Thanks, AMK. This is the Ali of my youth that I still remember vividly. I hope he rests in peace, eternally young and eternally a champion in our hearts.

    • June 4, 2016 at 12:33 pm

This is all I want to do today. Find clips of Ali and watch. He was an amazing human being.

For those still keeping score, the Puerto Rico primary is today. Then it all ends in a big finale on Tuesday, with only DC straggling behind on the 14th. I hope the big party guns step in next Wednesday and deliver the boom to Bernie. Either get hold of your delegates and throw your full support to the party nominee or suffer the consequences in the Senate and in your re-election chances.

Oh, Nerdy. I am completely overwhelmed by the images and the content you bring to this post. First the pictures of the graduates and our First Lady. Its as if looking at those images just lifts my spirits heavenward. Thinking back on the life of Muhammad Ali is poignant. I wish more than anything that he was not so sick for so long. Brain injury is so important to talk about. Thank you for your work here. I am always moved and often want to hug you for your service to us. Blessings on you and all the other Blog tyrants and our founding mama, Chips.

Bishops face sack for mishandling abuse under papal plans.

Pope Francis has approved measures to sack bishops who mishandle child sexual abuse cases, a papal decree says.

Bishops who are “negligent” in dealing with priests committing abuse will be removed under the new legal procedures.

The decree comes in response to long-running demands by abuse victims and their supporters to hold bishops accountable if they fail to protect their flocks from paedophiles.

Existing laws relating to abuse cases would be tightened, the Pope said.

He acknowledged that canon law already allows for a bishop to be removed for negligence but says he wants a more precise definition of the “grave reasons” that could lead to dismissal.

He didn’t do so well with the Australian Cardinal – who denies all knowledge of what happened under his watch. Gave him a job in the Vatican – and he was just too ill to come back to Australia for the enquiry. The man should have been left in Australia to face the situation.

He gave him the job & removed him from the country when the enquiry was ongoing & everyone (including the Pope) KNEW he was going to be called to give evidence. I want to see the actions, not just the words.

frankly, at this point, I am surprised that we are not waiting for the white smoke to come out of the vatican.

    GM TODville.

Shed a tear with TODville on the overnight thread for #MuhommedAli, may he rest in peace.

Lots of tweets this morning about his passing 😦 . Here are a few:

One last thing: at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley tonight, Paul Simon was singing “The Boxer.” Pausing before the final verse, he told the audience, “I’m sorry to tell you this, but Muhammad Ali just passed away.”

    • 34 arapaho415
      June 4, 2016 at 10:15 am

      GM Ladyhawke.

The Boxer is one of my all-time favs by Simon and Garfunkel (there are countless others).

Didn’t know there was a Greek Theatre in Berkeley. Wonder if it’s outdoor seating like the one in Griffith Park LA.

A couple more (powerful, IMHO) tweets this morning:

      • June 4, 2016 at 10:33 am

I’m old enough to remember how much Muhammad Ali changed the American conversation and culture on race. He was such a powerful, dynamic person, upholding the dignity and worth of all African Americans, and I might add, of all human beings.

Every couple of weeks or so I’d go to youtube and watch Ali-Foreman, I didn’t watch it so much for the boxing. I’d watch it because I loved the way Ali would revel in his blackness.

    • 40 jacquelineoboomer
      June 4, 2016 at 10:32 am

Ever notice how many of the true icons white America revels in, all reveled in their blackness?

It’s right before our eyes, white people – there’s no room for hate. Not if we want to truly live among greatness.

Seems their are 2 things that can replace politicians in the news

    1. The weather – rain & more rain down the Eastern Coast of Australia
    2. Muhammad Ali

Filled up our 7pm news. I’ve never been a boxing fan but M.A. was one in a million (or 2 or 3). Everyone knew who he was 🙂

Once you saw Muhammad Ali on TV, you could never forget him. Whether it was in the boxing ring or speaking up for his rights and for humankind, he spoke with a bravado and a grandeur that was indelible. Somehow black and white TV made his persona even stronger.

I was never a fan of boxing but I distinctly remember one night I was out with friends and we went into a bar and the first Frazier-Ali fight was on a TV set up especially for the event. In those days, TV’s were a normal size, not the big screen jumbotrons you see now. The place was packed and everyone was leaning in and completely mesmerized. It was incredibly electric and I’ll never forget that wild victory.

meta, Ali was one of a kind. I remember cheering him on and I had family in Vietnam, but I loved him as a boxer, as a fierce person who said it like it was and being as brash as he was, he never said anything that wasn’t fact. It brought a lot of dissension in my family and I just shrugged my shoulders and said, “he was right” That as not popular in the 60’s or 70’s. They gave him hell and then we had GW, Cheney, BC and a few others that dodged the draft at that time. Are they reviled? I don’t think so. RIP Ali, you were the Greatest fighter of my time.
