The key, though is the moderators. The Institute’s guidelines ask moderators to address uncivil behavior by calling it out; enforce debate rules equally; hold candidates accountable for truthfulness and integrity; treat candidates equally when it comes to complexity of issues and debate rules; and be respectful in interacting with the candidates.
Most important, to say that when a candidate lies, the other candidate can use his or her rebuttal time to call out the lies while moderators remain silent, is to take away the rival candidate’s ability to answer questions the way they want, and instead forcing them to use their time on the other candidate’s turf. And, given Trump’s lack of policy chops, knowledge, and interest, that means a more substance-free debate.

More than ever, debates need to be more than infotainment, offering a serious exploration of candidate’s positions, beliefs, and ability to govern. That puts a burden on the candidates, on the audience in the hall, and on the moderators. For the sake of America’s ability to govern itself, they all need to rise to the occasion. The NICD guidelines are a start.

LH, I don’t believe any of the debate moderators is going to behave with integrity because ‘infotainment’ is what they’re all about and none of them could care less about “rising to the occasion.” Hillary is literally going to be on her own fighting back and presenting her positions and we will have to give her all the emotional and post debate support we can. I remember reading something from Al Giordano early this month about not putting too much emphasis on the debates because they rarely change the basic dynamics of a race. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m keeping my expectations of the moderators very low.

In watching the campaign coverage this year, I’ve sometimes had the same distressing feeling I felt in the run-up to the war in Iraq — that we in the media were greasing the skids to a bad outcome for our country. In the debate about invading Iraq, news organizations scrupulously quoted each side but didn’t adequately signal what was obvious to anyone reporting in the region: that we would be welcomed in Iraq not with flowers but with bombs. In our effort to avoid partisanship, we let our country down.

When some in cable TV cover Trump endlessly without sufficiently fact-checking his statements or noting how extreme his positions are, because he is great for ratings and makes money for media companies, we are again failing the country. We are normalizing lies and extremism.

You think? I think all the people that “think” they are journalists, should really question what their REAL jobs are and their responsibility to the citizens of this country are…

    Review: http://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp

Members of the Society of Professional Journalists believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. Ethical journalism strives to ensure the free exchange of information that is accurate, fair and thorough. An ethical journalist acts with integrity.

The Society declares these four principles as the foundation of ethical journalism and encourages their use in its practice by all people in all media.

The SPJ Code of Ethics is a statement of abiding principles supported by explanations and position papers that address changing journalistic practices. It is not a set of rules, rather a guide that encourages all who engage in journalism to take responsibility for the information they provide, regardless of medium. The code should be read as a whole; individual principles should not be taken out of context. It is not, nor can it be under the First Amendment, legally enforceable.

For an expanded explanation, please follow this link.

    Seek Truth and
    Report It

Ethical journalism should be accurate and fair. Journalists should be honest and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.

More at the link….Gee, turns out that it really IS the job of a journalist to get the truth out! Fact checking the debates would, in fact, be the job of a REAL journalist.

    Hello TOD,

First of all, thank you again, Nerdy for the beautiful, photo, video and fact-filled posts on the museum opening! I came home from a long day yesterday and was able to put a collection of links and YouTubes together for F&F who might have missed it. I watched PBO’s speeches at the opening and the reception and I also got choked up when he talked about bringing his grandkids there someday. I wasn’t feeling the idea of watching W’s speech, but after seeing a few selected quotes here, and the pic of FLOTUS hugging him, I’m thinking of checking it out.

I’ve been super busy lately due to work but also some backyard fundraising events a friend and I have been doing to raise money for our local Democratic Headquarters. We raised $400 at our first event! The Dem HQ was so excited to get it! I can’t tell you how empowering and uplifting it is to be able to participate and help the GOTV efforts (don’t feel safe canvasing like I did in previous elections). When my friend and I were there turning in the $$, another volunteer said they would be attending a naturalization ceremony the next day to register the new citizens to vote as they exited the ceremony! These are the vital, everyday, squeeze out every vote things your local Dem HQ does.

I just want to tell those of you who may not feel comfortable phone banking or canvasing yourselves that you can help in other ways. You can do a backyard fundraiser (small, affordable donation suggestions) and invite your friends and neighbors; you can donate snacks, bottled water or gift cards for coffee, etc to your local Dem HQ. Think of what you CAN offer, not what you can’t. Everyone has something to offer, some way they can help. I guarantee you will feel less helpless and stressed after you do!

GE vc, hope I catch you before the land of Nod.

Stunning, yet not surprising at all, unfortunately.

It’s clear that the Charlotte PD has some major problems — hope there’s a thread here this week to discuss. They’re just like the Ferguson PD, lying from the time the gun was still smoking, from the police chief on down.

Since I don’t have TV, have no idea if CNN issued a retraction on this (posted early this morning eastern time on the overnight thread):

          From the article:
Todd Walther, local FOP spokesman, “I didn’t quote the facts. It’s just speculation, that’s all it was.”

          snip /

“The CNN segment has been shared widely on social media and on conservative media outlets…”

Hi Arap, Nod is not on my immediate horizon right now. I’m alternating between playing online scrabble or solitaire ‘Free Cell’, which I have great difficulty mastering.

Re shooting, nothing surprises me anymore, disgusts me, yes. It’s like they do not see us as human at all. 😦

`Another way to say all of this is that if the rhetoric of superiority works to maintain the entitlement, hatred and direct physical force remains underground. But when that rhetoric begins to fail, force and hatred waits in the wings, ready to explode.

The growing cultural and institutional power of African Americans has threatened that sense of entitlement and the “normalization” of hate. We are now witnessing the explosion.’

This part perhaps ??? 😆 😆 We stood underneath a low, corrugated tin roof next to a lady who sells cigarettes and chewing gum. And he just seems very comfortable in his own skin, just walking around, loose, relaxed. Of course, I think he was having the head of the Taliban whacked in Pakistan while we were eating. Which is kind of awesome.”

It brought back memories of when our illustrious Prez was roasting Donald Trump so effortlessly and elegantly while Seal Team Six was carrying out his instructions to take out Bin Laden. He’s a cool customer who has made multi-tasking an art.

US President Obama thanks the Aga Khan Development Network at the Clinton Global Initiative

I want to thank our partners in this effort, including the government of Sweden and the Aga Khan Development Network. Starting next year, civil society groups will be able to use these centers to network and access knowledge and technology and funding that they need to put their ideas into action. And we’ll start with six centers in Latin America, in Sub-Saharan Africa, in the Middle East and in Asia. Oppressive governments are sharing “worst practices” to weaken civil society. We’re going to help you share the “best practices” to stay strong and vibrant.
