Also an excellent opinion piece at The People’s View this morning (from yesterday): http://www.thepeoplesview.net/main/2017/1/15/to-my-friend-a-trump-voter

Good read, sherijr:) Let me add this to the mix.

At the end of this week, we will be saying goodbye to the classiest, most down-to-earth president we have had in many years. President Obama and his family are the first First Family since the Camelot years of the early 1960s to make us proud of our choice in leadership. In eight years, there hasn’t been a single scandal and at no time has the President of the United States embarrassed us. Compared to his predecessor, it was like a breath of fresh air wafted through the government and we got a level of competence that was reminiscent of how most presidents used to be, at least since the Great Depression.

Now, on Friday at noon, we are handing the keys of the White House to a fake billionaire who not only hasn’t been vetted, but who has shown himself to be the most childish and petulant politician to ever occupy the corridors of power in this country. He has been accused of siding with the Russian dictator over the United States and he has often sided with Vladimir Putin over the actual patriots who put their lives on the line to get us the intelligence we need to keep our country safe. Donny cannot handle anyone saying anything negative about him and he can’t let anything bounce off him without responding. According to most accounts, he hates computers (“the cyber”), but he has discovered Twitter and cannot allow any slight against him to go without a response. He has embarrassed the United States repeatedly and he hasn’t even taken office yet. He’s a dumbass to the highest order and everyone who supported him, whether they voted for him, or they supported him by not voting for Hillary Clinton, is also a dumbass of the highest order. And yes, that means you, hardcore “Bernie or Busters” or belligerent Third Party voters. You’re just as responsible.

                • January 16, 2017 at 9:21 am

df, I hate to add to your stress but I really am terrified. We see by his response to the IC that he shreds anyone who tells him anything he doesn’t want to hear. He will surround himself with his children and only sycophants because he is incapable of critical thinking and has an extremely fragile ego. So there will be no one who will hold him accountable for anything, not Congress, not half the country, especially not the press.

My first degree is in psychology with an emphasis in cognitive science and natural language processing, so I’ve studied a lot about cognition. Trump cannot process information in any orderly way. He has no facility with how to build a logical argument that doesn’t appeal to base instincts. He doesn’t know what it means to process complex information or express himself coherently. He does not listen to anyone. He’s arrogant beyond measure. The interview that came out yesterday in IK Times is horrifying on its own. He is emotionally explosive. We are in serious, serious danger.

I wish I knew what would be most effective. Watching PBO on 60 Minutes last night talk about how utterly demanding the work is, how it takes a real toll on your stamina, how consuming it is, heightened my fears.

Trump will soon be literally awash in work, reading, information and problems. He will obviously be overwhelmed in a way that we cannot fathom. How he deals with that is going to be very apparent very soon, especially since he’s surrounding himself with self-absorbed flunkees. We are going to need to figure out how to ratchet up the resistance real soon.

This is an article written in early 2016..while the primaries were still raging…work a read about Trump voters…

    from the article…

One of the great tragedies in contemporary American political life is how white working-class voters routinely support political candidates and policies that do not improve their lives, but instead contribute to their immiseration. When the denizens of Red State America look around, they see communities with high levels of illegal drug use, pain pill addiction, unemployment, domestic violence, a breakdown in “family values,” and gun violence. Right-wing America’s opinion leaders routinely use language such as “makers” and “takers” as a way to slur black and brown residents in “the ghetto” or “inner city.” In reality, Red State America consumes more public resources than other parts of the country. There are more poor white people than any other group. And rural white poverty is one of the great hidden shames of the nation

in the meantime these are the voters that the DNC wants to engage…but you cannot engage these voters unless you deal without engaging in the issue of racism and white privilege….

which the DEMs seem to have a hard time doing…if this had been addressed early in the President’s term…the results of 2010 may have been different….

i remember Bob…saying many times that white people had to lead the way with Truth and Reconciliation…perhaps we need a Camp Obama for Truth and Reconciliation…

The MSN newsfeed is at it again. According to their headline Black people were the only ones offended by the Deplorable One’s tweet about Rep. John Lewis, failed to mention or show any of the tweeted photos that residents of Rep. Lewis’ district sent out that gave the lie to DO’s characterization, and referred to him as” Mr. Lewis” rather than Rep. John Lewis. No mention was made of the support of Minority Leader Nancy Peloisi or others. Uniformed readers, especially White ones, will come away with thinking that this situation is not as important and wide-spread as it is.

Oppressed people are mostly just trying to survive. Whenever there has been a brief time and place of prosperity for a relatively small group, the backlash has been so great (think of the Black Townships in Tennessee and Florida that were destroy whites, the aftermath of reconstruction, and Jim Crow after Black soldiers who returned from WWI, etc) because they are so fearful that the oppressed will become the oppressors. White people have to talk to the only people that they respect; other white people to come to an understanding of the absolute need for truth and reconciliation if this country is to grow up and be a truly great nation. Black and brown people have marched, prayed, sung, voted, and yanked themselves up by their bootstraps to the highest office in the land and to the top of many professions, but we can still be disrespected on our own front porches (Dr. Louis Gates), our children killed as they play in parks or go to the store for candy, and our First Family called everything but what they are. As for DT, white people caused this problem and white people need to be the ones to solve it. Black and brown people are just trying to survive.

CEB if feel it deep down in my soul what you are saying, I know what you are saying. I can see it and taste it, and I cannot escape it because if you are an African American with a functioning brain you understand it. Donald Trump is a monster and America has elected him to be its next President. Donald Trump showed America what he is and what he stands for and America STILL elected him to be its next representative. America chose a bigoted, adulterous, liar to be its face around the world.

I really don’t believe that Donald Trump gives a fuck about black people, not unless of them can be of some service to him. How does one go about attacking Rep. John Lewis? Even someone that’s full of shit would have at least put out a bullshit self-serving statement apologizing to Rep. Lewis, but Trump couldn’t even do that. Not even those hat-in-hand Negroes that surround Trump could get Trump to apologize, who knows if they even tried to get him to apologize.

Elections have consequences…as we all know and understand!

When Kristin Hook, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Maryland, found out in early November that she would receive a raise of almost $4,000 the next month, she immediately increased her contributions to her retirement savings account. A week or two earlier, at Arizona State University’s Downtown Phoenix campus, social media coordinator Gordon Chaffin, who regularly puts in 45- to 50-hour weeks, learned from his employer that he would be eligible for overtime pay beginning December 1.

Neither Hook’s raise or Chaffin’s overtime eligibility happened. Instead, they became two of the estimated 4.2 million workers left in personal-finance limbo when a federal district judge in Texas issued a last-minute stay to the Obama administration’s initiative to overhaul the rules for overtime pay, which had led many employers to announce forthcoming changes to their workers’ compensation. After the ruling, Hook’s and Chaffin’s workplaces announced they would hold off on any changes initiated to bring them into compliance with the now-stalled regulation—a regulation that the Trump administration may be reluctant to defend.

These workers were promised they would receive raises or overtime pay. And then, a presidential upset and a judicial ruling later, that promised money was taken away. “The university should not renege on something they said they were going to do,” Hook told me.

We Dems, need to trumpet our accomplishments and our initiatives to the American people. We should own them and be proud. Of course, it would help if we actually had reporters and journalists that spoke with us and let the country know that, in fact, both parties are NOT THE SAME!

    “Where are my party-shoes?
I am not going to the inauguration.
    I am not going
    like John Lewis,
    Barbara Lee, Earl Blumenauer,
    Katherine Clark, Luis Gutiérrez.
Well, actually … I was not invited.
    I was not invited
    like liberty, tolerance, civility.
    Now, not going somewhere
    with John Lewis — that’s a party!
    I’ve been waiting for that
    since I was a child.
The next day is something else.
    I’m going to that party
    in Washington and all over
    the country,
    the party that’s hoping for,
    praying for, working for,
    protesting for —
    hope and justice,
    care for the most vulnerable,
    love for this country.
And not just the next day,
but this will be the longest, sweetest,
    most door-open party
    of them all.
    It’s going to last
every day of what’s coming …
and that’s what John Lewis taught me
    about action
    long ago and Friday.
I am polishing my party shoes–and fluffing up my knit pussy hat. See you at the real party!”
