Congratulations, Bill R! How soggy are you in Salem? I know we need a great snowpack in the Cascades, but the deluge of rain is too much of a good thing.
My sister lives in B.C. and is a Canadian citizen. It is a small timber town on Vancouver, Island. I’m amazed at the diversity there when I visit,a large Sikh community and temple, Latino and Asian community. She runs a Tibetan Buddhist center our of her property, with a resident Tibetan refugee priest. He daughter is half Tibetan and is married to a Tibetan refugee who is the local coordinator for an intercultural relations consortium. Refugees are welcome there and there is amazing harmony between the immigrant and longer term residents. It is amazing that Canada has such a different, less hateful, divisive culture than ours. That is true at least from what I have seen.
Judith, I’m guessing the government here thinks of screening less in terms of time and more in terms of steps that are followed.
Security and health screening
Protecting the safety, security and health of Canadians and refugees is a key factor in guiding the Government of Canada’s actions throughout this initiative.
Each individual Syrian refugee that Canada welcomes will undergo a robust, multi-layered screening:
1. Refugee identification before referral to IRCC
2. Immigration and security interview by experienced visa officers
3. Identity and document verification; biometric and biographic collection
4. Health screening
5. Identity confirmation prior to departure
6. Identity verification upon arrival

A Zillion thanks for this post, Chips.
So beautiful and heartwarming and I read thru the hashtag entries. Wow—so much generous and open heated welcome
The Guardian has a very moving video which shows PM Trudeau welcoming his new citizens–he mentions that they all have health care and other ID and you see him helping with the warm down coats distribution that is going on.
I’d bet you do, Maryl, but the wingnuts get the airtime every time – in conjunction with the MSM they have the squeaky wheel thingie completely mastered. Sadly.
The BBC website has a similar video of PM Trudeau. If you enjoyed the first one, you will also like the BBC version.
It shows the neatly labeled shelves of Canadian weather ready clothing and a rack of kids size down coats. And many boxes of teddy bears.
This is what a country that understands what “values” means acts on those values.
Refugees walking thru the terminal exit with what they will need to start a new life.
Meanwhile, in NYC, the second man who was part of the “3 men in a room” who run New York State
Has been convicted on all counts.
Dean Skelos, head of the State Senate joins Sheldon Silver head of the State Assembly now on the unemployment line. if you are convicted of a felony in NY you lose your seat immediately.
If you are wondering who the third man in the room is—-Governor Andrew Cuomo. I’d bet the Gov isn’t going anyplace that doesn’t have a mens room close by.
the vote that some Dems took against refugees is something I think most will regret – political expediency ;
that vote solidified my belief that if ordinary people must go to the frontlines in these fights for equality and against all kinds of discrimination and hate-mongering;
like PBO told us during the campaigns (and reminds us to this day); change can only come from the bottom to up and ….. we have to be the change we seek;
I was glad to see the religious leaders in my town come together and very strongly support our Muslim brothers and sisters;
in some places, the mosques are having open houses this weekend and are welcoming non-Muslims to come and share our common humanity;
I will soon be checking with the mosque near me to see if they are holding such an event
“One day, a Christian of America made up in his mind to test Jesus, saying, “Teacher, remind me on how I am to inherit eternal life.” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the New Testament? How do you read it?” And he answered, “I must have faith in him whom God has risen from the dead. It is a living faith which leads me to love God and my neighbor.” And Jesus said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”
But the Christian of America, didn’t fully appreciate the answer. He straightened his back. Cast a smirk of a smile and said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” …
That’s true, yardarm. I don’t even recognize their version of Christianity anymore. A few people who were my best friends went way over the edge and now support all the horrible people who spread fear, denigrate the poor, and are completely focused on who DOESN’T belong in their club; all the while they are trying to evangelize and ‘win souls’. I want to say, “you should try finding your own, first.”
Whatever the outcome of these final negotiations, it seems clear that we are on the cusp of an historic moment for the planet that will arrive sometime this weekend.
Not a fan of Harper after all the damage. But pretty sure he would have done the same thing.
Canada has always been welcoming to refugees.
The way it should be. Bravo Trudeau!
Remember the Jade Helm fuss? Have you heard about the B-52 training? Probably not unless you live in the area and read the local papers. We hear the B-52s, etc. only if we are outside. We often heard them when we moved here in 1977, but not anymore.

Air Force wants to fly bomber runs over Campbell County http://www.gillettenewsrecord.com/news/article_46ac4e8e-889f-58b7-adf6-3198e3706a7c.html#.VmtnBWGpCGg.twitter
From staff and wire reports
Low flying B-1 and B-52 bombers could soon be a common sight in northern Campbell County.
The U.S. Air Force wants to quadruple the airspace to conduct training exercises with its B-1 and B-52 bombers stationed in North and South Dakota. The expanded airspace would include much of northern Campbell County.
Known as the Powder River Training Complex, the flight area now spans about 6,000 square miles and is centered just northwest of where South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana meet. The current airspace includes almost all of Crook County but ends at the Campbell County border.
THE CANADIAN WELCOMING TO REFUGEES IS EXACTLY THE WAY GOD INTENDED US TO BE…ANYTHING LESS IS A FAILURE AND WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO FAIL THE CREATOR OF OUR UNIVERSE? HOW CAN ANYONE WHO MISTREATS OTHERS LIVE WITH THEMSELVES?

Hi VC! looking at the pictures of the airport made me wistful ๐
Come on up – today you don’t really need a coat as warm as some of the new immigrants are wearing. ๐ ๐
I am sooooooo tempted vc! I have plenty of time-off, but no winter booths or heavy coat ๐ฏ
๐ฏ The boss has given you plenty of time off in *winter*!!!
Yup! ๐ ๐ ๐
The man has got his head all twisted around. ๐
Not one gun in sight!
In truth I have never seen a gun in public except in the holster of a police officer and then only the butt.
I know. No manhood issues up there.
I don’t know about that! *chuckle-chuckle*
X2 – and I never saw that until 1980s – first time I saw a policeman carrying a gun was at Dulles airport 1978
PRICELESS…SENT THIS TO MY FB…………………….:)
I remember the Airport in Toronto very well. It is Huuuuuuuge and well maintained.
I get to head out there Tuesday to pick up Offspring for the Xmas break. Sure hoping the weather stays as it has been this past week.
Me too. Give him a hug from me please. ๐
Will do.
You gotta see this video!
Fabulous! The exact way it SHOULD BE! Thank you so much for posting this:)
Yes, Bill, that is so touching. I think PM Trudeau has been watching video & film our our wonderful & compassionate POTUS
Well done, Canada and PM Trudeau! I guess their screening process isn’t 18 months like ours.

Yes!!! Bill posted the video I meant as I was typing that TOD needs to see it. . Thank you to Bill!
The WORLD needs to see this video. ..this is how you treat refugees escaping from their dysfunctional country thats at war.
“No wars, and we can go to school safely.”
I wish we had open hearts like that.

Thanks Chips, for this uplifting thread, so many wonderful tweets yesterday and today about Canada’s warm welcome.

Here’s my response — really feel it deserves a place when MSM roundup “decade in review” photos in 2019:
Whatever the outcome of these final negotiations, it seems clear that we are on the cusp of an historic moment for the planet that will arrive sometime this weekend.
