Alan Pyke: Why The Obama Administration Wants To Pay For Prisoners To Go To School
“My professor, Miss Jamie Mullaney, she cried the last day of class. And it made me cry,” Terrell Johnson said, sitting across from Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Attorney General Loretta Lynch at Maryland Correctional Institute-Jessup on Friday morning. “I’m in a place where it’s not good to cry,” said Johnson, who’s in the middle of a prison sentence for selling drugs. “But I didn’t care. I felt like this lady genuinely cares if I get this education. That made me wanna try even harder, because I don’t want to let her down.” Mullaney, the head of Goucher College’s sociology department, wasn’t there to hear Johnson recount how his coursework in the Goucher Prison Education Partnership (GPEP) has changed him.
The Goucher program these men participate in is funded entirely through money the school has raised itself. No state or federal education dollars provide GPEP books, teachers, tutors, and work materials. The program’s costs — about $5,000 per student per year, a sliver of what it costs to incarcerate an adult for 12 months at Jessup — have come entirely from private sources who believe in what professors like Mullaney and renowned historian Jean Harvey Baker and their 70 uniformed, caged students are doing here and at a neighboring women’s facility. But under the pilot program Lynch and Duncan unveiled Friday, partnerships like GPEP will be able to apply for Pell Grant funding. “The cost-benefit of this doesn’t take a math genius to figure out,” Duncan said. “We lock folks up here, $35,000, $40,000 every single year. A Pell Grant is less than $6,000 each year.”

Hello!
Hello, NCLB !!!!!
How are you Jackie O?
I wish I knew how to record for my archives the last SOTU. C-Span charges so much for a DVD!
Doing well, thanks. This SOTU is going to be great! I just hope there are no catcalls from the yucky side of the audience. We know President Obama can handle it, but it hurts the rest of us to the bone!
I still cringe when I think of Joe You Lie! Wilson. I just don’t know anymore with so many renegades and recidivists in Congress. I’d better prepare my heart.
I have a friend who plans to read the transcript, because of that heart thing!
Heads up!!
Good Afternoon, TODers!!!
Thanks so much for bringing that grand story here, NW!
You’re welcome, Ms. J’OB.
I agree JOb… You begin to wonder what the President could do if he had more time. Or yo begin to wonder how the next President will follow in his footsteps. Or will they even try.
In case anyone is interested….

Thanks Jeff 🙂

Good article.
Thanks, NCLB. Glad that Klein fingers the media for helping to created the bloated mess that is the Trump candidacy. If they didn’t report every idiotic thing this mess of a man said, he would deflate from lack of attention.
My thoughts exactly, Jackie.
The US bombed a location in Mosul where ISIL was storing millions of dollars in cash early this morning per CNN’s Barbara Starr
This is what GOP campaign ads will look like if Bernie is the nominee:
Congrats NCLB on your Gold ⭐
So Dr. Carson’s ‘Campaign’ keeps imploding?
Therefore, the question before us is What kind of conservative is Dr. Ben Carson?
Nena, another way of saying this is that all five staffers are dumber than doorknobs. First they work for a looney like Carson and then they hitch their wagon to a fraud like Cruz.
Wow…and this is Norman Ornstein
Norm Ornstein & Thomas Mann have been calling out DC/NY Journos and GOPers since 2012, at least.

Let’s just say it: The Republicans are the problem.

Rep. Allen West, a Florida Republican, was recently captured on video asserting that there are “78 to 81” Democrats in Congress who are members of the Communist Party. Of course, it’s not unusual for some renegade lawmaker from either side of the aisle to say something outrageous. What made West’s comment — right out of the McCarthyite playbook of the 1950s — so striking was the almost complete lack of condemnation from Republican congressional leaders or other major party figures, including the remaining presidential candidates.
It’s not that the GOP leadership agrees with West; it is that such extreme remarks and views are now taken for granted.
We have been studying Washington politics and Congress for more than 40 years, and never have we seen them this dysfunctional. In our past writings, we have criticized both parties when we believed it was warranted. Today, however, we have no choice but to acknowledge that the core of the problem lies with the Republican Party.
Fitting to post. AGAIN.
Sad but true. These stations have helped Trump to “self-finance” his campaign. If only he were charged every Trump rally that has been broadcast in part or in its entirety…maybe by now he might have decided that the cost of running is more than he is willing to pay. So far, he hasn’t had to pay in money or in consequences to his actions.
Norm Ornstein was one of the first analysts/fellows of the Amer. Enterprise Institute. Shows you how insane the GOP has become in the last two decades.
Oh, Bob, that will only make the smallest dent in this crisis and without some kind of milk products, it’s wholly inadequate for small children. No one should have to have their lives apportioned out like this. I wish the plight of the people of Madaya were headlined around the world so that everyone could see the extent of Assad’s barbarity. If the world can’t get food in, then let’s get get the people out. Assad has forfeited any right to be considered a human being. He’s a monster.
For anyone else trying to get in!
The US flew B-52 in South Korea this morning in support of South Korea… Bc… North Korea.
Only problem is, pretty sure any SAM they have can knock out that relic.
But it does carry two 20 megaton bombs if need be.
Good grief.
Anyways, happy Monday. Go patriots. 👌🤓🏈

In answer to prettyfoot on the previous thread:
Bernie Sanders supports the closing of Guantanamo. Always has.
The Senator was also part of the delegation to Cuba that met with Alan Gross and helped the Obama Administration mend its relations with Cuba and bring Mr. Gross home.
The WH is trying to get the number of detainees under 100… It’s at 103 currently…
Then, like magic, congress will approve rest of detainees to US soil???
Ya right… That is stupid. No way congress approves that.
So, in the end, unless we transfer all remaining 103 detainees out of US, it will remain.
Just saying.
They can keep the empty gitmo, jovie.
there were two votes..
a bill that Authorizes the Use of Funds for the Transfer or Release of Guantanamo Detainees to the United States-he voted no
a bill that prohibits the Use of Funds for the Transfer or Release of Guantanamo Detainees…he voted no
both votes were taken on 11/19/13

Thanks Prettyfoot.
I knew those votes to be true. I was too lazy to seek the info.
Sanders is like Kicinich(sp)……with on exception. Kicinich has always been a Dem.
WOW, the last person David Bowie followed on twitter was God:

I am no fan of Megyn Kelly. But have Donald Trump look in the mirror lately? He is a ugly man inside and outside and the only thing which has those three women marrying him is M-O-N-E-Y.
Kelly is making her own money.
She don’t need Trump to wooed her.
And he is so repulsive in every way, who on earth would want to be wooed by him. Unlike many men his age, he has completely let himself go and looks like a flabby doughnut of a man with the world’s worst comb over and dull as dishwater conversation. Who could stand someone who talked only about how great he was?
Agree 100% jackie.
Stuff like this makes me wonder if he’s just pushing the envelope to see how far over the ledge everyone – including his pet MSM – will follow him.
And they’re still following.
BOOOOOOOM
How can anyone seriously consider this to be a candidate for President of the United States??!!?
Great tweet.
Ha. Thanks!

This group is a fraud . They just line their own pockets with ” Administrative Fees “
I know why GOPers pretend and fund these Fake Groups. I just have never been able to understand the Motivations of Rich Dems funding such obvious Fakes. Dems are quick to please, compromise their principle for Go along, to Get along. They have since 1968 refused to truly get to know that GOP went into a metamorphosis change in 1964. Failure to call out Southern Dems in the 1960s catapulted GOPers to Southern Strategy Scheme.
Volumes, indeed. Hi Jackie. Do you or anyone here know if Matthew Dowd is a member of this group? I think I read somewhere before he was. If it is so, it would seem to reason why he sent out this tweet yesterday.
Hi! How are you?
To answer your question, I don’t personally know anything about Matthew Dowd. (I’m just getting back to the blog, so probably someone has answered this already!)
False! Here you are.
John McCain was 1st, then Sen McConnell and now, RNC Chairman? Hmm?
Oh, Rafael Eduardo, it looks as if you never learned that “you reap what you sow.”
Wow, this speaks volumes…I wonder how Ted is feeling about these stances…hmmmmm
The GOP establishment *really* dislikes him. They are in no rush to put this issue to bed…and if it works to the detriment of Cruz’s candidacy, all the better.
No one on either side cares for Ted Cruz, who can blame them. Cruz is a disgusting character just like Trump.
Thank yoooooooooOOOOOOOoooooooo Nerdy!!!
🙂
Thanks, President Obama!
The free market has spoken.
She fled with 18 yrs old Son with $30K to Mexico and has shown Zero concern for the law, but……lets reduce her bail bond money?
Justice in USA is Not equal, period.
Do this family own these Texas judges? How much money have they given to the judges in Texas?
Annieb – she and her son just needed one thing – to be a White person – and all benefits are afforded to them – over and over and over.
This pisses the phuck out of me!
You are so right GGail. If that was my 16 year old black son who had murder four people, his rich or poor self would be in prison.
EXACTLY!
CNN IS MAKING AN ISSUE OUT OF THIS…HOWEVER…THE PRESIDENT SHOULD MEET WITH KING ABDULLAH OF JORDAN THIS WEEK…IT LOOKS BAD IF HE DOES NOT.
One thing I’ve found shocking (but good) is the high dollar amounts I’ve seen for campaign fundraising by Clinton and Sanders and the high number of new Dem Iowa caucus goers. Even though I’m not engaged in this yet (but will vote for whoever the Dem nominee is) it seems that there is a good bit of excitement in the Dem community for this election.
As prettyfoot pointed out Bernie did vote against the funding to close Guantanamo.
it is also true that Bernie and Sen. Leahy led the battle in the Senate in 2012 to close Guantanamo. But then voted “Nay.” Hard to understand.
It is one more thing to not like about Bernie, that is for sure.
I wish i could like any of the (D) candidates. i don’t, but i will vote for one of them over any (R) any day for any position whatsoever.
Registration in Iowa is possible until 10 days before the Primary on Feb. 1.
The candidates must be all over the college campuses looking to register new voters.
I believe so too! 🙂
