As the White House race took off last summer, food giant Mondelez International found itself in an unusual position: Republican candidate Donald Trump began delivering broadsides against one of its iconic products, Oreo cookies.
“Nabisco is closing a factory in Chicago, and they’re moving to Mexico. No more Oreos. I don’t like Oreos anymore,” Trump told a crowd in New Hampshire on Aug. 14, reacting to reports that Mondelez was shutting down some production lines at its Nabisco subsidiary in Chicago while boosting output in Mexico.
Trump’s statement that Mondelez was closing a Chicago factory was erroneous, as the company quickly pointed out, but that didn’t stop him from repeating it.
t’s unusual for a top presidential candidate, especially a representative of the business-friendly Republican Party, to attack major U.S. corporations by name.
But over the course of his unconventional campaign, Trump has aimed his fire at a range of companies, mostly for shifting jobs abroad (Ford Motor Co, United Technologies Corp unit Carrier Corp) but also for building products in foreign markets (Apple) and for what he said were violations of antitrust laws (Amazon).
Trump has threatened the companies with boycotts, tariffs, taxes and other punishments. The Trump campaign declined to comment for this story.
Some of the companies saw their share prices dip in the wake of Trump’s criticism while others experienced a small boost.
But all of them were presented with a dilemma that’s familiar to the presumptive nominee’s many vanquished Republican rivals: Should they engage with a possible future president known for holding a grudge, possibly inviting more wrath, or should they lie low and risk allowing Trump to define them and to push policies they deem harmful?
And one of the main reasons Bill Clinton’s approval rating was high in June of his final year in office was because Democrats were sick of the RWNJ war against him, that we all had to “defend.” Ugh.
Not quite. She would be and stay busy with other more pressing matters, but far from the GE in which she is continuously poisoning the minds of the young revolutionaries.
For those of you who are asking about us SoCal folks and the earthquake…
I didn’t know we had an earthquake until I turned on the KTLA5 news this morning at 5am.
I missed the shaking, I missed the swaying and I live in an upstairs unit.
There is no need for Mother Earth to repeat the process just because I missed it – nope, I’m good, no need for a do-over.
A Father & his Daughter(s). IMO, the birth of a daughter(s) is the best thing that transforms a mans character to a Teddy Bear, not a sheep.
Laila Ali, is just like her father Muhammad Ali and the Teddy Bear in him hated that she pursued boxing, while paradoxically being so proud of her for doing that. Damn!
Given the congress GOP is still working hard to make him a 1 term President during those 223 days – it is good to see he will use them to ensure his programs will be implemented by the next President.
With all of you guys making jokes, I just hope one of you has the decency to go check on Dr. West. Today can’t be a good day what with him not receiving tickets to Hillary’s inauguration.
One of my kids was accepted at that beautiful school but decided on another one. Independent Prep schools are the best kept secret. And they all offer great scholarships to deserving students and financial aids to qualifying ones.
There are days that I sort of regret not taking a scholarship to a boarding school — although I was an outstanding student, I was also the nerd who hung on the fringes of the “cool” kids…
“This transition is structured, anticipated, consistent, orderly and boring. Which is one way of saying that the Democratic Party is a coherent, well-functioning political institution that bears little resemblance to the cascading disasters that define the Republican Party and yielded Donald Trump as its likely presidential nominee.”
O, the Fallon clips! Suh-weet! 🙂 🙂 Thanks NerdyW; I never get to see these types of things unless they’re shared here. Thank you, will go watch now.
GE, TODobots & friends! It is Friday, right? Have a good and safe one!
Am leaving my Sasha greetings here – I really love that young lady’s spirit! I love the sense of authenticity she emits, her warmth, and her periodic skepticism of the media antics (as I think her face shows sometimes)! I wish her every blessing as she shortly enters her life away from the brighter glare/spotlight (into something more normal I hope).
These suggestions are great, but as we have seen the past 6 years, we need to keep the Democrats in the Senate. Elizabeth Warren, Tammy Duckworth and Tammy Baldwin would be replaced by Republicans, as their states have Republican governors. These appointments would be counter-productive. Fortunately, Hillary understands the importance of the Senate and will not hobble herself by taking any Democrats. There are other women available. Elizabeth Warren really needs to stay in the Senate, like Teddy Kennedy.
Tulsi Gabbard as an alternative for Homeland Security? NO WAY. She’s an Islamophobe who proved her immaturity by leaving the DNC to go full bore for Bernie Sanders. NOPE!
Ex-Stanford freshman Brock Turner, recently convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman, was quick to blame his crime on Stanford University’s “party culture” in court. He told his probation officer that he’d never used any illicit drugs and had never drank alcohol prior to the start of college.
But court documents, released Friday morning by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department, suggest otherwise — which would mean Turner lied to the probation officer and the court.
Actually, this not garnering huge attention is a good thing I think. Less chance of drawing an idiot hater who might think him/herself the conduit out of the woodwork.
BOOM!!
Bringing over…now I’m gonna watch PBO:)
Nutcase.

Thanks, meta. Vindictive much?
Every day it gets worse for him. The further this goes, the more entitled and unscripted he will be. Watch out, people. He’s going to lose his s&*t.

Ugh!
I used to like her.
Me too. Used to.
Drowning in the koolaid….sad.
I used to like her, but she seem to have lost it.
Someone needs to appoint her to an attache or ambassadorship job somewhere far. Very far. And fast, too.
and reward the clueless?
Not quite. She would be and stay busy with other more pressing matters, but far from the GE in which she is continuously poisoning the minds of the young revolutionaries.
That’s a big fat No!
She had us fooled, then, she opened her mouth.
Have a seat Nina, you getting on my last nerve, girl !
One would think she knows better
… behaving like the stereotype angry black woman.
what does that even mean?
Aretha Franklin will be coming up on MSNBC next, to talk about her friendship with Muhammad Ali.

The RWNJ’s all around AZ talk badly about La Raza here…. this is nothing new.
With all of you guys making jokes, I just hope one of you has the decency to go check on Dr. West. Today can’t be a good day what with him not receiving tickets to Hillary’s inauguration.
Perhaps he will settle for eating his beans straight from the can, with a spoon, weeping while he watches on telly.
Damn Don, that bro, just can’t catch a break. LOL!!!!
Thank you, Mr. President

I so understand that – exactly my school life – and it wasn’t real cool to be a good student – so I was very close to giving it all away.

Really, really good suggestions!!
I thought so too
We have to all vote for Hill to even make that a possibility!
