House Republicans’ IRS hearing doesn’t go as planned

But the twist came when Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee made clear that this hearing could serve their political purposes, too.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York, asked if people under IRS audit are free to release their tax returns, a situation [Donald Trump] has asserted in refusing to release his forms. Koskinen said such taxpayers can release their returns.

Nadler also asked if someone can use money from a charitable foundation to buy a portrait or a football helmet autographed by former quarterback Tim Tebow or to pay fees from legal disputes. Reports have said money from the Donald J. Trump Foundation has been used for those purposes.
Democrats then went on to highlight some of the items that could prove problematic for Trump to disclose, such as his actual income, what he pays the government in taxes, clues to his actual net worth and records of his charitable giving. Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) wondered aloud if discovering payments by Russia might suggest a monetary – or even treasonous – motive for going soft on a U.S. rival.

Needless to say, this wasn’t the direction House Republicans had in mind, but let this be a reminder to members that interesting things can happen when they open a closed door.

Arrived home from budget hearing and Dem meeting to find TV blanket coverage of “Unrest Porn”

I am filled with rage! Earlier this summer I speculated that trump was itching to start a riot before the election. I’m wondering whether the protesters started the unrest or was the peaceful protest infiltrated by agent provocateurs…

    – did the national media pay any attention to Charlotte before people came out onto the street ?

    – anyone else find it ironic that right-wingers claim state’s rights while in the same breath they are demanding that PBO come out this very minute and help them quell the protests generated by actions of the local police ?

    – how do you spend almost 8 years practicing racism on a President, nominate a demagogue who has used racism as the key organizing principle of his campaign, and then shamelessly turn around and blame the victimized President for increasing the racism?

~Whether you are a Democratic intern writing a “woe be unto us” email seeking donations, or a civilian on a blog fretting over every ebb and flow of the election: stop it. You’re not helping anyone.

Fear can be a motivator. But as President Obama showed, hope is greater. Hope is what elevates us above mere animals. Hope is what gives us a path to the future. Build on that, rather than telling us how dire things are. ~

A Trump campaign chair in Ohio says there was ‘no racism’ before Obama

Kathy Miller called the Black Lives Matter movement ‘a stupid waste of time’ and said low African American voter turnout could be due to ‘the way they’re raised’

Donald Trump’s campaign chair in a prominent Ohio county has claimed there was “no racism” during the 1960s and said black people who have not succeeded over the past half-century only have themselves to blame.

Kathy Miller, who is white and chair of the Republican nominee’s campaign in Mahoning County, made the remarks during a taped interview with the Guardian’s Anywhere but Washington series of election videos.

“If you’re black and you haven’t been successful in the last 50 years, it’s your own fault. You’ve had every opportunity, it was given to you,” she said.

“You’ve had the same schools everybody else went to. You had benefits to go to college that white kids didn’t have. You had all the advantages and didn’t take advantage of it. It’s not our fault, certainly.”

Miller also called the Black Lives Matter movement “a stupid waste of time” and said lower voter turnout among African Americans could be related to “the way they’re raised”.

Ugh!! There’s a lot of this in Ohio. People say these things and don’t even realize how ridiculously offensive and untrue they are. We see it all the time. People talk like this not understanding that the person they are talking to might not agree. That’s why it is so important to challenge the words. We can’t just let it go thinking….well, they’re nice in other ways. If no one challenges them they will continue on thinking everyone else feels the same way. Of course, this is nothing new. I can only hope that this is the time the majority will stand up and say….enough.

People in CA, IL, FL, IA, MN, all 50 states say these stupid things and sometimes to an AA’s face when they have no F#Cking idea what AA’s go through or even KNOW any AA’s personally. These people will say it to AA’s they just met. It’s as if they were planted here from another world and know nothing of American history. I’ve had foreign born people who immigrated from other countries tell me this yet they have NO clue about AA and American history.

Morning all. I hope there is a massive number of AA voters who turn out on election day in North Carolina and that the DOJ sends federal watchers to be sure they are not harassed. The fascists think they’re in charge right now, but the vote is a very powerful weapon when people act together. No one who tolerates the murder of black men and women should ever again be allowed near a public office and that includes mayors and city councils who appoint police chiefs. We have the collective power to do this if we do not give into despair.

We have the collective power to do this if we do not give into despair.

“Hope — Hope in the face of difficulty. Hope in the face of uncertainty. The audacity of hope! In the end, that is God’s greatest gift to us…A belief in things not seen. A belief that there are better days ahead.” Pres Obama

“I have always believed that hope is that stubborn thing inside us that insists, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us so long as we have the courage to keep reaching, to keep working, to keep fighting.” Pres Obama
