I like him, too. He’s my Senator. I met him twice at some campaign events when he was running for the Special Election in 2013, and then again in 2014 for his re-election. The only problem is that Gov Christie will be the one to appoint his replacement. I”m hoping she’ll nominate Labor Secretary Thomas Perez. Of course, it will be up to Hillary Clinton.

I agree with you, steroid. This is no time to loose a single Democratic U.S. Senator. Personally, I am for either HUD Sec. J. Castro or Labor Sec. T. Perez. They are both young, smart, and very dynamic. I also think they would ensure her win in New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, Florida, and possibly Arizona, North Carolina Virginia and even Georgia. If She wanted to go with a seasoned politician she should consider Frm. MA Governor D. Patrick. He is smart, charismatic, and accomplished. Judging by his speech at the 2012 Democratic convention, and his record as MA governor, he would certainly energize the party. I also think MN Senator, Al Franklin would be an excellent choice. More importantly, he would be replaced by a Democrat.

In my humble opinion, Sec Clinton should not pick a senator from any of the states governed by Republican because that would guarantee a Republican Senator to replace him/her. That means, no Cory Booker, or Sherrod Brown, or Elizabeth Warren. Our goal MUST be winning the presidency, and taking control of Congress-particularly the Senate which plays a crucial role on who serves on the Supreme Court and who serves in the Hillary Clinton administration. Corey Booker, Sherrod Brown, Elizabeth Warren, and even Bernie Sanders, are all crucial in ensuring that the Democrats regain the majority in the Senate. We cannot afford to loose any one of them when there are so many fine VP candidates that would NOT threaten the control of the Senate by the Democrats. President Obama’s pick of VP Biden was brilliant! I am sure he knew that he would be replaced by another Democrat, as he was.

I agree. We can’t afford to lose any Senators that have a republican Governor in charge. We see how much damage the republicans are doing in not allowing or stalling the President’s nominees for appointments in crucial government positions. We also can finally do something about limiting gun violence.

Castro or Perez for me as well. No Cory Booker.

What a wonderful, wonderful letter/tribute to our incredible President. First, let me give thanks to Mr. John Pavvlovitz for writing this wonderful letter that expresses every thing I fell, and know, about our amazing President. Second, and more importantly, thank you Meta for sharing it with us at TOD. Third, Let me also add my thanks for all your brilliant commentaries and tweets that you share with us. I’ve learned so much from you. I will forever treasure your informed commentaries as well as your wisdom, which drives your passionate support of President Obama. You continually reinforce people like me who feel so blessed to be alive during the presidency of President Obama, his equally amazing First Lady, and by far the most humane, down to earth, knowledgeable, and very wise VP Joe Biden. I am so thankful to Chips for creating this space. Otherwise, I would never had a chance to interact with wonderful people like you.

I am a product of the SIXITIES! All I can say, is “Keep on Keeping on” with your excellent posts!

Out of the mouth of babes. How true, which brings me to this.

My son’s team mate was buried yesterday.

Yesterday, riding in the car, he gave out a deep sigh. What, I asked? “I am just thinking about Tonka, I never knew anyone killed by gun violence,” he said.

To date, the young man’s killer is still at large.

He and my son in this picture. This has got to stop.

It is not one graphic. It is not one bigoted remark. It is mainstreaming of extremism, coupled with collapsing institutions, hate, despair.
You have to be willfully blind to divorce this incident from pattern, devoid of empathy to not worry what this shift in culture will bring.
Be concerned about Trump. But also consider what’s coming whether he wins or loses, as extremism becomes mainstreamed.

Kansas’ Experiment in Right-Wing Economics Is Still Failing Miserably
    by David Atkins
    July 3, 2016 2:57 PM

Every few weeks I feel it’s important to return to the ongoing disaster in Sam Brownback’s Kansas. It doesn’t get nearly as much play as it should in the media, which is unfortunate because Kansas’ experience is definitive proof of the failure of supply-side, Laffer-curve-based economic theory.

Under the leadership of Brownback and one of the most conservative legislatures in America, Kansas dramatically slashed the tax rates of Kansas’ wealthy and its corporations. According to ideology, the cuts should have jumpstarted Kansas’ economy and led to rapid growth that created jobs and helped the tax cuts pay for themselves. Of course, nothing of the sort happened.

The effect was disastrous, a slow-rolling series of budget shortfalls followed by cuts to essential services like education and roads, which only slowed the economy further. A series of punitive and regressive sin taxes on tobacco and other goods were instituted to make up for the cuts to the tax rates of the wealthy, which of course only further undermined consumer spending.

How to Solve the Crisis in Black Unemployment
Adding 1.1 million new minority entrepreneurs would add 9 million sorely needed jobs to the U.S. economy.

    by Algernon Austin
    July 1, 2016

The African American unemployment rate has been twice the white unemployment rate since the 1960s. This relationship – which has persisted in good economic times and bad – means that blacks never experience a period of low unemployment, much less a time when they can claim to have full employment. For example, in April, the white unemployment rate was 4.3 percent, but the black rate was 8.8 percent. By further comparison, the white unemployment rate peaked at 9.2 percent in October 2009 in the immediate wake of the Great Recession.

For about a decade, I have examined many policies to address this disparity, and recently I stumbled upon a surprising one—entrepreneurship.

My analysis of minority entrepreneurship finds that we need to add 1.1 million more businesses owned by people of color to the economy in order to make the racial composition of American business owners match that of the overall American labor force. But if we can achieve this, these new businesses would add about nine million jobs to the American economy—enough jobs to achieve full employment for all racial groups. These jobs would close the black-white unemployment-rate gap and the gaps for Hispanics and American Indians as well.

    Not good.

Reut Michaeli, HRM’s executive director, said that Netanyahu would likely take advantage of his visit to Israel to “further develop secret agreements between those governments — agreements in which Israel is selling refugees, sending them from Israel to Africa to flee again and seek refuge across the Mediterranean.”
“It won’t be surprising if the price that Israel is paying, in return for her involvement in human trade is more weapons sent to Africa,” she said, which “might easily end up in the hands of the wrong regimes.”
“Instead of sharing the responsibility to solve the refugee crises, the Israeli government is contributing to more chaos and putting more people at risk.”
