Ramen noodles are overtaking tobacco as the most popular currency in US prisons, according a new study released on Monday.

A new report by Michael Gibson-Light, a doctoral candidate in the University of Arizona’s school of sociology, found the decline in quality and quantity of food available in prisons due to cost-cutting has made ramen noodles “[Ramen] is easy to get and it’s high in calories,” Gibson-Light said. “A lot of them, they spend their days working and exercising and they don’t have enough energy to do these things. From there it became more a story, why ramen in particular.”

Gibson-Light interviewed close to 60 inmates over the course of a year at one state prison as part of a wider study on prison labor. He did not identify the prison to protect the confidentiality of the inmates. He found that the instant soup has surpassed tobacco as the most prized currency at the prison. He also analyzed other nationwide investigations that he says found a trend towards using ramen noodles in exchanges.“One way or another, everything in prison is about money,” one soft-spoken prisoner named Rogers said in the report. “Soup is money in here. It’s sad but true.”

It’s not only prisons, the SNAP program and Senior Diing programs have been gutted and they keep changing the menus here for the Seniors. They have cut meat portions down from 5oz to2.5oz now. Thank you RWNJ for cutting the food program. I really dislike these people. Enough of a rant.

Why “Obama’s Katrina” Never Sticks But Won’t Die

    https://newrepublic.com/article/136182/obamas-katrina-never-sticks-wont-die

Unencumbered ideologically, and unwilling to allow a natural disaster to unravel his presidency, Obama rebuilt FEMA after Bush left office. His agency has been praised everywhere it has been deployed, by Republican and Democratic governors alike.

Obama can thus entrust his FEMA director, Craig Fugate, to respond competently to a situation like the flooding Louisiana, and to not be blindsided by predictable disasters, like hurricanes. Obama didn’t end his Martha’s Vineyard vacation early last week because his emergency manager is working ably to respond to the crisis, and Louisiana’s Democratic governor, John Bel Edwards, said Obama would disrupt disaster relief efforts if he traveled to Louisiana. (Obama is headed to Baton Rouge on Tuesday.)
    .
    .
Republicans could rehabilitate the public image problem they inflicted upon themselves in 2005 by committing to managing bureaucracies effectively and giving federal agencies the resources they need to succeed. But they don’t particularly want to do that; and in any case it’s much easier to pretend that every disaster Obama manages is effectively his latest Katrina.

    • 28 Ladyhawke
      August 22, 2016 at 4:23 pm

Taken as a whole, the Republican Party has, ever since its takeover by the conservative movement, done more than any foreign ideologues can ever hope to do to erode faith in the goodness of the American establishment. They’ve done this partly by being very bad at governing, but my focus here is on their messaging. During much of the latter Bush Era, the Republicans controlled the presidency and both houses of Congress, and they had a friendly Supreme Court. They ought to have been able to argue that under their leadership the federal government was finally functioning as it should. But, even if this had been plausible based on their record, they could never have done it because their whole machine is geared to deride the tyrannical inefficiency of government. What they did instead was to blame their own failures on the very institutions they controlled, and on the media for never giving them a fair shake.
      .
      .
Our institutions are not fatally flawed. They are good institutions that functioned well in the past and served as a model for others. But the public has lost faith in them, including the media, because the Republicans wanted them to lose faith in them. The public has lost faith in them because the Republicans have run these institutions so poorly, including their media organs.

    White privilege has some drawbacks…

Ryan Lochte is down three sponsors. Speedo USA will donate a $50,000 portion of Lochte’s fee to Save The Children, a global charity partner of Speedo USA’s parent company, for children in Brazil,” the company told E! News in a statement, adding, “While we have enjoyed a winning relationship with Ryan for over a decade and he has been an important member of the Speedo team, we cannot condone behavior that is counter to the values this brand has long stood for. Red flags were raised after Lochte’s name and image were recently removed from Olympic endorser page on Ralph Lauren’s website. In a statement to E! News, the fashion label said Monday, “Ralph Lauren continues to proudly sponsor the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Team and the values that its athletes embody. Ralph Lauren’s endorsement agreement with Ryan Lochte was specifically in support of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and the company will not be renewing his contract.” “Syneron Candela will be ending its partnership with Ryan Lochte. We hold our employees to high standards, and we expect the same of our business partners,”

Does that include DNC abd RNC?

Even if it doesn’t… These fundraising totals are way down from what Obama and Romney raised in 2012.

Both were over 1 billion raised.

I am at a complete loss to understand why Hillary’s “emails” are being minutely examined by everyone & no other member of any administration has ever faced the same. They concentrated on Benghazi for years & emails seem to be the replacement. The vicious, spiteful lies just go on and on and on. They have nothing else – their nominee can’t even campaign, & running the local hate committee is even beyond him. The GOP is dead.

I know, 99, but she didn’t follow the rules and gave them an opening and here we are. I am sick to death of this, but they will not let it die. And frankly, when it came up I was pretty shocked to discover that her emails were not “captured” in the normal course because of the server. Anything you look at with PBO’s name on it has a disclaimer that it will be archived as federal records. And it was two years after she left the State department that she finally went back and attempted to retrieve all those emails that should have been saved. I have no idea what she was thinking but she is paying an incredible price for it. That’s not to say that Dems aren’t held to a different standard, they are. All those emails dumped by the Bush WH have never been an issue because the Dems didn’t make them an issue. But it in the end, it doesn’t change the fact that she gave them this opening, and it was incredibly poor judgment to do so.

Fifteen years before she went to the State Department, every law firm and corporation in the US knew that we had to change our practices with the rise of emails. They had to be preserved in accordance with standard record retention policies. It is the reason this just blows my mind. If you worked in corporate America, you knew LONG before she went to State that this would not be acceptable.

        August 22, 2016 at 6:25 pm

Has ANYONE else had their emails poured over by justice and the FBI in this fashion – seems she should have deleted the lot rather than attempt to do the right thing. Hillary is always accused of “not following the rules” – when she does the same more than any GOPer on the planet. I think you are being a typical democrat & apologising for anything not 100% as the GOP wants it to be.

She does not deserve the sh!t the media and the GOP throw & it is time ALL democrats repeated this over and over – rather than excuse the GOP for what they do.

PBO is a one in a billion perfect. He had to be that way – a black man getting to the white house couldn’t be anything else.

        • 72 FoxfireTX
          August 22, 2016 at 7:10 pm

No, they haven’t but it goes back to the point discussed a couple of weeks ago. The GOP has all of these organizations that they fund to keep up this endless harassment, while the Dems do not.

You are free to accuse me of being a typical Democrat, but I can tell you that any lawyer at any legitimate law firm in the US would have been fired for doing what she did. She is a lawyer and should have known better. That doesn’t make what the GOP is doing “right” but it does make it foreseeable.

And I am not excusing the Rs for doing this. I despise each and every one of them. And it is a travesty for this country if Trump gets by without releasing his tax returns. It will set a precedent that is going to have far reaching consequences, much as Bernie’s failure in this regard.

This is not Benghazi. I cheered her on and was thrilled with her testimony and how bad she made them look. And it is not fair, it simply was foreseeable. Frankly, more than anything I simply am baffled about this whole thing and why she did not see this coming. I only hope that she has learned from it and doesn’t make similar mistakes in her administration.

I don’t “accuse” anyone of anything on TOD Foxfire – I always enjoy your posts. I’m just venting that we seem to always allow that the dems may have “brought this on themselves”. Maybe Hillary should have known better, maybe not – but every last detail of everything she has ever done is non stop studied by the GOP. Trump is now screaming about the Foundation which has done more good in a week than he has done in the total of his 70 years.

She could make a million mistakes in her administration and still run rings around any GOP administration of the past 50 years.

Apparently Amy Robach does not know which decade this is, or is it that she is secretly part of the DT crowd. WTF is this about referring to A-A’s as “colored people”? Isn’t she barely 40 or so? I live in the South and I have not heard anyone, Black, white or whatever use this descriptor, outside of the tradition of the NAACP, since I was a little girl in the 60’s. And I don’t buy it that she was trying to say “people of color.” Wonder how Robin Roberts feels about her friend now.

Trump casts inner cities as ‘war zones’ in pitch to minority voters
    August 22, 2016, 08:42 pm

Donald Trump cast inner cities as “war zones” where blacks and Hispanics live in constant fear for their lives as he took his “law and order” campaign to minority voters in Ohio on Monday.

Speaking at a rally in Akron, Trump painted a bleak picture of inner city life and blamed Democrats for what he described as a festering epidemic of murder and violence in crumbling minority communities across the nation.

When you hear the stuff coming out of the Trump rallies, it really makes me wonder who these people are that support him. For most of my adult life, I have lived at the edge of big city or one of the closest suburbs. I walk in these cities at night after concerts, dinners, bars, etc. Don’t any of the Trump supporters go out at night? Where and when have they been shot? It is just crazy. There always have been areas to avoid by yourself but that has existed forever. So what do they think is different now? I simply cannot understand people buying his rhetoric. This idea that all of our cities are war zones is laughable, and sad. But then I guess Trump just sits up in Trump Tower tweeting every night so what the hell does he know. Since I moved to TX, I am far more afraid of all these big trucks with their crazy guns at any time of the day or night than I am of walking on the street at night.

As for Melania Trump, I hope she will honor her husband’s promise to hold a news conference to clear up the discrepancies in her immigration records/status. If it turns out that Melania violated immigration laws, before she was married to Donald Trump, she must punished according to Law.

It seemed having the smaller stature and softer voice and mannerisms just did not match up. Maybe if I saw the whole thing I would feel differently.
