One of the clearest, best, crystallizations of what’s at stake in this election that I have ever seen.

    From Kay over at BJ:

I agree with you to a certain extent but I also think it’s naive to imagine they’ll just give up. They will lose the Supreme Court if they lose this election and there really is a fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives – it’s profound. They want to undo all of the New Deal precedents. That’s the goal. It will be a very different country if we go back to pre-Civil War. It really will. The House that FDR Built is the house we all live in. Besides all the bullshit and politics, there really is a huge ideological difference. They know that. That’s what’s at stake.

They are not going to surrender. That’s a pipedream.

    • August 17, 2016 at 11:53 am

They are not going to surrender. That’s a pipe dream…

This is a issue that we as Dems must understand …that they will NEVER surrender….if they lose they just get back up to fight another day…if they win…they seek to strengthen their victory…this is one thing that we must mimic as well…not only must we organize to Win and Win big…but we must EVER Defend our victories and keep moving forward towards that More Perfect Union because those forces that see to enslave us never give up!!!

I agree pf. To think that Trump and his minions will just disappear on Nov 9th is foolish. Like BS he will be screaming the election was rigged for weeks afterward, and knowing DT he will probably file 100s of lawsuits against everyone he can think of.

We must continue to stay organized and start now with preparing for the next election by identifying potential candidates for seats up and down the ticket. And we must train leaders and community organizers, and support those groups working to GOTV.

Check out movement2016.org for dozens of groups in every state that work 24/7/365 on voter issues.

And GM TOD. GGail congrats on first. Hugs to Mtmarilyn, Yardarm, Chips, and anyone else who needs a little love today.

    Hi TODers,

Hello Nerdy. Thanks for all you do, always.

Hey guys, Please help me pass these links around. My two nephews and their families were displaced temporarily in the flood. They have been in a shelter since Sunday. They may go home today, but one nephew and his wife, both had their cars damaged by the flood waters. They have both not been able to go to work. They have a two year old daughter.

The other nephew and his girl friend are caring for the girlfriend’s two younger brother. They don’t know the conditions of their own cars. For him, his boss has been picking him up and taking him to work and back to the shelter.

We were lucky that they all live on top floors, and so we are expecting no property damage to their dwelling. But just getting their lives back together is going to be hard. So yesterday, I worked all day on a Go Fund Me page with my limited computer abilities. Any way I got it finished and broadcast it last evening. I also have a Facebook page that I haven’t used in years, but I activated it solely to do this. I am not well versed on Facebook, either, so you will probably see a lot of redundancy.

In any case, I am asking that you please help me share the link in the hopes that I can raise some funds to help them.

    The links are here:

    Thank you so much everyone.

Hi Kate, here’s info they can use to register for FEMA assistance
Anyone in Louisiana with damage from the continuing severe storms and floods that began Aug. 11 may register two ways:

      Online at DisasterAssistance.gov

      By calling 800-621-3362

People who use TTY may call 800-462-7585

Those who use 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS) may call 800-621-3362.

Survivors only need to register once. These toll-free telephone numbers are operating from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.

FEMA never charges fees to apply for or receive federal disaster assistance. State and federal officials encourage disaster survivors to be alert for scams and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately.

Assistance provided by FEMA for homeowners and renters can include grants for rent, temporary housing and home repairs to their primary residence, as well as other serious disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses or funeral and burial costs.

Trump campaign undergoes (another) major staff shake-up
    08/17/16 08:00 AM
    By Steve Benen

In April, in the face of broad criticisms about his campaign’s direction, Donald Trump shook up his leadership team and implemented a “massive restructuring.” Two months later, in June, the Republican presidential candidate made another major staffing change, ousting campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.

Liz Cheney appears to be on her way to Congress
    08/17/16 09:12 AM
    By Steve Benen

If you think what’s missing from Congress is a member of the Cheney family, you’ll be pleased with yesterday’s primary results out of Wyoming.
Liz Cheney has won Wyoming’s Republican primary for U.S. House. Cheney beat seven challengers for a chance at the job her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, first won 40 years ago.

Her campaign focused on national security and rolling back federal regulations affecting Wyoming’s beleaguered coal industry.
Incumbent Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R), who has served as Wyoming’s sole representative for the last eight years, is stepping down at the end of this Congress. There was a large GOP primary field, which Cheney ended up leading with relative ease.

Yesterday’s results don’t guarantee Cheney’s place in Congress, but given Wyoming’s status as a ruby-red state, it’s widely assumed that the winner of the Republican primary is well positioned to win the U.S. House seat in the fall.

What’s especially notable about Cheney’s victory is the degree to which the former Fox News pundit and State Department official had to undo the damage done by her last congressional bid.

… He further clarified that “the facts did not support a recommendation to prosecute her or others within the scope of the investigation for gross negligence.”

This will surely not deter the spittle-flecked Trump supporters out there shouting “Lock her up!” But for those who encounter people who are only marginally paying attention, the two takeaways here are as follows:

Clinton did not send emails with information marked classified in them. She received them.

There was no intent on her part — or her staff’s — to share classified information with people not entitled to see it.

This letter appears to be intended as a slap back at Republicans who are using this bogus investigation for nothing more than cynical political gain. As if a mere letter from the FBI would stop that.

Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he is yet again shaking up his staff, promoting former campaign pollster Kellyanne Conway to campaign manager.

Trump hired Conway in early July to serve as a “data and messaging expert” and to help his campaign woo women, a necessary effort given that national polls consistently show that seven in ten women have an unfavorable opinion of the Republican nominee. Conway counts among her previous clients 2012 Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin who famously claimed that women can’t get pregnant during a rape because their bodies “shut the whole thing down.”

A former Washington lawyer who most recently ran a pro-Ted Cruz super PAC, Conway brings experience to the campaign in advising men on how to talk about women. She has said that her role as polling strategist has been to soften Trump and to move him away from flinging insults at women. She frequently appears on TV to declare that despite the abysmal polls, Trump will in fact win over female voters with his commitment to securing the borders and creating jobs.

Unhear that misogynist crap he’s been spewing for the last year! Remember, the man wants to be himself! When they show you, believe them! He’s still a pig!

A break from the craziness and the tragedy: OMG! I just discovered Hiplet! A dance school out of Chicago, among its repertoire, includes a new style that combines hip-hop and ballet. The creator is choreographer, teacher, and dance company director, Homer Bryant. The girls are enpointe doing moves that will make Balanchine turn in his grave, while secretly wishing that he had created the style. I love Bryant’s approach to teaching.
Check it out on YouTube (I would be here longer than I need trying to figure out how to post a link myself).

    America’s top colleges 2016

The No. 1 FORBES Top College 2016 is Stanford University , followed by Williams College and Princeton University . The highest ranking public school is the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The University of Notre Dame is the premier Midwestern institution and Davidson College lands as the best school in the South.

The FORBES 9th annual Top Colleges ranking speaks directly to three important trends:
    The emerging clout-flip from the Northeast Establishment to new guard West Coast schools;
    The contest between small student-centric liberal arts colleges and juggernaut STEM-oriented research universities;
The disproportionately high number of old, private schools as the best return on investment.

GM Dr. Bob, know you’re off to do important stuff now, but this is how sheltered I’ve been — learned to swim at the downtown San Diego YMCA when I was about 5 or 6.

My instructor was a young African American man, so didn’t know about the abhorrent relationship between African Americans and swimming pools until I saw the tweets last week about Dorothy Dandridge, one of the most drop-dead gorgeous actresses of Hollywood’s “Golden Era.”

      • August 17, 2016 at 12:59 pm

Thank you arapaho for your comment. From restrooms, to water fountains, to swimming pools, to ….. the ugliness toward POC that I witnessed throughout my youth has only made me more empathetic, though I will never truly comprehend the scale of damage to the quality of life of POC.

Same with me, Bobfr. I have been told I am blessed with a strong sense of justice and this makes my blood boil, helping me be empathetic as well; yet it is nothing compared to what POC around me have had to go through. I stand up and for my fellow human beings whenever I can but it often feels so inadequate.

    via bj, a good read.

Meet Hillary Clinton’s Inner Circle, the Queenmakers Who Won’t Rest Until She’s President.

In her runs for the Senate and the presidency, Clinton has needed pallets of money, and she has always managed to rake it in—over the past 20 years, she has collected enough to finance the government of a middle-sized African nation for a few years. Men have been the biggest givers by far, but her 2016 campaign has set a record in female political fundraising: As of June, she had raised a higher percentage of her campaign funds from women than any major party presidential candidate in recent history, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. And the total amount of money from women is higher for her than for any other candidate this year.

Her female donors cannot approach the wallet wallop of the major financiers of American politics, men like Haim Saban, Sheldon Adelson or the Koch brothers. But they have one thing in common with those mega-donors: They are single-issue donors. Their goal is to elect more women.
