I’m still trying to digest the big news of the day. Did you know that his body was removed from the ranch in a Funeral Home hearst instead of the morgue van?

  3. February 13, 2016 at 6:48 pm

I think we have an answer, PBO will nominate someone and soon. Harry Reid and Patrick Leahy are tweeting as much.

i saw cbs’s supreme court “reporter” jan crawford call in to announce this news, and she was pushing the line “president obama shouldn’t nominate anyone this year” in what seemed to be the same sentence as announcing the death itself. she was pushing the republican talking point in the same breath as telling the public that he died. incredible coordination and “getting out in front” of the story so the public will repeat the stupidity.

By the way, I read that Scalia was approved by US Senate just a few weeks before election day, so that’s all BS about waiting for the new president.

      Exactly!

      • February 13, 2016 at 10:30 pm

Exactly, Judith! Political expedience must not be allowed to trump the Constitutional responsibility of U.S. Senators. Obviously, every Senator is free to refuse to give consent to the President’s nominee to the Supreme Court. But no Senator, including the Senate majority leader, has a constitutional right to tell the President not to nominate a Supreme Court Justice to fill the vacancy created by death, resignation and impeachment.

Hay Progressives, I want you to think about this, what if the Democrats had control of the Senate? Sure would have been great if certain people came out to vote in 2010 and 2014. Instead of sitting home cause they were mad, cause they didn’t get what they wanted when they wanted.

Yep, annieb, makes all the difference in the world.

Lots of nominees during election year, but not since the 1800s has one been confirmed with divided government (see upthread response to edwina3). 😦

What Constitutional provision did Mitch McConnell base his assertion? Isn’t it the responsibility of the media to raise this question with the Senate majority leader?

      February 13, 2016 at 9:09 pm

So he’s also having a big whinge about the President not racing from the golf course. This ISN’T 9/11 – so an old f.a.r.t. died – given his size, weight, age – not surprising. probably not unexpected – the media just has to make this about the President.

There is no 4th estate & until today there was no independent SCOTUS. The GOP and the media sure don’t like that PBO is sorting out both.

How dare the media make like its something novel that PBO would follow the law and nominate a new justice. The US media is way worse than the GOP in their treatment of this President. If it was a GOP President they would be discussing WHO would be appointed.

    • February 13, 2016 at 10:47 pm

disappointed seeing even liberals on twitter pushing the “he had a brilliant mind but…” nonsense. scalia was a complete moron in his arguments most of the time, and anytime he was ever challenged his feeble mind was exposed and would just bully back with anger and insults.

HEADLINE: Who Is Sri Srinivasan? Antonin Scalia’s Possible Replacement Is A Renowned Judge

// USA Today, The Atlantic, ThinkProgress, The New Yorker, and many more have reported that Srinivasan is among the names being thrown around as a front-runner to take Scalia’s seat. It’s time to find out more about him.

Srinivasan was the first Asian American and Indian American to serve of the Court of Appeals in the D.C. circuit. President Obama nominated Srinivasan to sit on the Court of Appeals, which is the second most powerful court in the U.S. With a background as a litigator, there has been criticism that much of Srinivasan’s career was spent defending others’ views rather than his own, which could have been problematic as a government lawyer, according to Mother Jones. However, Srinivasan proved his qualifications as a lawyer when he argued for same-sex marriage in front of the Supreme Court in 2013. This was a big win for Srinivasan that showed others he could be fit to serve on the Court, and now people are looking to him as a possible replacement for Justice Scalia. //

Got no response on last thread, so trying again.

    From Wikipedia:

Brian “Sandoval is a former judge of the United States District Court for the District of Nevada. On June 9, 2010, Sandoval defeated his GOP challengers (including incumbent governor Jim Gibbons) to win the Republican nomination for the 2010 gubernatorial election.

Prior to his service as a federal judge, he served as the Attorney General of Nevada, the youngest chairman of the Gaming Commission of Nevada and a state legislator. Sandoval was also the first Hispanic candidate elected to statewide office in Nevada.[2]”

    • February 13, 2016 at 8:01 pm

interesting for the political strategy with the election looming, but he is a republican even in today’s standards of republican, so i can’t get excited by that. i honestly question the mental capability of anyone who continues being a republican after the last 10-20 years of craziness.

        February 13, 2016 at 8:26 pm

        We’ll see.

I know nothing about Sandoval except that he’s Latino and pro-choice.

PBO knows that someone Dems would rejoice for has zero chance of being approved in Senate before election.

IMHO, his only choice is a moderate who may be approved, but has the possibility of bringing down Cruz and Rubio.

NV GOP caucus is a week from Tuesday, Feb 23.

          February 13, 2016 at 9:29 pm

GOP will not approve, no matter what. We really don’t need a return to the “PBO is so naive to try to appease the GOP” meme. PBO will nominate someone whose judgment and scholarship will do his legacy proud. This is not the beginning of his term. No fucks to give at this point.

Nice to see the “experts” are saying what I said on the previous thread: Scalia’s death will make a difference on the Court, even before a new justice is confirmed. AND, I do not believe he was a ‘giant” intellect. Some of his opinions were almost as word-salady as Ms. Palin.

I have to admit this: several weeks ago while I was in the pre-sleep stage, I asked myself, “What is one of the best things that could happen for our country?” My answer was “the death of Scalia.” Yes, I actually went there. So…….I will weep no tears…..nor express any fake regret.

      • February 13, 2016 at 8:18 pm

i will follow your lead that it is okay to feel that way now, given the circumstances of how this man chose to spend his life on this mortal coil.
