Thank you, Nerdy, for your dedication in maintaining this site and giving us this place of refuge, especially as we weather through this twilight zone of a presidential election. Congrats, swbluega. Such an honor for President Obama to be personally chosen by the late Shimon Peres to deliver this eulogy. Fascinating to hear him tell how they found shared values and a resonance is sharing their personal stories.

GM TOD – your President has more empathy in his little finger than most politicians have in their entire lives. If you haven’t seen the video – do watch. He thinks and he speaks and we are richer for having heard.

Thank you NW for the thread & congrats on 1st swbluega

At the 24:30 mark, Josh Earnest says congress is suffering from rapid onset buyers remorse after veto override of the 9/11 bill. Ignorance is not an excuse. Congress arguments now are the same that the administration has been making for months. It’s a total embarrassment. Josh was on a roll yesterday. He is simply the best.

Thanks for this, LH. LOTS of evidence here they had plenty of warning.

      • September 30, 2016 at 11:08 am

Wait. Are these children? Did they not read the bill? They did not have to vote on the bill. They could have tabled it and look at the bill further if they had concerns, instead of voting. Blaming PBO because they did not do their jobs is so elementary and tiring. “Ignorance is not an excuse.” BOOM.

The WHPC moron who says “should you be gloating and shamming Congress” and “why shame them with this kind of talk and not work with them to fix it”? What the FUCK!

        • September 30, 2016 at 1:41 pm

In other words: the President should AGAIN protect them against public embarrassment. Or it’s the job of the President to “compensate” for the stupidity and irresponsibility of Congress.

The media has normalized, internalized for too long the irresponsibility exhibited by the Second Branch of the United States Government. It’s about time they realize this is not normal behavior and that Congress, or more specifically, the Congress republican leadership, should be held accountable.

        September 30, 2016 at 11:47 am

You have to give Josh Earnest a lot of credit for being able to consistently choose the correct words in response to the reporters questions/statements/accusations.

At some point, I would have let a curse word or two accidentally slip out…like…assholes. 😀 😀

It’s during a time like this that I miss my Chipsticks so very much! We would cover a whole thread with comments surrounding this WHPC and be falling down laughing at these idiots and at Congress.

“Won’t you come home dear Chipsticks, won’t you come home”, back to TOD where you belong” (sing to the tune of “won’t you come home bill bailey”)

      • September 30, 2016 at 12:43 pm

I listened carefully to Josh. Apparently some democrats complained that Barack Obama didn’t “reach out to them” enough. You know what I think ? That the President realized pretty early in the process that this whole bill was just about politics; he was disgusted and didn’t want to “play” this game. He let them sink in their whole stupidity, so they would learn a lesson. With republicans at the helm, congressional activities and legislation have become just a political game and the President is very very very tired of it. I’m a bit more empathetic to congressional democrats who are put in a difficult position; yes they could fight back hard but since the media doesn’t inform the population at all, it puts the honest and principled politicians at a huge disadvantage and democrats have come to realize it.

There are two very deep problems in the american political culture: 1) the devolution/corruption/radicalization of the republican party and 2) an incompetent/lazy/irresponsible media that always gives them a pass. A political party that has thrown decency and responsibilities out the window, with a media that doesn’t act as a referee to make people accountable. So the other political party who still wants to govern by principle is put in an almost impossible position…

and I would add, Democrats who would rather act like “sheep” rather than take a moral, intelligent, and thoughtful stand against 9/11 grieving families because everything is NOT all about THEM!

        • September 30, 2016 at 3:23 pm

I understand what you’re saying but because this is such a huge breach of the law and international norms, it’s hard for me to believe that PBO didn’t do everything he could to stop it. I don’t think he would ever allow the military to be open to frivolous lawsuits, among other things.

As for Congress, now what? Are they really going to let this stand or go back on all this and continue to look like failures until the election is over?

  10. September 30, 2016 at 10:22 am

CNN host Jake Tapper couldn’t understand why Trump would be bringing this up given his history with affairs, his history with women and the history of his staff.

Trump surrogate Kaleigh McEnany replied that she agreed it was the wrong strategy for the Trump campaign to turn to, even if they are desperate. “That being said, the people around him, I certainly think, should bring it up on the airwaves,” she said.

Tapper wondered how exactly Trump’s staffers could manage that given their own history of extra-marital affairs. ..“Roger Ailes, Steve Bannon, Rudy Giuliani, Newt Gingrich. He is surrounded by a philanderers club. Why would any of them have a leg to stand on?”

          • September 30, 2016 at 10:54 am

Makes me wonder if the curriculum has changed in journalism schools. Are they teaching that facts should take a back seat to ratings? Can objectivity be ignored if it comes down to personal values and ethics versus corporate loyalty (and the almighty dollar)?

              • September 30, 2016 at 11:28 am

These guys are not very different from the politicians they rail about regarding big money. So many of them now are aiming for the million dollar paycheck, book deals, etc. Much more, many have nary a thought process about the issues they cover. There is no depth. They wait for one person to craft a narrative, and like sheep, they repeat it ad nauseam. So, so, few have distinguished themselves.

I am often entertained when one of them takes a stand on a certain issue, and all of their peers go to praising them, as if they did something that they should not be doing every day.

Journalism is not what it was, not even two decades ago when I first came to the U.S. All about the ratings and the dollars, these days.

Very good article on PBO’s underlying message to the Israeli people in his eulogy today:

“Obama long ago failed to cajole Netanyahu toward lifting Israel’s military occupation. To be fair, I don’t think there is a person on earth who could force Netanyahu to this goal.

It took the president rather a long time to realize he was dealing with a totally recalcitrant and unmovable person who lacked any vision for the future beyond the preservation of his own power. Once he did internalize that message, as well as the very clear signs that Netanyahu had no problem insulting the president over and over, Obama very understandably turned away. But he still had a message to convey — a message of aspiration and encouragement.

And so, on Friday morning in Jerusalem, he conveyed that message.”

on one hand they are baiting the punk, on the other, this.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — As the last full month of this presidential contest begins, Hillary Clinton is shifting toward a pure base-turnout strategy, inching away from her all-out effort to lure disaffected Republicans in favor of a traditional get-Democrats-to-the-polls effort that mirrors Barack Obama’s 2012 game-plan.

Gone are Clinton’s regular references to winning over moderate conservatives and her sly allusions to GOP leaders meant to give defecting Republicans a framework for abandoning their nominee. With 39 days to go, Brooklyn headquarters and battleground state operatives are activating the massive surrogate machinery, a heavy early voting push, and a large-scale registration offensive they think they need to secure a win in November.

The Democrat’s team won’t abandon all efforts to reach center-right voters – especially not after the last week of September saw her opponent revert to an insult-driven campaign by body-shaming a Latina pageant queen and dredging up Bill Clinton’s infidelities as a means to tar Hillary Clinton. Indeed, the campaign this week unveiled radio ads highlighting Republican voters backing her in seven swing states, while it touted the endorsement of former Virginia Sen. John Warner. But the push is no longer a Tier One priority, as resources shift to energizing the young and minority voters Clinton will need on her side.

Clinton’s targets almost universally echo Obama’s from four years ago in the individual states where the election will be won and lost.
