42 years ago, TODAY, I stood in a windowless room, in a building at Broad and Cherry Streets, Philadelphia, as a United States Marine CORPS Recruit, raised my right hand and pledged an oath “To support and defend the United States of America, against all enemies, foreign and domestic…” You, dear trump voter are the latter…
History will reflect 151 years and 6 months, a mere 55,336 days, after the south was defeated in the Civil War, faux patriots across the land entered voting booths and surrendered America to the confederacy. This was done knowingly. The majority of white voters, male and female, prioritized privilege over continuing to strive to form “A More Perfect Union.”
Save the faux outrage for being called out. This was NOT the dog-whistle campaign of Lee Atwater and the boys, that propelled Reagan to the Presidency. No, the scab was ripped off the festering sore in this nation, gasoline was poured and trump struck the match, running a full on, in your face, kkk-endorsed, campaign of white supremacy. You can’t say that you didn’t know…
When he demonized Mexicans, you were okay with that…
And Muslims; and African Americans; and POW’s – still trying to wrap my mind around this one; and Women; and the Disabled; and the Military – this from someone that actively avoided military service. He demonized the whole Islamic Faith; and the Seventh Day Adventist faith; and Asians… Did I miss anybody? YOU.WERE.OKAY.WITH.ALL.OF.THIS.
Don’t quote for me the percentage of African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, etc. that voted for trump – there have always been self-loathing, “I’m not like them,” saboteurs in our midst. One thing that all marginalized people know: “All of my skin/interest folk, ain’t my kin folk.”
I intentionally didn’t mention our pathetic 4th Estate. Murrow, Cronkite, Bradley are all spinning like tops in their graves.
Having surrendered to the confederacy, you, my Stars and Stripes waving, red, white, and blue bunting decorating, patriotic t-shirt wearing, faux patriotic friend have forfeited two privileges that you hold dear; the privilege of declaring yourself a “real American” and that of proudly flying Old Glory.
Although the United States of America will continue to be the Land of the Free for another 68 days, after that, things change. You voted in the confederacy, so OWN IT! Retire the Stars and Stripes, and proudly hoist the Stars and Bars. We know who you are; you need no longer to hide behind the faux patriotism of old. The Stars and Bars are an adequate temporary place holder for your soon-to-be-designed national ensign.
Funny thing happened while you were drunk on the euphoria of establishing the new Confederate States of America: putin and the boys confirmed that they have been in engaged with the trump campaign from the beginning. trump openly courted the russians, called on them to hack the opposition, had russophiles embedded in his campaign; BUT.YOU.WERE.OKAY.WITH.ALL.OF.THAT.

Just wanted to let everyone know I have just called my two senators to urge them to have a backbone and not normalize this horror show. No Mr. nice guy, especially Booker. Also called the local office of my repub. congressman and focused on the medicare issue. He has a lot of seniors and urged him to break from Ryan and do the right thing. I doubt that will happen but we need to let our voices go on record. After a week of depression and crying, I am now in an angry frame of mind and will fight as best I can.

PF, it’s hard to realize how deeply this privilege is sunk into our bones. I thought I had a clue, turns out I had no clues. I learned my lesson a long time ago. I grew up in a Jewish neighborhood in Detroit. When I was around my friends (junior high, high school), I would hear them talking about anti-Semitism and I would think, but that’s all gone now. (Thank goodness I never said this out loud).I thought all that was done with after the war and that they were holding on to old grievances. Well. Before the start of my first semester at college, all the freshmen went up to spend one weekend getting used to the dorms and the campus and taking a few seminars. I was rooming with two girls, both strangers to me. One night they came home from a party they’d been at, talking about a Jewish guy that had been there and spouting the most disgusting, vile, anti-Semitic garbage I had ever heard and laughing hysterically. So it turned out that my Jewish friends actually knew more about being Jewish than I did! I have tried never again to put my experience of life above someone whose life I have not lived! And I still have to fight against the urge to say, “Oh it can’t really be like that!”. And that’s because I don’t want it to be like that! I don’t want people to have to suffer and I don’t want to believe that there are still people that hateful in our country. My automatic defense mechanism kicks in. I. Don’t.Want.To.Believe. However, once your eyes are opened it’s hard to stay ignorant and I believe I am better at keeping my eyes open than some others. I am still capable of being shocked to the core by the things I now see and hear happening, but I do not deny them. We cannot move ahead while in denial even though it hurts and even though we have to accuse ourselves. This must sound incredibly naive and I apologize for my naivete. (I was in a mixed discussion group on race once and the white people were shocked! to hear a black man say that every time he entered a certain department store he was followed (this was a group of educators) and another man talk about driving while black. The instinctive first reaction of the white folks was, “Oh you must be mistaken, that can’t really be true”. These were not people who I would have identified as racists, pretty sure they were all Obama voters, and worked with colleagues of all backgrounds on a fairly equal basis, but the the white privilege they are soaked in allowed them to say to these intelligent and respected colleagues, in effect, ‘you must not have the ability to interpret your own lived experience because it has never happened to Me and I have never noticed it! Sorry, this is way too long!

Good morning TOD. Grief is a funny thing, after 2 days of doing better I slept very little last night. Tons of things roiling around in my head, a few of which I will leave here.
First, the GOP has been destroying this country since the days of Reagan and somehow we have failed to call them out on it. It has seen its most radical iteration during the Obama presidency.

They have regarded any Democratic president as illegitimate. They have proudly boasted of preventing popularly elected Democrats from effecting policy and have asserted that only Republicans have the right to determine the nation’s course. They have worked tirelessly to make sure that the government cannot govern and to redefine the purpose of government as prevention rather than effectuation. Second, although we all knew that there was a significant portion of the country that hated the change President Obama represented, we failed to recognize that perhaps the country needed some breathing room before moving on to more change. Jennifer Rubin, a never Trump conservative columnist notes:

Hillary Clinton did offer a jobs program, a debt free college tuition plan, a middle-class tax cut, etc. All of these would have helped the Trump voters far more than the urban poor or coastal elites. These voters either didn’t believe her or didn’t like her. The blow-back to dynastic policies that Jeb Bush got in the GOP primary, Clinton got in the general election. (In that sense, the primary was “rigged” to favor a weak but “inevitable” candidate.) Finally, while I at least pushed away those who hated change, why oh why did I ignore my inner voice about how folks would view Hillary? For those of us old enough to remember, the “scandals” of the Clinton years wore the country out. And my FIRST reaction to Hillary’s email controversy was “here we go again”. While there is in fact is a huge right wing conspiracy, it is also true that the Clintons have always pushed the envelope. How did I forget it was the reason I did not support her in 2008? That right wing conspiracy did not disappear during President Obama’s administration, he just always understand he had to play by their rules in order to avoid fueling it. It is a lesson the Clintons have never learned. And if that is my reaction as a progressive, what was the reaction in middle and rural America?
I never believed the Bernies of the world were the answer, nor do I believe it today. The GOP would have destroyed him as much as they did Clinton, albeit on different grounds. But Uncle Joe? What could they have come after him with? One plagiarism “scandal” from 40 years ago? That is it. What if the Dem party had not been so determined that Hillary would be the standard bearer. Could we have given Joe a couple more months to grieve and then supported him? We’ll never know now, but I am very concerned that the Dem party not rush to judgment about what went wrong here. I started reading this weekend Joy-Ann Reid’s “Fracture: Barack Obama, the Clintons and the Racial Divide”. Joy saw this coming. Unfortunately, none of us knew just how big of a catastrophe it would be.
So we’ll pick ourselves, dust ourselves off, and fight on. But let’s not make the same mistakes going forward.
We take this allllll around the mulberry bush….Hillary lost because America wanted to wash the black off if from having a black president….because they wanted to put POC back in their “place”….and because white women chose race over gender….
and right on point those folks who want to give analysis as to what is wrong with DEMs always want to pivot away from the issue of racism and justice….in their seeming obsession with bringing in white racist voters…..in the meantime scorning the voters who consistently vote for them….
but this is not new with the DEM Party….not new at all….it is why we lost the House in 2010 and in 2014
We lost because the DEMs ran from the President…cause they wanted that white racist voter…but it did not work…but still they rather scorn their President…this is who they are….

I agree, pf. And the fact is that Clinton won the popular vote by a far larger number than Gore did. I refuse to turn on Democrats. There is racism on the left that is also clearly showing, but to turn around and blame ourselves is destruction because the real problem is the GOP! THEY are the ones who are not governing, who have trashed our Constitution, our democracy and the lives of so many of our citizens. I do blame the ones who ran from PBO in 2014; they thought they needed to go toward the right to win when the truth was there was no way they could go far-right enough. But even if they did, if elected they would have voted with us 60-80% of the time (this was from analysis of voting records), which was way more than the 0% that their GOP replacement did. The purity hounds who trashed the blue dog Dems in 2010 refused to listen and we lost the House. There is one thing that GOP do that we do not. However much they disagree, they vote as a block. I guess when we saw the rifts in that party and though it would cause their downfall, forgot that as long as it has an R in front of it they will pull the lever no matter who the candidate is. We are the ones who pick and choose and allow our differences to divide us.

I know I will feel better once POTUS speaks today at the press conference. He’s going to have to call for support of the office of the presidency as an institution because that is who he is and what he cares most deeply about. But I don’t for one moment suspect that he thinks Trump is suddenly somehow qualified to undertake the seriousness of the job. I’m sure he’s acutely well aware of that after their meeting.
I think it was after their first meeting post election that he was asked if he walked back his campaign comments on that man’s unfitness for office and he said, “I stand by what I said”.

One thing Dr. Meyers said is that the church bears responsibility, that ministers were weak and did not stand up before the election. He has always spoken out and been royally castigated here in Oklahoma, but he continues. Fortunately his church supports him wholeheartedly. We make a safe place for him and others.
One thing I think is that in the south, Baptist ministers are going to have to start speaking out against the horror of Trump. That is what will sway people in this part of the country. We moved here from California, and it was culture shock. They, were/are 30 years behind, and proud of it. One day just after we moved here, my husband came home from work or the Y in a state of shock. He said, “You know what I got asked today when I was introduced to someone? What church do you go to?” That is the most common question here when meeting someone. People ask it all the time. If they ask me, when I answer “Mayflower” they say….”Oh, that far left liberal place.”

I’ve thought about transmitting this message, constantly, since Friday because by that time it was already beyond any reasonable doubt that – other than the Southern States revolting against America – we have never witnessed a graver threat to every dimension of our National Security.
As harsh as it may sound, the President of the United States of America swears an Oath of Office to protect the Nation from any threat – foreign or domestic. In Trump’s case, it’s an internal threat an external threat and a threat to a planet capable of sustaining life.
It’s just what it is and there’s simply no escaping the reality that President Obama is going to have to take unprecedented actions to prevent a catastrophe never witnessed in human history.
Sorry for being so blunt but it’s just the way it is and we have very few days to rectify the imminent threat.

Make no mistake, President Obama’s Oath of Office is absolutely applicable to the situation that is unfolding, minute by minute. It’s just what it is and I don’t intend to argue with anyone here about the gravity of the facts and their implications.

Thankful for you every day. Love and light to Ms. Chips every day and every night. My heart is with everyone here as you comment about struggles and sorrows, and joys and celebrations. Thankful especially to all of the Veterans who served our nation and who now bless and honor TOD. I have gotten comfort and uplift from looking back at the Veteran’s Day postings on TOD, watching POTUS’s participation in the ceremony, etc. I am reminding myself daily that President Obama is our President now and for many more days, and to make myself spend time in that goodness. Gwen Ifill, the veteran journalist and newscaster who co-hosted “PBS NewsHour,” has died at the age of 61, her close friend Michele Norris said Monday.
Ifill — who also worked at The Washington Post, The New York Times and NBC News — became moderator of the PBS “Washington Week in Review” in 1999 and co-host of “NewsHour” in 2013. She and co-host Judy Woodruff were the first women to co-host a nightly TV news broadcast.
Ifill also moderated vice presidential debates in 2004 and 2008, as well as a 2016 Democratic primary debate.
