I can’t wait to hear what President Obama says to the people of Cuba! I predict that at least half of Cuba will be in love with our President by the time AF1 takes off.

This is horrific NCLB and my heart goes out to those who are injured and the families whose loved ones were killed. Then I saw that Trump was immediately exploiting this tragedy on twitter because he always manages to reach new levels of despicable behavior. I’m sure our President will make a special statement today.

        GM JackieG.

Sorry to hear about your lingering cold — they’re so damn annoying, I do my best every Winter to try and avoid catching (and hope a lot), and am so grateful when it doesn’t turn into something worse (which happened 20 years ago, turned into bronchitis/asthma [never had asthma before or after, knock on wood] and ended up in the hospital. 😦

Absolutely hate being shocked upon waking, hearing about still more unspeakable acts of violence.

I’ve never been to Europe, but thought they had similar security procedures as US. How could something like this happen at a departure gate?

Trump is a danger because he thinks he’s the smartest kid in the class. He goes to his brain for foreign policy advice?!?!?!? Therefore, he would probably make national security decisions — probably knee-jerk decisions — based on the information in *his head* rather than pay attention to intelligence information; especially if it doesn’t agree with what’s in his head.

He makes statements like this, yet who do the various media outlets have on the phone to get their thoughts? God save us!

There were two good comments over at BJ about the FBI/Apple situation:

    Comment 1:

    randy khan says:

    March 22, 2016 at 12:47 am

    @🌷 Martin:

It occurred to me a little while back that the FBI totally miscalculated. They thought they were dealing with a phone company – the phone companies always do what law enforcement wants so long as there’s a court order to protect them from lawsuits because the phone companies don’t care about their customers. Instead, they were dealing with a technology company, and those companies don’t really care if law enforcement likes them, but they do care – a lot – about what their customers think.

Also, and this is consistent with my experience in other areas, I think the FBI was totally outgunned on the technical issues.

    Comment 2:

    🌷 Martin says:

    March 22, 2016 at 1:12 am

    @randy khan:

Instead, they were dealing with a technology company

Worse, they were dealing with Apple. Apple isn’t like most other tech companies because one of Apple’s core premises has always been trust with users. Devices are predictably (high) priced, predictably reliable, no surprises in terms of crapware, carrier influence, and so on. It’s a lot harder to stop being an Apple customer than it is to start. Google and Facebooks core premise is that everyone is a customer because it’s free – users have pretty low expectations when they aren’t paying anything. They measure their customer bases in % of humans alive. Both are approaching 25% of all humans.Their services are compelling because everyone uses them.

Apple relies on holding onto a smaller number of customers (still closing in on a billion, however) but having them come back year after year. That’s what the Apple stores do, and it drives so many of their decisions. Apple was going to fight to the death over this because they know from experience that trust is so hard to win back once lost, and because they have so much now invested in their security push (nobody else is designing custom hardware for security, and they’ve largely reinvented how to do secure transactions within ApplePay).

But Apple was also a bad target because Apple executives honest to god believe in this cause and they literally have more money than the US government to fight this. DOJ budget is ~$25B. That’s half a year’s profits for Apple. I know that they are working furiously to make sure that under no circumstances can they unlock the next iPhone (already pretty close with the 5S onward). I also believe that if the US passes a law mandating that they engineer a back door into the device that they will move the company abroad.

But that may also have been part of the FBIs plan. The FBI has to suspect that there is nothing of value on that phone, so winning or losing on that narrow issue is likely not important. What’s more important is gaining the means to unlock the next device, which might be a lot more urgent. Today this really felt like a play to force Congress to act. Not sure that’s going to work either, though.

Interesting move by the FBI to announce that they may have hacked Apple’s IPhone. I don’t know if the FBI is bluffing or not, but now they might have to show their hand in which case Apple must now reengineer their product. Even if the FBI hasn’t hacked Apple’s IPhone in my opinion the FBI has swayed the public opinion to their side.

      • March 22, 2016 at 10:19 am

i still feel that this is a phony issue…Americans give up their privacy rights everyday when they go online…how many read the privacy pages…how many just check the lil box and go on to the next page…how many read the fine print on credit card statements…

Some Americans are funny…they would rather someone else get blown up then give up their so called privacy rights…

      March 22, 2016 at 10:05 am

all that apple’s posturing about ‘caring for your privacy, blah, blah, blah’ notwithstanding, wonder what will be apple’s reaction if there was an attack in their facility and the fbi recovered the terrorist’s iphone.

My thoughts goes out to the people of Belgium. Just a year ago right around this time, I stayed in Brussels and London visiting relatives/friends. I traveled the Eurostar blissfully; not once did I fear for my safety at that time. Now a year later, how things have changed. 😦

Yes, all of Belgium is closed down this morning, including the EU buildings and all of the public transportation [trains, buses and airports], and all underpasses on the roads, so in effect all the roads are closed.
I came here today, however, to ask what the h is going on with Bill Clinton condemning O’s administration for the last “8” years as “awful”.? The man is going to be sure Hillary is never elected President. Couldn’t believe that when I read it.

100% taken out of context – he sure could have said it differently but he was attacking the dysfunctional congress not the President.
Don’t ever believe the GOP and the US political pundits.
