This reminds us that everyone can serve in his/her own way just by being who they are with whatever everyday skills that he/she has. This is a good thing to remember especially when we feel helpless in the face of all of the turmoil in our country these days.

I just love all these personal stories from the men and women who work on the WH grounds with such care and pride and satisfaction. I can only imagine a series like this from the staff on the INSIDE of the WH. Wow, now there are some stories!!

Thank you, meta, so much for these heart warming stories. I think they would make a very lovely book to add to our collection of biographies, political discussions, and, of course, the photo books from Pete Sousa, that we would all love to purchase at the end of this presidency. While I love the historical video tours we usually get of the White House, as you say,the personal stories of those who work there, and the pride they take in their jobs, is simply the best.

Goooood Morning Everyone! Have a fabulous Sunday!

I was blocked by Jonathan Capehart, we got into a back and forth about the why the press plays the “both sides do it” game. And I got blocked by Bomani Jones, to this day I don’t know why.

JC can be a bit thin-skinned. I’ve blocked by people whom I’ve only retweeted. I’m guessing sometimes it happens when you’re tagged in a tweet they don’t like that was sent from someone else. Blanket blocks, I call it. [shrug] Oh well.

It’s okay. I’ve blocked tons of RWers and BernieorBusters who never tweeted to me directly. I just decided I didn’t wanna see their crap in my TL.

I always hear anti-immigrant republicans claiming that in order to get a path to legalization, the undocumented people must first leave the country.

what these people arguing this way will not expose is that:

a republican congress changed immigration law and put a new clause that makes is very hard to re-enter once you overstay your visa or fall out of the law in any way (see below).

these republicans are counting on the fact that most Americans are vocal about immigration but are very unfamiliar with WHAT the CONTENT of the laws is and how laws are implemented.

for those of us who are very well informed about how hard it can be to deal with the current immigration system, we know that :

    – once you overstay your visa (even by a day) then the punishment is really heavy. you need to say out for many years;

    – once you overstay for 5 years, then you have to stay out for 10 years before you can even apply for re-entry.

    – and the years to stay out increased exponentially for each year you over stay.

    – even when you stay out the required time and reapply, chances are they will not let you back in unless you are one of these people who are rich enough to show a health bank account and ability to invest in the US.

by the way these laws apply to you even if your are now married to an American or have an American child.

you can imagine what this does to families. it is no incentive to leave or expose yourself for a chance of legalization.

the consequences of leaving the country is one reason people choose to continue overstaying and take their chances with the law by going under ground.

Bobfr, can you give us any idea/info as to why this is happening? Wasn’t it posted here at TOD in the last few days that PBO is supporting Erdogan? And aren’t we for helping the Kurds against ISIS? Am I reading all of these tweets incorrectly or is Erdogan really attacking the Kurds and we are doing nothing? What is going on? Or what am I missing?

              • August 28, 2016 at 1:44 pm

Erdogan has been an enabler of ISIS/DAESH from the start of the conflict in Syria. He despises the Kurds and would eradicate them from the planet if given the opportunity.

I have no idea what President Obama & NATO are doing coddling the dude; no idea whatsoever.

I’ve seen increasing evidence of the US supporting the Peshmerga/Kurds during the past year, but by continuing to allow Erdogan to do what he has been doing for ISIS/DAESH makes no sense to me. As you know, I originated the hashtag #TrustBarack and I’m sticking to that commitment, but US support of Erdogan – especially in the past several weeks causes me to wonder if this will be one of the few areas of Obama Policy that I disagree, totally (the only other major one being the refusal to bring GWB, Cheney and gang to accounting for their crimes against humanity – the list of which is long and well known).

Hope you are having a fine Sunday, cd4biden!

Is this about access that Turkey provides the US, do you think? I see no other reason for the US to continue to allow Erdogan to do his evil.

                  August 28, 2016 at 2:48 pm

Remember, Turkish forces were supposed to be going in to Syria to fight Daesh. But there they were, engaging in combat at Amarna with the SDF, which is backed by the US Department of Defense, which has 200 US special operations forces embedded with it, and which had itself taken heavy losses kicking Daesh out of Manbij.
These actions help answer the question I posed Thursday, about whether the Turkish incursion is really aimed at stopping the Kurds from consolidating their mini-state of Rojava in northern Syria rather than mainly targeting Daesh.
                  Kurdish media is saying,
“Furthermore, the Turkish-backed [fundamentalist] Sultan Murad brigade captured three SDF fighters in the Turkmen Yusuf Beg village, publishing a video beating them on camera, calling them ‘PKK dogs’.
Turkey sees the leftist Kurdish YPG militia in Syria as a part of the Kurdistan Workers Party or PKK in Turkey. The latter is a terrorist organization according to the US, but the YPG is considered a US ally.

I think its a big cluster.

Trump, on the other hand, has no official debate team, and is apparently skipping the policy prep and rehearsals so he can rely on his natural talents and showmanship. What preparation he is doing, at least right now, consists of hosting Sunday get-togethers with friends, advisors, and family to test pitches and zingers over cheeseburgers and soda.

For those of you wondering why Clinton/Kaine have switched their stance on TPP, here is part of an interview the other night with Tim Kaine on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Colbert asks him that question about 5 minutes into the 9 minute clip. I think more info and clarity is needed, but it is a start as to why.

    • 121 desertflower
      August 28, 2016 at 3:02 pm

So its the enforcement aspect of a couple of things. THEN THEY NEED TO SAY THAT, and not make it sound like the entire thing is a pile of crap! What they SHOULD say, is that they believe that TPP is basically a good deal for America but that have concerns about a enforcement issues in a couple of cases. Would that be SO HARD?? They could plainly explain what their concerns are and how they intend to deal with those issues. Instead, they say they’re against TPP lock, stock and barrel…and that isn’t right.

Thanks for bringing this hear…maybe someone could tweet them and point that out. You don’t need to throw the baby out with the bath water!

    hat tip – POU

The GOP’s Stealth War Against Voters
The Crosscheck program is a response to the imaginary menace of mass voter fraud.
By Greg Palast 4 days ago

When Donald Trump claimed, “the election’s going to be rigged,” he wasn’t entirely wrong. But the threat was not, as Trump warned, from Americans committing the crime of “voting many, many times.” What’s far more likely to undermine democracy in November is the culmination of a decade-long Republican effort to disenfranchise voters under the guise of battling voter fraud. The latest tool: Election officials in more than two dozen states have compiled lists of citizens whom they allege could be registered in more than one state – thus potentially able to cast multiple ballots – and eligible to be purged from the voter rolls.

The data is processed through a system called the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck Program, which is being promoted by a powerful Republican operative, and its lists of potential duplicate voters are kept confidential. But Rolling Stone obtained a portion of the list and the names of 1 million targeted voters. According to our analysis, the Crosscheck list disproportionately threatens solid Democratic constituencies: young, black, Hispanic and Asian-American voters – with some of the biggest possible purges underway in Ohio and North Carolina, two crucial swing states with tight Senate races.

As a business stratedy, Trump has mastered the art of tiring out his creditors with his niggling etc so that they give up or settle for peanuts, then he claims they never won the case. IOW, he’s been using the judicial system in a nefarious way all his adult life. God, he’s despicable! 😦
