My favorite comment on YouTube for this video:

“Imagine (President) Obama watching this in his Oval Office with complete heart eyes for his wife when Joe walks in and he pretends he’s like makin laws or sumthing presdentially”

By the way, the commenter’s name is Bella. Hmmm! 😄

Morning all. Back in 2004 when GOP convention goers put tea bags on their hats and bandages on their faces to mock war hero, John Kerry, I thought the Republican Party had sunk as low as it could go. The new levels of depravity and bigotry we’ve seen this year make 2004 seem tame by comparison. Even the stupid 2012 “You Built It” theme and Eastwood’s chair were benign compared to this. I’ve been so repulsed by the raw, rabid hatred at this convention that it’s actually making me sick. It’s as if someone opened the gates of hell and the ugly slime oozed out. It’s frightening to think how many people we pass in the street may actually think like these creatures and approve their behavior. If there has been one human statement or one expression of compassion and empathy (not stolen from Michelle Obama) I’ve yet to hear of it.

Let’s hope the hatefest has turned off a bunch of independent voters and wised up some Bernie diehards to vote for Clinton.

Jackie, so well stated. I have not watched any of it, just cannot stomach this kind of hatred. It is beyond the pale, and scares me that a significant portion of the electorate would participate in this. It makes me think there really are TWO countries, one filled with the optimism and hope–while acknowledging problems–exemplified by the First Family we love, and one that is consumed by hatred and bile. I do know which one is mine.

Police officers have problems, why isn’t they angry about the bad cops who make the good cops look bad. Why are you angry at the President or those protesting? The police officers feel that people are against them, well you have something in common with the black community. They feel that police officers are against them.

Couple of dumb questions about conventions
    1. What happens during the day? Are there speeches or do folks just mill around plotting events?
    2. During the RNC the media is 100% focused on the GOP. Interviews are all to GOPers, video of GOPers, guests are all GOPers etc etc. Do they do the same thing next week – or do they invite republicans to talk about the DNC?

    • 50 Linda
      July 21, 2016 at 10:15 am

      1. During the day they hold meetings and seminars that no one shows up to.

      2. My guess is that Republicans will out number Dems on the cable shows during the Dem Convention.

      • 51 99ts
        July 21, 2016 at 10:32 am

Thanks Linda – 2. was my guess as well. Can’t help showing the bias. I didn’t have a clue about 1. I really don’t see the benefit of 4 days to announce the person that everyone knows has won the nomination – although I expect the dem campaign to talk more about policy and less time hating on the opposition. Nate had some figures showing Hillary was mentioned twice as much as Trump on each day of the convention.

        • July 21, 2016 at 11:03 am

I volunteered at the 2008 DNC and some of the seminars were actually quite good. I got a chance to see and hear FLOTUS and Richard Holbrooke, for example. Lots of partying going on, sponsored activities. It’s also about a bunch of people networking, schmoozing, lining up contacts for future business/influence. The people who staff are very busy with organizing the millions of details that make the whole thing work.

thanks meta – 2008 must have been wonderful to be in the midst of such an amazing happening. Don’t think the RNC of 2016 has much to write home about – not to mention the lack of organising!

            • July 21, 2016 at 11:10 am

It was an absolutely phenomenal experience, one that I’ll never forget. Watching Barack Obama come out and accept the nomination was one of the greatest thrills of my life. Just impossible to describe emotionally and over the top!!

I didn’t follow your election until after the 2008 primaries – but watching PBO at the rally in Missouri (St Louis) was the most amazing thing I saw in the 2008 election. It surpassed the election night celebration in my memory. I can almost imagine how you were at the nomination – just almost, no doubt you had to be there to see it. Thank you for the memories

    From Redstate about last night:

In fact, in response to the news that Cruz was going to make a speech that did not explicitly endorse him, Trump intentionally chose to escalate the situation by leaking the news to friendly delegations and instructing them to boo Cruz to make this a bigger deal that it otherwise would have been. If Trump’s delegates had not booed and caused a ruckus, but instead had remained silent or applauded at Cruz’s exhortation to vote for down ticket races, everyone today would be talking about Pence and his speech, and the discussion would be about positive things associated with Trump and Pence and how they are going to move forward after the convention to at least possible victory.

But that is not what Trump’s supporters are interested in. They are interested in having a constant object of hatred and scorn, and it’s preferred if the target is a Republican. This is the driving force behind their support for Trump, principles be damned. Trump knows it too, which is why he was perfectly happy to let Ted Cruz go on stage, as long as the signal was clearly sent to his supporters that Ted Cruz is supposed to be the new object of hate.

    Good Read. Scary Read.

    https://www.balloon-juice.com/2016/07/21/the-gray-zone-under-threat-straining-alliances/

For all the sturm and drang about President Obama providing al Qaeda or al Qaeda in Iraq with a clear date and time of US withdrawal from Afghanistan or honoring the Bush 43 Administration negotiated date of withdrawal from Iraq; Trump has now given Putin the time window he would need for planning should he decide to engage in further adventures in the former Soviet states of Eastern Europe. President Obama and Secretary Clinton have been accused of leading from behind because they took the time to work through and with partners or assemble coalitions to deal with major international issues such as Iran’s nuclear program or the terrorism and low intensity warfare of the Islamic State. What Trump has done, in his remarks during the debates, on the stump, and in this interview with the NY Times is actually signal that the US will just not lead at all unless Trump feels it is being treated fairly.

I was going to say let’s pour one out for the VCR and VHS, but you probably did so a long time ago.

Funai Electric, the last remaining producer of VCRs, will throw in the towel by the end of July. Despite selling over 750,000 VCRs last year, the company’s decision to cease production was based on declining sales (you don’t say!) and difficulties sourcing the necessary parts to manufacture the ’80s-defining machine, according to the Nikkei (via Anime News Network).

It turned into a ballroom blitz
by Tim F.at10:59 am on July 21, 2016

This morning Martin Longman made what I think is the first correct interpretation of what happened with Ted Cruz last night. Yes, the Trump campaign had Ted Cruz’s speech in advance. I am sure that they read it. They almost certainly discussed it with Cruz. So how could such a disaster happen with their eyes open?

The answer is that it all happened just like Trump wanted. In wrestling terms Trump lured Cruz on stage and surprised him with a heel turn.
    ……………………………………….

    Consider a few things.

    * First, never forget that Trump came to reality TV by way of pro wrestling. He may not be able to business his way out of a paper bag but Trump showed up on the WWE circuit like he was born to be there. He showed a natural talent for syntax of the business, a mix of aggressive bullshit and classic show biz. Nobody had to show Trump how to wrap a room of screaming morons (yes I know, #notallprowrestlingfans) around his stubby fingers. That part came natural. I think I could make the case that a frothing WWE crowd has a lot in common with Republican base voters who constitute his faithful core. I hope I do not need point out that pro wrestling informs just about everything he does in this race. That time he crashed Glenn Beck’s anti-Trump Cruz event? WWE in a nutshell.

    * Trump never lets go of a grudge. This one neurosis overrides basically every other consideration Trump ever has, about anything. The man has a fruit fly attention for anything except who bows to Trump and who doesn’t.
