And a happy summer solstice from down under – and for the first time since we moved – we saw some stars – must be getting used to all the city lights which were hiding the stars.

      • December 21, 2015 at 8:01 am

And it is – a very mild summer – touch wood – and starry evenings – we just have no idea climate wise any more – down south is burning up – in the north – looking to have a mild Christmas day – must be the grandbabe doing her thing 🙂

You, too, Chips. I’m finally down to the last pre-Christmas chores–grocery shopping, cleaning (ugh) and then cooking. Would be great to have a cheery maid appear at my door to do all the household cleaning drudgery. I wonder if that’s available on Amazon?

        • December 21, 2015 at 8:06 am

When I rule the world, Jackie, everyone will have a maid.

Now that I support 100 percent, although I pity the poor souls who end up as maids. Maybe they can get paid CEO salaries under your benevolent rule.

            • December 21, 2015 at 8:15 am

I haven’t finalized how I’ll do it yet, but I’m thinking maybe that every woman who votes for the GOP or supports Chelsea will be a maid in my kingdom – and they won’t get paid nuttin’.

Oooh, now you’re getting tough, but, I don’t see any reason why men couldn’t be trained to clean, like Jeeves did for Bertie Wooster. It’s long past time for men to take on the household drudgery and what could be more fitting for Republican men who like to control women’s reproductive choices than to scrub floors and clean bathrooms. .

Kenyan Muslims shield Christians in Mandera bus attack

A group of Kenyan Muslims travelling on a bus ambushed by Islamist gunmen protected Christian passengers by refusing to be split into groups, according to eyewitnesses.

They told the militants “to kill them together or leave them alone”, a local governor told Kenyan media.

At least two people were killed in the attack, near the north-eastern village of El Wak on the Somali border.

The Somali based al-Shabab group is the main suspect for the attack.

It has not said if it was responsible, but often carries out attacks in Kenya’s north-east.

  16. December 21, 2015 at 9:13 am

Good morning, TOD! Busy day today — God-daughter arrives at 12:55 am and I’m nowhere near ready. While most of house is still topsy-turvy, I feel Blessed. On Saturday and Sunday, the painter finished my dining room, then he and his brother delivered my old DR furniture to Goodwill, picked up and placed my “new” DR furniture, helped shelve all of the china & crystal, washed the DR windows, then boxed all the books I had lining the foyer and upstairs hallway — 25 12×12 cartons! These two young men, ages 22 and 16, WORKED! Never a complaint, always polite and courteous. The “new” DR furniture was purchased from the estate of one of my friends; the anchor blocks on one end of the table need to be rebuilt. When I mentioned calling on a retired master carpenter for the job, the 16 yr old asked if I would give him the opportunity to attempt the repair; he can construct the necessary blocks in his Vo-tech class. I LOVED that he took the initiative and spoke up, rarely see that in young folks… My electrician is raising his boys to be fine, upstanding young men.

BTW, my electrician is facing a serious health crisis. I ask you to include him in your prayers.

Now, I’m off to the witch doctor, then back here for a marathon cleaning session. Have a wonderful day!

The NPR interview above is well worth your time. I watched it in 12 minute chunks, so I could multi-task. I think PBO handled the idiotic question of why some people dislike him with grace and intelligence (as always). He pointed out that historically all presidents have been criticized; also said that he himself represents the change that some people feel uncomfortable with and that sometimes people react to his ‘demographics.’ Our President is never caught off guard by any question, gives complete intelligent, no-blustery answers and even graciously acknowledges his critics when it’s called for.

    BECAUSE….

    that is who they are.

Republicans grope for way to kill Paris climate agreement

Republicans are running out of ways to undermine the Obama administration’s commitments as part of the Paris climate agreement.

GOP lawmakers acknowledge that they won’t get a vote on the international accord, which they vehemently oppose. But Republicans and their allies are still pursuing channels in each branch of government, as they look to torpedo the agreement.

Many hoped that the Green Climate Fund was their best chance to do just that.

As negotiators were hashing out a final climate deal, Republicans vowed to block American contribution to the fund, an international pool of public and private money directed to help poorer nations prepare for climate change.

But the omnibus spending deal passed this week allows Obama to find GCF funding elsewhere in the federal budget, effectively taking the matter out of Congress’ hands.

“The prohibition about doing it was very outspoken,” Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a vocal Obama critic, told The Hill. “You heard me say that: ‘No you can’t do it.’ But then they say, ‘Well, we can do it within accounts.’ So, that’s where it is.”

Even so, critics of the deal say there are ways to eventually disrupt his climate promises.

2017 appropriations: While the White House, Democrats and greens expect Obama to be able to meet at least part of his current commitment to the Green Climate Fund, Republicans said they could challenge that in the 2017 appropriations process.

If we needed any more incentive to vote DEM for president and all down ticket races, this is it. We have to flip four Senate seats and 30 House seats. It’s that or our children and grandchildren choke on polluted air or die from chemical laden water.

      • December 21, 2015 at 11:37 am

GM Jackie…our electorate does not pay that close attention to what is happening in Congress…as an activist…Pre-Obama ..i did not pay that much attention to what was going on in the halls of Congress…i suspect that i was not alone…the DNC …we expect so much from them…but they just do not seem up for the job of mobilizing the Dem and Dem leaning voters…maybe they believe that they do not need a huge turn out…the President was able to beat voter suppression…big money etc…he has a formula….the president registered huge amount of new voters…perhaps the DEM candidates are doing the same…i am not involved on that level…sigh…perhaps i should be…

One more entry today in Good News is that NY Governor Andrew Cuomo is working on a plan that will eventually pardon 95,000 youthful offenders.
The offenders crimes had to have been non-violent and ten years of good behavior have to be completed and then an official Pardon from the Governor can be issued.

Of course it does. To put what POTUS said another way, Trump has tapped into the angry, racist white male demographic. He’s saying what they think.

And the polls, such that they are, are hardening around him.

He’s dragging the angry white racist core of the GOP into the light.

It’s not about Trump; it’s about who SUPPORTS Trump. See them for what they are based on the fact they like what Trump is saying.

Good News (sort of:) Monday…Barbie Doll, Mika is mad as hell and she’s not gonna take it anymore! About flipping time.

    http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2015/12/21/3734185/msnbc-hosts-expose-santorums-hypocrisy-on-muslims-what-are-you-doing-about-white-men-with-guns/

This morning on MSNBC, Joe Scarborough asked Rick Santorum a simple question: What can we do to show the millions of peaceful Muslim Americans that they are valued and respected members of society?
Santorum rejected the question and said that onus was on every Muslim American to confront “the cancer within Islam.” Santorum said that “most Muslims” in America were shirking their duties to confront radicalism.
Co-host Mika Brezinsky had enough. “I’ll turn the argument around on you. Why aren’t you working on white men with guns?,” she asked.
“You are telling Muslim Americans they all need to come out and talk about the tiny percentage of their community that has kind of, quite frankly, wreaked havoc. But yet, you look at the data of white men wreaking havoc on this country? Why aren’t white men coming forward? Why don’t you call on them to do that?,” Brezinsky continued.

She didn’t come close to going far enough, imo, but it’s a start.

  33. December 21, 2015 at 9:51 am

From Steve Benen over at Maddow Blog, with his observations about the latest GOP Polling:

Based on the latest, overall national averages, Trump isn’t just the leading Republican candidate, he’s actually dominating by more than 20 points. These same overall averages show the frontrunner, at least for now, with more support than Cruz and Rubio combined.

When was the last time a Republican presidential candidate led by more than 20 points in late December and failed to win his party’s nomination? Never. It just hasn’t happened.

Now, some caveats are probably in order. When I say “never,” I’m referring to the modern era: election cycles in which polling existed and in which Republican primary and caucus voters chose the GOP nominee in contested races.

In other words, we’re basically looking at 40 years’ worth of presidential elections (for Democrats, it’s 44 years, but since Nixon ran effectively unopposed in 1972, it’s 40 for the GOP). In that time, no Republican had a national lead this big and ended up losing.

    • 99 Sandy1110
      December 21, 2015 at 10:00 am

Translation: Koch bros are going to have to work hard to cook the polls and spin one of the others as the anointed candidate if they don’t want Trump to represent the GOP.

It might be too late to put that genie back in the bottle.

Not only is the FBI investigation Susana Martinez’s campaign, her Secretary of State just began a jail sentence for theft of campaign funds. Now the governor is under fire for drunk dialing the police and trying to bully them and a desk clerk because of numerous complaints about a loud party in her room.
