“Tuition to U.S. universities has surged 500 percent since 1985 and continues to rise. But German universities offer free education to everyone — including Americans. The number of American students enrolled in German universities has risen steadily in recent years. Currently, an estimated 10,000 U.S. citizens are studying at German colleges — nearly all of them for free, according to NBC News. German universities in most federal states have traditionally been free for German citizens as well as many foreigners, including many American, Chinese and British students. One reason German taxpayers foot the bill is to help attract more skilled workers to the country. In recent years, German companies have been unable to fill thousands of jobs because of a lack of qualified applicants. Although Germany has one of the world’s most generous welfare systems, its resources are increasingly strained as more workers retire. The central European economic powerhouse also has one of the world’s lowest fertility rates — making the problem even worse…..

….Back in 2012, Lars Funk, a representative for the Association of German Engineers (VDI), explained that “the current labor shortage in Germany could inflict lasting damage.” According to Funk, foreign students could help fill that gap. Since then, the problem has increased. To attract talent from abroad, many Germany universities have started to offer courses on an undergraduate as well as postgraduate level in English. According to a data analysis by the website studyportals.eu — which collects information on available college courses all over the world — there are at least about 900 entirely English-language courses in Germany. The subjects include social sciences, politics and engineering — a particular strength of the country’s education system. Getting into those courses is easier than one might assume: In some cases, a potential student doesn’t even have to submit a formal application. There are other countries that offer even more such courses, including the Netherlands, as well as English-speaking Ireland and the United Kingdom. However, Germany is the only country without any tuition fees….continued”

I told my evangelical brother this because his daughter is in high school and he’s worried about sending her to college. When I told them he could send her to Germany he snapped “Who’s paying for it”? I told him that Germany citizens are paying for it! They don’t mind paying for college as long as there are jobs and these graduates will most likely STAY because they are not loaded down with debt. If Americans made college free to American students and charged high amounts to wealthy foreign students who come here anyway, then we would have a well educated workforce and people like Apple, Google, and Microsoft wouldn’t have to hire foreigners in America. We
are so cheap of a country, always wanting someone else to pay or complain about the price of something.

One of my daughters (I have two grown daughters and two grown sons) is living and working in Germany. After going through college, law school and graduate school in the US totally on academic scholarships she got her dream top law firm job in DC. The problem was even after three years there she had no time. She would call me on the West Coast going home from work in a taxi at 1am her time.
She found a program offering young professionals a year+ in Germany to learn the language, work in the government sector a few months then the private sector a few months too. She ended up in Munich loving it there especially the work hours and six weeks vacation every year. It took her a solid year to get through the red tape to snag a top notch job there even though the company wanted her. She took a nanny job and ski instructor job as well as studying German the year she waited to get hired. She has gotten a couple promotions in the four years she has been there now.
I see her more now that she gets all those vacations than I did when she was in DC with no time. She is about to marry a very sweet German guy. They made sure to get a three bedroom apartment telling me there will be a bedroom I can stay in when I visit them. I told them if Donald Trump wins the Presidency I may move in with them! LOL

Wow! Thanks for sharing your personal experience….If I could start from scratch this is definitely a route I would seriously consider (which prompted my interest in the article to begin with) …..unfortunately I’m stuck with a UG Business Degree from Auburn, a bunch of student loan debt that led me down to several job opportunities, none of which were personally satisfying or had the job security I needed to settle down permanently. No I’m kind of starting from scratch tying to get accepted into an Imaging Science program (they only take 15 folks every two years)….if that doesn’t work out I’ll probably go back into a sales job. Time will tell 😕

“For months, Germans have been engaged in a heated debate about how to assimilate an unprecedented wave of more than a million refugees, but Firas Alshater just wants them to lighten up. The Syrian asylum seeker has become Germany’s latest social media sensation by launching a web series presenting life in his newly adopted country from his own, very funny, point of view. Hundreds of thousands Internet users have seen Firas Alshater’s short clip, in which he pokes fun of German quirks like a perceived tendency for needing a long time to warm up to new people and circumstances. It shows Alshater standing in Berlin’s central Alexanderplatz, blindfolded and with his arms wide open. A sign next to him reads “I’m a Syrian refugee. I trust you. Do you trust me? Give me a hug!” But while the fluffy-bearded 26-year-old looks more teddy bearish than terrorist, at first nobody takes him up on the offer. Only after a woman finally breaks the ice do other passers-by follow suit, one man even leaping into Alshater’s arms. The video then shows the Syrian comically running away from hordes of hug-obsessed Germans. “I learned that Germans need some time, but then nothing can stop them. Therefore, I think that integration will work out,” Alshater said, summing up his experiment into the camera….

….Alshater, who came to Germany two and a half years ago after being imprisoned and tortured as an opponent of the Assad regime, uploaded the clip last Friday. When he returned to his job at a film production company on Monday, several journalists were already waiting for him. His phone hasn’t stopped ringing since and his inbox is overflowing. Everyone in Germany, it seems, wants to get to know the guy dubbed the country’s “first refugee YouTuber.” “I never thought this would happen. I uploaded the video for no particular reason and never expected to become famous,” Alshater said in a recent phone conversation. He thinks the success of his video can partly be explained by the fact that many Germans are fed up with the gravity of the integration debate, especially since the mass assaults on women in the West German city of Cologne on New Year’s Eve by gangs of men, some of whom are believed to have been asylum seekers….continued”

I don’t watch either but I listen sometimes in my car on Sirius Radio. Apparently people were complaining about the constant coverage of Trump so they started showing Hillary and Bernie but not with the same fever that they show Trump. Today I had to go to the DC Tax office for some Co. business and I was there waiting for my number to be called for about 45 minutes. During that time CNN continually covered the Christie endorsement non stop. It became nauseating after a few minutes. They just kept bringing on pundit after pundit. It’s as if they are obsessed with covering this man and it will only get worse if he wins the nomination.

Under the where have you been category, UCLA did a recent study that shows Films that have a more diverse cast make more money. IN fact if the cast is 50/50 non-white to white the money made increases. These easily garnered facts just underline how egregious is #Oscarssowhite. We know that social progress is only made in this country when it is shown that money can be made. FOX tv learned this lesson early after holding focus groups a few years ago and now, many of their popular shows are very diverse, like Sleepy Hollow, Rosewood, and of course the almost all Black Empire. Few of today’s young people are interested in anything that does not reflect the kinds of people that make up their families and friends. Many older people, especially those who are very engaged in the world, feel the same. It is so funny when I hear my friends or family members who are not A-A complain that an event or some other occasion is too white.
CBS (the one that Jay Leno referred to as the Caucasian Broadcasting Station) and NBC need to get their act together; ABC is improving, but they still have a way to go to have programs that reflect the multi-cultural world that the US has always been.
I will not be watching the Oscars because it is a boring show that most times honors films that I have never seen and do not intend to see. The few times that I have watched the show it was only the segments that featured musical performances. I do not think boycotting is the best answer for those who are in the industry. They should shw up with their beautiful black and brown faces, beautifully dressed, heads held high and making their opinions known as they are interviewed on the red carpet. You cannot win the game if you get off the field.

Academics like this Dr. Steve Perry are really pissed because PBO ignores them. He knows a shyster and a pretender when he sees one and he does not have time for their egos and laziness. Throughout our history as a people in this country, we have had these collaborators who allow themselves to be used as weapons against other A-A people because they think that they will be rewarded in some way. Without fail, when they are no longer useful, they are betrayed and many of them cannot go home again to the communities that they were used against. J C Watts, Michael Steel, Dr. Carson, that Velma woman who was so disappointed in PBO (where is she now?) and so many others. IMO, MHP left before she was fired. I do not watch msnbc, but from the comments I have read here about her and her show over the years, she allowed herself to be used for quite sometime. Her situation is an old familiar story.

Trump is the GOP’s Frankenstein monster. Now he’s strong enough to destroy the party.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/trump-is-the-gops-frankenstein-monster-now-hes-strong-enough-to-destroy-the-party/2016/02/25/3e443f28-dbc1-11e5-925f-1d10062cc82d_story.html

We are supposed to believe that Trump’s legion of “angry” people are angry about wage stagnation. No, they are angry about all the things Republicans have told them to be angry about these past 7½ years, and it has been Trump’s good fortune to be the guy to sweep them up and become their standard-bearer. He is the Napoleon who has harvested the fruit of the revolution.
    .
    .
So what to do now? The Republicans’ creation will soon be let loose on the land, leaving to others the job the party failed to carry out. For this former Republican, and perhaps for others, the only choice will be to vote for Hillary Clinton. The party cannot be saved, but the country still can be.

Ok, so don’t hate me for saying this, but I think it is great what Dr Steve Perry tweeted. Look at all the great responses from everyone on all the wonderful things our dear PBO has done for Black people and others in this country. And then think of who might be Dr Perry’s followers or who is receiving retweets of these Tweets. All of those people are getting educated as to the truth of what PBO has been doing for the past 7 years, even if the MSM refuses to cover it. I call if free advertising. And I am sending positive vibes to Dr Perry to tweet another inane comment so we can provide even more education on the fabulousness of our president to even more people. Whatever and however to get the truth out to the masses.

And a very Happy Birthday to GGail!
