‘This Is What A Feminist Looks Like’

Barack Obama: “This Is What a Feminist Looks Like”

There are a lot of tough aspects to being President. But there are some perks too. Meeting extraordinary people across the country. Holding an office where you get to make a difference in the life of our nation. Air Force One. But perhaps the greatest unexpected gift of this job has been living above the store. for the past seven and a half years, that commute has been reduced to 45 seconds—the time it takes to walk from my living room to the Oval Office. As a result, I’ve been able to spend a lot more time watching my daughters grow up into smart, funny, kind, wonderful young women. The progress we’ve made in the past 100 years, 50 years, and, yes, even the past eight years has made life significantly better for my daughters than it was for my grandmothers. And I say that not just as President but also as a feminist. Now, the most important people in my life have always been women. I was raised by a single mom, who spent much of her career working to empower women in developing countries.

I watched as my grandmother, who helped raise me, worked her way up at a bank only to hit a glass ceiling. I’ve seen how Michelle has balanced the demands of a busy career and raising a family. Like many working mothers, she worried about the expectations and judgments of how she should handle the trade-offs, knowing that few people would question my choices. So we need to break through these limitations. We need to keep changing the attitude that raises our girls to be demure and our boys to be assertive, that criticizes our daughters for speaking out and our sons for shedding a tear. We need to keep changing the attitude that punishes women for their sexuality and rewards men for theirs. We need to keep changing the attitude that permits the routine harassment of women, whether they’re walking down the street or daring to go online. We need to keep changing the attitude that teaches men to feel threatened by the presence and success of women. As a parent, helping your kids to rise above these constraints is a constant learning process. Michelle and I have raised our daughters to speak up when they see a double standard or feel unfairly judged based on their gender or race—or when they notice that happening to someone else. It’s important for them to see role models out in the world who climb to the highest levels of whatever field they choose. And yes, it’s important that their dad is a feminist, because now that’s what they expect of all men.

p.s. Thank you, NW, for those wonderful photos of the Obama Girls. They have grown up so beautifully.

Privilege is when your immigration papers are a one day story and your husband has made building a wall the center of his campaign.

Thanks media. Let’s get back to Hillary’s email

    Congrats jojo 🙂

Thank you so much, NW, for featuring one of the most important accounts of how profoundly complete a person Barack Obama is!!!

The notion that anyone can write an honest sentence with Trump and economics in it and not castigate Trump is beyond all reality.

Ivanka Trump has vocally embraced pro-family corporate policies while stumping for her father on the campaign trail, but the company that designs her own clothing line offers no paid maternity leave.

A fashion designer for the G-III Apparel Group told the Washington Post in a piece published Monday that she received 12 weeks of unpaid leave when she became pregnant in 2015.

“It’s hard enough emotionally to come back to work right after having a baby,” the unnamed designer, who said she is a registered Republican and worked for G-III for four years, told the newspaper. “But to know you’re returning to a company that doesn’t value your choice to be a mother makes it harder.”

But she’s a “registered Rethuglican”, so why is it so hard to believe when you vote for a party that does not believe I family leave?

I hope the NPR radio interview of Mr. Khan posts because it is so heart felt that even the interviewer sound like she was crying or trying not to. I listened to it on the way to meet my friend and fellow TOD'er GGail. I was teary eyed and my heart went out to him so have tissues close by.

    GA TODville.

Have mentioned before that PBO is passing the baton for world leadership to another North American, PM Trudeau.

Seems apparent that they have a nurturing and good-natured relationship — you can see that PM Trudeau has such admiration for PBO, and Sophie Trudeau views Michelle Obama as a soul-mate.

Posted this here last month after NATO Summit, but worth repeating (very moving article):

And whose handwriting does this remind you of? (rhetorical question)

Somebody needs to set Trump up for something like that. Schedule an interview, on camera, one-on-one, 5 minutes after one of his teleprompter speeches. See what he understands about what he just read.

Which would be zero, of course.

      Where’s the media?

  14. August 8, 2016 at 5:38 pm

How was Trump big speech today? I missed it and glad I did.

That’s great GGail – I am always amazed with all the GOTV stories at TOD cause in my world you have to vote. Only once, in my over 40 years of voting have I received a call from a political campaign. Were you calling within California – or for another state?

Martha Raddatz seriously needs an intervention for her obsession with the three miserable mismarked Clinton emails which she claims, “resonate” with American voters.

On ABC’s This Week, Martha Raddatz interviewed former acting CIA director Michael Morell …After Morell confirmed his contention that Trump is now nothing more than an unwitting agent for Vladimir Putin, Raddatz let that drop in favor of what she considers a more pressing issue for the nation: Benghazi and the emails.

Morell then made a statement which should have been a Breaking News banner over at ABC.

MORELL: But I think there’s a bigger issue here. I think there’s a bigger issue here, right?

I worked with her for four years very closely when she was secretary of state and I was at the CIA. I provided her — personally provided her some of the most sensitive information that the Central Intelligence Agency has.

***She never misused it. She always protected it. I would trust her with the crown jewels of the United States government. And, more importantly, I would trust her with the future security of the country and the future security of my kids.***

Almost every athlete at the 2016 Olympic Games will have an interesting backstory, but Yusra Mardini’s is more extraordinary than most.

She and her sister are responsible for helping to save the lives of 20 people, including their own, after jumping off their sinking dinghy into the Aegean Sea and pushing their boat to land.

I don’t usually comment on Chris Hayes – but – he mentioned today the difference between the ad buys of Hillary & Trump.
The latter pronounces that he doesn’t need ads because he gets free air time – but just maybe – this is another reason that Hillary is increasing her lead in the polls. There is a reason politicians pay to advertise – it works.

    • August 8, 2016 at 10:02 pm

Ads require focus and discipline, a real message that is coherent and thoughtful. Trump isn’t capable of any of that and doesn’t seem to possess the skill to hire anyone who does. So he sits around believing that blowing hot air in various free forums means he’s delivering a message. But the only thing he’s delivering to the general masses is the obvious fact that he’s a hideous mess. He really doesn’t have a campaign to speak of.

So true meta – apparently zero ground game as well – which is a problem when folks aren’t so keen on voting for him.

The media has swung from being his biggest fan as well. They seem to have reached “both sides” at the minute.

I have noticed some are using Donald’s favorite phrase Many say… Then they put some nonsensical words together towards mocking him. I wish there was a tweet bomb using the many people say, some say, and such using Donald’s words like they did with Melania’s plagiarism. It might get to him. Baiting? Hee hee.
