Taylor Lewis: President And Michelle Obama’s Legacy Lives On In October Issue Of ESSENCE

It’s the end of an era. While the Obamas are hoping that their initiatives—My Brother’s Keeper, Let’s Move, Let Girls Learn, to name a few—will live on, the couple hopes to hold onto the memories that they’ve made during their eights years in DC. Some of my fondest memories of the White House are just being with the girls on a summer night and walking the dogs around the South Lawn, talking and listening to them, trying to get Bo to move because sometimes it’s hot.”

****

****

“I think when it comes to Black kids, it means something for them to have spent most of their life seeing the family in the White House look like them,” Mrs. Obama said. “It matters. All the future work that Barack talked about, I think over these last few years, we’ve kind of knocked the ceiling of limitation off the roofs of many young kids; imaginations of what’s possible for them. And as a mother, I wouldn’t underestimate how important that is, having that vision that you can really do anything—not because somebody told you, but because you’ve seen and experienced it. I think that will be a lasting impact on our kids.”

    HEADS UP:

    1. Late Night with Seth Meyers has First Lady Michelle Obama scheduled tonight. I don’t know if she’s a guest or it’s a taped segment, but the show is on NBC and comes on at 12:30AM EDT.

    2. If you have not checked out Ava Duvernay’s MASTERPIECE, Queen Sugar on OWN. Run…run….run and catch it.

    3. Also check out the hilarious yet beautifully truthful Atlanta on FX.

    4. Queen Sugar and Atlanta show the amazing work that graces our screens when artists of color are allowed the space to tell their and our stories.

I keep trying to imagine what the debates are going to be like, and all I can come up with is 90min of:

Hillary: (explains in detail one of her policies..)

        Trump: “You’re wrong! Believe me.”

At that point he’ll either keep answering like a toddler, or state, “You’re a criminal who should be in prison, there’s no point to this debate.” and walk out because it’s the only way he won’t be humiliated on national television.

There’s no way to have even one event we call a “debate” these days, that’s going to consist of two adults answering questions and talking about policy in an educated, mature way.

It’s going to look like a random adult up against a bullying toddler who’s parent is nowhere to be found, and instead of bursting into tears when he’s getting bested, will just turn to insults, or will take his toys and go home.

The Obamas have definitely spoiled us and have raised the standards for what we should expect in a POTUS/FLOTUS (or in the case of BC FGOTUS???).

Each day I become more resigned that PBO’s term is coming to an end; more melancholy of what I know we will miss; but joyful that I lived during his administration and was able to experience his greatest.

How evil and how so very entitled. It’s okay for his father to deny people housing based on race, to beat workers out of contract payments, to file bankruptcy a gazillion times, why?, because he’s not a minority.

If this doesn’t motivate Latino’s, nothing will.

I keep seeing tweets that Ohio Dem Sen candidate Strickland cancels ad buys in key Ohio areas. Does anyone here know what’s going on?

    • September 9, 2016 at 5:35 pm

He has a new ad up in my area just north of Columbus ……. talking about the need to keep Ohio afloat during the economic
crash. It’s a late challenge to the lies …..but, better late than never. Who knows how everything will turn out. Maybe Ohioans
will turn against all the lies and negativity at some point.

    • September 9, 2016 at 5:46 pm

I think he’s cancelling ad buys in some areas and shifting to other areas. The DSCC has pulled their support so my guess is he’s trying to be as strategic as possible about his funds.

I’m gonna miss our POTUS and FLOTUS so much (saved that Essence cover to my photos), but I’m looking forward to what they will do in the coming years. As PBO himself said, he’s not going anywhere. And, if we can follow 8 years of Barack Obama with (knock on wood) 8 years of a female, liberal President? I know it will be ugly, with the misogynist haters doubling down on the racist haters, but the kids who will grow up with a completely different idea of who can be CIC than we all did…. that is glorious!

Watching Joy Reid, Katie Tur, and Tweety whip Trump surrogate Jack Kingston about Trump birtherism was a joy to behold. CM was continuing his pursuit of why, when all Trump’s surrogates insist that Trump now believes that PBO was born in the US and that his presidency is legitimate, Trump himself will not say so.

Kingston tried to go with the “HRC started it” conspiracy and Joy Reid shot that to shreds, citing sources and telling Kingston to look it up. Kingston tried to say that Trump’s supporters are primarily focused on the economy, jobs, etc. and Katie Tur, who has been following Trump’s campaign for the past 14 to 15 months (bless her heart) rebutted with a first hand account of the racist/sexist/threatening chants of these supporters at these rallies, and that Trump does nothing to discourage it.

The three of them cited polls stating that Trump supporters believe that PBO is a Muslim, not a US citizen, etc. They brought out videos showing Trump spouting his birther views as recent as this past December.

Why Trumps surrogates continue to embarrass themselves trying to justify his lies and trying to apologize on his behalf for things that he refuses to back down from is beyond me.

    • September 9, 2016 at 8:04 pm

swbluega I saw that and Joy did not put up with Jack Kingston B.S. Neither did the reporter, she told exactly how Trump supporters were, the things they be saying about President Obama. As someone said Joy Reid should have hosted that program the other night, instead of that Matt Lauer.

I am beginning to hate Trump’s lying surrogates as much as Trump himself. Hopefully, more journalists will follow Joy Reid’s lead. The worst part is I have a hard time tolerating those citizens that believe all their lies and are not even open to checking out and verifying what was said.

        • September 9, 2016 at 10:14 pm

Unfortunately, the problem is that there are biases and bigotry already there. Trump and the MSM’s rhetoric just confirms or validates for them what they already believe.

Who do u know that has a #ThroneOfGrace that awesome at any age? FLOTUS is in her early fifties and yet in this picture, she looks like POTUS snuck her out of her college dorm for a first date. I mean it’s perfection; a thing of beauty. Even in my twenties when I was thin, I never ever had a #ThroneOfGrace like that. Like the brother said, POTUS is thanking God everyday for being able to worship at FLOTUS #ThroneOfGrace forever.

From the linked article in the tweet above…..↓ ↓ ↓

      //…………………………………….

‘She was a sponge for knowledge’
Clinton and her allies started small but over time succeeded in dramatically expanding the health program for those who became ill after
9/11. Within weeks of the attacks she had helped secure $12m for a pilot project at Mount Sinai hospital, screening some 9,000 workers with suspected Ground Zero illnesses.

By April 2004 the program had grown to a $90m fund offering three free medical exams a year to 50,000 first responders and residents of lower Manhattan. In 2010, Clinton having passed on the baton to her successor in the US senate, Kirsten Gillibrand, reluctant Republicans in Congress were cajoled into passing the $4bn Zadroga Act, covering the health costs of those impaired by the toxic fumes. Last year the program was extended for 75 years, and now serves 65,000 emergency responders and almost 10,000 9/11 resident survivors.

Philip Landrigan, who hosted the first World Trade Center medical program at Mount Sinai, puts this success story in no small part down to Clinton’s relentless pursuit of the subject coupled with her attention to detail.

This line in the article reminded me that serious and determined politicians take incremental steps forward when that is all they can take in a given situation. >> “Clinton and her allies started small but over time succeeded in dramatically expanding the health program for those who became ill after 9/11.”

    LOL

THE PRESIDENT AND THE FIRST LADY ARE TOTALLY, DEFINITELY FUCKING EVERYWHERE IN THE WHITE HOUSE
    Damon Young, 9/9/16

Of course, its extremely presumptuous of me — or anyone, rather — to speculate on the Obamas’ sex life. Who knows what’s happening privately between them? For all we know, they could have one of those arrangements like Claire and Frank Underwood where they both kinda do their own thing (and occasionally include secret service agents).

But come the hell on! Look at them! Look at our first lady! Look at that ass! Look! At! Dat! Ass! Look at that look on the President’s face. It’s the same look you have on Thanksgiving while you’re praying before the feast; a look of “God is great and yadda, yadda, yadda, yadda, yadda is the praying done yet cause I can’t wait to smash the fuck out of this dressing.” They are totally, definitely, 100% fucking everywhere at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. From the windows to the walls. Till the sweat drips down Barack’s balls. Skeet, skeet, skeet, skeet. The playlist proves it!

FTR (and not that anyone cares) but I am totally uneasy with us going *there* on this blog. For all the Obamas’ service and so much else that we can speak about them doing that is relevant, it bothers me that we would elevate this private aspect of their lives in our TOD forum. not that my email to POTUS had anything to do with today’s decision on the Dakota Access Pipeline.

But I am glad tonight that before PBO departed for his Asian trip, I took the time to write him imploring his administration (specifically the DOJ Civil Rights Division) to step in and stand on the side of the Sioux Nation.

mine was just a very tinny voice among so many who have expressed support of those who have been working on this for a while now.

I humbly reminded him that many of us were very grateful for his support of the rights and well being of the First Americans and that a cool head would be needed to help resolve this contentious issue.

I don’t know how it will all end but I have no doubt that the sight of private security setting dogs on the protestors was totally unacceptable and escalating an already tense situation.

good luck to the people who will work on finding a solution that does not violate the rights of a marginalized group
