    Good Afternoon TOD,

I just cannot see how Trump gets that traditional “bump” in the polls that most candidates get after their convention. This has been the most ridiculous side show I’ve ever seen. What little I’ve watched of this mess has been just awful. Maybe I’m biased but as pathetic as I thought Romney’s convention was this hate fest tops them all in the worse ever category. Of course the media will characterize Trump tonight as the best orator known to mankind just to convince the public that he is credible because they are invested in a horse race. It will be interesting to contrast what I anticipate as an inspirational, motivational convention next week. Hillary needs to pick a really good VP on Friday to give her campaign an additional boost. I want to be surprised (in a good way) with this pick

    • July 21, 2016 at 4:44 pm

And I hope it is NOT Tim Kaine.

Me either but all the pundits say she is leaning in this direction. She needs youth and vitality with her on this campaign and although he is quite capable he just doesn’t inspire me at all. PBO picked VP Joe because he had experience in the Senate and Foreign Affairs. She doesn’t need either of those qualities in her pick because she comes with those experiences. She needs to rock the vote with her pick. He’ll be fine if he is the pick but I hope there is someone out there that we haven’t considered.

After 7 1/2 years of having a young, progressive, creative President, it’s gonna be hard to “fire up” the young adults if you present them with two “old” candidates. I’m in my 60’s and I feel that way. We’re gonna need an Administration that will be able to keep up with the swift evolving technology. We’ve become spoiled by UNOWHO. 🙂

This is exactly what my millenial aged children expressed at the beginning of the primary. Makes me think of Trudeau in Canada. There’s a lot to be said for a young VP pick.

Donna, if Trump stands on his feet and manages to read his teleprompter speech without veering off into his own dark mind, then, yes, he will be called Reagan’s descendant as an orator. The rest of that mess of a convention has been a hideous descent into the dark heart of a party that has lost all morality and political mooring. No matter what Hillary does or how professional and inspirational a convention she presents, she will be vilified and ridiculed by the media. Today I met with a group of Democrats who talked about the message the GOP and the media is sending to American women about their worth. It was interesting to see the difference in reaction among the men and the women. The men didn’t get it, while the women felt that the life long resentment many women feel at sexist double standards was being awakened by the Trump/GOP treatment of Hillary.

We have such a wonderful trajectory just by keeping going with what the Obamas have set in motion. We CAN keep moving in the respect, empower, include direction and we will. I know we will. Those who are abusive in their power over mentality will be decompensating for awhile but that’s just it. They can’t keep the veneer over their inner insecurity any longer and now we get to see how really weak and scared their view of the world is. We have to fend off the disappointeds on the left that are entitled themselves, fend off the machine politics of the old Dixiecrat mentality which we are, and then fend off the cowardly and abusive right wing in all their fascist bravado. We will, we are and the world is going to be the better for it.

No you can’t NCLB. There was a time when there was enough common sense among Republicans to be repelled by the Arpaio’s of the world. That GOP died from greed, corruption and a willingness to put party and power over decency, morality and love of country.

I don’t know if Tim Kaine is going to be the VP choice or not. But I would like to say a word in his defense. He was a top tier consideration for President Obama. He is a highly regarded member of the Senate and has been a good surrogate for Hillary. He is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and he is fluent in Spanish, hence can actively campaign bilingually in the Latino communities. He is ready for prime time. If he was highly considered by Pres Obama and by Hillary, the guy must have something going for him. I recall how many Dems, especially on the Left criticized Pres Obama for choosing Joe Biden because he was too establishment, too boring and all that. He has proven to be a tremendous VP and partner in governance for our President. Tim Kaine may prove to be likewise.

“You campaign in poetry and govern in prose”

I agree that Tim is quite qualified to be VP and potentially President. That was never my concern. The problem with Hillary is that she if following in the footsteps of one of the greatest “campaigners” of all time in President Obama. Bill, your speaking like the informed, engaged voter that you are. Trust me, most people are not and especially Democrats are not. They have to be inspired and handheld to the polls. PBO, FLOTUS and E. Warren will help with this if he picks Kaine but it would be great if there was someone who could join this ticket with her that will inspire those not very informed voters to be excited about voting this Fall.

I am happy that he is on the foreign relations committee. This will help him during the debates.

      • July 21, 2016 at 6:15 pm

I don’t know if it means anything, but Tim Kaine is on the list of speakers, as is Sen. Warren. Julian Castro and Tom Perez wouldn’t be, since they are cabinet members.

        • July 21, 2016 at 6:16 pm

Of course I am wondering also if these short lists are misdirections mean to heighten the surprise factor.

            GA Bill R.

In the last couple of days have seen tweets speculating that Cory Booker or Charlie Crist (i.e., Florida announcement by HRC), but it’s all speculation, so who knows.

Meta’s tweeted her favorite candidate as Tom Perez — would be a good choice because I think Perez would actively engage clean energy companies to places like West Virginia where coal industry employees could become skilled in clean energy projects. I truly doubt that any coal miner *wants* his son or daughter to work in those claustrophobic, dangerous conditions, but there’s few local opportunities for their children to work and raise a family close to home.

Also, one of the provisions that the Verizon strike accomplished was to return Customer Service jobs back to the US (Verizon is hell from a customer service perspective, and speaking to someone in a different country is frustrating for customer with a problem needing to be resolved). So Perez could be a #mythbuster as PBO described in Elkhart IN earlier this Spring.

              July 21, 2016 at 7:12 pm

Perez would be my pick too, although I’d be dancing hard if Warren, Booker & Castro. In the end, I’d be fine with anybody HRC picks – though I might be less enthusiastic by some of the other prospects I’ve heard.

I heard about this. If Chump gets in, we are heading back to the 50’s or worse. Black & Latino Lives definitely won’t matter. Republican’s are such a hateful bunch. And the evangelicals are some of the worse. This repeal would open the door to blatant discrimination. I hope that the DNC will show a human side. Not call for the killing of candidates etc….

I’ve been saying that Tom Perez is my pick for VP. I think he’s a great guy with enormous abilities. But after watching HRC on Charlie Rose the other night, she said her main criteria is to make sure her VP could be POTUS on day one. I then thought this would seem to weaken chances for Perez, as he doesn’t really have FP credentials that I know of.

Here’s an article that echoes that feeling but goes on anyway to discuss his many strengths and why he’d be a great choice:

I still hope he’s her choice.

Ok, just read the leaked speech. I hope the doom and gloom statistics are fact checked on the spot since the press got it ahead. The I’m with you-The American People does one up the I am with her slogan. I hate Donald Trump. His even being on the ballot for Prez is scary. The part about we do not let people into our country that push hate, _______, and _______. I forgot the second two things said but I am aware I should not be Prez, just noticed when I read it that the three words fit Donald Trump perfectly so I agree HE should not be allowed in our country.

GE everyone and Nerdy! Not listening to the speeches, just can’t stomach them but following here and on twitter. A couple of things.
The one name that seems missing from the list is Claire McCaskill. She has been a great surrogate for Hillary and I was surprised not to see her name on the list.

Second, Josh said the other day PBO would be happy with Tim Kaine as VP, and apparently Bill Clinton is pushing him as well. Not thrilling, but I wasn’t sure about Joe in 2008 either. What the partnerhship between PBO and Joe has shown me is just how effective a great team in the WH can be, and that is personal between the two people. So whatever Hillary decides will be fine with me. Hopefully she will be there for 8 years and needs someone is she is comfortable with. With her huge emphasis on “readiness” to fill the office, I’ve also wondered if she is a little concerned about her own health with that concussion and blood clot she had a few years back. If so, that probably leaves out a good share of the names.

In any event, I just want this GOP thing to be over and on to an optimistic, forward looking, DEM convention!

I like Tim Kaine. People forget he was the first sitting governor to endorse Sen. Barack Obama for President in 2007. He was an excellent and popular governor of Virginia, which he delivered for President Obama in 2008. Before that, Virginia hadn’t voted for a Democratic presidential nominee since 1964. Sen. Kaine is both knowledgeable in foreign and domestic affairs and he is very fluent in Spanish.
