Email from David Axelrod: Warm Memories of a Chilly Day [FEBRUARY 12, 2016 AT 3:43 PM ET BY MELANIE GARUNAY]
{David Axelrod sent the below message to the White House email list, reflecting on President Obama’s return visit to Springfield this week.}
The last time I stood in the plaza outside the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois, I lost the feeling in my toes.
I was huddled with 17,000 others in near zero temperatures to help Barack Obama launch an improbable challenge to the prevailing politics and policies of Washington.
Men, women, and children from around the country shivered together in the shadow of the hulking capitol where Abraham Lincoln once served. They had come, an aroused citizenry, to change the course of history, and the sheer joy and energy of that mission made the threat of frostbite a trivial concern.
I returned to Springfield on Wednesday, not in a rented campaign van, but on Air Force One, accompanying the President of the United States on the anniversary of his audacious announcement.
As we walked into the empty plaza, the scene came alive in my memory: A young man at the podium, his voice booming off the surrounding buildings. Thousands of supporters shaking handmade signs, roaring their approval.
“I’d crawl to Iowa to work for this guy,” one middle-aged man told us that day, a sentiment I heard from so many others. Frigid cold be damned! They came to make history and change the country’s course. And they would.
So much of what Obama promised nine years ago has come to pass. He has turned around an ailing economy, enacted health reform, promoted clean energy, wound down two wars, lifted up diplomacy, and so much more. But people of all political stripes also responded to his call for national unity, healing, and renewal.
And on that score, we as a country have more work to do.
Thank you for posting that, Donna. Anything one can say about this man and his remarkable trajectory to the presidency sound trite; it’s been said so often.Seeing him walk down that street, greet the crowds in the beginning of his campaign, is watching him walk into history. There are some people who seemed called forth to meet the needs of the moment. Abraham Lincoln was one. I believe Winston Churchill was another. President Barack Obama is certainly the man created for this moment in history.
can i say how much i have enjoyed being on this journey with the President. He has made me a better citizen…he has shown me that despite the obstacles in our path the progress can stilllllllll be made….
and can i say how much richer my life has become being here in the village known as TheObamaDiary….

About That Stump Speech, Bernie? Most Black Folks Havenβt Seen the Inside of a Jail
Blacks, Latinos and criminal justice donβt always go hand in hand. We have classes and jobs and bills, too.
BY: CHARLES D. ELLISON
Posted: Feb. 12 2016 3:00 AM
// ………………………………..
The problem is his presentation during those crucial primary-winning moments when we know everyone is watching. Thereβs an entire half-speech in which heβll discuss inequality, the 1 percenters and mounting student loan debt. But itβs not until he mentions jails that we finally get his nod of electoral endearment.
So, hereβs a little text lifted from Sandersβ roaring speech before a stoked (mostly white) crowd after his handy dispatch of Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire: βAnd when we talk about transforming America, it means ending the disgrace of this country having more people in jail than any other country in the world, disproportionately African American and Latino. Not only are we going to fight to end institutional racism, and a broken criminal-justice system, we are going to provide jobs and education for our young people, not jails and incarceration.β
And he did it a week prior, seemingly unfazed by the lead Clinton may have scraped in Iowa; same speech: βWe will end the disgrace of having more people in jail than any other country. Disproportionately African American and Latino. What we are going to do is provide jobs and education for our kids not more jails and incarceration.β
……………………. snip ……………………………………..
But despite routine odds and racismβs hurdles, black success is often the rule rather than the exception. Itβs not confined to βfirstsβ or those rare moments when Hollywood is willing to release a black-history biopic. American Council on Education analyst Bryan Cook slaps back at the prison-life notion, quickly correcting the record to show the reverse and an 86 percent increase in black male college attendance since 2000. Howard Universityβs Ivory Toldson shut it all down with his discourse-shaking 2013 piece in The Root. Before Cook and Toldson, there was documentary filmmaker Janks Morton on the subject in his 2012 flick, Hoodwinked: We Can No Longer Doubt Our Greatness.
So letβs do the math rather than feed the image of an entire population stuck in cell blocks. According to the 2014 census, there are a total of nearly 46 million black people in the United States. Nearly 22 million are black men, and 24 million are black women. Overall, 6 percent of working-age black men ages 18-64 are in state, local or federal jail, which translates into 1.3 million out of the 22 million. A total of 368,000 black women are in prison, making up 23 percent (still too many) of the 1.6 million women incarcerated.
Thatβs about 1.7 million black people out of 46 millionβor just under 4 percent of the black population thatβs seen the inside of a jail.
The U.S. government will announce Tuesday that it has signed an agreement with Cuba to restore commercial air travel between the two countries, according to a notice sent to Capitol Hill offices.
βThis arrangement establishes scheduled air service of up to 30 daily direct flights between the U.S. and Cuba, will facilitate authorized travel, enhanced traveler choices, and strengthen people-to-people links between the two countries,β according to the notice sent by the Department of Transportation to congressional offices.
The Department later clarified that the agreement allows for up to 110 daily flights total β not 30 β between the U.S. and Cuba: 20 between the U.S. and Havana, and 10 flights to nine other Cuban airports, according to media reports.
Airlines will apply to fly between the two countries, and DOT will select which airline will operate the service, according to the notice.
Poor soul; she’s probably frazzled from keeping both arms extended – one to the right and the other to the left. As in “You go there! You! Over here! Sure hope she’ll be able to get some restful sleep at some point.
Over the years, I have also tried to focus on the stories that don’t make the headlines because they happened mostly via work in existing federal departments – like the rebuilding of the Civil Rights Division at DOJ, the administrations’ work on behalf of Native Americans and efforts to end the school-to-prison pipeline.
Today President Obama will make an announcement that demonstrates a legacy in another area that has gone almost completely unnoticed. I chose the picture above to represent this one in part because the tortoise is one of the species who will benefit and in part because I have always associated the approach of President Obama on these kinds of things with the fable about “The Tortoise and the Hare.” In other words, it’s all about the fact that “slow and steady wins the race.” Here is today’s announcement:
With this announcement, President Obama has now protected more than 260 million acres of land and water, more than any other administration. And he's probably not done yet. The White House has identified two priorities this year:
…areas that help foster resilience to climate change or are βconnected to people and communities that have not been historically representedβ in national parks and other federal sites.
“I have also tried to focus on the stories that donβt make the headlines”
I like how Smartypants always keeps her eyes, and ‘pen’, on the less acclaimed stuff PBO and his Admin do. She used to be an excellent source for what AG Holder was doing during his tenure!
With this announcement, Pres. Obama has now protected more acres of land and water than any other administration. https://t.co/JG5tG7QJ4e
You do realize there’ll only be two 4-legged creatures, right? For CC she can have two on the couch with the dogs and the other two can share the single-seater. CC will sit by the drinks. #easy-peasy
I have not read or caught up with today’s thread, but wanted to add a thought. If I am repeating a topic or already expressed opinion I apologize. Rachel mentioned that Bernie is basing his theory on how he is going to achieve his revolution on the number of votes he will get and with those voters being activated to demand what Bernie is pushing. Rachel said the Dem numbers are not as high in IA or NH as they were in 2008.
I would like to add that PBO did activate OFA and when I was trying to call or email GOP legislators not in my state or district it was impossible since they only accepted input from their own constituents. The gerrymandered districts shield the legislators from public pressure and from popular opinion since they only hear from those that share their ideology.
Bernie things white guy much better than white woman or black guy. The white guy right to rule exists in both parties – and among independents of which Bernie is a long time member.
Yeah, Bernie thinks he’s a rock star. I got news for him. The socialist revolution isn’t coming. PBO promised change, he didn’t promise a revolution of free stuff, he didn’t promise socialist utopia. Bernie’s numbers so far aren’t that grand, and even if they were, he would need that “establishment” he hates so much to pass his socialist agenda. Right now it’s a GOP “establishment” mostly in Congress. With large majorities of Dems even PBO couldn’t get a public option passed. Barely got the ACA in its present form passed. It takes hard work, winning Congressional elections, and lots of give and take. Bernie doesn’t have any of the skills or temperament for gradual change and compromise. And fortunately he won’t have the votes to even get the nomination.
GOOD MORNING TOD FAMILY…SUCH AN EXCITING DAY FOR ME….LEAVING IN AN HOUR TO SEE THE NEW APT. LESS SPACE FOR ME TO HAVE TO MANAGE…AND I DESPERATELY NEED THAT!….HOPE PBO HAS SUNSHINE AND SOME GOOD TIMES ON THE GOLF COURSE 2DAY..BACK LATER…………..BLESSINGS EVERYBODY!…<3,,AM IN A SILLY MOOD TODAY..SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS MOVE AND MY NEIGHBORS ARE AFRICAN AMERICAN!..YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

Isn’t it time yellow and pink roses get their time in the spotlight? This monopoly by red roses has gone on long enough, I say!
Well since it’s valentine’s weekend red would have to get the spotlight.(Love)
Pink signifies gratitude
Yellow symbolizes friendship.
And it’s harder to rhyme with those colors so there’s that π

Completely O/T, but how in the world can police/sheriff pensions be so high?
Makes me wonder about other disgraced/convicted police/sheriff officers:
UNFORTUNATELY SHERIFFS ARE HIGHLY OVERPAID …MANY SITTING ON THEIR PAUNCHY EGOS WHILE THE HARD WORKING,LOWER PAID BOYS ARE DOING ALL THE HARD WORK. THE LAW ENFORCEMENT PAY STRUCTURE AS A WHOLE NEEDS TO BE RESTRUCTURED AND I’M NOT GOING TO REPEAT THE ACTIONS OF HIGHER UPS AT OFFICER PARTIES WHO SPEND THEIR TIME SHOVING BEER CANS DOWN GARBAGE DISPOSALS AND DISRUPTING NEIGHBORS..OOPS..DID I SAY THAT?

Arapaho, and they’re asking that he only get 6 months jail time. WTH?!!!
$328K a YEAR?????
Exactly my thought.
Have no idea how pensions are calculated for the brass, but so many private sector companies have replaced pensions with 401K matching contribution programs.
Hope this sparks investigative journalism to shine a light on what’s actually going on in US police forces, which pretty much are allowed to murder people (including unarmed children), then lie and cover up — think Ferguson police chief — the frigging media took his statements as gospel, when he lied about Michael Brown — all without accountability.
Police departments need to be accountable to independent, objective investigators and need to be trained to be less trigger happy. End of rant.
I was just shocked because I never thought law enforcement people were that well compensated.

They are to busy talking about Hillary’s emails, speaking fees and other crap.
Here’s why!

President Obama’s Expanding Legacy
// ………………………..
I chose the picture above to represent this one in part because the tortoise is one of the species who will benefit and in part because I have always associated the approach of President Obama on these kinds of things with the fable about “The Tortoise and the Hare.” In other words, it’s all about the fact that “slow and steady wins the race.” Here is today’s announcement:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>..snip <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Just about the same with my row cats!
Two!
bt in near future
You do realize there’ll only be two 4-legged creatures, right? For CC she can have two on the couch with the dogs and the other two can share the single-seater. CC will sit by the drinks. #easy-peasy
thereβll only be two 4-legged creatures, right? wanna bet?
CC will sit by the drinks. what else is new?
π Technically, *I didn’t say it*.

The gerrymandered districts shield the legislators from public pressure and from popular opinion since they only hear from those that share their ideology.
bernie is drunk on white college kids’ high. (pun intended). reality will come crashing through soon.
I have watch POTUS and FLOTUS Valentine’s video alot, I mean alot. π
???
