The First Time as Tragedy, the Second Time as Farce

Well, Il Douche went full Nazi yesterday. At a rally, he proposed banning all Muslims from entering the US. The crowd, of course, went wild.

Various GOP grandees clutched their pearls and averred that this was unconstitutional, un-American, and bad politics. Even Dick “Darth Vader” Cheney snapped back at Il Douche. (Of course, he was probably mostly concerned with his rich Saudi friends not being able to visit him at his secure, undisclosed location.)

Forgive me if I take their protestations with an ounce of salt.

The GOP, for 50 years, has covertly stoked racism among the white working class, the people who feel disenfranchised since the social justice movements of the 1960s and who form the bedrock of the Republican voting base. As a wise Republican once said, you can no longer say “nigger”, but you can say “welfare queen”, or “forced busing”. The code is understood.

What Il Douche has done is say “Screw the code words” and come out full bore on the racist angle. If you thought it would stop with his anti-Latino diatribes, you were sorely mistaken. (They came for the Latinos, and I did nothing, for I was not from Mexico.)

No, he doesn’t say “nigger” or “wetback” or “raghead”. He doesn’t have to. His rhetoric is suffused with the meaning those epithets convey. One doesn’t have to say the offending word when one’s speech is an avalanche of racist tropes. He even got digs in at Jews in his speech at the Republican Jewish conference, and they gave him a standing ovation.

Sure, Il Douche is pulling 30% of 30% of the population. But you don’t have to start out with a majority to steamroll your way to success in politics. And what he has done is give the base what it’s craved: Someone who will “tell it like it is”. Forget that this (hopefully) makes him toxic in a general election, where many of “those” people will turn out to vote as if their lives depend on it. Il Douche is performance art for the disaffected, for white people who were promised eternal dominance and now see that blowing away like a tattered Confederate battle flag.

And Il Douche is the direct birth of a long gestation of the politics of white racial resentment which the GOP has gloried in and used to achieve political dominance since the 1980s. The party of Willie Horton can’t honestly say it’s shocked at this dark turn of events. (Of course, honesty went out of the GOP with Honest Abe’s martyrdom.)

Of course, there is a weapon to combat Il Douche and his ilk. That is to vote. To vote in such massive numbers that the rebuke of this kind of politics will last a generation or more. It is the greatest power a citizen has in a democracy, more than protest, certainly more than amassing an arsenal of military grade weapons. It is the power which we’ve exercised at several crisis points in our history, when it seemed as if the darkness would wash over us. It is the only power which saves us from chaos.

I don’t want to hear the excuses that “she’s not perfect” or “he can’t win”. And I’m not even speaking solely of presidential politics. I’m speaking of state elections, of local elections. I’m speaking of a wave of voting to cleanse away the barnacles which have accumulated on our body politic. You’re aghast at Il Douche? Great. Then vote. And not just for Hillary or Bernie, but for Senate, for the House, for every local office. Realize that you have the power, not the Kochs. A million man march on the Mall won’t stop Il Douche from becoming President. Millions of small marches to your polling station will.

Despite this piece’s title, this really isn’t a farce. It’s deadly serious. The unresolved issues of the Civil War are finally ripening. We’re again facing a crisis to preserve the values of our nation. If one can’t be bothered to perform her civic duty, the fault will be on her head.

I still want to believe that Il Douche’s universe is not the majority of the GOP. On that premise, should 68% decide to follow him to the Hades comes election time, the better for all insane people.

You are absolutely telling the truth.

I was there when he called Mexicans rapists.

Then again, I was here when he was the BIRTHER-IN-CHIEF.

And, the MSMS poo-pooed and kee-keed along with him, covering for him.

But, this is who he is.

And, I will say it again..

He IS NOT speaking for a SLIVER of the Republican Party.

He is speaking to BEDROCK, AND MAINSTREAM OF THE GOP.

    THIS is who they are.

He is running a full on Southern Strategy campaign without the codewords/dogwhistles.

He does it in non-Frank Luntz-approved language.

And, it’s been very interesting to watch the MSM twist themselves into knots in order to not point out the obvious – THE RACISM/BIGOTRY – that is at the core of his support.

They also know that he’s not talking to the FRINGE of the party. That he’s speaking to the Mainstream.

    HOW do I know this?

Because NONE OF THEM WILL CONDEMN HIM….cause they want his votes.

    excellent piece, LL.

    Great piece, LL!

A few of my fave quotes:

“Of course, he [Dick Cheney] was probably mostly concerned with his rich Saudi friends not being able to visit him at his secure, undisclosed location.”

“Il Douche is performance art for the disaffected, for white people who were promised eternal dominance and now see that blowing away like a tattered Confederate battle flag.” [wonderful use of imagery here, LL]

“A million man march on the Mall won’t stop Il Douche from becoming President. Millions of small marches to your polling station will.”

When Trump first started, I compared him to Berlusconi – an over-the-top right-wing media mogul turned politician, a buffoon, albeit a dangerous one. Now I do believe comparisons to Mussolini are more accurate. Can’t wait to tell my guy in Italy about your nickname for Trump, “Il Douche” 🙂 He will appreciate that one. I love him dearly, but he is one of those on the left who has convinced himself that voting doesn’t matter. You can best believe, if Trump were to get the nomination, he would be frantically emailing me about how Americans better show up to vote against him 🙂

  19. December 8, 2015 at 3:16 pm

    Well done, LL, as always.

This is my simple summary of where we are as a Nation, 8 Dec 2015 ….

We either stop it, or we will be witness to it because Trump is inciting a non-trivial fraction of current US Citizenry, most of whom are already heavily armed and just as evil as he is. Period.

NCLB, you inspired me to go back a thread and listen. Wow! Josh Earnest is a badass! Could he please run for President in 2016? 🙂

In direct contrast to Josh’s sharp and spot-on, tell it like it is, NFTG responses was the level of stupid the WHPC has reached. What happened to journalism? There were always good and bad, establishment supporting and liberal leaning reporters, but at least most of them asked intelligent questions, right? I mean, am I remembering a time that never existed or have today’s reporters truly de-evolved?

The most infuriating to me was the blond in the front row with the grey jacket who asked the same ridiculous question an insane number of times; I wanted to reach through the screen and slap her (and I’m not a violent person 🙂 )

The other doofus was the man with the navy jacket and yellow tie toward the end of the presser who insinuated that it was PBO’s fault that no gun legislation has been passed. This idiot actually said that PBO had been able to pass healthcare, so why not gun legislation? Of course, a WHPC reporter should know and understand that the Congress was majority DEM when the ACA was passed, that it was a herculean and uncertain effort down to the last vote (election of Scott Brown, anyone? Dennis Kucinich threatening to vote no, anyone?). How do these idiots get hired for these jobs?

        From yesterday:

I think the fellow with the yellow tie was @KevinCorke with Fox News (don’t remember what he was wearing today, but he’s the sharpest dresser in the WHPC, hands down). He’s actually the least offensive person who sits in the WHPB chair reserved for FNC.

Let’s search America’s history and it will show you about the hanging of blacks, the bombing, the beatings and toss in the rivers, the fear blacks dealt with right here in America. Blacks know why fear is all about, since that is what they have dealt with for hundreds of years. Our ISIS have been the KKK.

    Afternoon greetings!

Well, after reading all this hullabaloo about Trump, I will admit that I’m not exactly feeling at ease when some say he won’t/can’t win. Yes it’s way too early to say, and yes he’s stirring up quite a bit of hate, but from the outside looking in I’m not convinced he’s unlikely to be chosen. I remember thinking there was no way Georgie B would win a second term because he clearly didn’t know what he was doing and couldn’t even express himself well. We all know how that ended! The same thing happened with Walker in Wisconsin, etc. etc. In the past decade or so and at different levels of government I’ve been sure in my own mind that there was no way clearly obvious idiots could win and yet there’s a long list of idiots who *have* won. In short, my confidence level has been shattered over and over re US electorate, so now I mostly watch, listen, and wait.

I went to bed on Saturday night and it was still downloading from 10am that morning, but when I awoke on Sunday @6am, that part of the download was complete. Just a few more tweaks and it’s all loaded. It’s not complicated for me because I’ve used PC’s most of my career. So now I have a working PC and a working Macbook to play with 🙂

So choose a time when you will NOT want to use your computer. Thank goodness I had the macbook and my iphone, otherwise, I would have lost my mind and destroyed my computer. 😀

      True.

There’s reach of the GOP is long.

People need to realize there is no shame in the GOP or the MSM. “Shame on you” is a useless admonishment. They just don’t CARE.

That is why Trump made his “no Muslims” proclamation and immediately had call-in spots on 4 news outlets AFTERWARD.

So now comes the fallout. Gee, Jake Tapper – in all this anti-Muslim sentiment, we’re reminded that white supremacists hate other people too!

Muslims are now getting death threats.

The Trump brownshirts are amped up, locked and loaded. We saw what happened when one of their RWNJ bots got an earful of Planned Parenthood lies.

Great job, LL. It actually shames me to know that there are Americans who think blatant bigotry and hatred toward others are acceptable qualities in a presidential candidate. I’m embarrassed by the cowardice of Americans who are so frightened of “a terrorist” attack they want a big, bad, loudmouthed daddy to protect them. All the dark forces of hatred, violence and inchoate rage have been unleashed in this ‘presidential season’ and the ugliest, seamiest, most repellent side of the American psyche has been exposed. What happened to the millions of good, decent people who worked night and day to twice elect Barack Obama to the presidency? Why aren’t there a lot of voices being raised in outrage right now?

Jackie, my guess is, just as we are doing here, that there are a lot of voices being raised, but they don’t get hour-long coverage of their speeches on MSNBC or call in spots on the networks and Sunday shows. The MSM has turned into nothing but “click bait” whether it is internet driven or by clicking on the channel. Until the masses stop clicking on Trump outrage, even if it is just to gaze at the train wreck, the MSM will shamefully keep giving him a platform.

The National Black Church Initiative (NBCI) is a coalition of 34,000 African American and Latino churches working to eradicate racial disparities in healthcare, technology, education, housing, and the environment. NBCI’s mission is to provide critical wellness information to all of its members, congregants, churches and the public. Our methodology is utilizing faith and sound health science.

Donald Trump is a cancer on our democracy and the pervasiveness of this cancer must be cut out using the fervent tools of prayer, votes, and moral authority. The Black Church has to exercise its moral authority by speaking against this ugliness of the rhetoric expressed by Trump. We must be to not let him destroy this great America experiment for humanity. The Black Church prays for the responsiveness and attentiveness of congregants and to utilize the power of the vote to remove Donald Trump from those contenders vying for highest office in our great land. We can all disagree with everyone without undermining the humanity of anyone. Donald Trump does not meet the basic litmus test.

      • December 8, 2015 at 6:13 pm

There is a point of view being floated around that Trump really doesn’t want to be President and he is doing this in order to get ousted from the race so that he doesn’t have to quit. I actually like the idea that he is trolling the GOP, but he is on dangerous ground inciting fear and violence, so if he is, he needs to tone it down.

If he’s doing this all so he doesn’t have be called a quitter, it’s disturbing how much he’d rather be known as a racist, fascist, xenophobe. I guess with so many people supporting him, he’s not worried about hurting his brand.

He and the GOP may have badly underestimated how horrid their base really is. He may not be able to LOSE his support.

      Hi Tally,

For awhile I thought Trump might be producing/directing/staring in the ‘reality TV’ show of the millennium and, for the final episode in the series, he’d ‘fire’ the entire US corporate media, the GOP, and more than a few of the anti-democracy kleptocrats who fund America’s decline toward something far, far worse than USA circa 1850.

Of course, I could be completely surprised, but I think the inner, evil self of Trump has manifested and it’s going to take a massive electoral crushing to put the dude where he, and all those who support him, belong – rebuked and rejected, forever. And, thereafter even mentioning Trump & Co. in the USA should be met with the same revulsion most Germans express for Hitler and his fellow criminals, to this day.

Thanks – amazing what can be found. I was thinking after your last post and after reading this, tracing slave heritage probably has some equivalence with trying to trace the poorest of the poor in England. So many burial records state

“Buried – the servant of Mr J Smith” – so the name of the servant is non existant, his life (and death) belonged to the employer.

Exactly. The other difficulty is the freed sometimes adopted new names, or changed the spelling. Funny story, when I first entered the USMC, I met a senior officer who’s last name was the same as my paternal family, just a slightly different spelling; I thought to myself it would be funny if we were related. He died a few months ago, my Aunt (father’s sister) ever knew General so&so. Turns out his father and my grandfather were first cousins…

The world is often very small when it comes to family. One of the first relatives I found when researching was a 5th cousin – he lived 15 minutes from us. 🙂

The prime minister has joined the mayor of London in rejecting comments by US presidential hopeful Donald Trump that parts of London are “so radicalised the police are afraid for their lives”.

The Republican nomination contender made the remarks in a TV interview.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said David Cameron “completely disagrees” with Mr Trump and thinks “his views are wrong”.

The mayor of London Boris Johnson said Mr Trump’s comments were “complete and utter nonsense”.

“The Prime Minister completely disagrees with the comments made by Donald Trump, which are divisive, unhelpful and quite simply wrong,” his official spokeswoman said.

The comments represent a departure from the practice usually followed by British prime ministers of avoiding commentary on the merits of contenders in the US presidential race.

Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn said the presidential hopeful’s remarks were an “affront to common humanity” and called for people to “unite against racism”, coming in the wake of Mr Trump’s call to ban Muslims from entering the US.

The Metropolitan Police said: “We would not normally dignify such comments with a response, however on this occasion we think it’s important to state to Londoners that Mr Trump could not be more wrong.

“Any candidate for the presidential election in the United States of America is welcome to receive a briefing from the Met Police on the reality of policing London.”

A million man march on the Mall won’t stop Il Douche from becoming President.

Millions of small marches to your polling station will.

    ftw.
