      DesertFlower,

Thank you for posting. I worked with refugees for many years, those admitted under Section 207 of the INA. I had a call with a very good friend of mine yesterday saying that she was in agreement with none other than The Donald. I almost blew it. It was hard to explain to her, an immigrant like me, that refugees, Syrian refugees could not be used as scapegoat for all sorts of phobias.

Yes, we do need to redouble efforts to screen who is here, who is coming, but in no shape that rescinding admission of refugees will we be safer. There are many wackos, and God help us, dormant cells in our midst that are constantly looking for an opportunity to commit mass murder.

Newton, Aurora, Oklahoma, Arizona come to mind.

I hope you were able to talk some sense into your friend. If you hear anyone say, “I agree with the Donald,” it is a sure sign they’ve have lost touch with reality.

My pleasure, No Child…this entire made up hysteria makes me cringe and enrages me…I think that this should be shared widely…actually, I think the better word for what I feel about this is revulsion. Truly, I think more about these “Christians with guns” walking around here mowing down people because they fear xyz…they walk among us freely. I say bring all the refugees here and ship those guys over to Syria. I’d feel much better!

Excellent article, Df. What is so absolutely galling is that all this hysteria is nothing but a political ploy to stir up the bigotry and ignorance of the Republican base. The R candidates and their media enablers are joyous at this gift. They can use it to undermine the President and stoke deep racist fears that will lead gullible people to embrace those who they idiotically think will ‘protect’ them from the bogeyman. At times like these, I’m deeply ashamed of my fellow Americans.

None of the terrorists found, captured or killed through intel from this so-called “Anonymous” group. They have not provided any genuine leads in ANY investigation of interest, whether it’s police officers, domestic criminals, fugitives or terrorists.

The R’s will do everything they can to try to tie PBO’s hands in the next few weeks and, and once again, we will have Christmas holiday drama about the budget that will keep the President in town. Americans who think these tactics are acceptable have sold their souls to hatred and bigotry. I’ve lost all patience with them.

    http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/11/the-self-fulfilling-prophecy-of-government-doesnt-work-213375

The more Americans tell themselves the problem lies with the politicians in office, and the less they admit it’s the responsibility of the voters who elect people unwilling to govern, the worse things will become. Blaming elected officials just deepens the degree of public unhappiness with the political system; this misplaced anger then depresses voter turnout and distorts voters’ choices when they get to the booth.

The biggest problem democrats have is the fact that nobody will defend the president. Nobody defends his policies. When his policies is under scrutiny from all republicans, nobody gets in RB and defends him.
If they do defend his policies, they make it seem like it’s the policy they put forward .
Democrats on the hill are deeply divided including DWS who is more concerned with how Hillary is doing than defending Obama.

Pf, the thing is, we can’t and shouldn’t depend on an entity called, “the Democratic Party.” It’s really up to us, every day to defend the President and present what it means to be a Democrat. If there is no coordinated and official effort to support good candidates, we have to create it. I figured this out in 2004 when Mr. G and I found a sleepy, inactive local party and created a Kerry for President campaign on our own. PBO has always known this and so created his own parallel organization in 2008 and 2012. There are a lot of good people out there who are eager to counteract the rancid poison of Republicanism. We can tap into that energy, starting with small groups of like-minded people at coffees and house parties and building from there. PBO never once said that the future depended on the party structure. He said that the future was in our hands. I believe him.

Cruz to Obama: ‘Insult me to my face’
    11/19/15 08:00 AM
facebook twitter 1 save share group 13
    By Steve Benen
President Obama has heard some of the Republican hysteria about Syrian refugees, and he’s clearly unimpressed. “These are the same folks oftentimes who suggest that they’re so tough that just talking to Putin or staring down ISIL, or using some additional rhetoric somehow is going to solve the problems out there,” the president yesterday. “But apparently, they’re scared of widows and orphans coming into the United States of America as part of our tradition of compassion.

“First, they were worried about the press being too tough on them during debates,” Obama added. “Now they’re worried about three-year-old orphans. That doesn’t sound very tough to me.”

Evidently, this has hurt Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-Texas) feelings.
“Let me suggest something Mr. President: If you want to insult me, you can do it overseas, you can do it in Turkey, you can do it in foreign countries. But I would encourage you, Mr. President, come back and insult me to my face,” Cruz said. “Let’s have a debate on Syrian refugees right now. We can do it anywhere you want. I’d prefer it in the United States and not overseas where you’re making the insults.”
In context, Cruz’s school-yard taunts concluded with the senator calling for some kind of one-on-one debate with the president. “We’ll do it on any station,” the Texan added. “I’m sure any one of the TV stations would be glad to host it.”

Email from Georgia Democrats dated yesterday:

Today, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that two Georgia voters have filed a class action lawsuit alleging “a massive data breach by Secretary of State Brian Kemp involving the Social Security numbers and other private information of more than six million voters statewide.”

Equally as bad—the Republicans in charge of this state haven’t done a damn thing to reach out to consumers, admit their mistakes and help Georgians protect themselves.

Well if the Secretary of State Brian Kemp won’t do it, and Governor Nathan Deal won’t do it, we will.

      Here’s what you should know:

This wasn’t hacking. No one broke into the system and stole your identifying information. Brian Kemp simply gave it away—more than 30 days ago.

A lawsuit was filed and in it there are screenshots (redacted) of the plaintiffs’ information that was distributed. We know that the information contained on the disc that never should have been distributed include:

      Your name
      Your address
      Your date of birth
      Your social security number
      Your drivers’ license
      Your gender
      Your race/ethnicity
      Your phone number

Here’s how you can protect yourself:

If you believe that this breach of security may cause you to become a victim of identity theft, visit the website of or call one of the three main credit bureaus:

      Equifax: 800-525-6285 or http://www.equifax.com
      Experian: 888-397-3742 or http://www.experian.com
      TransUnion: 800-680-7289 or http://www.transunion.com

Request that an “Initial Alert” be placed on your account. This service is free and it places an alert on your account for 90 days that prevents from a new card being opened up in your name. Check out THIS website to get more information.

If you believe you are already a victim of identity theft, please follow the steps outlined HERE.

You can download an entire booklet on identity theft at the Federal Trade Commission’s website HERE.

How do we protect ourselves in the future:

Vote these fools out of office. Seriously. We need someone who can use, update and protect databases in this state. And then, we need a group of statewide elected officials who actually believe in protecting us, Georgians and consumers.

Trump won’t rule out database, special ID for Muslims in US
    November 19, 2015, 09:25 am

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump believes that the war on terror will require unprecedented surveillance of America’s Muslims.

“We’re going to have to do thing that we never did before,” he said during a Yahoo interview.

“Some people are going to be upset about it, but I think that now everybody is feeling that security is going to rule,” Trump said.

“Certain things will be done that we never thought would happen in this country in terms of information and learning about the enemy,” he added. “We’re going to have to do things that were frankly unthinkable a year ago.”

Trump would not rule out warrantless searches in his plans for increased surveillance of the nation’s Muslims, Yahoo reported Thursday.

He also remained open toward registering U.S. Muslims in a database or giving them special identification identifying their faith, the news outlet added.

Las Vegas man indicted on charges of threatening Obama, others
    Posted November 18, 2015 – 4:09pm

A Las Vegas man was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday on charges of threatening President Barack Obama and other government officials.

Tyrone Paul Ponthieux, 55, who is in federal custody, faces one felony count of threatening the life of the president in November 2014 and one count of threatening to assault, kidnap and murder other unnamed federal officials, including an FBI agent, in September.

The last threats allegedly were made after Ponthieux’s June arrest. He is to be arraigned on the charges in federal court on Nov 25.

Agents with the Las Vegas FBI’s domestic terrorism squad questioned Ponthieux at his home May 21 about whether he inquired about obtaining ammonium nitrate, a chemical used in fertilizer and making bombs, according to a complaint unsealed in June.

Independently, agents learned that Ponthieux had made a death threat on his Facebook page in November 2014 against Obama and members of Congress, the complaint alleged. The Facebook page contains a photo of Ponthieux sitting on a black Hummer holding an AR-15 rifle.

water is wet news, but still always good to see the analysis in black and white.

Black borrowers in Richmond are less likely to be approved for home loans and refinancing than white applicants regardless of their income levels, according to a study by fair-housing advocates.

The effect is a continuation of the “redlining” that explicitly denied loans to minorities in the 20th century, according to Housing Opportunities Made Equal of Virginia.

“Certainly lenders and banks tell you money is all the same color and they’re an equal opportunity lender, but when you get down to it, you have individuals who are underwriting loans who have biases,” said Brian Koziol, the nonprofit organization’s director of research and the report’s author.

The group’s study found that between 2010 and 2013, the most recent year for which mortgage data is available, 13.7 percent of white borrowers had loan applications denied while black applicants experienced a 34.6 percent denial rate.

The report found that Hispanic residents also faced higher denial rates than white residents, but overall were granted loans more frequently than black borrowers.

Koziol said that a lenders’ willingness to finance home purchases directly corresponded to a neighborhood’s racial makeup.

The study found that for each percentage point increase in the minority population of a census tract, 12.5 fewer mortgages would be made.

The neighborhoods impacted are the same ones historically excluded for lending through redlining, and more recently, targeted for subprime loans, Koziol said.

While those neighborhoods have disproportionately high poverty rates, a borrower’s income doesn’t account for the difference: The report found a 9.9 point disparity in loan approval rates among black and white low-income applicants and a 27.5 point disparity among black and white upper-income borrowers.

Virginia Mosque Meeting Gets Ugly: ‘Every One of You Are Terrorists!’
    11:24 am, November 19th, 2015

A presentation on plans for a new mosque near Fredericksburg, Va. ended with a volley of racist rants made by members of the public.

According to WUSA 9, speaker Samer Shalaby was presenting plans for a new mosque the local Muslim community intended to build on property it already owned. The current Islamic Center is too small, as the community has grown steadily in recent years.

That’s when two men in attendance at the public meeting shouted down Shalaby with claims that all Muslims were “evil” and “terrorists.” The speaker said he didn’t expect such hostility.

“It just kept getting worse and worse,” Shalaby said. “People were pointing fingers and waiving arms.”

The first man to make a scene called what Shalaby and local Muslims were doing “evil,” which attracted some positive attention from the crowd. That’s when the second man came forward.

“I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that does not happen. We don’t want it because you are terrorists. Every one of you are terrorists. I don’t care what you say,” he said. “You can smile at me. You can say whatever you want, but every Muslim is a terrorist.”
