This Couple Killed in the Orlando Shooting Hoped to Get Married. Now They Will Have a Joint Funeral

A couple who was deeply in love when they were killed during a gunman’s shooting rampage inside an Orlando nightclub will have a joint funeral service, their families said Monday.

Juan Ramon Guerrero, 22, and his 32-year-old boyfriend, Christopher “Drew” Leinonen, were among the 49 people who lost their lives Sunday in the worst mass shooting in American history. Services still need to be planned by the reeling families, but they want the two to be side-by-side when loved ones bid farewell, said Guerrero’s father, who has the same name as his son.

“I think my son wanted to do that. That’s why,” the elder Juan Ramon Guerrero, 61, said through tears. “I don’t care what the people think. I don’t care.”

The younger Guerrero and his boyfriend lived together and had been dating for nearly two years, family members said. Guerrero’s family was “really loving and accepting” when he came out as gay to them about three years ago, Aryam Guerrero, the victim’s 24-year-old sister, told TIME.

“They were honestly so in love. They were soul mates. You can tell by how they looked at each other,” she said. “It’s a little comforting that they died together.”

“If it’s not a funeral, they were going to have a wedding together,” she added.

Having lived in Central Florida for 17 years (and I’m sure many of you know what I’m sharing already), I’d add most people in Orlando and Orange County know everything Disney does or says is run past a team of lawyers first, as to coming close to that fine line of liability. (“Do we say no swimming or do we add something about the alligators?”) The theme parks are the big economy factor in that area, as everybody knows. You’ll spot the politicians and even law enforcement not covering up, but referring to Disney much of the time for clarification, etc. It’s not really openly talked about, but everybody knows it’s going on. And I used to kid when I lived there that there are two kinds of people in Orlando: those who have been to the theme parks once and never plan to go again, and those who can’t wait to work there part-time when they retire to get the discounts for themselves and their grandchildren. IMO, they’re nothing like the NRA in hushing up the criticism, but if it were in the old west, you might have said they “run the town.”

Bernie is fully aware that Trump is toast & the dem nominee will be the next President – his stupid whining and attacks on Hillary are simply making more and more people committed to Hillary.

If he was in the senate arguing for gun control he would sway more people than doing what he is doing now.

Dudette, thanks for this tweet. Note that Hillary ‘won’ these milestones–she wasn’t given them because the system was rigged in her favor or there was a conspiracy to make her the nominee. She is the best and voters chose her willingly. Between sore loser Bernie and lunatic Trump, we’re seeing some very ugly aspects of the stereotypical misogynist.

I am so proud of our Dem senators. They’re standing up for us and for the victims of gun violence and their grieving families. They’re showing what political leadership means and shining a light on the source of our problems in the US House and Senate–Republicans in thrall to the NRA.

Education Department Wants To Shut Down The Accreditor That Legitimized For-Profit Colleges
For-profit college watchdog under federal scrutiny
    June 14, 2016

BOSTON —Federal education officials are deciding whether to shut down the nation’s biggest accreditor of for-profit colleges over allegations that it overlooked deception by some of its schools.

The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools is meant to be a watchdog for hundreds of for-profit schools, wielding the stamp of approval that colleges need to receive federal money. It’s one of many accreditors authorized by the U.S. Education Department to ensure the quality of schools. But the nonprofit is being accused of employing lax standards and failing to stop schools from preying on students.

Institutions that have operated under the group’s certification include the Corinthian College chain, which closed in 2015 amid fraud allegations, and the ITT Technical Institute chain, which now faces federal charges of fraud. Even after the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau began investigating both in 2013, the council found no major problems during its own reviews. In 2014, it included two Corinthian schools on its annual “honor roll.

Everyone keep saying that Bernie Sanders is not ending his campaign. The campaign has ended; he is the only one who is not aware that it has ended. Right now, he is running against himself.

      • 43 nathkatun7
        June 16, 2016 at 12:39 am

COS, I am with you 100%! Reality based people know that Bernie’s presidential campaign is history. He and his supporters can delude themselves all they want, but Bernie Sanders is not going to be the Presidential nominee of the Democratic Party! Hillary Clinton won fair and square. Most of us loyal Democrats are “fired up and ready to go” to make sure the racist, know-nothing, Donald Trump is thoroughly defeated.

His supporters are worse than the GOP with the voting conspiracy stories. They are campaigning for Trump – his twitter feed has the same Hillary comments as the worst of the GOP.

“Less than three days after a popular gay club in Orlando became the site of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, Republican leaders in the House of Representatives blocked a vote on a proposal that would ensure federal contractors can’t discriminate against employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identification. Hours earlier, a number of notable conservative figures had put on a good show of standing in solidarity with the L.G.B.T. community, making the rounds on cable news to stand up for the dozens of gay men and women who died in Sunday’s attack. On Tuesday night, however, it was back to business as usual as the House Rules Committee prevented the amendment from reaching the floor for a vote.”

  35. June 15, 2016 at 10:26 pm

Listening to Roland Martin today, I saw that the 50 kill in Orlando was not America most mass murders. 1917 East St. Louis….200 kill. 1919 Arkansas Massacre 237 kill. 1921 Tulsa Massacre 300 dead.

The Dem filibuster is going to lead to a vote this morning, as Republicans finally conceded that it was in their best interest to shut it off. It may pass the Senate, but the road will be tough in the House, unless Nancy Pelosi can pull off a miracle. If Ryan were man enough to bring a Senate passed bill to the floor and all House Dems united, maybe they could peel off enough Republicans in purple states to push through a glaringly common sense restriction against selling guns to suspected terrorists. Dems have been magnificent through this whole process, working together to get the message out and sticking to their principles. Kudos to those thousands of Americans who called in their support.

Thank you, Lh. That was incredibly powerful. Murphy has been magnificent through this whole process and he has shown that he can be a powerful moral force in the Senate. I would like to hear every Republican senator respond to his final question. If a teacher could face death to give a moment of comfort to a six-year old, what would they be willing to face? If they were capable of shame, they would be shamed, but I fear most of them lost that part of their humanity the day they sold their souls to the NRA.
