I saw Natalie in concert and was blown away by her back up singers. They had powerful voices and Natalie let them soar! And she soared right along with them. So generous, so gracious…many stars are not. I gained even more respect for her talent after that.
      May she Rest In Peace.

      • January 1, 2016 at 2:05 pm

I was Blessed to see Natalie perform on several ocassions; the most memorable was the 2001 Newport Jazz Festival. The weekend was sort of ho-hum; too many of the performers were just “phoning it in;” I was feeling I could have stayed home, listened to cd’s and had a V-8! THEN — Natalie hit the stage! Girlfriend SET IT ON FIRE! Ray Charles closed the festival following her set — not only did he keep the fire burning, when she came out to join him on one number, they were having such a good time that she stayed for 3 or 4 more! Natalie and Ray SAVED the 2001 Newport Jazz Festival!

Good and prosperous 2016 to you and your family, JackieG.

Heard a report on Stan Pate from Alabama on the radio at 2pm PST (5pm EST).

@cbsradionews said that he’s paying for similar protests at the Sugar, Orange and Cotton bowls and hasn’t decided who he is supporting for President in 2016, but is favoring Marco (ugh) Rubio. 😦

“The messages’ tagline was “anybodybuttrump.us,” a barebones website belonging to a Tuscaloosa, Alabama-based group called the “We the People Foundation.” The site is registered to Pate, who The Huntsville Times once referred to in a profile as “an edgy force in Alabama politics.”

“This is not over,” Pate told CBS News. “This is just beginning.”

Pate said that he has bought similar, smaller banner ads at the Orange Bowl, the Cotton Bowl and the Sugar Bowl. AirSign, the Florida-based airborne ad firm contracted to fly the anti-Trump messages, confirmed the buys.”

Donald Trump, now known as #ButtRump.

So yes, there is power in symbolism. But to assume that marginalized voters can be reduced to one demographic factor is why the word “token” was introduced into discussions about diversity. It is demeaning to think that’s all that matters.

  23. January 1, 2016 at 2:41 pm

This will send a powerful message if they can hold his feet to the fire….the DEMs have already refused to sanction his re-election….as Maddow says…”Watch this Space”

Good afternoon, TOD! H.A.P.P.Y.N.E.W.Y.E.A.R! Been so on the go since Christmas Eve that I only had a chance to glance at the front page once or twice. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year! Mine was fantastic; busy, but fantastic! God-daughter came from Texas; grandson and former D-i-L#1 were hear from RI. Only thing missing was grand-daughter and former D-i-L#2. All of my house guests left on Wednesday, I’ve been in clean-up/inventory mode since. As I ended up in the hospital after last year’s party, the gear was put away by others and NOT inventoried, hence, it made setting up for this year a little challenging… Don’t intend to ever have that problem again. Am labeling all sides of the boxes with titles and pictures.

Break’s over; will be back to read you later (I hope!)

Mr 99 is impressed with your labelling and inventory. He photographed inside the boxes when we moved. I wrote on the outside “kitchen/living/bedroom stuff” – and simply wrote “santa” on the Christmas boxes – I was not his favorite person.

      Happy New Year jazziz

pointing to examples of mummers groups wearing black face in the past – and, in this year’s parade, one group in a Mexican theme that wore “brown face” – Mines said that the city allowing the parade to continue was a “slap in the face” to minority communities throughout Philadelphia

This parade had been touted for many years as the racist institution that it is…the parade members have been know to parade in blk fce and today one group had a Mexican theme and appeared in brown face….

BLM shadowed the parade in protest….
as i read the article i cannot remember a time that there was a physical protest against the parade…yes there was statements of outrage about the Mummers Parade…but i do not ever remember any physical protest at the parade….

my grandmother hated the mummers parade for all the aforementioned reasons and we were never allowed to watch it on TV….

    more on the mummers

At 9 a.m. Friday, before a thin crowd of revelers, the brand-new Philadelphia Division kicked off the strut down – not up – Broad Street.

The division, which includes two new Hispanic performance groups and a new African American drill team, brought some diversity to what has long been a white Philly tradition. They joined the LGBT Miss Fancy Brigade, which marched for the fourth year.

Correction…there was a demonstration that took place in 1964…led by the NAACP….

Being largely based in silliness and stemming from so far back in American history, many of the amateur actors, made up of average citizens, typically wore blackface. The practice was allegedly curbed in 1964 after protesters led by the NAACP pressured the city into giving up the formal inclusion of blackface in the parade, but the practice, while not officially sanctioned, still occurs year after year, even as recently as 2015. This year, one should not expect any different. The tradition of blackface goes back so far that even founding father and first president of the United States, George Washington, participated.

Seems Sen. Murphy was correct. Sadly.

    http://crooksandliars.com/2016/01/2016s-first-child-shooting-happened-just

    The Sun Sentinel reports:

Officers responded to a church in the 800 block of South Kirkman Road after receiving reports of a shooting victim.

The girl, who police have not identified, had just left church when she was hit in the right arm by the bullet, police said.

She was treated at the scene by the Orlando Fire Department. No bullet was recovered at the scene, police said.

Officers have no suspect information because the round “seemed to be from the voluminous amounts of gunfire” happening at the time.

The unidentified 9-year-old will remember the first day of 2016 as the day an irresponsible gun owner shot her.

On Dec. 30th, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said celebratory gunfire is illegal and dangerous.

“There are many ways to enjoy the New Year, but firing random shots in the air should not be among them,” Demings said in a statement.

Charges for firing a firearm in public or on a residential property range from a first-degree misdemeanor to third-degree felony, Demings said.

    “Voluminous” amounts of gunfire?? Really?????

    Ummmm…. http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheats/2016/01/01/trump-stars-in-jihadist-recruitment-vid.html

Donald Trump’s rhetoric about Muslims and Syrian refugees is at the center of a new terrorist recruitment video put out by the Somalian jihadist group al Shabaab. Trump’s guest appearance is preceded by an old clip of U.S.-born al Qaeda cleric Anwar al Awlaki warning that the West will “become the land of “religious discrimination and concentration camps.” It then cuts to Trump reading his promise to stop Muslim immigration aloud at a campaign rally. “And so remember this, so listen: Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what the [expletive] is going on,” Trump says to a cheering grown. The video cuts again to Awlaki, who was killed by a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in 2011. “The West will eventually turn against its Muslim citizens,” he warns.

Wonder if he’ll apologize to Hillary now?
