Vicente Fox: ‘I really apologize’ for Trump’s Mexico visit

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto “is taking an enormous political risk” by hosting Donald Trump in Mexico City on Wednesday, former President Vicente Fox said, decrying the Republican nominee’s visit as “opportunistic” and a “political stunt” while apologizing on behalf of the country for the president’s invitation.

“Trump is using Mexico, is using President Peña to push his sinking poll numbers,” Fox said in an interview with CNN’s “New Day” hours ahead of the scheduled meeting in the Mexican capital.

If Peña Nieto is seen as “going soft” on the businessman, Fox warned, “it will hurt him greatly.”

“He will even be considered like a traitor because we don’t accept to be offended,” he added, remarking, “I think this is a big mistake on the part of President Peña.”

Fox rejected the notion that the trip could improve the standing of either Trump or the sitting Mexican president among Mexicans.

It was stupid of him to invite this clown. If the dick is ill-treated, it riles up his racist base. It the dick is treated well, it riles up his racist base. Either way, pena is helping the clown and he has nothing to show for it himself.

    Pro-trade Democrats call Labor’s bluff.

Organized labor made a lot of political threats on trade. So far, they’ve flaked on them all.

Just ask Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who Tuesday clocked an easy win in Florida over the most Bernie Sanders-identified primary challenger in the country — even after her booting as Democratic National Committee chair. She voted to give the president fast-track authority to negotiate trade deals as a precursor to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and despite all the noise in Washington, every union in her district still endorsed her.

Cutting against what has quickly become the political conventional wisdom that Sanders and Donald Trump were propelled by widespread opposition to new trade deals, of the 28 House Democrats who were targeted by organized labor and the progressive base for supporting fast-track, Wasserman Schultz is now the 28th who either skated through a primary challenge or didn’t get one at all.

Rep. Ami Bera (D-Calif.), the man the AFL-CIO promised to make an example of for supporting fast-track last spring? He did better in this year’s primary than he’s ever done before, in a race happening as his father pleaded guilty to illegally funneling money to his campaigns.

    ///

That’s been true on the other side of the aisle too. For all the headlines that went to Paul Ryan’s anti-trade-focused, Trump-connected primary challenger on the other side of Wisconsin, the House speaker got 84 percent of the vote.

Worth a read on how the labour is shooting itself in the foot.

Good morning all of TODville. It is a cool smokey morning in Montana. Many fires in Idaho and Montana that we are getting the smoke. It is suppose to cool down so hope that will help the fires.

We just returned from a wonderful 5 day camping trip in the back country. No cell service. Read 4 books, did some hiking and slept alot. Perfect vacation. One day we drove to the top of a mountain. We were able to get cell service there so I downloaded some of the TOD pages to read later. So glad it was pretty quiet. Except for the Colin Kapernick(?) thing. I love the Stonekettle blog on his support of Colin. I also learned more about The Star Spangled Banner. I didn’t know the history and that Key was such a racist. I am having to rethink my support of the song. We really should change it.

Nerdy Wonka, thank you for your wonderful leadership of this blog. We really miss Chips (sending you lots of love) but we are thankful you are here.

Now I have to go back and read the last 3 days.

GA, to you Marilyn. Very nice to see your face today. 🙂 Only two days or so ago I was wondering *where* you (and Maryl) were. Nice to hear you had a handful of restful days, even if you had to go search ’em out in the boondocks back country.

        August 31, 2016 at 3:20 pm

GA vc. It wasn’t the longest I have been in the back country for awhile. I do love the silence of the mountains, with the ripple of the river and the cry of the birds. .We didn’t see any deer but we get home and have an injured deer in our yard. We believe it was hit by a car and is healing in the shade of our trees. Just wonder how long she will be there. I am one of those people that wants to feed her and give her water, but I know better. She ate the leaves and flowers of some of my flowers. Of well.

How is your off spring. Has he started to school?

        • 52 vcprezofan2
          August 31, 2016 at 3:43 pm

Hope your convalescing deer isn’t too badly hurt and can heal on her own. I suspect your flowers will bounce back too, especially if they are perennials. 🙂

Offspring is away again, though classes won’t start until next week. He’s okay. He missed the early performance he had planned to participate in, but, I’m sure there’ll be other opportunities to play. He is apparently working on the composition of the final 1½ pieces he has to complete before focusing on this thesis. :/

          • 53 mtmarilyn
            August 31, 2016 at 4:30 pm

I think the deer will heal. Our renter had called the Fish and Wildlife officer to come and check her out. He thinks she will heal on her own. At least enough to get her back to the woods. My flowers will come back, I just have to do something about the tall green sticks in my gardens.

I hope we have the opportunity to hear his completed piece. Tell him good luck.

Hope you have a good day!

Smartypants highlighting Republican ‘language’; yes, they talk like that, louder and clearer in the current Age.

    //………
But beyond the facts of this ongoing battle in the Republican ranks, what struck me was that at the end of the article, [Matt] Fuller wrote about how these folks are seeing this as a way to pay back Ryan because one of their leaders, Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kansas), recently lost his primary to a more “moderate” Republican. Take a look at how one member described their approach.

“How can you have a gang, and have one in your gang get stabbed, and do nothing?” another member asked. “You got to stab somebody, or else what’s the point of having a gang?”

First of all, can you imagine what would happen if a member of the Congressional Black or Hispanic Caucus talked like that – even anonymously? I guess that analogies about being in a gang aren’t problematic if you are a white conservative.
    …………………………..
The real question becomes whether or not that is what we want from our leaders.

Aloha and good morning Chips, Nerdy, and all of TODville!

Your chirpy weather reporter here, still with electricity, internet, and phone service. In fact, we’ve had no interruptions so far, and Madeline seems to be breaking up as she approaches our island (Hawaii Island, aka The Big Island). Unlikely she’ll cause any trouble on Oahu, where PBO is heading. Following Madeline is Lester, which looks to be veering to the north. Lester isn’t due until the weekend, and may well be a piddly little tropical storm at that point.

Signing off, from Kohala, Hawaii 🙂
