Early Bird Chat

An attendee carries a tote bag with the caricature of U.S. President Barack Obama during a campaign rally for Hillary Clinton, presumptive 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, not pictured, the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, U.S., on Tuesday, July 5, 2016. Clintons path to the White House relies on reassembling the winning Obama coalition of minority voters and women, but her campaign is vying for a demographic long out of reach for Democrats -- college-educated whites -- that could reshape the map of U.S. swing states this year. Morning. Up until last month, the Bernie supporters in our Democratic community were convinced that Hillary would be indicted and their chosen one would be elevated to the nomination as the only candidate who was unsullied. I’m hearing gnashing of teeth everywhere as the dream shatters.

Gm, TOD! Not so “secretly” praying, actually hoping for an indictment. Yet they scream about a rigged system. But they have no care or concern for the fact Clinton received millions more votes than Bernie, Bernie should be our guy. Hypocrisy abounds.

Good morning TOD and Nerdy! Nerdy, thank you for the tremendous coverage of the NC rally yesterday. it is just so great to see PBO out on the campaign trail again.

For all the joy of yesterday, I am feeling pretty disheartened this morning. Cannot believe Paul Ryan is calling for an investigation into the FBI because of the report with no indictment. We just got by the last Benghazi panel and now they are going after the FBI. Oh, and let’s not forget that they are also going after House members for the sit in. They cannot pass a budget, refuse to do anything on immigration or gun legislation, but will waste taxpayer funds for ridiculous hearing after ridiculous hearing going after Clinton. This is completely out of control. For the first time, I am beginning to wonder if the GOP may actually get worse under a Clinton presidency than they have been with PBO. Unless we totally crush them in November, our system may well fall apart. The difference is, PBO made sure his administration was scandal free while the Clintons just can’t seem to help themselves in giving them additional fodder. Not feeling optimistic.

    • 17 jackiegrumbacher
      July 6, 2016 at 9:35 am

Foxfire, I believe Ryan is showboating to demonstrate to his ‘tea party’ base that he’s a tough cookie who’s not going to let a lot of Democrats push him around. These hearings, if they ever happen, will come to nothing, but will waste a lot of time and money letting the Republicans look like fighters. As for scandals, Benghazi, if you remember, was originally laid at PBO’s door by Romney and began as a conspiracy witch hunt against the president and his staff. All of the hearings and faux votes around ObamaCare were meant as harassment
and were an attempt to undermine PBO’s achievement and sully his image. There is no Democrat who would go unscathed, not even if the Archangel Michael descended and declared himself a Dem. Meanness, bigotry, lies, and total disregard for democracy have become the hallmarks of the Republican Party and HRC will not make it better or worse. If anything, she has been the subject of so much bogus crap over the years that it’s toughened her. As PBO put it, “when she takes a blow, she comes back straighter and stronger.” I’m following his lead in this as in everything else.

      • 18 FoxfireTX
        July 6, 2016 at 9:49 am

I get all that Jackie, but how long can this country go on like this? The GOP is not getting any saner, they are worse by the day. Even without a Trump as president, one of these days they are going to cross some line and do incalculable damage to this country. And who is the Democrat here? Comey is a certified R!

I despise Ryan and his plans as much as any other GOP wingnut, but thought at some point he cared enough about the country to exhibit some common sense. If they are now going after the FBI lead by a Republican, there simply is no limit. This report should not have come as a surprise to anyone. Clinton is not stupid, and would not have pursued this campaign if her legal adviser thought a real possibility of an indictment existed.

The only thing that will stop them at this point is a complete and utter defeat in November. But not sure that is going happen. They have made their base stupid for decades now:-)

    • July 6, 2016 at 11:39 am

Investigation into the FBI….sheesh! With all the time and money the House spends on hearings, you’d think *they* were the judicial branch rather than the legislative branch.

    • July 6, 2016 at 12:00 pm

FBI Director Cormey will be testifying tomorrow morning in front of the witch hunt panel. No matter what he says, they won’t believe him. Btw, Cormey is a Republican and WAS well-respected by Republicans on the hill. This is a dog and pony show by Ryan filmed in front of the cameras. They have no problems wasting taxpayer dollars. None.

Michelle Obama is Spreading Ripples of Hope
    by Nancy LeTourneau
    July 5, 2016 4:11 PM

Perhaps some of you remember that on Michelle Obama’s first trip abroad in 2009 she visited the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson school in England. It produced a pretty emotional moment that is partially captured in this video.
    ………………………………………….

I say all of that because today there is some interesting news that surfaced about the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson school.

Professor Simon Burgess, from Bristol University, has now studied the impact of her association with the schools on the girls’ exam results.

He analyzed the GCSE scores – taken when students are 16 years-old – from over the past decade, compared to London state secondary schools. He found a slight rise in scores from 2009 to 2010, while the 2012 score was substantially above 2011.

Professor Burgess said: “Those results focus on the overall effect, but since Michelle Obama was encouraging very high performance and aspirations it is important to look specifically at high performance too.”

He found a “very striking” rise in the number of top grades relative to the rest of London in 2012. “If this is really a result of Michelle Obama’s interventions, then it is a big effect,” he said.

“In general terms: ‘I did this; you could too’, can be a very powerful message if delivered by the ‘right’ person. Michelle Obama was that person, and her words had an effect – you only need to watch the news videos to see that the pupils were genuinely inspired.”

I believe that it was Michelle Obama’s experience with the students at this school that led her to initiate the Let Girls Learn project. Her work on this will continue long after her husband’s term as president is over, so we can expect these kinds of results to multiply.

That might seem like a small item in the scheme of things. But I disagree……

  12. July 6, 2016 at 9:39 am

    Good morning, NW and TODville.

Yesterday was quite the day! A little bittersweet for me as it becomes more concrete that PBO is coming to the end of his presidency. And HRC has come a long way in her full-throated embrace of PBO and his policies. In the beginning, it seemed she wasn’t quite sure how she was going to approach her campaign. She started out with criticism of and distancing from PBO because she thought he was unpopular and she wanted to distinguish herself as a change agent from all that went before. But focus groups and perhaps some PBO insiders she soon hired began to turn her around. It’s almost like a big light bulb went off as she realized that she must take great care to embrace the Obama coalition or risk losing. And now, I think we can see that her heart has changed. Her approach to campaigning led her to a lot of small group interaction and she listened. She saw how much we love PBO and just how strongly we will defend his legacy. She realized that she needed us and then I think realized how much she wanted us. Her meetings with mothers of so many murdered children surfaced a deep compassion that I don’t think she’s shown so publicly before. She will of course have areas that she wants to change but I do think she deeply respects what PBO has done for America and has learned quite a lot from him about what matters. She really seemed happy to appear with PBO yesterday and you can bet she will ask him to join her as often as he can. Nobody, including BC, will be more effective by her side.

I think her waffling on the TPP was part of that early distancing, and it is causing a lot of problems for the Democratic Platform document. Please weigh in and tell the committee members NOT to put any negative language about the TPP into the final platform. It would be a huge insult to President Obama. You can write a statement and then upload it here: http://go.demconvention.com/page/s/written-testimony

    AWEwsome read

    from the essay:

Such is the path of progress in America — slow, difficult, collective, and always unfinished. It doesn’t come from sudden revolutions or charismatic strongmen. It comes from the quiet, persistent effort of citizens and leaders who are flawed and fallible human beings, but nevertheless press on, believing that for all the days filled with setbacks and disappointments, there will be some days when, to paraphrase the president’s favorite King quote, we have bent the long arc of the moral universe ever slightly toward justice.
Barack Obama has been making this case his entire life. Now, in the twilight of his presidency, he’ll have the chance to deliver his closing argument to the American people, and help bend that arc one last time.

Good morning, TODville. Was able to hear the President’s remarks on Afghanistan this morning. I know he has personal regrets – and regrets reaching far and wide – that he wasn’t able to bring our troop level in that country down to zero before leaving office, but I so admire that he always moves forward with good judgment and bearing, after listening to his advisers.

That said, my second thought was how much different it would be to hear “the other guy” (as the Prez likes to call him) who is running on the GOP side speak to the nation and the world about this topic or any other, from the White House, and we can NEVER let that happen. #DumpTrump

Thirdly, after the remarks, BriWi mentioned we had just heard from “President Reagan.” Took him a few minutes to correct the record – he said he’d just been reading Reagan’s name before he said it. Could happen to anybody, I guess, but I worry about ol’ Brian’s grasp sometimes.

Why would he be reading about Reagan while PBO was talking about war in Afghanistan. More believable if he had said Bush. So it seems as we know anyhow – the pundits do not listen to anything the President says and then attack what they have no idea about.

One of Fox News Channel’s top anchors has filed a lawsuit against her former boss, Fox News CEO Roger Ailes, alleging wrongful termination and sexual harassment.

The news came in a bombshell email sent to reporters on Wednesday afternoon by the law firm representing Carlson, the host of “The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson” and former co-host of the morning show “Fox & Friends.”

According to the lawyers at Smith Mullin P.C., who are representing Carlson, her contract was terminated on June 23. Fox News did not publicly announce the contract termination, and Carlson said on her Twitter account at the time that she was on “on vacation”.

“I have strived to empower women and girls throughout my entire career,” Carlson said in a statement. “Although this was a difficult step to take, I had to stand up for myself and speak out for all women and the next generation of women in the workplace. I am extremely proud of my accomplishments at Fox News and for keeping our loyal viewers engaged and informed on events and news topics of the day.”

GOP foreign policy elites flock to Clinton.

Two weeks before he hopes to consolidate his party at the Republican convention in Cleveland, Donald Trump is driving Republican foreign policy elites into the arms of Hillary Clinton, as several more Reagan and Bush administration veterans say they not only oppose Trump but will likely vote for Clinton this fall.

Two former senior officials from the George W. Bush administration tell POLITICO that they will cast a ballot for Clinton over Trump. They are Stephen Krasner, a Stanford University professor who served as the State Department’s director of policy planning from 2005 to 2007, and David Gordon, a senior advieor at the Eurasia Group who was Krasner’s successor in that post, which provides strategic thinking.

Also saying he would choose Clinton over Trump is Reuel Marc Gerecht, a former CIA case officer and influential neoconservative writer for The Weekly Standard. Gerecht, a senior fellow with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, has been a harsh critic of Obama’s foreign policy, opposing last summer’s nuclear deal with Iran and arguing for “war” in Syria.

But given a choice between her and Trump, Gerecht said in an email, “I will vote for Clinton.”

Questionable tax-free payments to Trump staffers raise ‘red flags’
    Lori Ann LaRocco
    Tuesday, 5 Jul 2016 | 10:26 AM ET

A series of filing anomalies point to a Donald Trump camp that is either unaware of campaign finance law, or is actively funneling donors’ cash to insiders, according to several experts interviewed by CNBC.
These “red flags,” as one expert deemed them, include a total lack of disclosure on which vendors staffers for the presumptive Republican nominee are paying, an “unusual” six-figure payout to campaign staff for nontaxable expenses and what appeared to be double reimbursements for some employees’ expenses.

When asked about the apparently unusual filing practices, Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks said in an email that “the report speaks for itself.”
