Same here. Just heard someone (a female, no idea who it was) say, “He will certainly go down as one of the great justices.” REALLY! All depends on how ‘great’ is defined. My question on last thread was–He died in his sleep last night. Why hold the news for so long?!?!
My better angel is reminding me of how I would feel if this was about Justices Ginberg, Kagan or Sotomeyer. He has family and friends who love him and colleagues who admire him; RIP.
I am not sad about this! This realistically changes the balance and swing in the court with the eight members. Scalia was a strong persuader and arm twister from what I’ve read.
I’m trying to do what my mother always told me. If you can’t say anything nice, say nothing at all. Sigh. If PBO nominates a middle of the road justice, there would be complaints from both sides. I heard that the process may be delayed until after the election in November.
I wonder if Clarence Thomas will step down now that he doesn’t have a best friend. I don’t see him being as chummy with the other four conservative judges. I think Anton protected him a lot.
I was coming over to post this news when I saw the new thread. The Republican led Senate will not pass ANY nominee submitted by President Obama, which is going to make Democratic turnout in November all the more crucial. It’s going to be a knock down drag out fight for the presidency with this seat at stake. Damn everyone who decided to stay home in 2014 when Democratic Senate seats were in the balance.
Actually (eek), I believe he was born in the same city in New Jersey where I was (eek – gotta go wash my hands), and then grew up in New York where they have all those “values.” In fact, last year he went back to that area of New Jersey to swear in a local township mayor (only spotted that because my son went to school with her, and I worked with her dad, all the while not knowing they were a family of Republicans).
i see “the news” people are already trying to set the national discourse about this in the republicans favor. multiple people already saying how our president can’t be “partisan” now and better not try to nominate a liberal, and should probably not try to nominate anyone at all. our national “news” is public enemy #1.
That’s why they took so long to report it – they had to get their pro-GOP talking points in order. This is a BAD news for the GOP, and there’s no way to spin it.
Not like the 1st time a Supreme Court Justice has had died. Q: And when they did — did America wait for a year to have a new Justice?
Right now we have a 4-4 gridlock and will still have to get something done, some unforeseen.
GOP insisting on everything they want is sooooooooo old.
yes and yes. i see canada ted cruz seemed to get the memo and tweets out the exact same storyline that’s dominating “the news” already. amazing how quickly they can coordinate the talking points, and unfortunately so much of the public uncritically follows suit.
what will you do to stop our lawless, uppity president from doing his constitutional duty and nominating a new s.c. justice? (something similar to this for sure)
Agree, RanMan. Though I think AG Holder would be an excellent choice, as well.
What the Republicans better keep at the forefront of their mind are two simple facts:
1. They block President Obama’s nomination and it is going to become, if not the top, close to the top issue that they will pay for on 8 Nov 2016 – at both the Executive and Legislative level;
2. They block PBO’s nomination and he’s not able to fill the slot, they get to ponder Justice-candidate Barack Hussein Obama nominated by President Hillary Clinton (my preferred outcome 🙂 ).
yep. might as well pick someone who will motivate the democratic base, since they won’t vote on anyone he picks. i vote for a.g. loretta lynch! she was just vetted and passed the republican tests.
She’s such a lovely, vivacious and extraordinarily talented five year-old!!!! 🙂 I also immensely enjoyed the video of when she met PBO on the Ellen Show. Totally warms my heart – thanks vc for posting. 🙂
Hopef, the video with PBO & Ellen was the first time I’d met Macey. I ❤ ❤ how she greeted POTUS with such obvious warmth and joy! She's a very happy and charming little miss – I wish her the very best of everything in life.
just when you thought the crazy talk couldn’t get any crazier…tonight will be jaw dropping in its stupidity, and i’m sure the moderators will be playing along.
She tweeted that piece of s&*t Bernie ad – previous thread – and is proclaiming herself a fan of his in her TL, Chips …. really gotta get back to work but wanted to answer your ? before departing … take care ….
Guy’s not even in his grave, and Trump’s figuring out how it works for him (as if he were a conservative himself, which he isn’t). Of course, that’s Trump’s total bottom line. Ugh.
Seeking higher ground (for me), I think I’ll second part of what Fr. James Martin – that nice Jesuit priest who’s often on MSNBC and is much involved in social media – wrote:
“I rarely agreed with his opinions or decisions but respected his intellect and industry and pray that he may rest in peace.”
This seems like good karma to wake up to – good to see the GOP showing the world how they are so unfit to run the country. No President has ever had to cope with a such a congress & no congress has ever been so against the American People.
American politics is just so damn ugly, vicious, selfish, backwards and mostly useless: the legacy Nixon, Reagan, Bush (both of them) and their handlers and acolytes.
Wow is right.
OMG! Just logged on; what a shock!
Hmmm……
I. Am. Going. To. Try. To. Be. Good.
I’m trying….I trying…
(It’s haaaaaaaaaard)
Same here. Just heard someone (a female, no idea who it was) say, “He will certainly go down as one of the great justices.” REALLY! All depends on how ‘great’ is defined. My question on last thread was–He died in his sleep last night. Why hold the news for so long?!?!
Notifying family, PBO, the other justices, congress, etc.
Yes and as hf points out, GOP and media needed to get their talking points aligned.
True…
Waking up and seeing the heading without the tweet – you were perfect – still thinking about the good 🙂
I hope you appreciate my restraint, I could have been exceptionally tacky and titled the post: “Paaaaaaaaaarty.”
I would have – Dems are just too nice – if an Obama appointee had died the GOP wannabes would be dancing on the grave.
Me too.
My better angel is reminding me of how I would feel if this was about Justices Ginberg, Kagan or Sotomeyer. He has family and friends who love him and colleagues who admire him; RIP.
well I wasn’t when I read about it.
Well, that just means I’m a better person than you, sherijr! 😆
damn right you are! 🙂 🙂
wow indeed!!!!! Cases now before the court starts get interesting!!!!!
Wow indeed. Confirmed?
I also look forward to the republicans shitting themselves in the upcoming ptresidential and senate elections.!!!!!
doesn’t look like Obama will name the replacement. I expect the Republican primary season to get even crazier, now.
“doesn’t look like Obama will name the replacement.”
What makes you say that?
Something in the article made reference to waiting on the next president to name a replacement.
vc – which article are you referring to?
Nevermind – I realize it’s the BBC article! But they are speculating big time tho….
Yes, but sadly one has to admit that given the way Republicans have behaved throughout PBO’s terms their speculation doesn’t seem far-fetched.
That is BS. Pres Obama will most certainly nominate a successor. Getting it passed may be difficult. He is not going to pass up this opportunity.
GA BillR.
Yep.
We all know its best to IGNORE media speculation, which is wrong more often than right.
We also know PBO is a DOER and a CHESSMASTER, sees many moves beyond what is visible to the (lazy) onlooker (MSM).
PBO will nominate a successor — one that may further tear the GOP to shreds.
I am not sad about this! This realistically changes the balance and swing in the court with the eight members. Scalia was a strong persuader and arm twister from what I’ve read.
Maybe the Bernbots/bros will vote Hillary now because SCOTUS is very important for them.
Wow just wow. Now things really get interesting.
I’m trying to do what my mother always told me. If you can’t say anything nice, say nothing at all. Sigh. If PBO nominates a middle of the road justice, there would be complaints from both sides. I heard that the process may be delayed until after the election in November.

The 79-year-old died in his sleep last night after a day of quail hunting …..
😕
Extremely strenuous quail hunting, I guess…
🙂 Would it be wrong to say quails are partying the world over?
What happened to that “trying to be good”. Glad I didn’t even try.
I didn’t last long, 99ts 😳
With Dick Cheney?
Ha! Hmm….. does Dick have an alibi???
Was Cheney there? lolololol

Not surprising….
So Ted Cruz wants Hillary Clinton to nominate the next Justice. How sweet of him.
Lol
🙂
But Ted….. He was born and raised in New York City……
Actually (eek), I believe he was born in the same city in New Jersey where I was (eek – gotta go wash my hands), and then grew up in New York where they have all those “values.” In fact, last year he went back to that area of New Jersey to swear in a local township mayor (only spotted that because my son went to school with her, and I worked with her dad, all the while not knowing they were a family of Republicans).
maybe wash feet as well
Scalia was a hero to whom? You right wing wackos. I mean him no disrespect, may he rest in peace.
i see “the news” people are already trying to set the national discourse about this in the republicans favor. multiple people already saying how our president can’t be “partisan” now and better not try to nominate a liberal, and should probably not try to nominate anyone at all. our national “news” is public enemy #1.

Aahh…….good point, hf. Bet you are right. The media and the GOp had to get their messaging lined up.
Yes indeed tnmtngirl!
Not like the 1st time a Supreme Court Justice has had died. Q: And when they did — did America wait for a year to have a new Justice?
Right now we have a 4-4 gridlock and will still have to get something done, some unforeseen.
GOP insisting on everything they want is sooooooooo old.
Yes, it is, 4 more. You actually have to “fight” the media to function in our democracy. Everything is weighted to the right.
yes and yes. i see canada ted cruz seemed to get the memo and tweets out the exact same storyline that’s dominating “the news” already. amazing how quickly they can coordinate the talking points, and unfortunately so much of the public uncritically follows suit.
Our President can nominate who ever he want, to hell with the sorry ass Donald Trump media.
Read some of these comments. Good, Americans are dumb
Anyone want to guess the first question at tonight’s debate?
BENGHAZI!1!1!
Sorry; try again…
what will you do to stop our lawless, uppity president from doing his constitutional duty and nominating a new s.c. justice? (something similar to this for sure)
Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!
IMO, Loretta Lynch will be an outstanding choice.
I second that!!
Yea, but since PBO has nominated two women already (to avoid cries of reverse discrimination) I’m speculating he may go for a male.
Agree, RanMan. Though I think AG Holder would be an excellent choice, as well.
What the Republicans better keep at the forefront of their mind are two simple facts:

2. They block PBO’s nomination and he’s not able to fill the slot, they get to ponder Justice-candidate Barack Hussein Obama nominated by President Hillary Clinton (my preferred outcome 🙂 ).
Now, back to work !!!!!
PBO has said on more than one occasion that he isn’t interested in being on the Supreme Court. Say’s it’s too “monastic.”
Excellent analysis Bob. 👍👌
No way is PBO going to pass up this opportunity. If the Rs filibuster, that becomes a big election issue.
yep. might as well pick someone who will motivate the democratic base, since they won’t vote on anyone he picks. i vote for a.g. loretta lynch! she was just vetted and passed the republican tests.
EXACTLY! Thank you Bill for so succinctly stating what I’ve been thinking…
The Donald won’t sleep well tonight…
The Donald sees this right….a back step for the RW…and step forward for “We The People”
Totally O/T, but some of you will get a smile from this.
😀 😀 I just finished watching this – Macey is a hooooot….and so very appreciative!
If you need a couple of healthy laughs check out this video of her visit to the White House. 😀
She's a very happy and charming little miss – I wish her the very best of everything in life.
that was great…
🙂
just when you thought the crazy talk couldn’t get any crazier…tonight will be jaw dropping in its stupidity, and i’m sure the moderators will be playing along.
Appears KARMA WON AGAIN ….. that will be my only comment on the demise of a truly monstrous person …
As to Bernie’s usurpation of Dr King’s legacy ….
And, Goldie Taylor better be very watchful for mother karma paying a visit ….
Hope all of you are enjoying your Saturday … back to work …….
What did Taylor say, Bob??
She tweeted that piece of s&*t Bernie ad – previous thread – and is proclaiming herself a fan of his in her TL, Chips …. really gotta get back to work but wanted to answer your ? before departing … take care ….
Oh really? Ah well, I was done with her a long time ago, this puts the icing on the cake. Thanks Bob!
No having a shame to politicize the death while the body is still warm.
Guy’s not even in his grave, and Trump’s figuring out how it works for him (as if he were a conservative himself, which he isn’t). Of course, that’s Trump’s total bottom line. Ugh.

Will be interesting to see what the President says….
His statement’s coming up pretty quickly, I hear, per MSNBC.
Justice Scalia served from 1986 according to his profile.
Agree with Kyle.
Bet PBO nominates a pro-life Republican (plenty of those in CA, but GOP would rather our state sink into the Pacific).
And watch Cruz and Rubio on the hot seat for opposing a GOP Governor from Nevada. Stocking up on popcorn now.
President Reagan appointed Justice Anthony Kennedy in February 1988 his last full year in office. . Reagan served until January 1989.
Republicans need another argument and liberals should push back on their usual BS.
I love Harry Reid.
We talk much about PBO leaving…it is going to be something for Harry Reid to leave as well
I’ve heard rumors for quite a long time that Sec of Labor Tom Perez is on PBO’s short list for the Supreme Court.
that would be awesome
This seems like good karma to wake up to – good to see the GOP showing the world how they are so unfit to run the country. No President has ever had to cope with a such a congress & no congress has ever been so against the American People.
When you’ve lost Frum….
… you are lost.
Does anyone known a Muslim attorney appropriate for SCOTUS we could suggest to POTUS, the more the deverse, the better!
Pass the popcorn. Fast.
By Zeus, where is the popcorn???
They haven’t even seen a nominee, Scalia isn’t buried but the wannabes are still trying to make PBO a one term President
I’m late, but so love this comment 99.
🙂 I’m so late too Lynn – but the media and the GOP seem to have missed the 2012 election – so on balance we’re ahead of them.
Boy, this is a lot of excitement over the death of ?? What’s his name again???
Body still cooling off. But no one can blames the Democrats to respond in reaction of the Rethugs.

Who’s going to do the eulogy, Clarence Thomas? I heard he hasn’t uttered one word these past 10 years.
Hopefully he’s forgotten how to speak.
A little humor!
Ha!
American politics is just so damn ugly, vicious, selfish, backwards and mostly useless: the legacy Nixon, Reagan, Bush (both of them) and their handlers and acolytes.
