Jackie, believe it or not, I was about to go to Dallas Theological Seminary back in 1994. But I changed my mind. My favorite Aunt start calling me Preacher Man when I was 8 years old and she still doesn’t today, and I’m 59. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Morning all. Chips, I hope your mom is getting closer to the day she can come home. It’s another rainy, dreary day and will be again tomorrow on my birthday. Bummer. Hope our not so esteemed friends in the media spare us any more Jane or Bernie interviews. That, at least, would make the day brighter.

I so love what PBO said about “not giving away your power.” I think all Democratic canvassers and campaign workers should carry that message on a t-shirt or pin–“Don’t give away your power. Vote.” I’ve been trying for years to deliver the message to our local Latino friends that voting is ‘power.” Our logo has been–“Pueblo; Latino; Futuro; Poder; Voto!

South Africa corruption case blow for Jacob Zuma.

South Africa’s High Court has ruled that a decision to drop 783 corruption charges against President Jacob Zuma should be reviewed.

The charges were dropped just weeks before the 2009 election which led to Mr Zuma becoming president.

Judge Aubrey Ledwaba said the decision by the chief state prosecutor at the time, Mokotedi Mpshe, was “irrational”.

The case, brought by the opposition Democratic Alliance, opens the way for prosecutors to reinstate the charges.

Mr Zuma always denied the allegations which are linked to a government arms deal in 1999 worth billions of dollars.

Last week, a judge-led commission of inquiry found no evidence of corruption or fraud by any government officials at the time.

Judge Ledwaba said Mr Mpshe had “found himself under pressure” when he decided to discontinue the prosecution and “consequently made an irrational decision”.

“Considering the situation in which he found himself, Mr Mpshe ignored the importance of the oath of office which commanded him to act independently and without fear and favour.

“It is thus our view that the envisaged prosecution against Mr Zuma was not tainted by the allegations against Mr McCarthy.

“Mr Zuma should face the charges as outlined in the indictment.”

This is the latest legal setback for the South African president.

US ‘drops planned Pakistan F-16 fighter jet subsidy’

The US will no longer subsidise the sale of eight F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan, a senior state department official has told the BBC.

The decision means that Pakistan will have to pay more than $700m (£480m) – two-and-a-half times the original cost – if it wishes to buy the aircraft.

It comes after Congress refused to approve funding for the deal.

Some US lawmakers had accused Pakistan of not doing enough to fight militants. India also objected to the sale.

However, Pakistan has argued that the jets are needed for anti-terror operations, and so the US should help with funding the purchase.

People close to the deal say it is highly unlikely that Pakistan will be willing to pay the full cost of the fighter jets, so it seems to be off for all practical purposes.

Journalist who profiled Melania Trump hit with barrage of antisemitic abuse
Julia Ioffe has received disturbing calls and online abuse since profiling Donald Trump’s wife for GQ, and likens antisemitism to ‘shit I’ve only seen in Russia’

Journalist Julia Ioffe has experienced this kind of harassment before: in Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

In the 24 hours since her profile of Donald Trump’s wife, Melania, appeared in GQ magazine, the Russian-American journalist has received a torrent of antisemitic, vitriolic and threatening messages from supporters of the Republican frontrunner.

In the deeply disturbing response to her piece, Ioffe said she sees a frightening future of what freedom of the press – and the country – might look like under a president Trump.

“What happens if Donald Trump is elected?” Ioffe said. “We’ve seen the way he bids his supporters to attack the media, his proposal to change libel laws to make it easier to sue journalists.”

      April 29, 2016 at 9:27 am

People who blithely say they could ‘live’ with a Trump presidency have no idea what they’re talking about. Everything we take for granted in a ‘free’ society would be at risk. Americans have never known what a truly Fascist government would be like, but it would be an ugly and destructive force.

Bernie Believers Urge Independent Bid Over DNC Corruption

In light of dishonest party politics, over one-third of voters would support a third-party candidate

    By Michael Sainato • 04/27/16 9:00am

In an interview with Politico reporter Glenn Thrush after last week’s New York Primary, a senior Clinton aide reportedly used profane language with regards to Bernie Sanders. Such disrespect has been carried out not only by Hillary Clinton’s campaign, but by the Democratic National Committee itself. Since the beginning of the Democratic Primary, the attitude has seemed to be, “How dare Mr. Sanders challenge Ms. Clinton?” This complete disregard of democracy has manifested over and over again—from the Democratic National Committee’s overt favoritism for Ms. Clinton to rampant reports of voter suppression across the country throughout the primaries.

A 2015 Gallup poll found 43 percent of Americans identify politically as Independent, and it is likely that the Democratic and Republican primaries only further discourage these voters from affiliating with either party. The presidency will largely be predicated on who can court the most Independent voters, and Ms. Clinton faces an uphill battle. Many disenfranchised Democrats and Independent voters will either write in Mr. Sanders’ name in November, or vote for Green Party candidate Jill Stein—who more closely resembles the campaign platform of Mr. Sanders than Ms. Clinton, and who received over 500,000 votes in 2012.

In an interview with Grist in early March, Ms. Stein said, “You can’t really have a revolutionary campaign inside a counter-revolutionary party.” Many of Mr. Sanders’ supporters share this sentiment, and it could cost Democrats the 2016 presidential election, or give rise to a third political party. From the eruption of the Republican Tea Party in the wake of president Barack Obama’s 2008 election, to the rise of the Occupy Wall Street movement following the 2008 economic recession, thousands of people who once identified as Republicans and Democrats are flirting with the idea of supporting a third party candidate.

I stop by to give hugs and to collect a few (well, many). . . day before yesterday demolition on an empty lot 1/3 block from my window, where I’ve watched birds nesting in 5 beautiful trees for the past 3 springtime’s, has begun. I am devastated. I hear the birds in panic, as they reluctantly abandon their nests. With all the groundcover and undergrowth gone, today I hear the chainsaws getting to work on eliminating the trees which have been an energy exchange source for me for 2 1/2 years. Work will soon begin to excavate the lot, as a 7 story apartment building, taller than the one I’m in now, goes under construction. I am devastated. No more wondering if I should move, I absolutely MUST get out of here, this project will be years in completion. Prayers, Light, and send me lots of love, I beg. ❤ _/|\_ ❤ ⏳ 🕰 ⏱ 🕰

Islamic State turns to selling fish, cars to offset oil losses: report
    Thu Apr 28, 2016 5:25pm

Islamic State earns millions of dollars a month running car dealerships and fish farms in Iraq, making up for lower oil income after its battlefield losses, Iraqi judicial authorities said on Thursday.

Security experts once estimated the ultra-radical Islamist group’s annual income at $2.9 billion, much of it coming from oil and gas installations in Iraq and Syria.

Jim DeMint: Voter ID Helps Elect ‘More Conservative Candidates’

SUBMITTED BY Miranda Blue on Thursday, 4/28/2016 10:45 am

Jim DeMint, the former South Carolina senator and Tea Party firebrand who is now the president of the Heritage Foundation, became the latest in a string of conservatives to admit that restrictive voting laws such as voter ID requirements are an attempt to help Republicans win elections, telling a St. Louis radio host yesterday that voter ID laws help elect “more conservative candidates.”

Talk radio host Jamie Allman asked DeMint about Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s move to restore the voting rights of people in the state who had served time for felonies, a draconian restriction that disproportionately affected African-Americans by design. DeMint responded that McAuliffe’s action was “awfully suspicious” and tied it to what he claimed was a Democratic plan to get votes from “illegals” and through “voter fraud.”

“So it’s really a bigger issue,” he added, “and that’s why the left fights voter ID or any kind of picture ID to know that it is actually a registered voter who’s voting. And so it’s something we’re working on all over the country, because in the states where they do have voter ID laws you’ve seen, actually, elections begin to change towards more conservative candidates.”
