Season Finale of ‘The Americans’ tonight on FX…
The CEO of FX Networks, John Landgraf, and the VP of Current Series at FX Networks, Colette Wilson, join June Thomas and showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields to talk about the process of creating The Americans, the importance of storytellers, and the significance of the movie, The Day After. (In Soundcloud link) ….also the unbelievable real-life story of two brothers whose parents turned out to be Soviet spies:
“For years Donald Heathfield, Tracey Foley and their two children lived the American dream. Then an FBI raid revealed the truth: they were agents of Putin’s Russia. Their sons tell their story….im Foley turned 20 on 27 June 2010. To celebrate, his parents took him and his younger brother Alex out for lunch at an Indian restaurant not far from their home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Both brothers were born in Canada, but for the past decade the family had lived in the US. The boys’ father, Donald Heathfield, had studied in Paris and at Harvard, and now had a senior role at a consultancy firm based in Boston. Their mother, Tracey Foley, had spent many years focused on raising her children, before taking a job as a real estate agent. To those who knew them, they seemed a very ordinary American family, albeit with Canadian roots and a penchant for foreign travel. Both brothers were fascinated by Asia, a favoured holiday destination, and the parents encouraged their sons to be inquisitive about the world: Alex was only 16, but had just returned from a six-month student exchange in Singapore. After a buffet lunch, the four returned home and opened a bottle of champagne to toast Tim reaching his third decade. The brothers were tired; they had thrown a small house party the night before to mark Alex’s return from Singapore, and Tim planned to go out later. After the champagne, he went upstairs to message his friends about the evening’s plans. There came a knock at the door, and Tim’s mother called up that his friends must have come early, as a surprise….
…At the door, she was met by a different kind of surprise altogether: a team of armed, black-clad men holding a battering ram. They streamed into the house, screaming, “FBI!” Another team entered from the back; men dashed up the stairs, shouting at everyone to put their hands in the air. Upstairs, Tim had heard the knock and the shouting, and his first thought was that the police could be after him for underage drinking: nobody at the party the night before had been 21, and Boston police took alcohol regulations seriously. When he emerged on to the landing, it became clear the FBI was here for something far more serious. The two brothers watched, stunned, as their parents were put in handcuffs and driven away in separate black cars….Alex presumed there had been some mistake – the wrong house, or a mix-up over his father’s consultancy work. Donald travelled frequently for his job; perhaps this had been confused with espionage. At worst, perhaps he had been tricked by an international client. Even when the brothers heard on the radio a few days later that 10 Russian spies had been rounded up across the US, in an FBI operation dubbed Ghost Stories, they remained sure there had been a terrible mistake. But the FBI had not made a mistake, and the truth was so outlandish, it defied comprehension. Not only were their parents indeed Russian spies, they were Russians. The man and woman the boys knew as Mom and Dad really were their parents, but their names were not Donald Heathfield and Tracey Foley. Those were Canadians who had died long ago, as children; their identities had been stolen and adopted by the boys’ parents. Their real names were Andrei Bezrukov and Elena Vavilova. They were both born in the Soviet Union, had undergone training in the KGB and been dispatched abroad as part of a Soviet programme of deep-cover secret agents, known in Russia as the “illegals”. After a slow-burning career building up an ordinary North American background, the pair were now active agents for the SVR, the foreign spy agency of modern Russia and a successor to the KGB. They, along with eight other agents, had been betrayed by a Russian spy who had defected to the Americans….continued”
THIS!
me! You guys rock.
Remember this story from years ago. Wrongly convicted of rape in High School, as a 16-year old….tried and convicted as an adult. Served 5 years before being exonerated. Was a highly touted football recruit, but his life was stripped away due to white privilege. He now works for the innocence project and the NFL.
“I would say it’s a case of privilege,” Banks said. “It seems like the judge based his decision on lifestyle. He’s lived such a good life and has never experienced anything serious in his life that would prepare him for prison. He was sheltered so much he wouldn’t be able to survive prison. What about the kid who has nothing, he struggles to eat, struggles to get a fair education? What about the kid who has no choice who he is born to and has drug-addicted parents or a non-parent household? Where is the consideration for them when they commit a crime?….continued”

Holy Crap. The RNC website does not contain a single reference to Donald Trump. No picture, no name. Total blackout.
We just got this email from TPM Reader DL. And as far as I can tell, she’s right. There does not seem to be any mention of Donald Trump on the official Republican Party website,
Hillary is there. Bernie is there. George H.W.Bush is there. Reagan is there. Reagan/Bush. Lincoln is there. No Trump anywhere. Not on the blog, signups. Not anywhere that I could find.
I’m so very happy about this. Since I used to live in Florida, I’ve been following the awful Pam Bondi’s “career” for a while. She is one dark and ugly and nasty crook, IMO. Hope the investigation results in her going home or to prison, sans job.
Good tactic. Go after donnie dreck’s corrupt enablers and watch him fly off the handle. Yet again.

Wowsa. Loretta Lynch is THE definition of the word “fierce.”
Love and admire her so much!!!!

Federal Judge Says 2 Ohio Voting Laws Are Unconstitutional
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A federal judge blocked certain requirements for how thousands of ballots are counted in Ohio, saying in a decision on Tuesday that the policies are unconstitutional and violate the Voting Rights Act.
…Among other changes, the laws require voters to provide certain identifying information when casting absentee or provisional ballots. Voters must include their name, signature, valid forms of identification, address and birth date. Ballots from legitimate voters could be rejected because of errors or omissions.
…The judge, Algenon L. Marbley of United States District Court, said the laws could harm black voters in particular.
“The Ohio General Assembly took action after the disastrous 2004 election to expand voters’ access to absentee and provisional balloting,” the decision said, “and the rollback of these improvements will disproportionately harm African-American voters.”
…The judge blocked Mr. Husted from requiring full and accurate completion of absentee- and provisional-ballot forms before otherwise qualified voters’ ballots could be counted. He also blocked sections that reduced the time voters could correct errors and prohibited poll worker assistance.
…Also on Tuesday, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit delivered an incremental victory for critics of Republican-engineered changes to North Carolina’s elections procedures.
In a brief order, the court said North Carolina could not, at least for now, enforce its recent rollbacks of same-day voter registration and out-of-precinct voting. The appeals court, which sits in Richmond, Va., will hear arguments about North Carolina’s practices on June 21, nearly two months after a federal judge upheld the procedures.
Thanks for the Tweets NW. I went to the link on this tweet
Found the following – which Bernie should have thought about when he was elected to congress.
“What’s your first priority when you come into office?
My first priority is to develop relationships with my colleagues in the Democratic caucus in the House because that’s not something that my predecessor did. If I want anything passed, I know that I’ve got to have relationships with my colleagues, and so that’s going to be a priority for me.”
😀 Hi, TS, looks like we were on the same wavelength as about the same time. 😀 😀
I initially wondered how she would cope in as the only black woman in a legislature of mainly white men – but I should have held back the worry – she knows how politics works & will do well for her people. The rep she defeated never saw it coming.
Yea, reading that she got more than 50% of the vote made me want to find out a bit more about her. That guest editorial showed me a bit of *who* she is. I also like her response that she intends to mentor others re taking a turn and that she is not looking for a life-time spot.
Thank you, Ms NerdyW. I read that tweet and interview about Attica Scott (Congrats & best wishes as you serve, Ms Scott) and was led to this TV guest editorial by her. Quite impressive to see her calmly standing up for herself….and her community!

GE TODville.
If actions speak louder than words (of course they do), the GOP has fully embraced Trump and abandoning any pretense that they’re not card-carrying white supremacists.
Regarding the most famous athlete IN THE WORLD:
contrast is striking
They are so awful – but given how they have treated PBO – why would they do this differently. Their dishonour is that they deny they are racist & call out Trump for doing exactly what they voted for him to do.
And a GREAT time was had by all!!! 🙂 🙂

From the article:
“Two of them the president handed to two children who welcomed him when he visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. The other two he left at the visitor’s book at the museum.
All four paper cranes were folded by Obama.”
How beautiful. Thank you for sharing! #Peace
GE JO’B.
Naturally because of my Japanese heritage, I’m fascinated by their culture, and have always been a fan (not skilled, though 😦 ) of origami.
PBO has such natural artistic talent, am really looking forward to his activity after Jan 2017. We won’t see him or his family every day 😦 , but I predict he and his family will have the same kind of media attention that Jackie O and John Jr. did after JFK’s assassination. (Caroline not so much, because I think she’s less inclined to be in the spotlight.)
PBO and FLOTUS will be in such demand, and he’ll be able to say what he *really* thinks. And his memoir will require several readings to savor because of his effortless skill writing just the right words for every moment.
Between now and next January we should compile a running list of all the things no other President has (or will be able to do) done before — like dropping the mic at the final WHPC, singing “Amazing Grace” in Charleston, etc.
Love your beautiful heritage! And everything else you wrote here!
Pro-Clinton super PAC to launch a ‘Trump Lies’ campaign
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2016/06/08/pro-clinton-super-pac-to-launch-a-trump-lies-campaign/
“Compulsive lying runs through every facet of his life and his candidacy,” said David Brock, who runs Correct the Record and other outside groups aligned with Clinton.
The strategy, Brock said, is to use Trump’s frequent misstatements as a character issue and convince general election voters that he lacks the temperament, judgment and character to serve as president.
“His appeal is that he is supposedly a straight shooter, and you have to ask the question, ‘How can someone who basically lies every five minutes be a straight shooter?’ ” Brock said. “We want to try to undercut that reputation by demonstrating the depth, breadth, substance and consequence of his lies.”
They also need TrumpHates and TheGOPisRacist to round off a trio of truths.

Lawrence devoted his show’s “Last Word” to the assassination of Bobby Kennedy in 1968. As he went through the story, I remembered it as though it were yesterday – where I was and what I was doing.
We went through so much as a country in the 1960s – none of us who were there will ever forget it.
A special hug to our O’friend {{{nath}}} – whom I believe had the great honor of working to help get Bobby Kennedy elected that year. If only.
I remember, though I was young….I did not know that about Nath! (Where has he been??) Thinking of you, friend….
Thanks for reminding us, JO’B.
I woke to my clock radio alarm saying “the Senator has been wheeled by gurney… ” I had no idea who they were talking about, having gone to bed ecstatic that he had won CA (then winner-take-all) primary. I pretty much worshipped the ground he walked on, and so did all my fellow girl friends in 7th grade, and have to confess that I prayed they were reporting on Senator McCarthy — know it’s bad of me, but was desperately hoping they weren’t talking about Bobby. 😦
We got our yearbooks that day, and we all had a hard time signing each other’s books — which I no longer have, but I’m pretty sure most of the messages were very sad and depressing — we were all devastated.
Some of my co-workers and I were meeting for breakfast that morning, and we were totally silent in the restaurant, also listening to the radio for news, crying.
I was married to my late husband in May of 1968. I graduated from PSU in June of that year. Our wedding photographer took photos of Bobby Kennedy on his swing campaigning through Oregon. Robert rode a train through Oregon with several stops on his way to California. His death was horrifying and piled onto the other assassinations and Vietnam War and protests. When my husband and I went to see the wedding proofs we found out from our devastated photographer about his connection to RFK’s Oregon campaign. Sad memories mixed with personal special moments.
Wow. Such vivid memories entwined together – the good and the awful. Somehow we made it out of that decade!
Thanks for sharing this JOB. I was in tears by the end of that segment.
