A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that Texas’ strict voter ID law violates the Voting Rights Act and ordered changes before the November election. President Barack Obama’s administration took the unusual step of deploying the weight of the U.S. Justice Department into the case when it challenged the law, which requires Texas residents to show one of seven forms of approved identification. The state and other supporters say the Texas law prevents fraud. Opponents say it discriminates by requiring forms of ID that are more difficult to obtain for low-income, African-American and Latino voters.

This is the money line: Texas doesn’t recognize university IDs from college students, but it does accept concealed handgun licenses as proof of identity.

Does this ruling from the 5th Circuit hold for other states that disenfranchised their voters, too?

    • July 20, 2016 at 4:12 pm

This is specific to Texas. I don’t know if similar voting rights challenges have been made in Louisiana or Mississippi.

    • 25 FoxfireTX
      July 20, 2016 at 4:14 pm

No, it only applies to the states within the 5th circuit but that includes numerous southern states. That said, other district courts may well use the 5th circuits reasoning even if not bound by it.

      • 26 FoxfireTX
        July 20, 2016 at 4:20 pm

The southern states within the 5th circuit are TX, LA and MS. While the specific law that was challenged only applies to TX and TX and residents, most circuit courts do not look kindly on district courts within their jurisdiction with similar type laws if they do not apply their rulings in a similar fashion. Not sure what if anything LA and MS have on their books.

thank you, Foxfire…maybe ALL those dominoes will fall soon…even in other states not represented by the 5th Circuit

So I watched Hillary’s interview with Charlie Rose, and had to laugh. She has not been in the Senate since PBO was there. If she thinks some “smoozing” is going to get the crazies elected by that mob in Cleveland will work with her, she is delusional. Wait until she discovers they won’t even take her phone calls much less accept any invitation to the WH. All of the formerly sane Rs are long gone.

I think they will work with Hillary, they had a problem with working with the black guy. President Obama doesn’t do “smoozing”, Bill does, so I suspect Hillary will dispatch Bill to work the phones. I could be wrong though.

It will be interesting. If she was a white a man, they might do it to get some things but I can’t imagine them working a woman, much less Hillary who they despise. I could not believe there were Republican women at that convention who were praising Melania for being subservient to her husband. I feel like there is some backward time travel going on here.

In the late 80’s I had the experience of attending a workshop and conference as my husband’s spouse for the company he worked for. The week long event took place in Dallas, TX with most others in attendance from the South whereas we were from the Pacific NW. The spouses were mainly women with only one man in the group. My biggest surprise was the attitude and demeanor of the women there. I felt like I had been dropped into Leave it to Beaver era. I bet with what I saw then that the South is still male dominant. Sorta like what I imagine Donald Trump’s family life values to be.

      • July 20, 2016 at 5:12 pm

You’re right, Don. It’s not about “shmoozing” it’s about race. The GOP pols never intended to work with Pres Obama, afraid of what their racist base back home would do to them. Working with “Bubba” doesn’t carry the same retaliation.

Yep, wonderful news and so great that it will be close to 20K when PBO leaves office. The beginning of the year it sunk and on the news of the Brixet vote. The markets have been slow steady inclines which means there are NO bubbles to burst during HRC’s time. It’s good for those nearing retirement in the next five to eight years as long as we have a DEM President and at least Senate.

The slow rise in the job market also helps avoid inflation. I keep being surprised at all of the dissatisfaction you hear about the job situation and how it is registering with people wanting to have a change. Especially a change that would take us back to the same policies that practically took us into a severe depression. I know historically our country swings back and forth between parties. However, it would be like contemplating suicide to want Donald Trump to be our President.

After the attacks at the RNC it seems near impossible that a sane conversation can be had with most of the GOP in congress & given that McCain will be defeated might as well leave him out of the picture

Just got back from a meeting with the second paid Hillary organizer sent to our county, which represents one percent of the vote in PA. She told me that at least seven more organizers will be sent into our tri-county area and she’s empowered to hire interns. This is the most intense investment in the state and region that I’ve ever seen and shows that the Hillary people are determined NOT to lose Pennsylvania. They are adopting exactly the same strategies that proved so successful in the 2008 and 2012 Obama campaigns. I’ve no doubt that this level of effort is being extended to Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and anywhere that isn’t a solid blue state, so there are going to be lots of opportunities out there for volunteers to jump in.

    http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/07/donald-trump-working-for-russia.html

Donald Trump is not a Russian agent in the sense that Philip and Elizabeth from The Americans are Russian agents. There’s no hidden radio in his laundry room where he transmits secrets to the Kremlin. But his relationship with Russia is disturbing and lends itself to frightening interpretations.

Franklin Foer has detailed the connections between the Republican nominee and the Kremlin. In short, it includes a long series of economic and social ties, which fit the pattern Vladimir Putin has used to infiltrate and undermine governments elsewhere — including in Ukraine, a coup Putin pulled off through Paul Manafort, who is now Trump’s campaign manager. Michael Crowley and Julia Ioffe have both described how the Russian propaganda apparatus has thrown itself behind Trump’s campaign. As Foer notes, Trump’s lack of creditworthiness makes him unusually reliant on unconventional sources of financing. This makes him vulnerable to financial leverage by an unscrupulous foreign entity.

    Be afraid. Be very afraid.
