    The news chases squirrels, calls them rabid, and shoots them.

    Every damned day, news organizations scan the horizon for any distraction they could call a scandal — squirrel! — and, finding none, they just dredge up yesterday’s road kill and repeat it all again, over and over, asking the same questions that are so obvious as to be rhetorical but that nonetheless fill hours of airtime.

    Is Hillary Clinton a bigot because Donald Trump says so? they ask. Did TV’s anchors even consider what an insult that is to the 91 percent of African American voters who support her vs. 1 percent for Trump? Can’t our commentators see Trump’s trick: that he projects onto Clinton every failing of his own? He is crooked, so he calls her crooked; he is unhinged, so he calls her unhinged; he is a bigot so he first calls her a bigot. But the press treats each new attack as news to be debated. Seriously?

    • August 30, 2016 at 7:33 pm

      “…news organizations scan the horizon for any distraction…”

      Yes, Ladyhawke, we’re in the Distract and Discourage time of the election — not to mention the ongoing silly season.

      I have to remind myself that I’ll continue to be frustrated by the lack of journalistic integrity (does that even exist anymore?) and the unequal treatment /difference in standards applied to HRC. But I continuously try to filter out the nonsense [coming to TOD to vent, to get sane thoughts and FACTS, and to be reassured helps with the filtering process] and treat it with the annoyance that we would a gnat. In other words, shake it off, exhale, refocus, and keep moving forward.

    I’m reading some pieces that suggest DSCC is pulling back on their ad money for Strickland. He’s trailing Portman by 8 points so they are holding off to see how things shape up. Not sure about that strategy. Let’s hope things improve but looks like we have to count on other seats for now.

    Here is what RG3 had to say about Kaepernick.

    “My job isn’t to judge what another man feels about anything, so that’s where I stand with that,” Griffin said Tuesday before Browns practice.

    “I think you definitely have to bring a spotlight to issues that you feel are pertinent to society,” Griffin said. “Colin Kaepernick’s stance on the American flag, I can’t judge him for that. My stance is that for me, I’m a military brat. My parents both served. My dad did 21 [years]. My mom did 13. So that represents something totally different for me. So I can’t judge him on what his stance is or what his beliefs are. I can only just go about it the way I know how to.”

    “It’s not my place to judge what he wants to do or what he doesn’t want to do. So I’m focused on playing football, and if there’s any social issues that I feel like I need to address, then I’ll address them in my own way. But I’m not going to judge another man for addressing it how he wants to address it.”

      Don’t follow sports, but so many tweets about Kaepernick, impossible for anyone with an active Twitter account to not know about this so-called controversy.

      If MSM weren’t afflicted with #Romensia, they’d do a little digging and recall icons of professional sports Muhammed Ali and Jackie Robinson (this may have been posted here earlier, way behind as usual 😦 ).

    Trump Ally: No Voting Rights For Women Using Free Birth Control & Welfare Recipients
    Tuesday, 8/30/2016 12:13 pm

    Wayne Allyn Root, a Donald Trump admirer who often claims to be in frequent contact with the GOP candidate and has led campaign rallies for him in Nevada, said yesterday that people who receive federal benefits such as Medicaid, welfare and food stamps should lose their right to vote, as should women who use “free contraception” under the Affordable Care Act.

    Root’s plan would cut a large swath of Americans from the voter rolls: Roughly one in five Americans benefit from means-tested benefit programs, while 67 percent of women with private health insurance use copay-free contraception through the Affordable Care Act (which, by the way, is paid for by insurance companies, not by the federal government).

    Root told Virginia radio host Rob Schilling yesterday that much of the energy behind Trump’s campaign, as he discusses in his new book “Angry White Male,” is that the country is “evenly divided between the makers and the takers,” so “the middle class is basically paying, paying, paying and the poor get everything free, and it’s a disaster.”

    Root said that he had recently seen a map on the internet showing that if only “taxpayers” had been allowed to vote, the 2012 election would have been “a Republican sweep.”

      This could never happen in a million years, this is the republican privileged white males wet dream. They are itching to take away the right to vote of people of color and women that’s why they will never win. I am hoping people wake up.

    • 50 cd4biden
      August 30, 2016 at 8:12 pm

      Don’t get upset about this, jacqueline. Just let this guy rant on. He is just putting nails in Trump’s coffin when it comes to women voters. Every time this meme gets repeated more women, and more poor people will walk away from Trump. And if you think about it, Vets get federal benefits as well. He could lose their votes, too. And that is just what we want.
      My old college dorm mother, many, many years ago, told me you just have to let some people hang themselves. So, actually, when he talks like this give him a thumbs up in your mind. Say, “Go for it Root and Trump. Keep it coming.” He is just digging his own grave, which is exactly what we want to have happen to him.
      If nothing else, thinkinig like this helps lower your stress levels about the campaign. As desertflower posted two threads ago, the great columnist Molly Ivins always said about politicians, “The best way to get the sons of bitches is to make people laugh at them.” If we don’t keep laughing at them we will all get ulcers and high blood pressure. Let’s work like crazy until Nov 9th, and keep laughing the entire time.

    KY Legislator: Voicemail shows Bevin threatened him
    12:30 p.m. EDT August 30, 2016

    A Democratic state legislator alleges Gov. Matt Bevin left a message threatening him and his district on his voicemail one day after he refused to change parties.

    In the message, a copy of which was obtained late Monday by the Courier-Journal, Bevin told state Rep. Russ Meyer that he disagreed with his “decisions” and said he needed to understand how they will impact “you, your seat, your district.”

    A month and a half after Bevin made the phone call, Meyer said he learned that the administration had canceled an $11.2 million transportation project that he said is crucial to his district – a move Meyer said is “absolutely” payback for his refusal to change parties.

    How Michelle Obama got the job of being first lady so right
    Last updated 18:47, August 28 2016

    When Michelle Obama took to the stage at the recent Democratic National Convention, she reminded millions of people in America and around the world that when the Obamas leave the White House in January, we will not just be losing a respected leader in the president, but in the first lady as well.

    The 52-year-old’s speech was a genuine show-stopper – forceful, authentic, dignified and full of heart, just like her. “Our motto is, when they go low, we go high,” she said of her husband’s critics, staring down the camera.

    The speech came during a period of bitter partisan division in America. But instead of responding in kind to the ugly and juvenile rhetoric of Republican candidate Donald Trump, she elevated the tone by expressing an enduring optimism about the American dream – in a way that only a woman with her extraordinary life story could have.

    HE hits her…and then, KILLS HER?

    Ohio Man Fatally Shoots Black Woman With Assault Rifle After Hitting Her Car

    A 53-year-old Ohio woman was brutally murdered by a man who caused a car accident with her vehicle in the Cleveland area Saturday, according to multiple reports.

    Deborah Pearl, a mother and employee of a Cleveland Area Harley Davidson diner, was reportedly shot by Matthew Ryan Desha, a 29-year-old man toting a high-powered assault rifle, who police say killed her after hitting her with his jeep.

    Shortly after 7:20 a.m., Pearl was headed to work when Desha reportedly ran a red light at an intersection and hit her car, flipping his vehicle multiple times in the process. Afterward, Pearl is said to have stepped out of her car to assess the damage, at which time, he grabbed his rifle and shot at her at least 12 times, reports say.

    According to the New York Daily News, she could be heard screaming on 911 call tapes. Witness testimony revealed she had her hands up in the air as the man approached her before killing her.

    DL Hughley destroys Kaepernick critics: Blacks don’t get a ‘Sunday off’ from racist reality
    30 AUG 2016 AT 09:34 ET

    D.L. Hughley has had enough of Americans who get more upset by 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sitting during the national anthem than by police brutality against black Americans.

    While being interviewed by Chris Cuomo on CNN Tuesday, Hughley said that people are free to criticize Kaepernick, but he asked why they don’t speak up more when they see stories about police shooting unarmed black men.

    “You’ll see people come out and say… they are opposed to what Kaepernick is doing,” he said. “None of those people come out and say anything when people are being brutalized.”

    Hughley went on to say that many people are upset at Kaepernick because football is an escape from reality, and they don’t want to have that escape interrupted by serious political issues.

    “Football is an escape, and black people oftentimes don’t get an escape from reality,” he said. “Reality confronts us all the time, there’s no Sunday off.”

    Ohio Senate race:

    I live in this ultimate swing state.

    there is a lot of gop money pouring into the state to support former GWB key official portman.

    portman-supporting Ads against Strickland have been running non-stop for months. they have focused on accusing his record as governor when the economic collapse occurred during the recession.

    little mention is made of the fact that the recovery that is being assigned to kaisch had already begun when Strickland was defeated. actual Strickland and PBO policies (including stimulus and auto rescue) are related to the OH recovery and this has been reported by independent economists.

    for some reason, Strickland just started advertising just 2 or 3 weeks ago and this was widely reported in the local media;

    one problem is that Strickland had a primary election and challenger and portman did not;

    but the major problem is what I wrote here a few months ago => the Ohio Dem party has a huge internal struggle with the “old guard” holding onto power and selecting candidates from within their own ranks.

    One such candidate was put up to run against kaisch and yet he had some personal issues. so when these were exposed, his candidacy failed, he not only lost the election but took the down-ballot candidates down with him. his failure gave kaisch a land-slide win and he used it to consolidate power among Ohio GOP.

    Personally, I think that the Ohio senate race is not yet lost because the national campaign is not yet here in full blast. the race will be hard fought starting after labor day when routinely all roads to the White House must go through Ohio.

    • August 30, 2016 at 8:36 pm

      Thanks very much for this report. I’ll continue to keep a close eye on this race and see what develops. We need to do what we can to WIN.

        August 30, 2016 at 9:06 pm

        it was your concern above (about what the state of this OH Sen race),that made me try to explain what is going on locally;

        it is also important to know that Ohio is one of those states that still have a robust unionized workforce. the members of the union like Strickland because he protected them throughout his tenure and he was also the leader of the campaign against kasich’s push to make Ohio a right to work state.

        the unions and their supporters won this fight with such a huge margin that kaisch almost cried as he conceded that defeat.

        unfortunately kaisch also learned from that fight that he could hide behind his gop-dominated legislature and just sign crappy rightwinger laws when they are finalized.

        in spite of what he pretends and the media pushes kasich is no moderate

    why do people ignore the fact that not all immigrants are from Mexico?

    most immigrant communities, no matter their country of origin, are threatened by the speech and actions of the home-grown demagogue and will vote against him this November;

    in addition, so many people who had previously not finalized their citizenship have been doing so in huge numbers since he started to run.

    furthermore, the USCIS is doing a fantastic job of processing these citizenship application. for example, before where one such application was processed over 6 months or so, now the turn around is about 1 month.

    a few weeks ago, I attended a Naturalization ceremony:

    – it was one of 4 ceremonies happening in this location in a period of 1 month.

    – during this single ceremony, 220 people took their oath of citizenship.

    – the presiding judge said that there were people from 39 different countries in that single ceremony.

    – to put it into perspective, this is a city in the Midwest were the number of immigrants is not that huge.
    – the person I accompanied has already got their voter registration card (i saw it) because you could not take the oath before completing your application to vote.

    one person at the ceremony said during the informal reception that the USCIS held that: “i don’t know if trump clearly understands what is going to hit him come election day”. these are some of the people who may not necessarily show up in the polls but are determined to vote this November
