“Women Deliver’s 4th Global Conference, taking place 16-19 May 2016, will be the largest gathering on girls’ and women’s health and rights in the last decade and one of the first major global conferences following the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

Great news! I’m sure this conference will receive no coverage in the US media–it’s just women, after all–and Americans will never know how important it is or what comes out of it. It’s no wonder Americans are so ill-informed about the world.

        GM Dr Bob.

Haven’t read the article yet, but relates to the welcome news of this Global Conference.

Anyone who isn’t part of #MaleSupremacy whine-movement knows that women instinctively care about public health issues. #LetGirlsLearn

Thank you JackieG & arapaho for your comments …. as slow and difficult the process has been, women, globally, are rising and that may well be why humanity avoids extinction …. take care … back to work …..

Well, when you think about it, DF, that’s how humanity survived in the first place. If the women didn’t gather food, nurture babies, keep the fires going, mankind would have died out millennia ago. I saw a documentary on agriculture once that said women were the first ones to cultivate plots with seeds they gathered and so they were truly the founders of civilization because cultivation of the soil meant people stayed put and built homes and villages.

“Ataturk insisted on keeping religion out of government affairs—even wrote it into the Turkish Constitution when the republic began in 1923.

Today, this video and Turkey are ridiculing that founding principle, and hurdling toward a theocracy with breakneck speed.

The deluded Turkish soldier may think he is secular. But his officer, his prime minister and his president aren’t, and that doesn’t seem to bother him as much as the secular Kurds do.

But it exposes his rank ignorance, which James Madison, “the father of the [American] Constitution,” felt: it will always bow to knowledge:

      “Knowledge will forever govern ignorance.””

Have a fine day everyone …. bbl ….

Morning all. Woke up to a fog so thick it’s like being enclosed in cotton, so I hope the sun is shining somewhere in these United States. When PBO has “no events scheduled for the day,” you know he’s working on something big and tremendous. Wonder if we’ll ever hear about it.

    • May 12, 2016 at 8:33 am

I know that we must turn the page…but i will so miss having the President in the White House…it will not be the same for me

      • 45 jackiegrumbacher
        May 12, 2016 at 9:26 am

Pf, it will never be the same for any of us, but I think of it the same way I did when our children went off to college. It’s a transition that has to happen as heartbreaking as it. PBO will go on to thrive and if we work to elect a worthy successor to him, then we’ll thrive as well if we give her a chance. The media, Republicans and misogynists in general will have their knives out for HRC and it’s going to be up to us to push back and fight the endless bigotry.

    GM TODville.

Lots of speculation as to why Trump won’t release his tax returns, and IMHO it’s a no-brainer.

    #ItsTheIncomeStupid

Income is really the only financial measure most (uninformed #WhitePowerStatusQuo) Trump supporters understand, and for Trump it will open a window for his supporters that understand that he’s really only an egomaniacal #grifter (aka fraud).

@TimOBrien “saw Trump’s federal tax returns about a decade ago as part of a legal action in which he sued me for libel (the suit was later dismissed)” and “a court order prevents me from speaking or writing about the specifics of what I saw.”

Fortune’s Shawn Tully “noted in March that Trump ‘appears to have overstated his income, by a lot, which could be the reason he has so far tried to avoid releasing his returns.” Tully said that Trump apparently boosted his income in the documents by conflating his various businesses’ revenue with his personal income.'”

I still believe that Trump has absolutely ZERO desire to be President (waaaay too much work). For him his candidacy is merely a Reality Show motivated by revenge and ego. (Posted on a previous TOD thread:)

    • 48 arapaho415
      May 12, 2016 at 8:54 am

Forgot to mention that for Trump, income is as personal as the size of his hands — size is the thing that truly matters to #TinyHandsTrump #FraudsterTrump.

This is so true, Pf. Our FLOTUS understood that having a garden and growing your own food, gives you power, rather than subjecting your health and nutrition to the marketing decisions of grocery stores. In even the smallest of spaces, people can grow nutritious foods and feel that they’re controlling their own destinies. That’s one step that leads to many other empowering moments in people’s lives. It’s not just a garden–it’s the empowering that FLOTUS was teaching.

I would like to see Trayvon’s family get any money that Zimmerman makes as the result of Trayvon’s death. They could do whatever they want to with the money. If they don’t want the money, donate it.

              May 12, 2016 at 10:09 am

I’m with you that that criminal idiot shouldn’t get to profit from his actions (he has profited enough already). However, I couldn’t see myself (and can’t see his mother) accepting/directing anything that Zimmerman has even a remote hand in. When you think about it, anyone likely to bid on that gun is more than likely to be a hate-filled person. Personally I would shudder to think of having my name linked to having dealings with people who took joy in the murder of my child, no matter where I could donate the money.

They won’t call out Trump – no way they will attack Bernie. Media doing all it can to ensure HRC is not the next President. I haven’t paid for a newspaper in years, refuse to pay to read any online news & don’t watch political TV (free to air – we don’t have cable). I used to have respect for the media – but the past 15 years – right wing hacks – all of them. See their empires fading away & doing ANYTHING to keep control of the world. Not going to work.

      • 109 carolyn
        May 12, 2016 at 10:55 am

Yes, what a magnificent team they would have been. However, I understand completely why Joe Biden couldn’t run, as can anyone who has been through the deep levels of grief he has. I was about a month behind him…..and it is not only the actual death, but the months of caring and crying and praying that precede that event. I am ten months out now, and am finally feeling, some days, like I am out of the fog, but then it comes back and envelopes me. I have hardly any memory of last fall; it’s like a big blank wall. I have had trouble remembering people’s names…..never was a problem before……things happened and I could not remember them. Grief does a total number on us physically, emotionally, psychologically, spiritually……every way. Fortunately, Joe has had a strong support system, and has a strong faith. I have been blessed that way too. But there are alone times when the freshness of the loss just rages in and overwhelms and you are incapable of coherence, thought or caring. I have thought of him every day through this and marveled at how he has functioned in public. I love Joe. He to me represents the very best we have, but I think if he had tried, he would have completely fallen apart, so deep is his grief for Beau.

        • 110 mtmarilyn
          May 12, 2016 at 11:20 am

I also so understand why he didn’t run, I just also understand what we have all lost. With both the loss of Beau future life, senate, President etc and our loss of Joe’s Presidency. The closest I have come for this great of loss is my parents. The loss of your spouse and the loss of a child are losses incaparable. What I do know is that what Joe will do now will be something that fills his heart.

I am so glad you have been with us Carolyn. I always include you in my meditations as I do all of TOD. We are community.

          GM Carolyn.

Love all your contributions here, and am grieving with you for your loss of your better half. 😦

Losing your life partner, parent, best friend, etc. is a complete shock your system. Know nothing about psychology, but the mind copes with deep shock in a PTSD (not sure why this is called a “disorder,” seems like a fact of life to me.

After the 1994 Northridge earthquake (I worked a short block from the Northridge Fashion Mall where a worker was killed in the parking structure; just down the road an apartment building collapsed, killing residents — several overpasses on the closest freeway (unfortunately called the Ronald Reagan freeway 😦 ) collapsed onto the freeway below… I had trouble remembering (internal, boring) stuff at work that I knew like the back of my hand before the quake.

We had so many aftershocks we were constantly anxious, so I think I suffered from mild PTSD for a few months after the quake; once the daily doses of aftershocks subsided my memory was fine…

Sincere condolences again for your loss of a fine man, but am heartened that you had @VP providing comfort to all those grieving during such a heartbreaking time for him.

The French government is facing a vote of no confidence after forcing through a controversial labour reform bill.

Protests over the bill have broken out across France, with more expected as parliament votes on Thursday.

Unions and student groups have blocked roads and barricaded schools in the western cities of Nantes and Rennes.

The opposition needs 288 votes for the no-confidence motion to succeed, but they are thought to be around 40 votes short of that total ahead of the vote.

Some lawmakers within President Hollande’s own Socialist Party are expected to vote with the motion, in protest as what they see as legislation that is too pro-business.

The new law will affect the power of the labour unions, the rules on firing staff, and the length of the working week – among France’s most cherished icons.
