Right-Wing Media Ignore Role Of Subsidies, Claim Insurance Premium Increases Are A “Death Spiral” For Obamacare

Reports that benchmark health insurance premiums will increase by an average of 25 percent from 2016 to 2017 for plans purchased on Healthcare.gov marketplace exchanges have prompted right-wing media outlets to claim the price hike is proof of “the collapse” of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and evidence of a so-called Obamacare “death spiral.” In reality, the majority of individual insurance customers will be insulated from cost increases due to proportional increases in the health care subsidies, and these premium increases are still in line with anticipated health care costs initially predicted by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

Bringing this over from previous thread as I love the quote from Al Giordano. 😊

    Hi everyone,
Running behind, but for good cause. Working every day until the election at the local phone bank helping you all make those important calls to voters. Best story from yesterday…someone spoke to a woman with 9 daughters all going to walk the mile to the polls this morning to vote together for HRC .

Got Al Giordano’s most recent newsletter yesterday. Love this part of it
“That problem is not going to be solved in one single election year but the White House has embarked on a plan that will continue long into the future and the Obama Museum in Chicago – which will include a kind of organizing academy as a big part of its mission – is going to play a role for decades to come. ”

Love how POTUS is keeping on organizing the country even after he leaves the White House

Must get some sleep so I’m ready for today’s shift. Keep well everyone, and I’ll try to drop in a few times between now and Election Day. GOTV!!

Wow, ch4biden, that’s terrific news! If there is a an organizing academy as part of the Obama museum, I hope Al Giordano if invited as a guest lecturer.

PBO has said he wants to tackle gerrymandering as one of his first tasks post-POTUS. I didn’t realize he was already putting an organizing machine in place.

        God, I love this guy.

    • October 26, 2016 at 10:03 am

I appreciate you working so hard cd4bien! I’m going to go phone bank tomorrow. There’s a big push here in California for us all to help. Which I’m happy to do.

Thanks for the part of Al Giordano’s newletter. He’s my go to person on twitter. Anytime you want to share anything from his newsltters I really appreciate!

      GM cd4biden.

Glad to hear that Al Giordano (who has amazing sources) is on the same page as TODville, who KNOW that PBO will be so relieved to pass the baton of the foundation he has worked to build for 8 years to HRC and Tim Kaine.

Anyone who has dug only slightly more deeply than MSM headlines, know that PBO’s greatest JOY is in young people and developing their potential and their leadership skills. To cite only a few examples:

      1) #MyBrothersKeeper

      2) Passing the baton of continent-wide leadership to today’s young leaders — Justin Trudeau for North America, Matteo Renzi for Europe,

      3) And of course, PBO shares with Nelson Mandela the true delight and sheer joy of being around infants and youngsters (could fill a book — glancing at @PeteSouza).

No doubt already posted here, but supports Al’s newsletter:

      Article opens with:
“You can find a trapdoor spider (Aptostichus barackobamai) inching across certain parts of Northern California, or see a bright orange spangled darter (Etheostoma Obama) swimming a Tennessee river, or come upon a lichen (Caloplaca obamae) the color of gold on Santa Rosa island, off the California coast.

You can visit the Barack Obama Academy in Plainfield, N.J., or the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy in Dallas, or the Barack Obama Academy of International Studies in Pittsburgh. You can drive down Barack Obama Avenue in East St. Louis, or Obama Way in Seaside, Calif., — or President Barack Obama Highway here in Riviera Beach, just 10 miles and another reality from the stately pleasure-dome Mar-a-Lago.”

MSM either deny or don’t realize that PBO has no need for legacy building — he’s done it himself, by rising to national prominence in 2004 at the Boston DNC, announcing his candidacy for President in Springfield, Illinois in 2007, and by winning #TwoTermsBaby and governing over those 8 years with a strategic, firm and steady hand that America has been blessed to have.

Morning all. As more people take advantage of early voting in states across the country, the ‘no early voting’ rules in states like Pennsylvania seem more and more antiquated. Wish there was a way to mandate a uniform system of voting across the country, but that would require members of Congress as well as all state governors sharing the common goal of making voting more convenient and accessible to all. That’s about as likely as seeing a unicorn on your way to work today.

    GM TODville.

Desertflower mentioned earlier this week that she’s taking a short trip, but will check her phone for updates here.

She also mentioned that she shares her BD with HRC, so I couldn’t resist by wishing both Happy BDs (with plants, not food, of course 😉 :

Happy BD to TODville stalwart DF, and HRC, who is counting on AZ to turn blue next month:

Most of my favorite flowers are the “buttercup” type, and orange is my favorite color, so no surprise here:

There are so many remarkable things about succulents that make them appealing to patio gardeners like myself — they’re amazingly resilient, are the chameleons of the plant world (am constantly surprised and delighted by how quickly their leaves change with sun and/or cool/cold weather) and reproduce by producing (darling clones of themselves). The only thing they hate (i.e., may die from) is too much water, so this is also for those in rainy climes to enjoy vicariously.

How is Trump up by 2 in Florida?

    • 63 amk for obama
      October 26, 2016 at 10:36 am

Polls tighten as the actual polling day nears. Many ‘undecideds’ make up their dumb minds only towards the end. Remember Obama won FL by less than a point in 2012 and every one was freaking out that he was gonna lose FL.

    • October 26, 2016 at 10:48 am

That is a bogus outlier poll. Even multiple other polls out today on Fl. have Clinton up by 3-4 pts. The sample on that poll was not weighted by voter demographics.

    • 65 FoxfireTX
      October 26, 2016 at 12:36 pm

That’s why you’re always better at looking at averages than a single poll. Even the good ones can miss out on sampling in a single poll.

    when you live in the ultimate Swing State, you get used to the daily swings in polls and media speculation hyping the polls in the favor of one candidate versus another;

in order to cope with these predictions, find that this always works for me (as long as we are still in campaign mode):

    – if a poll is released that shows my candidate is behind compared to what I want that candidate to be;

    – then I do not challenge its validity;

    – rather, I take the poll literally and use it as a motivator to work even harder to try and mobilize voters to make up the difference;

    – until the very last minute, I know that the poll that really counts is how many actual votes are being cast for my candidate … and for this, I try to follow the guidelines from within the internal campaign.

so if you feel alarmed by any poll, remember that we supporters can play a big role in getting to our desired outcome by:
    – donating money,
    – phone banking,
    – knocking on doors,
    – contacting people in our own networks, and
    – providing material and moral support to the volunteers and staff in our local offices.

    GM TODers….

some years ago when my children were small…an African Arts exhibition came to the Philadelphia Museum of Art…there was sculpture…art…and artifacts…there was even a griot presentation along with the recreation of an actural Afrcian Market place …it was simply fantastic…but what wa most earth shattering for me was the scuptur pieces tht looked like me…my face structire…my noes ..my lips…this validated my presecen on the planet…gave a sense of belonging…it has a profpuns effect on me..

yesterday…i along with my daughter and with members from my daughter’s mosque..went to the African American Museum of History and Culture….

What a Phenomenal Place…i see me here…i feel me here….this is my “home”

let me share my daughter’s thoughts:
I just experienced the most amazing afternoon at the National Museum Of African American History and Culture. We only got to see one floor, L4 cultural galleries, and we are planning to return. Everyone should plan to go! It was the first time ever that I related to everything in the museum. I am so humble at our greatness presented to the world when They told us so many times that we don’t have culture or simply we are insignificant to history that we were slaves then reappear during the 60’s. This museum is a national treasure!

TODers ..esp those that met this year in DC….

We must make a trip to go…

What an extraordinary experience it was for me….brings tears of JOY….just thinking about it….

    I, too, sing America..Langston Hughes

    I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
    When company comes,
    But I laugh,
    And eat well,
    And grow strong.

    I’ll be at the table
    When company comes.
    Nobody’ll dare
    Say to me,
    “Eat in the kitchen,”

They’ll see how beautiful I am
    And be ashamed—

    I, too, am America.

Disgusting and Shameful…., a complete and total failure.

Since the beginning of 2016, ABC’s World News Tonight, CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News have devoted just 32 minutes to issues coverage, according to Andrew Tyndall.

Differentiating issues coverage from daily campaign coverage where policy topics might be addressed, Tyndall defines issues coverage by a newscast this way: “It takes a public policy, outlines the societal problem that needs to be addressed, describes the candidates’ platform positions and proposed solutions, and evaluates their efficacy.”

And here’s how that kind of in-depth coverage breaks down, year to date, by network:

ABC: 8 minutes, all of which covered terrorism.

NBC: 8 minutes for terrorism, LBGT issues, and foreign policy.

CBS: 16 minutes for foreign policy, terrorism, immigration, policing, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

No trade, no healthcare, no climate change, no drugs, no poverty, no guns, no infrastructure, no deficits. To the extent that these issues have been mentioned, it has been on the candidates’ terms, not on the networks’ initiative.
