I am so glad she said that, because if you listen to some folks black people haven’t done a darn thing but hold their hands out for free stuff.

The media keeps running in loops these cherry picked interviews of voters saying they voted for sanders.
See? The media and GOP may have already gone to far with the building up of sanders and tearing down of Hillary.
When sanders becomes more of a threat, you’ll see the media change in a split second to Hillary side.

I’m keeping it real and sane with looping the dance video from the White House and Beyonce’s (she who owned the Super Bowl) Formation performance and video. Beautiful, young and talented A-A dancers and the wonderful MO who gave them and their mentors the opportunity of a lifetime, and Queen B living large, in total control of herself and her career. The best line from the song that prophesied all of the media attention that followed is: “You know you that bitch when you cause all this conversation.”

When Addiction Has a White Face
    By EKOW N. YANKAH
    FEB. 9, 2016

WHEN crack hit America in the mid-1980s, for African-Americans, to borrow from Ta-Nehisi Coates, civilization fell. Crack embodied instant and fatal addiction; we saw endless images of thin, ravaged bodies, always black, as though from a famined land. And always those desperate, cracked lips. Our hearts broke learning the words “crack baby.”

    …………………………………….

Thirty years later, America is again seeing an epidemic of drug addiction, particularly heroin. The surge is so great that for the first time in generations, mortality among young white adults has risen. But the national attitude toward drug addiction is utterly different. Even Republican presidential candidates are eschewing the perennial tough-on-drugs speeches and opening up about struggles within their own families.

More important, police chiefs in the cities most affected by heroin are responding not by invoking military metaphors, weapons and tactics but by ensuring that police officers save lives and get people into rehab. As one former narcotics officer described his change of heart on addiction, “These are people and they have a purpose in life and we can’t as law enforcement look at them any other way.” In his inability to name the change that allowed this epiphany, his words also capture our cringe-worthy self-denial. Suddenly, police officers understand crime as a sign of underlying addiction requiring coordinated assistance, rather than a scourge to be eradicated.

It is hard to describe the bittersweet sting that many African-Americans feel witnessing this national embrace of addicts. It is heartening to see the eclipse of the generations-long failed war on drugs. But black Americans are also knowingly weary and embittered by the absence of such enlightened thinking when those in our own families were similarly wounded. When the face of addiction had dark skin, this nation’s police did not see sons and daughters, sister and brothers. They saw “brothas,” young thugs to be locked up, rather than “people with a purpose in life.”

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Chris Matthews actually said something intelligent: He railed against Bernie’s “medicare for all” plan. Matthews reminded me that, if that is indeed the model, then it is doomed to fail. Medicare is based on people paying into the system for 5 decades, and then using 10, 15 years of health care. And as lifespans got longer, Medicare needed serious adjustment.

So Bernie is selling the idea that you can pay in a “modest” tax, get all the health care you want from Day One? How, exactly, does that work, Bernie?

I thought Matthews made an excellent point.

      February 9, 2016 at 3:03 pm

IMO if Bernie’s big sell is scrapping Obamacare first thing, he is no different than any GOPer. The only difference being he’s at least came out with what he’d replace it with (would never work, much less pass with the votes needed). GOP just wants to repeal period. Why is someone even allowed to run in the DEM primary with this view?

    • February 9, 2016 at 4:27 pm

It is an excellent point. If we ever get to anything like a public option, it will built on to Obamacare, no giant and unaffordable revamping of the system. It’s much more likely to be a further medicaid expansion.

Totally agree. My vote will be based on whom I think will preserve PBO’s achievements. I feel ownership in PPACA due to the hours spent doing emails, letters, phone calls to my legislators daily both in their DC and Oregon offices, reading the bill, informing myself in order to convince others to join in support, making suggestions, donating money, relating my own healthcare story and signing petitions. When ACA passed and was upheld by the Supreme Court I felt almost as elated as I did when PBO was elected. That is why I most likely will vote for Hillary even though I do not feel the excitement I did when I supported PBO.

Black Girls in Durham, NC, School Denied Right to Honor African Heritage
What began as a celebration of Black History Month in Durham by wearing African head wraps, is now a protest over expression.

    BY: JANELLE HARRIS
    Posted: Feb. 9 2016 9:23 AM

It started as a collective expression of pride. A group of young women at the School for Creative Studies in Durham, N.C., decided to wear head wraps—also called geles—to align with and honor their culture at the start of Black History Month.

Instead, they say administrators warned that they were in violation of the dress code and threatened them with suspension. They were given the choice to wear the geles only in a way that allowed their hair to show or to remove them altogether. According to the policy, “hats, caps, hoods, sweat bands and bandannas or other head wear worn inside [the] school building” are impermissible, but it details nothing about garments worn in accordance with cultural tradition.

      February 9, 2016 at 3:49 pm

Never understood why so many people are threatened by Blackness. Well, actually I do, but I will write a rant on this later. There are still professional Black women who will not wear their hair in a natural style because they fear that they will not be seen as intelligent and gifted; that they are somehow “ghetto” for showing who they really are. I am not one for any type of Black purity test; people should do whatever they wish to do in regard to how they present themselves and it is their hearts, intention and character that matter. This school is looking for an excuse (their stance is especially egregious because this is a school for Creative Studies) to oppress these girls because they are uncomfortable with unabashed Blackness. How do they react to students who wear the hijab?

Newton, who caught a lot of flak for abruptly exiting his interviews after overhearing the opponent sitting next to him, stated on Tuesday that he’s human.

“I’m human. I never once said I was perfect. I never proclaimed that I was perfect,” Newton stated. “At the end of the day, people pick and they do things of that sort, and the truth of the matter is, who are you to say that your way is right? That’s what I don’t understand. We got all of these people … condemning, saying [I] should have done this, that and the third. But what makes your way right? I’ve been on record to say that I’m a sore loser. Who likes to lose? You show me a good loser, and I’ll show you a loser. … It’s not a popularity contest; I’m here to win football games.”

“At the end of the day, when you invest so much time and sacrifice so much and things don’t go as planned, the emotions take over. That’s what happens.”

Yes, I totally agree. Cam is a millennial who has a big heart and a wonderful mother to guide him. He is confident young man who I am proud to see on the football field being his own man. Some people are so used to a certain type of AA athlete who is quiet yet sure of themselves or they are like a Mohammad Ali who tells the truth and don’t care what you think. These same people LOVE Mohammad Ali NOW but not back then in his prime and wanted him taken down a notch which they could not do. Another great QB that wiped the floor with John Elway another Denver player was Douglas Williams an AA QB for I think the Red Skins played a terrific super bowl game with 4 TD’s and almost 5 which is a record. I don’t think he was mentioned much this past Sunday or any past super bowls. After that super bowl he quietly faded away not seeking the limelight.

At a Canadian pet motel and foster care center, a dog broke out of her kennel to comfort and cuddle with two new, frightened, foster puppies on their first night, ABC News reports.

Maggie, the maternal dog, actually had a litter of her own who were all adopted out of the humane society a little while before she found a loving home.

“We think that’s why she got so attached to the puppies,” Alex Aldred, who works at Barker’s Pet Motel and Grooming, where the heartwarming events unfolded, told ABC News. “We’ve never really seen it before, where a dog sneaks out to some puppies and is so excited to see them.”

Spending money to “save” [reduce aid for those in need] turns out to be a waste of money????

A year and a half after it started spending money and time to screen welfare applicants for drug use, Tennessee still hasn’t found many poor people who are “getting all potted up on weed“.

Out of 39,121 people who have applied for Families First in Tennessee benefits since the state instituted drug tests in mid-2014, just 65 have tested positive for narcotics…testing system has revealed that just 0.2 percent of welfare applicants can’t pass a drug test.

At a visit to the Puritan Backroom diner in New Hampshire yesterday, Marco Rubio (R) was confronted by a gay man about the issue of marriage equality. The answer not only revealed another robotic answer from the candidate, but how little he understands the issue and its importance in people’s lives.

Timothy Kierstead, who is 50, married, and a father of three, asked Rubio, “Why do you want to put me back in the closet?” He replied, “I don’t. You can live any way you want.”

Kierstead explained that Rubio’s opposition to marriage equality — to the existence of his family — amounted to him declaring “we don’t matter.” Rubio reiterated his belief that “marriage is between one man and one woman,” adding, “I think that’s what the law should be. And if you don’t agree you should have the law changed by a legislature.”…Explaining that he doesn’t believe “case law” equals “settled law,” he promised to appoint Supreme Court justices that will “interpret the Constitution as originally constructed,” to restore this power to the states.

Rubio’s interaction with Kierstead reveals how this is another of the candidate’s rehearsed speeches. Long before the Supreme Court got involved, the New Hampshire legislature did act to define marriage on its own.

    A must read by Spandan

“If Obama thinks we’re loyal to him,” I once said on a comment at the Daily Kos, “he should know we’re even more loyal to our principles”. I paraphrase, but that was the gist of one of my comments in 2009, on an article about the ever illusive public option during the health care reform debate. I was angry at the possibility of the public option being dropped from health care reform, and starting to buy into the Lefty blogosphere-propagated hysteria that Barack Obama was selling us out.

Then, a lightbulb went off in my head. A voice said, “Well, maybe you should read the actual legislation first, before you decide the President is selling out your values.” And so I became one of the roughly 13 people in America to actually “read the bill.”

When I read it, I saw that being loyal to my principles and being loyal to this president were not only compatible, but essentially synonymous.

Thank you for sharing this Donna Dem!!! And thank you, Spandan, for writing it (does he ever lurk here?)!!

I needed this today. I am passing this on to one of my cousins who feels the same way I do. I’m hesitating to send it to everyone, because my cousins who are “all in” for Bernie do happen to admire the President, but things are a little touchy with the Bernie fan base right now, and Spandan and the People’s View is full of fierce push-back against Sanders’ running against PBO campaign. Although I would love for them to read his wonderful essays, I don’t want to start any family email wars.

Jovie, I noticed this same phenomenon recently (I’m pretty sure I know what to call it too) with two former neighbors of mine. In ’08 they were all in for Hillary Clinton. They are two married gay women, white, about Boomer age, and I remember having lots of conversations assuring them of (then Senator) Obama’s support for the gay community. At the time, they also told me how important it was for them to see a woman elected president. They did absolutely support Barack Obama once he finally became the nominee, but HRC had definitely been their first choice.

So imagine my surprise when I spoke to one of them last week who told me that Bernie is their first choice for the Dem nomination. So “First Woman President” and all that isn’t important anymore? I was blown away by the fact that, now that HRC isn’t running against a black man, she is just “meh” and they are all in for her opponent.

      I’ve been SMDH all week.

Yep. I read in another article (not the one below) that there are so many of these voters that the Sanders campaign has developed a script just to woo Trump supporters and Bernie himself spoke about his appeal to Trump supporters on Face the Nation recently.

        https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2016/02/09/for-some-n-h-voters-yooge-choice-between-donald-trump-and-bernie-sanders/

        From the article.
“I think they’re both honest. I don’t think they’re putting on a face,” said Kandy Dennison, 37, an independent voter who attended a Trump rally Sunday in Plymouth, N.H. “And if I couldn’t have Trump, I’d like to have Bernie.

And in some cases, the most important similarity between Sanders and Trump has nothing to do with policy or decibels — it is who they’re running against.

More than anything, said Dennison, “I don’t want Hillary.”

“More than anything, said Dennison, “I don’t want Hillary.”

I find this to be one of the reasons that far too many people support Bernie.

You know Donna, I am baffled as to the amount of hate and vitriol there is toward HRC. It reminds me of the animosity aimed at PBO, in that it doesn’t seemed to be based on policy at all. In fact, although it is misogyny being directed at HRC, racism is still lurking there in that HRC has embraced and promised to build on the work of PBO, has addressed Flint, etc. I think that is one reason for this inexplicable convergence of Sanders and Trump supporters.

Believe me, I haven’t forgotten Bill and Hillary’s dog whistles from ’08, but Bill Clinton did campaign for PBO in ’12 and I believe Hillary learned from working for him and is better for it. She was not my first choice for the Dem nomination. I hoped for VP Biden and then, when our dear Joe announced he would not run, I hoped that Martin O’Malley might prove to be an alternative. But now that it is just Clinton and Sanders left standing, she seems to be the only one willing to recognize and show some respect to the Obama Coalition and also, to me, is the most qualified to protect President Obama’s legacy and achievements. On a personal note, as someone in business for myself, not rich and at the mercy of private insurance all of my adult life, the ACA has been a lifesaver. I don’t want to see it destroyed or degraded or left unprotected in search of Utopia.

Anyone who could even think of supporting Trump is not a Dem, I don’t care how they are registered.

So it seems to me that for many Sanders supporters, it’s more about what they are against (PBO and/or HRC) than what they are for.

i think this is a very profound observation. I believe I saw this but could not quite put it into words. Thank you for this. It is the difference by far. When a Trump supporter is a Dem and can’t vote for him at the primary and then decides to vote for Sanders is says something doesn’t it.

It is widely expected that Sanders is going to win. So far, the demographics in Iowa ad NH have been in his favor. I want to see if he will win by 20 or 30 points.

how does Bernie Sanders deal with this….what is his solution to the racist nature of those people…weren’t these the folks that Sanders wanted to court for himself…

I know, how do we explain that in 2008 after eight years of complaining of how the last eight years were so shameful that American elected an idiot who put us in two ongoing wars and almost destroyed the USA, to electing the first African American President who is a wonderful husband, father, son-in-law, humanitarian, smart, did almost all the things he said he would do yet now eight years later it appears we want to go back to the idiot who almost destroyed us due to RACISM and Corrupt Media.

I like you, Bernie, I really do. But this Snapchat is like the reading of the first chapter of an old book. “It was a dark and stormy night.”*

[Just went to look up the full quote. Could work for this evening in New Hampshire. “It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents — except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.” — from Paul Clifford by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 1830] (TMI?)

Ha. (*Sorry – may have more of these random one-liners while we wait for the verdict tonight. I don’t wait well.)

i am not a Bernie Sanders fan…the political folks of Sanders ilk..were always annoying…and full of Privilege…when i would see them at community meetings i always felt that they were for a special project..that we were their special project….that when the meeting was over they went back to their privileged life…

i so love Spandan’s piece of the purity of the political left…he summed it up so well….

Hillary Clinton will have to win…

Imagine this: the DEM nominee running against the policies of a sitting DEM POTUS..vowing to dismantle the progress of said POTUS

    Has any such thing happened??

And what would such a nominee who trashes the DEM party and its head (POTUS) do for the rest of the party..the downhill races….
