First Lady Michelle Obama delivers the commencement speech after being presented with an honorary doctorate of humane letters at City College in New York City. This is the final commencement speech of her tenure as First Lady. In her speech Mrs. Obama celebrated City College’s diverse student body and the struggles that many students endured on the road to graduation
Thanks, AMK. This is the Ali of my youth that I still remember vividly. I hope he rests in peace, eternally young and eternally a champion in our hearts.
For those still keeping score, the Puerto Rico primary is today. Then it all ends in a big finale on Tuesday, with only DC straggling behind on the 14th. I hope the big party guns step in next Wednesday and deliver the boom to Bernie. Either get hold of your delegates and throw your full support to the party nominee or suffer the consequences in the Senate and in your re-election chances.
Oh, Nerdy. I am completely overwhelmed by the images and the content you bring to this post. First the pictures of the graduates and our First Lady. Its as if looking at those images just lifts my spirits heavenward. Thinking back on the life of Muhammad Ali is poignant. I wish more than anything that he was not so sick for so long. Brain injury is so important to talk about. Thank you for your work here. I am always moved and often want to hug you for your service to us. Blessings on you and all the other Blog tyrants and our founding mama, Chips.
Good morning Ms. Chips, Danny and TOD family, I hope all is well with everyone this lovely Saturday morning. Congrats amk, on being FURST this morning.
Thanks Nerdy for opening up TOD’ville this morning as well as all the other wonderful things you do for us. 🎉🙏👏👌👊
#RIPMuhammadAli
To all, I hope you have a gratifying, pleasant, and an unforgettable rewarding day today. ❤ ❤ ❤
Thank God that President Obama is still the President of The United States of America. ⭐🏆 ⭐🏆 ⭐🏆
That was such a great speech she gave. It was so full of truth!! I will miss her in the White House, but I can’t wait to see what they do now. It will be awe inspiring.
Bishops face sack for mishandling abuse under papal plans.
Pope Francis has approved measures to sack bishops who mishandle child sexual abuse cases, a papal decree says.
Bishops who are “negligent” in dealing with priests committing abuse will be removed under the new legal procedures.
The decree comes in response to long-running demands by abuse victims and their supporters to hold bishops accountable if they fail to protect their flocks from paedophiles.
Existing laws relating to abuse cases would be tightened, the Pope said.
He acknowledged that canon law already allows for a bishop to be removed for negligence but says he wants a more precise definition of the “grave reasons” that could lead to dismissal.
He didn’t do so well with the Australian Cardinal – who denies all knowledge of what happened under his watch. Gave him a job in the Vatican – and he was just too ill to come back to Australia for the enquiry. The man should have been left in Australia to face the situation.
He gave him the job & removed him from the country when the enquiry was ongoing & everyone (including the Pope) KNEW he was going to be called to give evidence. I want to see the actions, not just the words.
One last thing: at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley tonight, Paul Simon was singing “The Boxer.” Pausing before the final verse, he told the audience, “I’m sorry to tell you this, but Muhammad Ali just passed away.”
I’m old enough to remember how much Muhammad Ali changed the American conversation and culture on race. He was such a powerful, dynamic person, upholding the dignity and worth of all African Americans, and I might add, of all human beings.
Every couple of weeks or so I’d go to youtube and watch Ali-Foreman, I didn’t watch it so much for the boxing. I’d watch it because I loved the way Ali would revel in his blackness.
HERE’S A WORD TO THOSE OF YOU WHO THINK YOU ARE GONG TO GET INTO MY NEIGHBORHOOD AND DO SOME HARM..YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND YOU ARE IN FOR A BIG AND YOUR LAST SURPRISE!
I’m crying reading PBO’s eloquence. He captured the essence of Ali, giant in all ways. I will never forget all the times he shook me up with his words. A special kind of person who lit up the world.
Tears are just gushing out of me as I read the President’s statement. Sitting in my car outside a restaurant. Gotta take a few minutes to collect myself before I go in.
Ugh!
Once you saw Muhammad Ali on TV, you could never forget him. Whether it was in the boxing ring or speaking up for his rights and for humankind, he spoke with a bravado and a grandeur that was indelible. Somehow black and white TV made his persona even stronger.
I was never a fan of boxing but I distinctly remember one night I was out with friends and we went into a bar and the first Frazier-Ali fight was on a TV set up especially for the event. In those days, TV’s were a normal size, not the big screen jumbotrons you see now. The place was packed and everyone was leaning in and completely mesmerized. It was incredibly electric and I’ll never forget that wild victory.
meta, Ali was one of a kind. I remember cheering him on and I had family in Vietnam, but I loved him as a boxer, as a fierce person who said it like it was and being as brash as he was, he never said anything that wasn’t fact. It brought a lot of dissension in my family and I just shrugged my shoulders and said, “he was right” That as not popular in the 60’s or 70’s. They gave him hell and then we had GW, Cheney, BC and a few others that dodged the draft at that time. Are they reviled? I don’t think so. RIP Ali, you were the Greatest fighter of my time.
I saw that, I just finished watched her speech. She went there and am proud of her. Yes our FLOTUS can be very fierce. She brought tears to my eyes with this one. Lover muches.
G’day all. I woke this morning with a tear in my eye and this song played in my mind….I saw Ali in The Rome Olympics-1960 and his first wife was a personal friend…..Fond memories.
Thanks, AMK. This is the Ali of my youth that I still remember vividly. I hope he rests in peace, eternally young and eternally a champion in our hearts.
This is all I want to do today. Find clips of Ali and watch. He was an amazing human being.

Puerto Rico will bring a big delegate haul for HRC.
So perfect!
really, I have never seen such a buncha complete capitulating cowards from a political party.
I feel the same way.
Nerdy, thank you for this image and for being our champion as you keep bringing the TOD goodness day after day, hour after hour. You are the best!
Thank you very much, Jackie.

Muhammad Ali Knocked Trump’s Muslim Ban Before He Died

Nick Hanauer was great on Real Time last night. I really like listening to him talk plainly about income equality

frankly, at this point, I am surprised that we are not waiting for the white smoke to come out of the vatican.
GM TODville.
Shed a tear with TODville on the overnight thread for #MuhommedAli, may he rest in peace.
Lots of tweets this morning about his passing 😦 . Here are a few:
Here’s a photo of #MuhammedAli with Fidel Castro.
More photos with text en Español on this twitter account:
LOL.
that’s a great tribute by the kenyan.
One last thing: at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley tonight, Paul Simon was singing “The Boxer.” Pausing before the final verse, he told the audience, “I’m sorry to tell you this, but Muhammad Ali just passed away.”
GM Ladyhawke.
The Boxer is one of my all-time favs by Simon and Garfunkel (there are countless others).
Didn’t know there was a Greek Theatre in Berkeley. Wonder if it’s outdoor seating like the one in Griffith Park LA.
A couple more (powerful, IMHO) tweets this morning:
I’m old enough to remember how much Muhammad Ali changed the American conversation and culture on race. He was such a powerful, dynamic person, upholding the dignity and worth of all African Americans, and I might add, of all human beings.
When I used to watch boxing , I was a fan of Muhammad Ali, I did think he was the Greatest of all time. R.I.P Champ.
I guess all Muslims aren’t bad, I see were Trump had something to say about the passing of Ali.
Every couple of weeks or so I’d go to youtube and watch Ali-Foreman, I didn’t watch it so much for the boxing. I’d watch it because I loved the way Ali would revel in his blackness.
Ever notice how many of the true icons white America revels in, all reveled in their blackness?
It’s right before our eyes, white people – there’s no room for hate. Not if we want to truly live among greatness.
Amen!!!!!
HERE’S A WORD TO THOSE OF YOU WHO THINK YOU ARE GONG TO GET INTO MY NEIGHBORHOOD AND DO SOME HARM..YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND YOU ARE IN FOR A BIG AND YOUR LAST SURPRISE!
gm Tod and many thanks NerdyW for bringing us into the new day.
Seems their are 2 things that can replace politicians in the news
1. The weather – rain & more rain down the Eastern Coast of Australia
2. Muhammad Ali
Filled up our 7pm news. I’ve never been a boxing fan but M.A. was one in a million (or 2 or 3). Everyone knew who he was 🙂
Our First Lady looked so happy at the commencement; the crowd looked ecstatic! What a lovely day for all of them.
And I hope all y’all have a quite lovely day today, too! A special weekend hello to Chips, along with our thanks to NW!
Good Morning NW and TOD.
THANK YOU, Nerdy Wonka. So grateful for you.
You’re wonderfully awesome, Meta.
Thank YOU so much.
Hi meta!! Ditto!!
Serena is going to have to dig deep to pull this match out.
looks like serena is not going get the #22 today. bummer.
Sorry to hear that. Come on Serena, I still have faith in you. Get it together for Wimbledon.
President Obama’s sister has been awarded tenure!!
Swoon!!
😀

I LOVE this guy. He is FIERCE.
Trump supporters think that only they (the white man ) built this country.
I loved his speech!

LOVE THOSE PHOTOS….PETE SOUZA HAS A GIFTED EYE…………………..
Hello TODers!
Nerdy, you rock. Thank you!!
Ali, wow! What a legend!
Ali was the epitome of boldness. He spoke truth to power and was not afraid to do so.
My late husband was among his biggest fans. I know he will be happy to see him today.
G’day all. I woke this morning with a tear in my eye and this song played in my mind….I saw Ali in The Rome Olympics-1960 and his first wife was a personal friend…..Fond memories.
This is one of my favorite versions of the song; second only to the great Nancy Wilson! Thank you, my friend…
You are most welcome.
Muhammad Ali didn’t take anything from anyone. This is vintage:
100 degrees expected here in Salem, Oregon today… Yikes!
It’s to be 95 tomorrow here in Missoula. This is crazy. Then it is to cool down to 70 by Wednesday.
We’ve been in a heat wave, too. But thankfully, the fog rolled in today. I can’t tell you how much I love the fog!
Steam billowed out of my head when I read this story yesterday.
Her statement prior to that monster’s sentencing:

Oh my gosh, this has got me tearing up again:
The Truth!
New post.
